Lgbt Legal Issues In Jesuit Higher Education, Bryce Hughes

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

Issues facing the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community can prove to be a legal nightmare for college and university administrators to address, particularly at religiously affiliated institutions like Jesuit colleges. Administrators have to walk a fine line between nondiscrimination statutes and the religious beliefs and teachings of the school’s affiliation. This paper explores the main legal issues pertaining to the LGBT community on campus, including students, employees (faculty and staff), and university policy. It offers a historical perspective on these issues, including a quick overview of Catholic Church doctrine and relevant United States case law, and summarizes implications …

Student Suicide On Campus, Shannon Foley

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

Recent legal cases regarding student suicide or suicidal ideation demonstrates the variance in actions taken by student development professionals on college campuses around the country. The response by administrators has resulted in law suits and brings into question the timing and manner in which the decision to notify the parents of a suicidal student may occur. Disclosure of a student’s physical or mental condition must be weighed against the protection of their privacy, as well as the overall well-being of the campus community. Successfully balancing the rights and needs of all students on a college campus, with special attention to …

When thoughtfully prepared and actively adhered to, mission statements can have far-reaching effects. This article analyzes how the Mission Statement developed by the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University has enriched students' educational opportunities. This approach permeates the entire college as it influences not only students but faculty and staff as well. The implications suggest that when a college incorporates mission statements and links student development to its own stated goals, the students …

Application Of Haines And Terbrugge Chart For Suitable Slope Angles – A Case Study Of Artisanal And Small-Scale Mining, Carol Mgiba, Steven Rupprecht

Journal of Sustainable Mining

Significant hazards in Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are rock failure and slope collapse caused by overly steep pit walls, poor mine design and water pressure. There is a lack of expertise and capital in ASM. Providing a simple and cost-effective slope stability analysis and designing systems that can mitigate the risk of slope collapse is essential. This article aims to assess whether stability charts and estimations can be used to establish suitable slope angles to mitigate the overwhelming cases of slope collapse in ASM. The Bieniawski’s Rock Mass Rating system and Heins and Terbrugge stability chart were used to …

Assessing Impacts Of A Hybrid Orientation On Counseling Students’ Self-Efficacy, Candice R. Clark, Arien K. Muzacz, April Lague

Journal of Technology in Counselor Education and Supervision

This manuscript presents results from a quantitative exploratory study of how a faculty-led hybrid orientation impacted the self-efficacy and readiness to engage in hybrid learning of incoming master’s students in a nationally-accredited counseling program in the U.S. Median difference analyses did not indicate that participants’ post-orientation scores differed significantly on the measures used to assess self-efficacy (i.e., CSES, PEU, LMSE). While participants’ self-efficacy ratings did not change significantly as a result of orientation activities, scores for 89% of participants increased or stayed the same. Implications for future research and for the preparation of graduate students in pre-professional programs with a …

A Qualitative Evaluation Of Exercise Habits And Stress Management Strategies Among Exercise Physiology Freshmen, Lori A. Sherlock, E J. Ryan, Miriam E. Leary

Educational Practices in Kinesiology

Transitional phases of life (i.e., the passage from high school to college) can promote heightened stress levels resulting in physical and mental challenges. College students are at an elevated risk for common mental health disorders with 20-45% of all college students being impacted within a given year. This may be, in part, due to their exposure to a multitude of new stressors related to academics, social challenges, personal concerns, and economic issues. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to examine exercise habits and stress management strategies among incoming freshmen in an exercise physiology program. The overall goal of …

Student Engagement In The Asynchronous Learning Model: A Qualitative Study Of K-5 Arkansas Public School Caregiver Perspectives, Angela Maize Sep 2024

Student Engagement In The Asynchronous Learning Model: A Qualitative Study Of K-5 Arkansas Public School Caregiver Perspectives, Angela Maize

Student Theses and Dissertations

In 2019, a coronavirus strand, SARS-CoV-2, caused a global pandemic of respiratory illness, also referred to as the coronavirus (Covid-19). The U.S. government implemented massive school closures as a non-pharmaceutical intervention to mitigate the spread of the virus. The abrupt pivot to the asynchronous learning model resulted in low levels of engagement for many students. As a result of the pivot, students were expected to return to onsite instruction with a fraction of the learning gains, compared to a pre-pandemic school year. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore caregiver perspectives of the level of engagement exhibited …

Student Theses and Dissertations

Multispectral imagery collected through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) holds promise for optimizing crop production to meet the rising market demands. This study aimed to enhance the main two facets behind the UAV data pipeline: data collection and data analysis. Chapter II addresses data collection challenges by presenting a software tool designed to assist UAV operators in validating and identifying potential errors in the collected images. Through beta testing, the software effectively reduced operational costs and laid a solid foundation for subsequent data analysis. Chapter III delves into the data analysis facet to develop advanced modeling approaches for accurate and robust …

Montane Molluscs: Factors Affecting Snails And Their Trematodes Throughout The Mountain Regions Of Arkansas, Taylor Michelle Fiedor Sep 2024

Montane Molluscs: Factors Affecting Snails And Their Trematodes Throughout The Mountain Regions Of Arkansas, Taylor Michelle Fiedor

Student Theses and Dissertations

Spatial processes across both broad and fine scales are important for understanding ecosystem function. Broad-scale spatial processes can be defined as elevational, latitudinal, or longitudinal processes whereas fine-scale spatial processes represent movement and dispersal among habitat patches. Historically, studies on freshwater snail distributions have focused on fine-scale processes with secondary consideration given to spatial sampling. Species inventories for freshwater snails are outdated because historically snail species descriptions were based on shell morphology, which is highly plastic. In Arkansas, it is estimated that there are 36 freshwater snail species, but this estimate does not account for shell plasticity and does not …
