Investigating The Role Of Betrayal Blindness Between High Betrayal Trauma And Dating Violence Among Young Mothers Maltreated As Children, Lauren Catherine Wallace
Investigating The Role Of Betrayal Blindness Between High Betrayal Trauma And Dating Violence Among Young Mothers Maltreated As Children, Lauren Catherine Wallace
Theses and Dissertations
Young mothers experience greater rates of dating violence (DV) victimization and perpetration compared to their non-parenting, female peers as well as older mothers (Joly & Connolly, 2016). Child maltreatment is a salient predictor of DV victimization and perpetration (Li et al., 2019; Murphy et al., 2020). According to Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT), child maltreatment perpetrated by a close loved one, such as a parent or primary caregiver, is defined as a high betrayal trauma (Freyd, 1996). Young mothers who experienced a high betrayal trauma may endorse betrayal blindness as a way to cope with abuse from their caregiver (Freyd & …

Burned Out By The Binary: How Misgendering Of Nonbinary Employees Contributes To Workplace Burnout, Sky Corby, Larry R. Martinez, Nicholas A. Smith, Kelly M. Hamilton, Mordeky C. Dullum
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
We examine nonbinary employees’ experiences with misgendering in work contexts and draw from minority stress theory (Meyer, 2003) to understand the consequences of misgendering. Our findings from 29 semi-structured interviews with nonbinary individuals revealed that although being misgendered is a common and highly stressful experience (distal stressor), the emotional labor associated with anticipating and reacting to misgendering acts as an additional and more proximal stressor. Together, these stressors jointly contribute to all three components of employee burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced professional efficacy). We also identified support from coworkers and supervisors (in preventing and addressing misgendering) as important ameliorating …

Marketing In Higher Education: The Effects On The College Choice Experience Of First-Generation Latinx Students, David Cortez
Dissertations and Theses
The Latinx population in the United States has drastically increased over the last twenty years. During the same period, the number of first-generation Latinx students enrolling in higher education post-recession has also increased by as much as 1.5 million students. The expansion of the Latinx student population in Oregon has mirrored the national trend by exponentially increasing over the last 10 years. As the population of first-generation Latinx students grows, it becomes essential to explore the issues and barriers Latinx students face in making their college choices. Previous researchers have found that selecting the right institution is important to increase …

Serum From Patients With Cirrhosis Undergoing Liver Transplantation Induces Permeability In Human Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells, Michael Bokoch, Fengyun Xu, Krishna Govindaraju, Elliot Lloyd, Kyle Tsutsui, Rishi Kothari, Dieter Adelmann, Jérémie Joffre, Judith Hellman
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Patients with cirrhosis undergoing liver transplantation frequently exhibit systemic inflammation, coagulation derangements, and edema, indicating endothelial dysfunction. This syndrome may worsen after ischemia-reperfusion injury of the liver graft, coincident with organ dysfunction that worsens patient outcomes. Little is known about changes in endothelial permeability during liver transplantation. We hypothesized that sera from these patients would increase permeability in cultured human endothelial cells
METHODS: Adults with cirrhosis presenting for liver transplantation provided consent for blood collection during surgery. Sera were prepared at five time points spanning the entire operation. The barrier function of human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells in culture …

A 63-year-old male developed a mycotic pseudoaneurysm (MPA) two months after a renal transplant at the anastomotic site. He presented with uncontrolled hypertension and elevated creatinine. The pseudoaneurysm occurred at the anastomosis between the two donor renal arteries and the left external iliac artery. We describe a unique surgical reconstruction where the MPA was resected and the vasculature was reconstructed using deceased donor vessels. A deceased donor common iliac artery including superior gluteal and inferior gluteal branches were used as a jump graft from the contralateral common iliac artery to the two transplanted renal arteries. The external iliac artery was …

Human Centered Approaches And Taxonomies For Explainable Artificial Intelligence, Helen Sheridan, Emma Murphy, Dympna O'Sullivan
Conference papers
Recent interest within the research community related to explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has led to a profuse amount of literature on the subject. Those who wish to tackle the domain from an HCI focus may be presented with overwhelming material, most of which does not pertain to human aspects of XAI. Taxonomies can serve to categorize a subject into topic areas and distill content into an overview of the field. This late breaking work intends to help those within the HCI community with a focus on XAI to understand relevant aspects of human centered XAI. We also present a taxonomy …

In the human brain, a multiple-demand (MD) network plays a key role in cognitive control, with core components in lateral frontal, dorsomedial frontal and lateral parietal cortex, and multivariate activity patterns that discriminate the contents of many cognitive activities. In prefrontal cortex of the behaving monkey, different cognitive operations are associated with very different patterns of neural activity, while details of a particular stimulus are encoded as small variations on these basic patterns (Sigala et al, 2008). Here, using the advanced fMRI methods of the Human Connectome Project and their 360-region cortical parcellation, we searched for a similar result in …

Adoptive cellular therapy (ACT) using memory-like (ML) natural killer (NK) cells, generated through overnight ex vivo activation with IL-12, IL-15, and IL-18, has shown promise for treating hematologic malignancies. We recently reported that a multifunctional fusion molecule, HCW9201, comprising IL-12, IL-15, and IL-18 domains could replace individual cytokines for priming human ML NK cell programming ("Prime" step). However, this approach does not include ex vivo expansion, thereby limiting the ability to test different doses and schedules. Here, we report the design and generation of a multifunctional fusion molecule, HCW9206, consisting of human IL-7, IL-15, and IL-21 cytokines. We observed > 300-fold …

Cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) play a pivotal role in cell cycle and cancer development. Targeting CDK4/6 has demonstrated promising effects against breast cancer. However, resistance to CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i), such as palbociclib, remains a substantial challenge in clinical settings. Using high-throughput combinatorial drug screening and genomic sequencing, we find that the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) is activated via O-GlcNAcylation by O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) in palbociclib-resistant breast cancer cells and tumors. Mechanistically, O-GlcNAcylation of MITF at Serine 49 enhances its interaction with importin α/β, thus promoting its translocation to nuclei, where it suppresses palbociclib-induced senescence. Inhibition of MITF or …

Exclusion Disguised As Access: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Postsecondary Disability Service Websites, Lavonne Ciezadlo Kopca
Theses and Dissertations
College students with disabilities are an overlooked minority population. However, they comprise an ever-increasing student population in postsecondary institutions. Yet students with disabilities do not persist or graduate at rates similar to their able-bodied peers. People with disabilities have historically been viewed as a low-status group and have been excluded from various social, educational, and economic benefits of citizenship. This study used a critical theoretical lens of social dominance theory to explore ways that higher education may be complicit in perpetuating discrimination and inequities through policies or discourse found in the content of student disability and diversity office websites. Packaging plays a crucial role in protecting food by providing excellent mechanical properties as well as effectively blocking water vapor, oxygen, oil, and other contaminants. The low degradation of widely used petroleum-based plastics leads to environmental pollution and poses health risks. This has drawn interest in renewable biopolymers as sustainable alternatives. The seafood industry generates significant waste that is rich in bioactive substances like chitin, chitosan, gelatins, and alginate, which can replace synthetic polymers in food packaging. Although biopolymers offer biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, their films often lack mechanical and barrier properties compared with synthetic polymer films. This comprehensive review …

Rehabilitation After Scapular Fractures, Andrea Lopes Sauers, Rita Ator, Jaime González
Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Scapular fractures are uncommon, and published guidelines on the rehabilitation of scapular fractures are limited. This chapter summarizes the current concepts that can assist decision-making for rehabilitating patients following scapular fracture. The STAR-shoulder and the modified algorithm for scapular dysfunction are viable frameworks to aid decision-making and can aptly guide rehabilitation after scapular fracture. The selection of the appropriate rehabilitation strategies after scapular fracture requires a close understanding of the mechanism of injury, type of management, existing comorbidities, and associated injuries. Thus, communication between the physical therapist and the surgeon or physician is vital for quality care and positive patient …

Relationship Between Respect, Trust, And Turnover Intentions, Christina Love Harmon
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Leaders in the U.S. federal government are concerned with employee intent to leave, as it is the number one predictor of actual employee turnover. Grounded in social exchange theory, the purpose of this quantitative ex-post facto correlation study was to examine the relationship between social exchange and employee intent to leave. The participants were 256 employees from all agencies within the U.S. federal government who completed the 2022 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, including the Intent to Leave Scale. The results of the multinomial logistics regression were significant, χ² (4) = 87.875, p = <.001. In the final model, two predictors were significant, respect for department leaders, χ² (12) = 43.631, p = <.001, and trust in direct supervisor, χ² (12) = 32.513, p = 001. A key recommendation is for business leaders to model positive attitudes and behaviors by fostering a culture of trust, respect, and integrity to contribute to employee satisfaction and retention significantly. The implications for positive social change include the potential to retain valued employees who are committed to achieving organizational goals and improving productivity for organizational success

Novel Antivirals Unveiled Against Acute And Persistent Coxsackievirus B3 Infection Via Rapid Screening, Maria Del Mar Villanueva Guzman
Master's Theses
Enteroviruses cause 10 to 15 million infections annually in the United States, and Coxsackievirus B3 is one of the most commonly reported. Coxsackieviruses may become persistent, characterized as a viral infection that is not cleared from host cells and that generates a continuous infection. Patients who develop persistent CVB3 infection may not respond to the same antivirals as an acute infection, which may be detrimental. Therefore, there is a need for broad-range antiviral drugs to combat acute and persistent CVB3 infection, as there is no well-accepted treatment available. We developed a model system to study persistent CVB3 using a pancreatic …
