BACKGROUND: Black individuals in the U.S. face increasing racial disparities in drug overdose related to social determinants of health, including place-based features. Mobile outreach efforts work to mitigate social determinants by servicing geographic areas with low drug treatment and overdose prevention access but are often limited by convenience-based targets. Geographic information systems (GIS) are often used to characterize and visualize the overdose crisis and could be translated to community to guide mobile outreach services. The current study examines the initial acceptability and appropriateness of GIS to facilitate data-driven outreach for reducing overdose inequities facing Black individuals.
METHODS: We convened a …

Brca1 Secondary Splice-Site Mutations Drive Exon-Skipping And Parp Inhibitor Resistance, Ksenija Nesic, John J Krais, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
PARP inhibitor (PARPi) therapy has transformed outcomes for patients with homologous recombination DNA repair (HRR) deficient ovarian cancers, for example those with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene defects. Unfortunately, PARPi resistance is common. Multiple resistance mechanisms have been described, including secondary mutations that restore the HR gene reading frame. BRCA1 splice isoforms △11 and △11q can contribute to PARPi resistance by splicing out the mutation-containing exon, producing truncated, partially functional proteins. However, the clinical impacts and underlying drivers of BRCA1 exon skipping are not fully understood. We analyzed nine ovarian and breast cancer patient derived xenografts (PDX) with BRCA1 exon 11 frameshift …

Cardioprotective Efficacy Of Sevoflurane In Patients With Rheumatic Heart Disease Undergoing Heart Valve Surgery Under Cardiopulmonary Bypass, Vu Thanh Lam, Nguyen Quoc Kinh, Nguyen Minh Ly
Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Objectives
In this study, we investigated whether cardioprotective properties of sevoflurane were expressed in patients with rheumatic heart disease undergoing heart valve surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
Methods
Fifty patients with rheumatic heart disease undergoing heart valve surgery under CPB were randomly assigned to receive total anesthesia with sevoflurane or propofol during surgery. Except for this, anesthetic and surgical management was the same in all patients. The primary outcomes were postoperative high-sensitive cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB) release. The secondary outcomes were hemodynamic events and short-term clinical outcomes (within 30 days after surgery).

The PY4 mission aims to enable autonomous swarms of small spacecraft by both reducing the manufacturing cost and integration effort required for individual spacecraft, and by advancing guidance, navigation, and control algorithms that increase autonomy and reduce or eliminate the need for expensive sensor, actuator, and propulsion hardware. PY4 consists of four 1.5U CubeSats, and builds on the PyCubed open-source avionics platform and the previous V-R3x mission. To date, PY4 has successfully demonstrated high-data-rate mesh networking, precise inter-satellite ranging, range-based relative orbit determination, and magnetorquer-only sun pointing. A drag-based formation-flying experiment is also planned for an extended mission.

We report the initial operation results of the first Japanese 6U CubeSat X-ray observatory NinjaSat, which was launched into a sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of 530 km on November 11, 2023, by the SpaceX Transporter-9 mission. NinjaSat is designed to observe bright X-ray sources in the sky, such as black holes and neutron stars, which are often difficult to observe with modern large X-ray satellites due to instrument limitations. After the payload verification, NinjaSat observed the Crab Nebula on February 9 and correctly detected the 33.8 ms pulsation from the neutron star. With this observation, NinjaSat met the minimum …

Autonomy - the ability of system to retask itself in response to unexpected/unmodeled events - is an enabling technology for space missions. However, autonomy carries risk: what if the system makes unexpected or dangerous decisions? How can human operators trust that the system will not exceed certain bounds of behavior? Are we sure that an autonomous vehicle will outperform a human-directed system?
To address these questions, the Space Systems Research Laboratory (SSRL) of Saint Louis University is developing the Distributed Observation Reasoning and Reaction Experiment (DORRE). DORRE consists of 8 spacecraft operating together in low-Earth orbit to conduct a series …

Canada’s northern Inuit and Indigenous communities are experiencing climate change four times faster than the rest of the planet, impacting their traditional means of travel, hunting, and fishing. As temperatures rise, the sea ice forms later and melts earlier, allowing less time to perform these activities safely. While current satellite radiometry data can provide insight into the safety of the ice, Inuit communities require more timely and open access to this data. ArcticSat is a 3U CubeSat being co-developed with the Hamlet of Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, Canada, made to accomplish these goals. Community co-development ensures that community members lead the …

Space weather events can cause harmful effects to spacecraft and communications in Low Earth Orbit, where the cosmic radiation environment during such an event is understudied. Real-time data that characterizes this environment in detail with respect to spatial and temporal characteristics could help us better understand particle composition and interactions in LEO during a solar event, as well as enhance existing predictive models for space mission planning. Current approaches have limited information on particle composition with respect to dose and energy rates, and are hindered by high costs in deploying large space weather monitoring constellations. This proposed satellite mission, PULSE, …

Increasing Operating Room Efficiency Through Decreased Turnover Times, R. Keith Wolfskill
Increasing Operating Room Efficiency Through Decreased Turnover Times, R. Keith Wolfskill
Student Scholarly Projects
The Operating Room (OR) is the financial engine of the modern hospital or surgical center. Over 40% of the hospital's cost is invested in the OR, but the facility recoups a monetary return of around 60-70%. Turnover time is a crucial factor in reducing costs. Uncontrolled, it can inflate operating costs, but when managed effectively, it can boost surgeon, patient, and staff satisfaction, enhance patient safety, and significantly reduce operational costs. The literature underscores the importance of reducing the time between operating room turnovers to improve OR efficiency. A key strategy that research consistently shows to be effective is the …

MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The gut microbiota plays a major role in human diseases. The impact of these microbes on human health comes not only from individual microbes but also from their interactions with each other. A prime example of this is Clostridioides difficile, an intestinal pathobiont that causes severe gastrointestinal illness. C. difficile works cooperatively with other gut bacteria, including Klebsiella pneumoniae. We hypothesized that K. pneumoniae would work synergistically with C. difficile and promote its pathogenesis. We screened over 40 K. pneumoniae strains to assess their interaction with the intestinal mucus layer, a key colonization site for C. difficile. …
