Exploring The Role Of Intrinsic Motivation In Elementary Public-School Educators’ Willingness To Remain In Teaching, Lynnette K. Steinhoff Apr 2024

Exploring The Role Of Intrinsic Motivation In Elementary Public-School Educators’ Willingness To Remain In Teaching, Lynnette K. Steinhoff

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The experiences and perceptions of novice educators’ willingness to remain in teaching have been without clear research. The problem addressed by this study was the need to understand why novice educators remain in the field in order to support districts and legislators in updating policies and funding measures. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how the intrinsic motivation of novice elementary educators within a K–12 public school influences their willingness to remain in teaching. Self-determination theory (SDT), with its psychological principles of autonomy, competency, and relatedness, was selected as the conceptual framework. Two research questions addressed intrinsic …

Healthcare Experiences Of Transgender Adults Who Are African American, Lacole Cole Apr 2024

Healthcare Experiences Of Transgender Adults Who Are African American, Lacole Cole

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

African Americans struggle to access healthcare because of a combination of overt racism, implicit bias from providers, and the effects of systemic racism. As a result, researchers have studied the challenges of this specific adult population. Less research has been centered on those individuals who are both African American and transgender. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of this population. Guided by intersectionality theory, the study’s research question asked about the experiences of African American transgender adults and their efforts to obtain necessary healthcare services to manage optimal health. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with …

Family Medicine’S Role In Addressing The Intersections Of Redlining And Climate Change, Daryl O. Traylor, Eboni E. Anderson, Brianna Clark, Alex M. Smith, Cooper K. Allenbrand

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

Redlining, the practice of discriminating against specific neighborhoods based on race and socioeconomic status, leads to persistent environmental hazards and socioeconomic inequalities that have lasting adverse health effects on their populations. Health disparities are further exacerbated through the concentration of environmental hazards, as well as the escalating impact of climate change, which poses an increased risk of respiratory illness, cardiovascular disease, mental health issues, heat-related illness, infectious diseases, food insecurity, and socioeconomic difficulties in redline neighborhoods.

This paper examines the interplay of redlining, climate change, and health disparities, with an emphasis on the enduring consequences for these marginalized communities. Through …

Relations Between Prior Racial Microaggressions, Expat Motivation, And Life Satisfaction Among African American Expat Women In Mexico, Patricia Keller

Dissertations

Microaggressions refer to subtle forms of racism that occur in everyday interactions, often conveying hostile or demeaning messages. These experiences can have a negative impact on the psychological well-being and life satisfaction of African Americans. However, there is a lack of research that explores the relationship between microaggressions and the life satisfaction of African American women who have relocated abroad. Additionally, little is known of the contemporary motivations for expatriation of African American women. A review of African American historical migration, study abroad participation, and tourism lays the framework for examining recent expatriation. The purpose of this study was to …

Chapter 11: Treatment Of Detained Persons

International Law Studies

The Commander’s Handbook on the Law of Naval Operations is used in the United States and throughout the world as a restatement of U.S. doctrinal law positions on matters affecting the operations of the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Judge advocates and legal advisers have occasion to conduct deeper research to identify the context and source of the rules reflected in the Commander’s Handbook. Responding to this need, an Annotated Supplement to The Commander’s Handbook was produced in 1997 and published as volume 73 of International Law Studies. In the intervening decades, …

Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) provide potent acid inhibition, yet studies on P-CAB-based quadruple therapy for H. pylori eradication are limited. We theorized that integrating bismuth subsalicylate into a quadruple therapy regimen could enhance eradication rates. However, data on the efficacy of vonoprazan bismuth quadruple therapy are notably scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of vonoprazan-based bismuth quadruple therapy in areas with high clarithromycin and levofloxacin resistance. This was a prospective, single-center, randomized trial conducted to compare the efficacy of 7-day and 14-day vonoprazan-based bismuth quadruple therapy for H. pylori eradication between June 1, 2021, …

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the most common histological subtype of esophageal cancer in Western countries and shows poor prognosis with rapid growth. EAC is characterized by a strong male predominance and racial disparity. EAC is up to fivefold more common among Whites than Blacks, yet Black patients with EAC have poorer survival rates. The racial disparity remains largely unknown, and there is limited knowledge of mutations in EAC regarding racial disparities. We used whole-exome sequencing to show somatic mutation profiles derived from tumor samples from 18 EAC male patients. We identified three molecular subgroups based on the pre-defined esophageal cancer-specific mutational …

Cdk8 in Drosophila is the orthologue of vertebrate CDK8 and CDK19. These proteins have been shown to modulate transcriptional control by RNA polymerase II. We found that neuronal loss of Cdk8 severely reduces fly lifespan and causes bang sensitivity. Remarkably, these defects can be rescued by expression of human CDK19, found in the cytoplasm of neurons, suggesting a non-nuclear function of CDK19/Cdk8. Here we show that Cdk8 plays a critical role in the cytoplasm, with its loss causing elongated mitochondria in both muscles and neurons. We find that endogenous GFP-tagged Cdk8 can be found in both the cytoplasm and nucleus. …

Germinal Center Persistence Diversifies B Cell Responses To Vaccination, Katherine Marie Mcintire Apr 2024

Germinal Center Persistence Diversifies B Cell Responses To Vaccination, Katherine Marie Mcintire

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Vaccination is the best defense against infection, but highly variable and evolving pathogens like influenza virus pose a significant immunological challenge for vaccine design. An ideal influenza virus vaccine should elicit a durable and broadly cross-reactive antibody response. However, the development of cross-reactive antibodies is hindered by the high degree of antigenic variation among influenza viruses, particularly in the surface glycoprotein hemagglutinin (HA), which is the main target of vaccine-induced responses. Successful vaccination works by driving the differentiation of antigen-specific B cells into short-lived, antibody-secreting plasmablasts (PBs) and long-lived populations of memory B cells (MBCs) and bone marrow plasma cells …
