Effects Of Intensity On Emotion Regulation Strategy Preferences Are Emotion-Specific, Bram Van Bockstaele, Patrick J.F. Clarke, Jemma Todd, Frances Meeten, Julie L. Ji, Julian Basanovic, Nigel T.M. Chen, Daniel Rudaizky, Lies Notebaert
School of Psychology
Adaptive emotion regulation is characterized by the ability to flexibly select and switch between different strategies, depending on individual and contextual factors. Previous studies have shown that people prefer disengagement strategies to regulate more intense emotions, while they prefer engagement strategies to regulate less intense emotions. In this study, we investigated whether – in addition to the intensity of emotions – the discrete emotion type (disgust versus fear) also affects emotion regulation strategy preferences. A total of 401 students from three different universities completed an emotion regulation choice task in which they could choose between distraction and reappraisal to regulate …

Genetic studies have identified numerous regions associated with plasma fibrinogen levels in Europeans, yet missing heritability and limited inclusion of non-Europeans necessitates further studies with improved power and sensitivity. Compared with array-based genotyping, whole genome sequencing (WGS) data provides better coverage of the genome and better representation of non-European variants. To better understand the genetic landscape regulating plasma fibrinogen levels, we meta-analyzed WGS data from the NHLBI's Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (n=32,572), with array-based genotype data from the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) Consortium (n=131,340) imputed to the TOPMed or Haplotype Reference Consortium …

Results: The response rate was 40% (46/116). The average number of applications received per program was 486.5 ± 98.1. Most programs (78%) have multiple independent reviewers for …
Investigation Of Change And Stability In Medical Students’ Ophthalmology Specialty Intention From Matriculation To Graduation: Gender And Racial/Ethnic Differences, Douglas Grbic
Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Purpose
Using data from a national sample of graduating medical students, this study describes the patterns of change and stability in ophthalmology intentions relative to various other specialties and explains how those patterns vary by the intersection of gender and race/ethnicity.
Method
National survey data from MD-granting medical school graduates who matriculated between 2013-2014 and 2018-2019 and graduated by 2021-2022 were examined. The outcome consisted of four groups based on ophthalmology specialty intention at matriculation and graduation: non-ophthalmology, switched out, switched to, and reaffirmation. Percentages for “reaffirmation” and “switched to” were each compared to the median values for 13 major …

No. 02: Leveraging Food Remittances For Enhanced Food Security In Urban Africa, Jonathan Crush
Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network
This policy brief highlights the critical yet underexplored role of food remittances in enhancing food security across Africa. While global attention has predominantly focused on cash remittances and their economic impacts, food remittances – defined as the transfer of foodstuffs by migrants to their home regions – play a vital role in ensuring the availability, accessibility, and stability of food supplies for both rural and urban households. These remittances help bridge the food security gap between urban and rural areas, with food produced in rural regions supporting the nutritional needs of family members in cities. The reciprocal flow of resources, …

This paper investigates the parallels between predatory New Religious Movements (NRMs) and fraudulent business schemes such as pyramid and Ponzi schemes. By examining their recruitment tactics, psychological manipulation, and exploitation of economic vulnerabilities, this paper reveals how these organizations target socially and economically unstable populations for financial gain. The study proposes two strategic interventions: first, using the Social Vulnerability Index to develop proactive government responses, including targeted public service announcements and law enforcement education; and second, creating an IRS database requiring detailed financial reporting from tax-exempt organizations. The goal is to address systemic vulnerabilities through data-driven policy, increased transparency, and …

Faculty Research 2024
BACKGROUND: Emerging cancer treatments are often most available to socially advantaged individuals. This study examines the relationship of patient educational attainment, income level, and rurality to the receipt of genome-matched treatment and overall survival.
METHODS: Survey and clinical data were collected from patients with cancer (n = 1258) enrolled in the Maine Cancer Genomics Initiative. Logistic regression models examined whether receipt of genome-matched treatment differed by patient education, income, and rurality. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression were conducted to evaluate 12-month mortality. We completed additional exploratory analyses using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox models stratified by receipt of genome-matched treatment. Logistic …

Imposter Participants In Online Qualitative Interviews: A Protocol For Trauma-Informed And Equitable Decision-Making, L. B. Klein, Caro Cruys
The Qualitative Report
Imposter participants are an emerging concern in qualitative research due to the recent increase in online recruitment and virtual interviews. Unfortunately, there is limited guidance on how to address imposter participants in an equitable, trauma-informed way. To bridge this gap, we share imposter participant red flags, challenges, and a protocol that provides questions to ask and possible activities to engage in throughout the research process from conceptualization through findings dissemination. We ground this guidance in examples from our recent study with LGBTQ+ (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence.
