Time-Restricted Feeding Reveals A Role For Neural Respiratory Clocks In Optimizing Daily Ventilatory-Metabolic Coupling In Mice, Aaron A. Jones, Gabriella M. Marino, Deanna M. Arble
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
The master circadian clock, located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), organizes the daily rhythm in minute ventilation (V̇e). However, the extent that the daily rhythm in V̇e is secondary to SCN-imposed O2 and CO2 cycles (i.e., metabolic rate) or driven by other clock mechanisms remains unknown. Here, we experimentally shifted metabolic rate using time-restricted feeding (without affecting light-induced synchronization of the SCN) to determine the influence of metabolic rate in orchestrating the daily V̇e rhythm. Mice eating predominantly at night exhibited robust daily rhythms in O2 consumption (V̇o2), CO2 production (V̇co2), and V̇e with similar peak times (approximately ZT18) that …

Watersheds offer opportunities for place-based interventions to transform systems health via preventative versus reactive approaches to management that achieve multiple co-benefits for public and environmental health. The Watershed Interventions for Systems Health in Fiji (WISH Fiji) project embraced participatory knowledge co-production and action-oriented research to identify risks to public and ecosystem health, prioritize interventions to address risks, and monitor responses of the system to interventions. We used screening filters and local knowledge to collaboratively identify five watersheds for action with high prior incidence of water-related diseases (Fiji’s “three plagues” of leptospirosis, typhoid and dengue) and high risk to downstream environmental …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: One in four newly graduated registered nurses leave their employment positions within the first year. To reduce this attrition, nursing stakeholders could focus on the final year of nursing education because students at this stage make professional career plans, including their practice destination for the graduate year and their commitment to the profession. Previous studies provide evidence of nursing students' career preferences and specialty choices. However, there is a dearth of data that focuses on the students' career decision-making process. Aim: This study examined the self-efficacy or confidence of final-year nursing students in making career decisions and the factors …

Bracketed Assessments In Behavioral Gerontology: Evaluating Preference With Present And Absent Stimuli, Flavia Eduarda Del Castillo Troche
Bracketed Assessments In Behavioral Gerontology: Evaluating Preference With Present And Absent Stimuli, Flavia Eduarda Del Castillo Troche
Theses and Dissertations
The present study evaluated the use of bracketed assessments to assess the activity preference of three individuals with dementia. The study proposed an alternative method to traditional stimulus preference assessments, to bridge the gap in behavior analytical literature within behavioral gerontology. Thus, bracketed assessments were conducted using two presentation methods, verbal plus visual presentation and verbal-only presentation. Results suggested that while participants showed consistency within low preferred activity selection in the bracketed assessment, variability was observed among participants’ preferences for high and moderate preferred activities. Both presentation methods yield similar selection results for one participant, however, the other two participants …

A significant proportion of cancer survivors will experience some form of mental health compromise across domains including mood, anxiety, psychosis, eating disorders, and substance use. This psychopathology within cancer survivors is related to a range of negative outcomes and can also have a substantial negative impact on quality of life. Along with psychopathology, cognitive impairments are also commonly experienced, resulting in deficits in memory, reasoning, decision-making, speed of processing, and concentration, collectively referred to as cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). Within the non-oncology literature, cognitive deficits are consistently demonstrated to be a key transdiagnostic aetiological feature of psychopathology, functionally contributing to …

The species-specific migratory patterns and strategies of many songbirds remain unknown or understudied, as research in animal ecology is biased toward the breeding period, with the fewest studies on the migratory period across taxa. Identifying large-scale spatiotemporal migratory patterns is challenging, as individuals within a species may vary in their migratory behavior and strategies. The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a Nearctic-Neotropical migrant that is relatively well studied during the breeding season, but its species-wide migratory patterns remain understudied. Our aim in studying Yellow Warbler movement ecology was to characterize temporal migration patterns during fall migration. We sought …

Narrowing Foia's Exemption For Business Secrets, Deepa Varadarajan
Narrowing Foia's Exemption For Business Secrets, Deepa Varadarajan
Michigan Law Review Online
This essay examines the judicial aftermath of Food Marketing Institute v. Argus Leader Media, a controversial 2019 Supreme Court decision that broadened the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) exemption for trade secrets and confidential commercial information (“Exemption 4”). This decision has made it easier for firms to hide damaging information from public view, frustrating the efforts of journalists and government watchdog groups that make FOIA requests to expose environmental harms, health risks, and failures of agency oversight. But two recent circuit court decisions highlight a promising path forward; they interpret Exemption 4 in ways that can mitigate Food Marketing’s negative …

Center for Policy Research
This note shows that for a spatial regression with a weight matrix depicting a complete bipartite network, the Moran I test for zero spatial correlation is never rejected when the alternative is positive spatial correlation no matter how large the true value of the spatial correlation coefficient. In contrast, the null hypothesis of zero spatial correlation is always rejected (with probability one asymptotically) when the alternative is negative spatial correlation and the true value of the spatial correlation coefficient is near -1.

Administrative Time Expectations For Residency Core Faculty: A Cera Study., Bryce A Ringwald, Stephen Auciello, Joseph Ginty, Melissa Jefferis, Stephen Stacey
Medical Education Articles
BACKGROUND: Academic family medicine (FM) physicians aim to balance competing needs of providing clinical care with nonclinical duties of program administration, formal education, and scholarly activity. FM residency is unique in its scope of practice, clinical settings, and training priorities, which may differ between university-based and community-based programs. In both types of programs, these competing needs are a source of faculty dissatisfaction and burnout. We performed this study to explore the allocation of nonclinical administrative full-time equivalents (FTE) for FM residency core faculty members.
RESULTS: Reported nonclinical administrative FTE time allocation is equivalent between university/medical school-based and community-based programs. The …

Osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMT) is a promising non-pharmacological treatment for low back pain, but its efficacy and mechanisms have been debated. This literature review provides a comprehensive assessment of OMT’s therapeutic effects and potential mechanisms for the treatment of low back pain. Multiple randomized trials demonstrate OMT provides statistically and clinically meaningful reductions in pain intensity and disability compared to sham treatments or standard care, particularly among patients with higher baseline symptom severity. Subgroup analyses reveal older age and absence of depression enhance OMT response rates. OMT appears safe and well-tolerated, with high patient satisfaction and reduced analgesic requirements versus …

Pubertal timing varies considerably and is associated with later health outcomes. We performed multi-ancestry genetic analyses on ~800,000 women, identifying 1,080 signals for age at menarche. Collectively, these explained 11% of trait variance in an independent sample. Women at the top and bottom 1% of polygenic risk exhibited ~11 and ~14-fold higher risks of delayed and precocious puberty, respectively. We identified several genes harboring rare loss-of-function variants in ~200,000 women, including variants in ZNF483, which abolished the impact of polygenic risk. Variant-to-gene mapping approaches and mouse gonadotropin-releasing hormone neuron RNA sequencing implicated 665 genes, including an uncharacterized G-protein-coupled receptor, GPR83, …

Importance: Heart failure (HF) and frailty frequently coexist and may share a common pathobiology, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Understanding these mechanisms may provide guidance for preventing and treating both conditions.
Objective: To identify shared pathways between incident HF and frailty in late life using large-scale proteomics.
Design, setting, and participants: In this cohort study, 4877 aptamers (Somascan v4) were measured among participants in the community-based longitudinal Atherosclerosis Risk In Communities (ARIC) cohort study at visit 3 (V3; 1993-1995; n = 10 638) and at visit 5 (V5; 2011-2013; n = 3908). Analyses were externally replicated among 3189 participants …
