Screening For Depression Post Acute Coronary Syndrome, Alyssa Graham
Screening For Depression Post Acute Coronary Syndrome, Alyssa Graham
Dissertations
Background: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and depression have profound impacts on patient outcomes. Patients who experience ACS are at increased risk of developing depression, which is associated with an increased risk of death and recurrent cardiac events. The evidence following ACS events promotes routine depression screening. The purpose of this project was to identify early depression in patients 65-99 years of age who had a recent diagnosis of ACS during their hospitalization.
Methods: This quality improvement (QI) project was a prospective descriptive observational design implementing a depression screening protocol to evaluate post-ACS referrals within 7-14 days of screening from February …

Empowering Women In Pakistan's Agriculture: Rethinking Sharecropping, Education, And Rural Dynamics, Sahibzada Muhammad Hamza, Nasim Shah Shirazi
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Islamic Economics
This study examines the impact of sharecropping agricultural structures on women'sempowerment in Pakistan, utilizing data from the Pakistan Social and Living Standard Survey (PSLM)across three-time cohorts: 2010-2011, 2014-2015, and 2019-2020. Employing a comprehensiveempirical model and the Heckman two-step approach to address potential sample selection bias, weanalyze a sample of 315,835 respondents. Contrary to initial expectations, our findings reveal thatparticipation in sharecropping does not have a statistically significant impact on women's empowerment,as measured by female employment. However, the study identifies several other crucial determinants ofempowerment. Education consistently demonstrates a positive and significant relationship withempowerment, reinforcing its vital role in enhancing women's …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study explores the dynamic relationship between COVID-19 transmission and transportation mobility, with an emphasis on understanding the time-varying bidirectional interplay across the different phases of the pandemic. To gain insight into this relationship, we analyzed county-level data on transmission and mobility patterns from the United States over a 74-week period using a comprehensive list of factors including: temporal factors, socio-demographics, health indicators, health care infrastructure attributes, and spatial factors. For our analysis, we proposed a simultaneous econometric model system that explicitly accounts for the bidirectional relationship between COVID-19 transmission and mobility patterns while also accounting for the influence of …

Synovial Fluid Cutibacterium Acnes Antigen Is Detected Among Shoulder Samples With High Inflammation And Early Culture Growth, Krista Toler, Pearl Paranjape, Alex Mclaren, Thomas Jefferson University
Rothman Institute Papers
Background: An emerging paradigm suggests that positive Cutibacterium acnes shoulder cultures can result from either true infection or contamination, with true infections demonstrating a host inflammatory response and early culture growth. This clinical retrospective study examines the relationship between C. acnes antigen, C. acnes culture results, and inflammation.
Methods: From January 2021 to July 2023, 1,365 periprosthetic synovial fluid samples from 347 institutions were tested for shoulder infection at a centralized clinical laboratory. A biomarker scoring system based on the 2018 International Consensus Meeting (ICM) definition was utilized to assign each sample an inflammation score. Associations between inflammation, culture results, …

Prosecuting Politicians, Shai Dothan
Prosecuting Politicians, Shai Dothan
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
The laws of many countries grant politicians special protection from prosecution before national courts. The content of such laws is usually regulated by a compromise between two conflicting goals: On the one hand, the principle that everyone is equal before the law should be upheld. On the other hand, because politicians cannot fully dedicate themselves to their office when they are subject to legal proceedings, they should be protected more than regular citizens. What many seem to take for granted is that a trial of a senior politician, such as a prime minister or a president, does bad things to …
The Legal Realists On Political Economy, Dan Priel
The Legal Realists On Political Economy, Dan Priel
Articles & Book Chapters
Alongside the well-known jurisprudential ideas associated with legal realism, some scholars have highlighted the realists’ political-economic ideas. Best known among them has been Morton Horwitz, who has argued that the realists launched an “attack on the legitimacy of the market.” Other scholars challenged this view and argued that there was no significant connection between legal realism and political economic ideas. I offer a corrective to both views. I first consider the work of five legal realists (Karl Llewellyn, Adolf Berle, William O. Douglas, Jerome Frank, and Thurman Arnold) and show that all held views that were well within the political-economic …

Making choices about whether and when to engage cognitive effort are a common feature of everyday experience, with important consequences for academic, career, and health outcomes. Yet, despite their hypothesized importance, very little is understood about the underlying mechanisms that support this form of human cost-benefit decision-making. To investigate these mechanisms, we used the Cognitive Effort Discounting Paradigm (Cog-ED) during fMRI scanning to precisely quantify the neural encoding of varying cognitive effort demands relative to reward outcomes, within two distinct cognitive domains (working memory, speech comprehension). The findings provide strong evidence that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) plays a …

BACKGROUND: Although surveys and apps are available for women to report urination and bladder symptoms, they do not include their decisions regarding toileting. Real-world factors can interfere with toileting decisions, which may then influence bladder health. This premise lacks data per want of a robust data collection tool.
OBJECTIVE: The Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (PLUS) research consortium engaged a transdisciplinary team to build and test WhereIGo, a mobile data collection app for Android and iOS. The design goal was a comprehensive reporting system for capturing environmental, sociocultural, and physical factors that influence women's decisions for toileting. Aims include …

Exploring The Influence Of Psychiatric Discourse On Belongingness: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michelle Goodwin
Exploring The Influence Of Psychiatric Discourse On Belongingness: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michelle Goodwin
Counseling and Psychology Dissertations
This dissertation critically examines the role of psychiatric discourse in shaping the sense of belonging among individuals labeled as mentally ill. Using Critical Discourse Analysis and drawing on Foucault’s theories of power and knowledge alongside Patricia Hill Collins' matrix of domination, this study explores how psychiatric discourse—rooted in supremacy ideologies—perpetuates social exclusion and internalized oppression. Through qualitative interviews, the research highlights how fear, judgment, and narratives of individual responsibility embedded in psychiatric frameworks erode self-worth and agency, fostering internalized blame and social disconnection. Participants described feeling viewed as burdens and powerless, with these dynamics reinforcing exclusionary identities. The findings advocate …
The Effectiveness Of An Anxiety Intervention On Decreasing State And Trait Anxiety Among University Students, Lea D. Hart
The Effectiveness Of An Anxiety Intervention On Decreasing State And Trait Anxiety Among University Students, Lea D. Hart
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Anxiety is the most common rising public health concern for college students (Center for Collegiate Mental Health, 2023; Haikalis et al., 2022). In 2022–2023, 65% of college students seeking counseling noted anxiety as their primary concern, rising 10% in the last 10 years (Center for Collegiate Mental Health, 2023). As a result, higher education institutions are seeking proactive solutions that are efficacious, evidence-based, and proactive for non-clinical university populations to reduce rising rates of anxiety. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore if a population-based intervention could reduce state and trait anxiety immediately and over time. The results …

Emerging evidence implicates common genetic variation - aggregated into polygenic scores (PGS) - in the onset and phenotypic presentation of rare diseases. Here, we comprehensively map individual polygenic liability for 1102 open-source PGS in a cohort of 3059 probands enrolled in the Genomic Answers for Kids (GA4K) rare disease study, revealing widespread associations between rare disease phenotypes and PGSs for common complex diseases and traits, blood protein levels, and brain and other organ morphological measurements. Using this resource, we demonstrate increased polygenic liability in probands with an inherited candidate disease variant (VUS) compared to unaffected carrier parents. Further, we show …

Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter
Nanofiber-Hydrogel Composite Scaffold Fabrication Methods For Peripheral Nerve Regeneration, Jacob Lee Carter
Theses and Dissertations
Nerve graft conduits (NGCs) are a rapidly advancing field for treating peripheral nerve injuries that aim to guide the growth of regenerating axons across damaged gaps. A more effective NGC can be manufactured by combining the use of nanofibers to act as guidewires within a 3-D hydrogel that imitates the extracellular matrix of nerve tissue. Several methods have been developed to embed aligned nanofibers in an ordered architecture within a hydrogel matrix. The first method involves layer-by-layer additive manufacturing to create NGCs with rows of polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers surrounded by a gelatin methacrylate (GelMe) hydrogel in a 3-D structure. A …

Aging Drives Cd8 T Cells To Functional Extremes: From Non-Specific Cytotoxicity To Tissue-Mediated Exhaustion, Irina Shchukina
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
CD8 T cells are a crucial component of the immune system, primarily responsible for executing the effector response against viral infections and cancer. Aging significantly impacts most immune cell types, with particularly dramatic changes observed in CD8 T cells. One major age-related difference is the marked decline in thymus activity, which leads to a substantial reduction in naive CD8 T cells and an increased abundance of memory CD8 T cells. Furthermore, recent work from our lab demonstrated that while young memory CD8 T cells are relatively homogeneous, memory CD8 T cells diverge into two subpopulations: PD1- memory CD8 T cells …

Articulating Poland in colonial terms in German literature and visual media in the 19th century laid the groundwork for the long-standing framing of the relationship between Germany and its neighbor, the colonizer and the colonized, until today, especially in German popular culture. My contribution explores the reection of the anxieties in German popular culture by analyzing the images of Polish migrant women in feature lms and series made for German television in the 2010s, in the first years after the opening of the German job market. I focus on the representations of the work of female migrants from Poland who …
