How Does Change In Land Use Impact The Water Chemistry Parameters In The Streams Of Oswego County, Ny?, Madison Steates, Thomas Back, Suann Yang

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Land use within a watershed is closely tied to stream water chemistry. Anthropogenic chemical inputs eventually make their way into streams, affecting fluvial ecosystems. Sources of these anthropogenic inputs change over time, especially when rural landscapes become increasingly urbanized. We studied the relationship between land use and stream water chemistry for Oswego County, New York, because riparian zones in this county have shifted to residential from agricultural and forested land uses. We extracted data from the New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) Department of Water (DOW) Monitoring Portal. Results show that residential land use contributes higher carbon, nitrogen, and …

Hpv Vaccine Hesitancy In The United States Among Black Americans And Christian Nationalists, Bridget Moyer Apr 2024

Hpv Vaccine Hesitancy In The United States Among Black Americans And Christian Nationalists, Bridget Moyer

Proceedings of GREAT Day

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection among sexually active individuals. Those infected are at risk for developing cancer of the genitals, cervix, anus, or throat. While the vaccine is safe and effective, as of 2020 only 58.6% of adolescents in the United States were up to date on HPV vaccinations. Endorsing Christian nationalist values is one of the top predictors of vaccine hesitancy in the U.S. The HPV vaccine is especially contentious among Christian nationalists due to its relation to sexual health. The influence of purity culture has created a culture of fear regarding sex and …

Creating A Podcast: Research About Reproductive Justice Accessible To The Public, Taylor Hansen

Proceedings of GREAT Day

In this paper, I will explain how I created a podcast about the findings from my research about reproductive justice. In this study, reproductive justice was understood as the right to have children, the right to not have children, and the right to have children in a safe and dignified environment. Starting from recommendations about what efforts should be made to promote reproductive justice, this project sought to find out what grassroots organizations are currently doing. In order to understand how grassroots organizers are addressing reproductive issues today, I interviewed eight leaders who are conducting this work in Western New …

The Silent, Spoken Stress: How A Lack Of Dialogue Perpetuates Vocal Issues And Lowered Quality Of Life In Educators, Peighton Cervoni

Proceedings of GREAT Day

This presentation examines the heavy burden of vocal issues and stress amongst educators in the Southern Tier of New York. Teachers are deemed one of the most at-risk groups of people for contracting vocal disorders according to the International Labor Organization (Araújo et al. 2008). Female teachers are disproportionately affected by vocal issues as caused by both biological and sociocultural factors. This disproportion then translates into their teaching, which then in turn affects their students’ learning and their job satisfaction. By incorporating evidence from articles, personal correspondence, and formal interviews with educators of various concentrations, this study demonstrates that teachers …

Unequal Contributions To Co2 Emissions Along The Income Distribution Within And Between Countries, Federica Cappelli Apr 2024

Unequal Contributions To Co2 Emissions Along The Income Distribution Within And Between Countries, Federica Cappelli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The question of whether changes in income inequality affect CO2 emissions remains a topic of debate at both theoretical and empirical levels. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of changes in the full spectre of income distribution on consumption based CO2 emissions per capita. To do so, we estimate a dynamic difference-GMM model and a dynamic threshold regression model allowing for endogeneity on a panel database covering 107 countries between 1990 and 2019. Our analysis highlights how different income classes contribute very differently to consumption-based CO2 emissions. In addition, by accounting for between-country inequalities in the …

Protecting The Blind Side Of Title Vii From The Blitz Of Textualism, Sean Harrison Apr 2024

Protecting The Blind Side Of Title Vii From The Blitz Of Textualism, Sean Harrison

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

Just like the outcome of Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the National Football League, the existence of private affirmative action is uncertain. A case could be brought, or it might not. Even if a case is brought, the Supreme Court may not even take it up. But that does not mean we should stand idly by. By analyzing the past and by tracing judicial trends in statutory interpretation, we can see a potential blitz coming. Instead of hoping the blitz never comes, we need to proactively adjust the protection in order to not be blindsided by a potential challenge to Weber …

Evaluating Bone Fracture Healing Utilizing Novel Ultrasound Modes, X-Ray And Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry In A Rabbit Model, Priscilla Machado, Rachel Blackman, Ji-Bin Liu, Flemming Forsberg, Traci Fox

Department of Radiology Posters

Background and Purpose

Healing in bone fractures is a complex process involving local inflammation, angiogenesis (i.e., the creation of new blood vessels), and formation of a bone-building callus, all of which leads to returning the bone nearly to its pre-fracture state. This is the process in a bone where the fracture is clean and the fractured ends oppose each other. Five to 10 percent of fractures are described as non-union, which can lead to poor healing and long-term complications. The purpose of this study was to compare fracture healing in a rabbit model using x-ray, the traditional method for evaluating …

Predictive Performance Of The Hester Davis Scale For Fall Risk (Hds) At Henry Ford Jackson Hospital (Hfjh), Kathleen Walsh, Danielle Elswick, David Metcalf, Karen Gossman, Jennifer Rice, Jessica Schmidt, Emilee Losey, Vanessa Walker, Gregory D. Jordon

2024 Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Research Symposium

Henry Ford Health’s strategic plan includes the goal: “Zero Harm and 100 Reliability” using the Highly Reliable Organization (HRO) framework. Patient falls are a nurse sensitive indicator, and the most common adverse event in hospitals. One fall in three causes harm; from minor to severe. Most falls are anticipated physiological falls, which are preventable. Henry Ford Health, including HFJH, adopted the HDS Fall Risk Tool in August of 2018. Variable fall rates and challenges with HDS implementation sparked our team to replicate and expand upon the Kaiser (2020) study.

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Interferon-induced Transmembrane Protein 3 (IFITM3) plays a substantial role in the immune system by repressing viral entry into host cells and restricting virus replication. Recent research suggests that IFITM3/rs34481144 and IFITM3/rs12252 contribute to susceptibility to viral infections across populations dependent on their population frequencies, which needs further clarification. Here, we conducted a population-based study to determine the prevalence of two regulator SNPs in the Turkish population and evaluated genotype and allele frequencies in individuals stratified into groups based on a pilot survey conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tetra-Primer Arms PCR (TPA-PCR) assays and Sanger sequencing methods were used for …
