Statin-Induced Necrotizing Autoimmune Myopathy: A Case Report, Eric M. Teichner, Ms, Arjun B. Ashok, Ms
The Medicine Forum
In the landscape of contemporary medicine, statins stand out as a cornerstone in the prevention and management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. By inhibiting the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase enzyme, statins effectively lower cholesterol levels, thus mitigating the risk of heart attacks and strokes.1 Despite their widespread adoption and generally well-tolerated nature, the clinical panorama of statin therapy is occasionally marred by side effects, including muscle-related adverse events. These range from relatively common and benign myalgias to the rare and severe statin-induced necrotizing autoimmune myopathy (SINAM), a condition marked by muscle weakness and profoundly elevated levels of creatine kinase (CK) …

I’ve spent my life being a deviant. When I say that, I don’t necessarily mean in a delinquent sense (though that has been necessary at times). Rather, I mean I’ve always had to approach things differently. Things about your own life and background can help to shape and widen the ways in which we study, and how we see the world – even if you don’t realize it. For me, it was a combination of breaking my work-a-day upbringing cycle (I came from a working-class family and lived/grew-up in the Petersham suburb, west of downtown Sydney, Australia) and being the …

Viral Worlds: Zika And Matter Of Global Health Futures, Deborah Dixon
The Geographical Bulletin
As a site for ‘cutting edge’ research, virology has a profoundly conservative genealogy, its promulgations on the origins of viral disease intimately wrapped in prognostications on the ending of human life. Since the late 19th century, a concern for the reach of pathogenic viral matter into human bodies has emerged as a deeply colonial project, with fears over the transformation of endemic diseases into epidemic ones conjoined with cautions of population decline in the colonies and disrupted trade routes. Colonial authorities in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America framed viral disease as a ‘public health’ problem – a problem …
All The World’S A Stage: Aesthetics, Competing Stories And Slum Clearance In Delhi, India, Richard Wolfel
All The World’S A Stage: Aesthetics, Competing Stories And Slum Clearance In Delhi, India, Richard Wolfel
The Geographical Bulletin
The rise of the modern commercial political-economic system is influencing rural to urban migration in addition to urban morphology. Slum settlements are one of the major results of rapid and often unregulated rural to urban migration. Slum settlements create a major problem for developing cities. The slum settlements do not fit the leadership’s vision for a modern city, one that can be marketed to outside businesses and organizations for investment. As a result they are often seen as a nuisance by the leadership and targeted for destruction, especially when the land of the slum is valuable. The process of slum …
Student Cyclists Experience Pm2.5 Pollution Hotspots Around An Urban University Campus, Brett W. Luce, Tate E. Barrett, Alexandra G. Ponette-González
Student Cyclists Experience Pm2.5 Pollution Hotspots Around An Urban University Campus, Brett W. Luce, Tate E. Barrett, Alexandra G. Ponette-González
The Geographical Bulletin
Although cycling has environmental and health benefits, urban cyclists are at risk of exposure to harmful concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). We used a low-cost particle sensor and MapMyRide to collect geolocated 1-minute PM2.5 measurements along four routes surrounding an urban university campus. Measurements were collected from 7:30-9:30 AM during fall 2017 and spring 2018. We found no significant differences in ride-averaged PM2.5 concentrations among routes, but all routes experienced higher concentrations when winds blew from the southeast-south-southwest. Hotspots, areas with consistently elevated PM2.5 concentrations compared to surrounding areas, were detected along all routes in areas with high traffic …

We arrived in Jordan late August 2019 for Kaelin’s, postdoctoral Fulbright research fellowship: an historical repeat assessment of Petra over the last century. This was not our f irst experience living abroad, having been stationed in Amman (Jordan) a few years previous for my own Fulbright, and subsequently being based in Barbados. In fact, after our first time living in Jordan, we ended up returning on multiple occasions to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team conducting research in Wadi Rum. Jordan is an amazing country with the most hospitable and genuine people we have ever encountered in our somewhat extensive travels, …

Nebraska’S Medicaid Expansion: An Interesting Rural-Urban Divide, H. Jason Combs, Paul R. Burger
The Geographical Bulletin
Initially established in 1965, Medicaid was expanded in 2010 to include the working poor. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2012, however, ruled that the provision of the Affordable Care Act requiring states to expand Medicaid was unconstitutional. This made it a state option whether or not to expand Medicaid. In Nebraska, the approved expansion is projected to cover approximately 90,000 Nebraskans who are 19 to 64 years of age with annual incomes 138 percent of federal poverty level. In conjunction with current Medicaid expenses, expansion is expected to make the program the second largest general fund appropriation in the state. …

One undergraduate, six Ph.D. students, and one old crusty “desert rat” of a professor share their perspectives on fieldwork. Fieldwork changed our professional lives dramatically for the better – a message that can never be emphasized enough to future students.

My “field”, Kolkata, India inspired my “work”, i.e., my research work. Before coming to the United States in 2017 for graduate school, I was associated with several queer organizations in Kolkata (also my hometown) and developed friendships and association which was the major motivation for my dissertation “SHAKTHI: Studying Healthcare Accessibility among Kothi, Transgender, and Hijra Individuals.” The word, SHAKTHI, in Sanskrit means “power” or “empowerment”. My dissertation is by and for transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people, with a goal to empower them. It is theoretically grounded in transgender geography, health geography, and geospatial analysis. During my dissertation coursework, …

Debunking Muslim Stereotypes: Learning Religious Tolerance And Acceptance Through Geographic Fieldwork, Elizabeth Nelson
The Geographical Bulletin
According to the SAGE Handbook of Fieldwork, “fieldwork” refers to primary research that occurs “in the field,” the “field” being a setting that is outside the controlled settings of the library or laboratory (McCall 2006, 2). As a human geographer, my fieldwork involves participant-observation within the ethnographic tradition that requires the insertion of me (the researcher) into the subject matter of my work – the lives and experiences of Algerian immigrants and their descendants living in Paris, France. As a Western scholar doing research on a postcolonial population embedded within their former colonizer’s social systems, it is important for me …

Bfd/S-Bfd Discriminator Collision Detection And Recovery, Anonymous
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure relates to Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) and Seamless BFD (S-BFD), namely discriminator collision detection and recovery. Specifically, a new BFD diagnostic code is presented, e.g., “BFD discriminator cross-connect (xcon).” A BFD session is held in the down state when “BFD discriminator xcon” is detected. On detection on “BFD discriminator xcon,” a new local discriminator value be chosen for session on which fault is detected. This prevents undesirable flapping of BFD session providing better stability of network. With an alarm for discriminator collision, early corrective actions can be taken to recover from such conditions.

Identifying Sudden Cardiac Arrest Risk In Adolescent Male Athletes, Alexis Sattler, Susan Rozzi
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 17(2): 874-886, 2024. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) risk factors in high school (HS) athletes. Thirty-three male soccer players from a public HS in the southeastern United States (ages 14-17) self-reported survey data. Participants reported demographic, lifestyle, heart health, COVID-19 history, and symptoms indicative of SCA risk. An electrocardiogram (ECG) assessed heart rate (HR), rhythm, and electrical activity. Resting HR and blood pressure (BP) were measured with a BP monitor. The association between COVID-19 history, HR, and BP were calculated. Participants were divided into ECG …
