Paradox Of Trust: Examining The Intermediaries That Shape Trust In Va Among The Veteran Population, Jonathan Mills

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has faced significant challenges in maintaining the trust of the veterans it aims to serve—especially those veterans most at risk for adverse outcomes. While veterans currently enrolled in VA care report high trust in the quality of their care, nonenrolled veterans report much lower levels of trust, preventing them from seeking the care they need. This study explored the complex dynamics and drivers of low trust among veterans who are not enrolled in VA healthcare, versus higher reported trust among veterans who are. The research leveraged organizational reputation theory and the macro cognitive perspective …

Nfl Franchise Departures And Nearby Home Prices, Brad R. Humphreys, Geoffrey Propheter Aug 2024

Nfl Franchise Departures And Nearby Home Prices, Brad R. Humphreys, Geoffrey Propheter

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Research shows that US professional sports facilities positively impact nearby house prices. New facilities typically have existing teams, complicating a separate assessment of the impact of teams and facilities. Existing research analyzed departures of pro basketball teams, but arenas host many non-sporting events. These results may not generalize. We exploit the relocation of two professional football teams to investigate the impact of team departures on home sales. Difference-in-differences and repeat sales model results indicate proximity to one team represented an amenity while proximity to the other did not. Differences in urban form likely explains this heterogeneity.

Under climatic warming, glaciers are becoming a secondary source of atmospheric contaminants originally released into the environment decades ago. This phenomenon has been well-documented for glaciers near emission sources. However, less is known about polar ice sheets and ice caps. Radionuclides are one of the contaminants that can be remobilised through ice melting and accumulate in cryoconite material on the surface of glaciers. To understand the cycling of radionuclides in polar glacial contexts, we evaluate the radioactivity of cryoconite samples from Flade Isblink, a High Arctic ice cap in northeast Greenland. The measured radioactivity is among the highest reported across …

Two Perspectives On Macroeconomics And Inequality, Aleph Shin Aug 2024

Two Perspectives On Macroeconomics And Inequality, Aleph Shin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the intricate relationships between macroeconomic forces and economic inequality through two distinct but interconnected lenses. Chapter 1 examines how heightened import competition, a key aspect of globalization, reshapes the occupational structure in the U.S., highlighting the adverse effects of import competition on employment across different occupations, especially those with low and middle wages. Employing industry-level trade and technology measures to assess the impacts on eleven finely defined occupational groups, this chapter reveals that import competition serves as a significant yet often overlooked driver of job polarization and the decline of middle-skill occupations, contrasting with the polarization literature …

A key challenge in aging research is to extend lifespan in tandem with slowing down functional decline so that the life with good health (healthspan) can be extended. Here, we show that monthly clearance of a small number of cells, which highly express p21Cip1 (p21high), starting from 20 months improves cardiac and metabolic function, and extends both median and maximum lifespan in mice. Importantly, by assessing health and physical function of these mice monthly until death, we show that clearance of p21high cells improves physical function at all remaining stages of life, suggesting healthspan extension. Mechanistically, …

Somatic mutations in non-malignant tissues are selected for because they confer increased clonal fitness. However, it is uncertain whether these clones can benefit organ health. Here, ultra-deep targeted sequencing of 150 liver samples from 30 chronic liver disease patients revealed recurrent somatic mutations. PKD1 mutations were observed in 30% of patients, whereas they were only detected in 1.3% of hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs). To interrogate tumor suppressor functionality, we perturbed PKD1 in two HCC cell lines and six in vivo models, in some cases showing that PKD1 loss protected against HCC, but in most cases showing no impact. However, Pkd1 haploinsufficiency …

Deltex Family E3 Ligases Specifically Ubiquitinate The Terminal Adp-Ribose Of Poly(Adp-Ribosyl)Ation, Matthew Kelly, Chase Dietz, Samuel Kasson, Yong Zhang, Michael J Holtzman, In-Kwon Kim

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) are critical to regulating cellular activities, such as the response to DNA damage and cell death. PARPs catalyze a reversible post-translational modification (PTM) in the form of mono- or poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation. This type of modification is known to form a ubiquitin-ADP-ribose (Ub-ADPR) conjugate that depends on the actions of Deltex family of E3 ubiquitin ligases (DTXs). In particular, DTXs add ubiquitin to the 3'-OH of adenosine ribose' in ADP-ribose, which effectively sequesters ubiquitin and impedes ubiquitin-dependent signaling. Previous work demonstrates DTX function for ubiquitination of protein-free ADPR, mono-ADP-ribosylated peptides, and ADP-ribosylated nucleic acids. However, the dynamics of DTX-mediated …

Solid tumours often endure nutrient insufficiency during progression. How tumour cells adapt to temporal and spatial nutrient insufficiency remains unclear. We previously identified STC2 as one of the most upregulated genes in cells exposed to nutrient insufficiency by transcriptome screening, indicating the potential of STC2 in cellular adaptation to nutrient insufficiency. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying STC2 induction by nutrient insufficiency and subsequent adaptation remain elusive. Here, we report that STC2 protein is dramatically increased and secreted into the culture media by Gln-/Glc- deprivation. STC2 promoter contains cis-elements that are activated by ATF4 and p65/RelA, two transcription factors activated by …
