Utilizing a phenomenological approach, qualitative data was collected through interviews with recent high school graduates to assess the impact of authentic learning on their post-secondary trajectories. …
Occupational Therapy & Dyslexia Curriculum, Tiara Ortiz
Occupational Therapy & Dyslexia Curriculum, Tiara Ortiz
Department of Occupational Therapy Entry-Level Capstone Projects
My capstone project, a truly innovative endeavor, was conducted in a school-based setting for children with dyslexia. I developed educational materials, distinct in their approach, for teachers and occupational therapists to implement individually or in a group setting. These materials comprise a curriculum that explicitly targets executive functioning and visual interventions, a novel and exciting approach to dyslexia treatment. The project was successfully implemented in the Bridge Program at the Christ School in Orlando, Florida, a private school program tailored to children with dyslexia. I was mentored by Dominque Kiefer, OTD, OTR/L, BCP, the Bridge Program's school-based occupational therapist.

Promoting Positive Traffic Safety Culture In Riti Communities Through Active Engagement: Implementation Guide And Outreach Activities, Jacob Pehrson, Logan Prescott, Ahmed Abdel-Rahim
CSET Project Reports
Rural, Indigenous, Tribal, and Isolated (RITI) communities’ crash data analysis clearly highlights three major areas of concern: prevalence of excessive speed, impaired and distracted driving, and underage driving. Safety-focused educational programs and awareness campaigns have all contributed to a reduction in crashes in urban areas. However, in RITI communities, much more work is still needed. It is important that communities are provided with the proper resources and methods to deliver the appropriate training and educational tools that promote and cause a significant positive change in the traffic safety culture. Through reviewed literature and interviews with tribal community stakeholders, this research …

Comprehensive Transportation Equity Analysis For Riti Community: A Data-Driven Approach With Case Study, Yinhai Wang, Wei Sun, Sam Ricord, Cesar Maia De Souza, Yifan Ling, Yan Shi, Bingzhang Wang, Mehrdad Nasri
CSET Project Reports
The report presents a comprehensive analysis addressing safety equity concerns for rural communities and American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) populations, who experience disproportionate rates of serious injuries, fatalities, and general collisions. Despite these disparities, significant gaps exist in understanding the demographics of collisions, particularly within tribal communities where law enforcement jurisdictions are complex, and individuals may misreport their tribal status to gain benefits, leading to biases in collision data. This study aims to fill these gaps by developing a statistical model to predict the true demographics of collisions and enhance safety equity. An ecological regression model, accounting for individual-level …
Evaluation Of Reported Level Of Clinical Confidence In Student Nurses Using Deliberate Practice, Leslie Kirkwood
Evaluation Of Reported Level Of Clinical Confidence In Student Nurses Using Deliberate Practice, Leslie Kirkwood
Dissertations
Critical thinking and clinical reasoning, which support confidence in clinical decision-making of nurses, are still being developed during pre-licensure education. Nursing faculty in higher education are tasked with the challenge to increase the level of practice undergraduate nursing students experience during their program. The research question guiding this project was what effect does the use of deliberate practice with medication administration have on medical-surgical nursing II students regarding clinical confidence? The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study was to determine if the use of deliberate practice with nursing students by implementing weekly medication administration simulations would increase the level of …
Synthesis And Computational Studies Of Α- And Δ-Substituted Macrocyclic Europium And Ytterbium Complexes, Delainey Amara Winder
Synthesis And Computational Studies Of Α- And Δ-Substituted Macrocyclic Europium And Ytterbium Complexes, Delainey Amara Winder
Dissertations and Theses
The uses of macrocyclic lanthanide complexes are vast, with many targeted MRI contrast agents at the forefront of the field. Many of these are ParaCEST agents, which require exchangeable protons accessible on the macrocycle and the slow exchange of coordinated water molecules. The substitution at both the α- and δ-carbon on the amide pendant arm of these macrocyclic lanthanide complexes can lock bulky groups on the δ-carbon to a pseudo-axial position. When the α- and δ-carbons have the same chirality, the bulky group will be pseudo-equatorial, and when the chirality is opposed, the bulky group will be pseudo-axial. By performing …

Host-Microbiome Interactions In The Teleost Brain, Amir Mani Varnoosfaderani
Biology ETDs
This dissertation investigates host-microbial interactions within the teleost brain, previously considered sterile. Reviewing current literature highlights significant gaps in understanding teleost brain immunity, despite prevalent neurotropic diseases. We mapped the immune profiles of rainbow trout brains and meninges, revealing the olfactory bulbs as the immune effector part of the brain and the optic tectum as a nod2 expression hub. High il6 and il10 levels were noted in the telencephalon. A persistent bacterial community within healthy salmonid brains shares diversity with gut and blood microbiota. Brain bacterial isolates exhibit genomic signatures for brain colonization and polyamine biosynthesis. The microbiota shifts across …

Commensal relationships between wild plants and their dispersers play a key ecological and evolutionary role in community structure and function. While non-human dispersers are often considered critical to plant recruitment, human dispersers have received much less attention, especially when it comes to non-domesticated plants. Australia, as a continent historically characterized by economies reliant on non-domesticated plants, is thus a key system for exploring the ecological role of people as seed dispersers in the absence of agriculture. Here, we utilize a controlled observation research design, employing ecological surveys and ethnographic observations to examine how seed dispersal and landscape burning by Martu …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become an immense threat to public health leading to an urgent need for development of new technologies to tackle such a challenge. Plant-based drugs, specifically essential oils (EOs) and plant extracts, have shown significant potential as effective green antimicrobial agents. However, they suffer from high volatility and low thermal stability resulting in their inefficient utilization in commercial settings. Among the various nanoencapsulation technologies reported, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been recently investigated as potential nanocarriers of EOs in attempt to enhance their stability. Herein, we report the utilization of Zn-ascorbate MOF for the encapsulation of marjoram essential …

In this study, we focus on pedestrian network construction and pedestrian route choice analysis. We developed a GIS based framework for pedestrian network construction, which takes multiple data sources, such as open source networks, satellite imagery, and pedestrian GPS traces. The pedestrian route choice study examines the impact from tradeoffs between environmental and infrastructure attributes, such as ambient noise, tree canopy shade, and surface characteristics (e.g., sidewalk, grass, etc.). We investigate these in a university campus setting, where walking trips comprise about 25% of all commute trips, with a greater percentage expected for within campus OD trips. We collect and …

Understanding The Roles Of Economy And Society In The Relative Risks Of Zoonosis Emergence From Livestock, Stephen Hinchcliffe, Alex Blanchette, Kin Wang (Ray) Chan, Chris Degeling, Jody Emel, Melissa Leach, Ian Scoones, Michael Winter
Geography
The emergence of zoonotic infections that can develop into pathogens of pandemic potential is a major concern for public health. The risks of emergence and transmission relate to multiple factors that range from land use to human-non-human animal contacts. Livestock agriculture plays a potentially significant role in those risks, shaping landscapes and providing hosts that can act as the source or amplifiers of emergent pathogens. The relative risks will be contingent upon the nature of those systems, with comparisons often made between intensive, indoor, biosecure systems and more extensive, outdoor, insecure systems. Microbiological, ecological and veterinary sciences provide useful entry …
