Clinical-Transcriptional Prioritization Of The Circulating Proteome In Human Heart Failure, Andrew S Perry, Junedh Amrute, Kory J Lavine, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Given expanding studies in epidemiology and disease-oriented human studies offering hundreds of associations between the human "ome" and disease, prioritizing molecules relevant to disease mechanisms among this growing breadth is important. Here, we link the circulating proteome to human heart failure (HF) propensity (via echocardiographic phenotyping and clinical outcomes) across the lifespan, demonstrating key pathways of fibrosis, inflammation, metabolism, and hypertrophy. We observe a broad array of genes encoding proteins linked to HF phenotypes and outcomes in clinical populations dynamically expressed at a transcriptional level in human myocardium during HF and cardiac recovery (several in a cell-specific fashion). Many identified …

As we face multiple environmental crises (e.g. climate change, nutrient pollution, freshwater scarcity), there is often a disconnect between an entity’s activities and the pollution resulting from that activity. Footprint tools help address this disconnect. They are effective in educating people, institutions and communities on how their resource use results in environmental pollution and what we can do to moderate that pollution. These tools connect an entity’s activities with the associated pollution. Footprint tools are also constantly evolving. As we better understand how to best estimate emissions—especially from sources further removed like those from the supply chain—the guidance and methods …

Flowing Forward: Impacting Health In Tanzania Through Clean Water And Sanitation, Krista A. White, Diane K. Daddario, Lisa K. Morris, Blaise B. Nieve, Sandra Rye, Anna Taber
Global Advocacy
Background: Approximately 70% of the Tanzanian population lives in rural areas, and nearly 50% lack access to clean water.1,2 The lack of clean water impacts health, education, time management, and food security.2,3 The task of carrying water typically falls to women and girls. Time spent gathering water takes girls away from school, thus diminishing their access to education and increasing gender inequality.3 Aims: Implementation of the global advocacy action plan would: (1) provide access to clean water within a 10-minute walk from home; (2) ensure young girls have access to education without barriers to gathering water; and (3) improve health …

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneous biology of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), as well as the variable outcomes, in the setting of numerous treatment options have led to prognostic uncertainty. Consequently, making treatment decisions is challenging and necessitates involved communication between patient and provider about the risks and benefits. We developed and investigated an interactive decision support tool (DST) designed to improve communication of treatment options and related long-term risks for individuals diagnosed with DCIS.
FINDINGS: The DST was developed for use by individuals aged > 40 years with DCIS and is based on a disease simulation model that integrates empirical data and …
Teacher Challenges For Implementing Response To Intervention Using Distance Learning, Krystiana Bonheur
Teacher Challenges For Implementing Response To Intervention Using Distance Learning, Krystiana Bonheur
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 resulted in widespread school closures, leading to a rapid transition from traditional face-to-face instruction to distance learning. Educators who used this traditionally face-to-face multi-tiered instructional framework to provide services to students with disabilities faced obstacles with implementation due to the transition to distance learning. This qualitative, phenomenological approach study explored the challenges and strategies of implementing Response to Intervention during the COVID-19 epidemic. Using the theoretical framework of social learning theory and the situated cognition theory, this research explored the implementation of RTI during the COVID-19 school closures from the perspective of new and …

Background: Applying graph convolutional networks (GCN) to the classification of free-form natural language texts leveraged by graph-of-words features (TextGCN) was studied and confirmed to be an effective means of describing complex natural language texts. However, the text classification models based on the TextGCN possess weaknesses in terms of memory consumption and model dissemination and distribution. In this paper, we present a fast message passing network (FastMPN), implementing a GCN with message passing architecture that provides versatility and flexibility by allowing trainable node embedding and edge weights, helping the GCN model find the better solution. We applied the FastMPN model to …
What About Us? A Quantitative Analysis Of Microaggressions In Community Colleges, Marcelo Angulo
What About Us? A Quantitative Analysis Of Microaggressions In Community Colleges, Marcelo Angulo
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Microaggressions have been studied in higher-education institutions, professional work environments, and ordinary life. However, most research studies on microaggressions in higher education focus on the experiences of college students at four-year institutions, exposing a gap in the literature on microaggressions in two-year community colleges. Research has shown that community college students’ collegiate experiences differ from those of students at more “traditional” college settings, based on factors such as cost of attendance, flexibility, and campus life. The increasing diversity of student demographics in community colleges suggests a greater likelihood for microaggressions to arise within these institutions. Thus, a quantitative approach was …

Economic Development, Undernutrition And Diabetes, Kaivan Munshi, Swapnil Singh, Nancy Luke, Anu Mary Oommen
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This research connects two seemingly unrelated facts that have recently been documented in developing countries, with important consequences for global health: (i) the weak association between nutritional status and income, and (ii) the elevated risk of diabetes among normalweight individuals. The model that we develop to reconcile these facts is based on a set point for body size that is adapted to (low) pre-modern food supply, but subsequently fails to adjust to rapid economic change. During the process of development, some individuals thus remain at their low-BMI set point, despite the increase in their income (food consumption), while others who …

Background: Prior research predominantly examined the association between HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) or those using injection drugs and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, limited attention has been given to understanding the association among HIV-negative MSM who do not inject drugs. This gap leaves apportion of the population unexamined, potentially overlooking important factor that may contribute to the transmission and prevalence of HCV. This study aims to investigate the relationship between non-injection drug use and HCV infection in this population.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data on 118 MSM who reported use of non-injection …
The Lived Experiences Of Developing A Strong Black Woman Schema For Resilient Black Women With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Lindsey Erin Dickson
The Lived Experiences Of Developing A Strong Black Woman Schema For Resilient Black Women With Adverse Childhood Experiences, Lindsey Erin Dickson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) encompass a spectrum of adversities that can impact mental and physical health in adulthood, particularly in Black women. Although there was a substantial body of research on the consequences of ACEs and the coping strategies employed by Black women, there remained a gap in understanding the nuanced experiences of those who develop a Strong Black Woman (SBW) schema. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of developing an SBW schema among resilient Black women who had faced ACEs. The research was grounded in resilience theory and SBW schema and provided …

Mexican Americans are disproportionally affected by metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), which often co-occurs with diabetes. Despite extensive evidence on the causative role of the gut microbiome in MASLD, studies determining the involvement of the gut phageome are scarce. In this cross-sectional study, we characterized the gut phageome in Mexican Americans of South Texas by stool shotgun metagenomic sequencing of 340 subjects, concurrently screened for liver steatosis by transient elastography. Inter-individual variations in the phageome were associated with gender, country of birth, diabetes, and liver steatosis. The phage signatures for diabetes and liver steatosis were subsequently determined. Enrichment of …

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) prevalence is increasing annually and affects over a third of US adults. MASLD can progress to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), characterized by severe hepatocyte injury, inflammation, and eventual advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. MASH is predicted to become the primary cause of liver transplant by 2030. Although the etiology of MASLD/MASH is incompletely understood, dysregulated fatty acid oxidation is implicated in disease pathogenesis. Here, we develop a method for estimating hepatic β-oxidation from the metabolism of [D

Body, Ritual, And Place: Advancing Their Chronotopic Interrelationship In Design Praxis And Pedagogy Through An Exploration Of Juxtaposed Surfaces, Threshold Sites Of Dialogic Encounter, And Collage, Robert Brown, Zoe Latham
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Echoing philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin’s chronotope, an ‘intrinsic connectedness of temporal and spatial relationships,’ our work explores the interrelation of the body, ritual, and place as a chrontopic site of design and pedagogy. This exploration reaffirms architecture’s grounding in people, their inhabitation of place, and spatial form, an interrelatedness too often underexamined withinarchitectural education. First positioning ritual thematically, our discussion addresses three interrelated issues: the role of juxtaposed ritual surfaces in activating the body, ritual and place; the potential of ritual surfaces as threshold sites of dialogic encounter; and collage as a medium to investigate and communicate the interrelationship of body, …
Reflecting On Reflexivity In Realist Evaluation: A Call To Action, John Downey, Sarah Rybczynska-Bunt
Reflecting On Reflexivity In Realist Evaluation: A Call To Action, John Downey, Sarah Rybczynska-Bunt
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Realist evaluation is increasingly utilised across disciplines due to the value of identifying which mechanisms may explain how, and why, particular outcomes are generated in specific contexts. In theory, realist evaluation provides a tangible way to analyse the inherent complexity in many pressing societal challenges. Realist evaluation encourages a mixed methods approach and choosing a suite of methods that are most relevant within a specific project. Yet, navigating a plurality of methods with abstract philosophical concepts brings operational challenges such that, further methodological guidance is needed. Research processes can be opaque and although the relativist epistemology in realist evaluation is …

Mechanisms Of Uropathogenic E. Coli Reservoir Formation In The Gastrointestinal Tract, Philippe Nimma Azimzadeh
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Urinary tract infections (UTI) are an extremely common affliction affecting 150 million people worldwide each year. UTIs are a leading cause of antibiotic therapy among otherwise healthy adult women, accounting for 15% of all outpatient antibiotic prescriptions. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) cause over 80% of community-acquired UTIs. Even when infection is cleared from the urine by clinical antibiotic regimens, 27% of women will experience recurrent UTI (rUTI) within months. Greater than 60% of rUTIs are caused by the same strain of E. coli that caused the initial infection, suggesting that one or more host-associated reservoirs of UPEC can re-inoculate the …
