Focused Interventions To Decrease Inpatient Falls, Alyssa Nicole Watchmaker Smith
Focused Interventions To Decrease Inpatient Falls, Alyssa Nicole Watchmaker Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background: Falls are the most commonly reported safety incidence in the hospital setting (Morris R. et al., 2017). Because falls may be a result of many factors, evidence shows that multicomponent fall interventions best reduce fall rates (Bargmann et al., 2020; Dykes et al., 2010; Dykes et al., 2020; Strini et al., 2021). In this project, a needs assessment identified a need for fall prevention strategies to reduce fall rates on inpatient units.
Setting: A step-down/telemetry Cardiovascular Intervention Unit (CVI) (15 beds) and Cardiovascular Unit (CVU) (12 beds) in a suburban private hospital.
Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based project …

Improving The Integration Of Whole Health Into A Veterans Affairs Outpatient Primary Care Clinic., Diana Lynn Blair
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Abstract
The annual $4.1 trillion price tag for healthcare with a simultaneous decline in patient health outcomes is the catalyst to change the current healthcare culture from disease-focused to a Whole Health wellness and prevention model. Transforming to preventative care would remedy the current costly healthcare system, thus Veterans Health Administration (VHA) set forth a mandate to implement Whole Health (WH) system wide. The purpose of this project was to provide a training program that facilitated the implementation of WH and improve the documentation of WH in the electronic health record (EHR). A needs assessment provided to the Fort Knox …

A Government Branch Of Its Own: Reining In The Power Of The Regents Of The University Of California, Veronica Gray
A Government Branch Of Its Own: Reining In The Power Of The Regents Of The University Of California, Veronica Gray
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
The University of California system is the crown jewel of American public universities. However, Californians have virtually no say over University of California policies. At the University of California’s inception, the drafters of the 1879 California Constitution envisioned a school system controlled by a Board of Regents who are largely insulated from politics. The autonomy from elected officials and the public allows the Regents to have nearly full control over a public good. The Regents’ autonomy and control over the University of California system has led to conflict between the Regents, the public, and state legislators regarding land use, labor, …

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications
Background. Machine learning (ML) has developed classifiers differentiating patient groups despite concerns regarding diagnostic reliability. An alternative strategy, used here, is to develop a functional classifier (hyperplane) (e.g. distinguishing the neural responses to received reward v. received punishment in typically developing (TD) adolescents) and then determine the functional integrity of the response (reward response distance from the hyperplane) in adolescents with externalizing and internalizing conditions and its associations with symptom clusters.
Methods. Two hundred and ninety nine adolescents (mean age = 15.07 ± 2.30 years, 117 females) were divided into three groups: a training sample of TD adolescents …

Introduction: Numerous studies have highlighted cognitive benefits in lifelong bilinguals during aging, manifesting as superior performance on cognitive tasks compared to monolingual counterparts. Yet, the cognitive impacts of acquiring a new language in older adulthood remain unexplored. In this study, we assessed both behavioral and fMRI responses during a Stroop task in older adults, pre- and post language-learning intervention.
Methods: A group of 41 participants (age: 60–80) from a predominantly monolingual environment underwent a four-month online language course, selecting a new language of their preference. This intervention mandated engagement for 90 minutes a day, five days a week. …

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Our understanding of human brain function can be greatly aided by studying analogous brain structures in other organisms. One brain structure with neurochemical and anatomical homology throughout vertebrate species is the locus coeruleus (LC), a small collection of norepinephrine (NE)-containing neurons in the brainstem that project throughout the central nervous system. The LC is involved in nearly every aspect of brain function, including arousal and learning, which has been extensively examined in rats and nonhuman primates using single-unit recordings. Recent work has expanded into putative LC single-unit electrophysiological recordings in a nonmodel species, the zebra finch. Given the importance of …

The Harding University Speech Clinic As A Community Outreach Program In White County, Melaney Binkley
McNair Scholars Research
A university speech clinic provides, at no cost to clients, more selective, limited speech and language services by a student clinician in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist (SLP). A private speech clinic requires certified speech-language pathologists and assistants. The purpose of this study was to analyze the Harding University Speech Clinic’s client population, particularly in terms of socioeconomic status, since the city in which the university is located has a higher average poverty rate than the state. Additionally, the study sought to measure the level of client satisfaction with the services …
Automated Concrete Bridge Deck Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Systems Collected Data: A Machine Learning Approach, Rojal Pokhrel
Automated Concrete Bridge Deck Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Systems Collected Data: A Machine Learning Approach, Rojal Pokhrel
Master's Theses
Many national infrastructures, particularly bridges, are becoming older and older day by day. Their safe operation and maintenance require routine monitoring and inspection. There are lots of bridge inspection specifications and manuals to guide inspectors to give the proper recommendations about the bridge structure and safety. These manuals and specifications require bridge inspectors to manually inspect the bridge and recommend maintenance and repair tasks referring to the specific criteria available in the manuals. In time, the application of technology makes many Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) advancements during the phase of data collection. For the image processing and analysis of collected …

The Comparison Between Chlorhexidine And Povidone-Iodine Antiseptics In The Operating Room To Prevent Surgical Site Infections, Eleanor Decarolis
Nurse Residency
Background: Surgical site infections (SSI's) are one of the most common and costly complications from surgery. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and Povidione-Iodine (PVI) are the most common antiseptics used in surgery. The efficacy and uses of these surgical preps have been studied to determine the most effective in preventing surgical site infections.
Use Of Language-Adapted Resources In The Non-English Speaking Patient Population, Jenny Lansing, Emma Dubois
Use Of Language-Adapted Resources In The Non-English Speaking Patient Population, Jenny Lansing, Emma Dubois
Nurse Residency
Background: Across the healthcare field, it is essential that patients and families can both communicate and understand the care they receive. A lack in this can lead to delays in care, missed findings, unnecessary care and costs, and even preventable emergencies. Limited research surrounds the impact that language barriers pose as well as methods to address this.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic, noninfectious disease that affects a large population of adults in the world. Typically, it is associated with obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and the consumption of undesirable meals (Nakrani et al., 2020/2023). Even with various treatments available for type 2 diabetes, most patients find it challenging to maintain a steady blood glucose level.

Improving The Balance Between Patient Satisfaction And Efficient Ed Throughput, Jessica Graham, Izzi Marceau
Nurse Residency
Background: Patients come into the Emergency Department (ED)when they are having an emergent health concern. One role of the ED nurse is balancing the patient expectations of care with ensuring the flow of the department. The studies reviewed here examine the way that ED nurses can help to coordinate realistic expectations for patients as they are waiting to be seen.
