Stream Water Microbial Communities Within The Portneuf Watershed In Pocatello, Idaho, Isreal Martinez, Hannah Sanger, Anirban Chakraborty

Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research

Stream water microbial communities often contain waterborne pathogens and can impact water quality and public health at large. To investigate stream water microbial diversity, 43 water samples were collected across 16 locations along the Portneuf river and its tributaries in Fall of 2022 and in the summer of 2023. Microbial communities were analyzed using high throughput 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing conducted at Idaho State University’s Molecular Research Core Facility. The predominant bacterial phylum across all sampling locations was Proteobacteria constituting more than 25% of the community in each location. Furthermore, the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic genera varied …

Dentistry And The Law: Unpaid Internships In Your Office: What You Should Know, Daniel Schulte Jd Jul 2024

Dentistry And The Law: Unpaid Internships In Your Office: What You Should Know, Daniel Schulte Jd

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

A reprint of a previous Journal column, Mr. Schulte discusses how unpaid internships require careful legal consideration. Interns must primarily benefit educationally from their tasks to avoid being classified as employees, necessitating compensation. Office work typically performed by employees must not be assigned to interns. Patient consent is required to observe dental procedures, and interns must receive HIPAA training. Exposure to hazardous materials should be avoided, adhering to laws like Michigan’s Occupational Safety and Health Act. Proper training and task limitations ensure compliance and a beneficial internship experience.

Therapeutic Potentials Of The Gut-Brain-Microbiota Axis For Prevention And Treatment Of Motivational Deficits In Ecohiv Infected Rats, Mason T. Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

People living with HIV begin to experience gastrointestinal disturbances as early as 6 months after initial infection. Regardless of adherence to combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), the gut microbiome of people living with HIV maintains a state of dysbiosis throughout the rest of their lives, providing potential for a novel target for improving the lives of those living with HIV. The present study investigated the impact EcoHIV and cocaine have on the gut microbiome of F344/N rats. Fecal samples were collected from 20 female and 20 male animals at baseline, following self-administration of cocaine, and following inoculation with EcoHIV or Saline. …

Sacred Symbols In A Secular World: Religious Imagery In The Works Of Jack London And Sylvia Plath, Kathleen Elizabeth Long Jul 2024

Sacred Symbols In A Secular World: Religious Imagery In The Works Of Jack London And Sylvia Plath, Kathleen Elizabeth Long

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to investigate and analyze the presence of religious symbolism in the novels of Jack London and Sylvia Plath, two authors whose atheist beliefs comingle in intriguing ways with this sacred imagery, offering rich ground for comparative analysis. Despite London’s fervent Darwinist beliefs, he injects subtle religious motif within The Call of the Wild, devoted to promoting atheist thought yet yearning for the grandiosity of myth. Similarly, Plath uses allusions to Judaism within her novel The Bell Jar, subverting classical religious tradition to associate it with themes of animal savagery. By studying these two texts, this …

Interface Between Sensorimotor Dynamics And Trunk-Hip Movement Control: Implications For Movement Assessment In Low Back Pain, John Ryan Gilliam Jul 2024

Interface Between Sensorimotor Dynamics And Trunk-Hip Movement Control: Implications For Movement Assessment In Low Back Pain, John Ryan Gilliam

Theses and Dissertations

Low back pain is the leading cause of activity limitation and work absence and results in billions of dollars in healthcare expenditures. Impaired trunk-hip movement control is associated with the development of back pain and the persistence of symptoms. Theories suggest a causal relationship between altered sensorimotor dynamics, including altered afferent somatosensory information from the periphery and neuroplastic central nervous system adaptations, and impaired trunk-hip movement patterns. We characterized trunk-hip movement patterns and their associated sensorimotor brain dynamics in people with and without chronic low back pain (cLBP). Supine, atop an instrumented system, 48 individuals with cLBP and 37 healthy …

Collective Victim Beliefs In The Aftermath Of Historical Trauma And Their Effects On Psychological Well-Being: Initial Findings Among The Polish Diaspora In The United States, Magdalena Skrodzka, Johanna Ray Vollhardt Jul 2024

Collective Victim Beliefs In The Aftermath Of Historical Trauma And Their Effects On Psychological Well-Being: Initial Findings Among The Polish Diaspora In The United States, Magdalena Skrodzka, Johanna Ray Vollhardt

Psychology

Historical trauma impacts the affected groups long after traumatic events. In response to such experiences, people may make sense of this history through collective victimisation beliefs that compare their ingroup's experiences to outgroups' experiences. Additionally, they may perceive these collective experiences as central to their self and group identity, or distance themselves from them. However, it is not yet well understood how distinct beliefs about historical trauma are linked to psychological well-being. The present study examined this question among the Polish diaspora in the United States (N = 280). Mediation analyses showed a negative indirect effect of exclusive victim beliefs …

How Passion Functions In Sport Applicant Attraction: A Biometric Approach, Jiayao Qi Jul 2024

How Passion Functions In Sport Applicant Attraction: A Biometric Approach, Jiayao Qi

Theses and Dissertations

Passion has been extensively researched from the perspective of athletes, entrepreneurs, and employees. In this dissertation, the researcher conducted an in-depth investigation of the way passion functions in sport job attraction. The two-stage experimental design combines the pioneer biometric methodology with qualitative inquiry, and 25 job seekers selected from a larger sample participated in the biometric lab. Results indicate that the interplay between cognitive and affective appraisals is critical in explaining sport job seekers’ highly individualistic and discriminative attraction toward work opportunities in sport. In particular, sports job seekers foster work passion through their multiple identifications with sport (playing history, …

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

In recent years, the muslim majority countries’ focus on women’s labor force participation has grown, particularly Indonesia which stands out with its high female labor force participation rate. We aim to shed light on the relationship between religion and work decisions in Indonesia, employing data from the World Value Survey and utilizing logistic regression analysis. Our findings reveal that active participation in religious activities positively affects muslim women’s likelihood of working part-time and in the agricultural sector. Through the results, policymakers and relevant stakeholders can consider leveraging religious organizations as potential channels for promoting women’s labor force participation.

Pulling The Tap: Examining Ergonomic Intervention On Bartenders Experiencing Occupational Deficits, Makayla Descault

OTD DEx Reports - College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"Musculoskeletal disorders causing chronic pain has become a growing issue in the brewing industry and has caused workers to be prone to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and chronic pain. The explanation for this trend is due to engagement in repetitive motions such as lifting heavy or awkward objects, reaching, standing, bending, or twisting repetitively. Long term, these injuries can negatively impact occupational engagements outside of work. Current literature indicates that ergonomic educational programs can reduce musculoskeletal injuries for workers and be cost effective for small businesses. Data gathered from previous case studies related to breweries and ergonomic programs was used to …
