Large-scale gene-environment interaction (GxE) discovery efforts often involve analytical compromises for the sake of data harmonization and statistical power. Refinement of exposures, covariates, outcomes, and population subsets may be helpful to establish often-elusive replication and evaluate potential clinical utility. Here, we used additional datasets, an expanded set of statistical models, and interrogation of lipoprotein metabolism via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based lipoprotein subfractions to refine a previously discovered GxE modifying the relationship between physical activity (PA) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C). We explored this GxE in the Women’s Genome Health Study (WGHS; N=23,294; the strongest cohort-specific signal in the original meta-analysis), the UK …
Engaging Student Nurses In Lifestyle Management: The Role Of Technology-Based Interventions And Mobile Health Applications, Daniela Austin
Engaging Student Nurses In Lifestyle Management: The Role Of Technology-Based Interventions And Mobile Health Applications, Daniela Austin
School of Psychology Theses
Despite their knowledge of health risks and their future role as health promoters, pre-registered nursing students frequently struggle with unhealthy behaviours, including high rates of overweight and obesity. This thesis investigated these challenges in a student nurse population in the South West of England, exploring lifestyle patterns, perceived barriers and motivators, and the potential of mobile health (mHealth) interventions to support behaviour change.Using a multi-method approach across four studies, the research examined students’ current health behaviours, attitudes towards digital tools, and the feasibility and acceptability of theory-driven interventions. The first study, a cross-sectional survey, assessed diet, physical activity, and attitudes …
Exploring The Mechanisms Of Functional Imagery Training For Sleep Problems: A Single Arm Pilot Study, Ross Allen, Jackie Andrade
Exploring The Mechanisms Of Functional Imagery Training For Sleep Problems: A Single Arm Pilot Study, Ross Allen, Jackie Andrade
School of Psychology Theses
Functional Imagery Training (FIT) is a brief motivational intervention grounded in the Elaborated Intrusion theory of desire. It helps individuals use personalised, emotionally vivid mental imagery to support goal pursuit by drawing on past successes to plan actions, overcome obstacles, and rehearse behavioural strategies. Delivered in the client-centred style of Motivational Interviewing (MI), FIT aims to strengthen motivation for sustained behaviour change. While FIT has shown promise in areas such as weight loss and anxiety, its application to sleep-related behaviour change remains unexplored. This single-arm pilot study examined whether FIT is associated with improvements in sleep quality and motivation to …

Refugees often experience trauma from war, displacement, and post-migration stressors, leading to collective and transgenerational trauma. This study explored the impact of embedding trauma-informed principles (TIP) within a refugee befriending programme, where refugees were paired with local volunteers. Ethnographic Action informed research was used through completing interviews, observations, and a focus group. Participants included five befrienders and seven refugees, alongside observational data. Thematic and framework analyses identified five key themes: The Relationship, Safety for Befrienders, Inclusivity, Supporting Befriendees with Integration, and Challenges of Befriending. TIP enhanced understanding of how community-based, trauma-informed interventions can support refugee recovery and resilience. The study …
Laugh, I Nearly Cried: A Qualitative, Reflexive Thematic Analysis Of The Impact Of Humour In Psychotherapy From Client And Therapist Perspectives, Elina Broholm
School of Psychology Theses
Humour in psychotherapy is commonly occurring, yet seldom discussed as a resource in the training and education of therapists, nor considered from the perspective of clients in therapy. This qualitative study explored how clients and therapists perceive the impact of humour in psychotherapy on the therapeutic alliance, experience, and process. 12 clients and eight therapists contributed their perspectives on humour’s impact on the therapeutic experience, considering both its helpful and unhelpful contributions. Not all humour is equal, and special consideration was given to how different humour styles may impact psychotherapy. Reflexive thematic analysis from 20 semi-structured interviews suggested that humour …

Interview data was analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis.FindingsAnalysis generated five main themes which were interpreted to summarise the caring experience of these parents: Lifechanging, Emotional, Responsibility, Abandoned, Future. There were many experiences which were shared by participants, though various factors can impact these realities.ConclusionThis research concludes that parenting a …
Exploring The Relationship Between Attachment State Of Mind, Emotional Development And Distress In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities – A Pilot Study, Amy Pantridge
School of Psychology Theses
BackgroundAttachment theory and emotional development are increasingly considered important for understanding distress in people with intellectual disabilities, yet no prior studies have empirically explored relationships between these constructs.MethodAdults with intellectual disabilities and informants were recruited from UK community organisations. Participants completed an attachment measure (AAP), brief cognitive measure, and questionnaire on perceived emotional support. Informants completed a distress measure (HoNOS-LD), emotional development measure (SED-S), and provided feedback on the SED-S. ResultsNo significant relationship was found between attachment and emotional development, though some specific associations emerged. Unresolved attachment was common. Discrepancies were observed between informant-reported and participant-reported data. Informants found elements …
Optimizing Ethephon Application Timing For ‘Meyer’ Zoysiagrass Seedhead Suppression, Brandon C. Mcnally
Optimizing Ethephon Application Timing For ‘Meyer’ Zoysiagrass Seedhead Suppression, Brandon C. Mcnally
Horticulture Faculty Publications and Presentations
Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp. Willd.) is a desirable, low-input turfgrass species used on golf courses. However, prolific zoysiagrass seedhead production in the spring can increase golf course maintenance costs and reduce aesthetics. Previous research demonstrates that a single autumn ethephon application can suppress zoysiagrass seedhead production the following spring, but the optimum application timing is not well-defined. The objective of this research was to determine the optimum window for an effective ethephon application for ‘Meyer’ zoysiagrass seedhead suppression. Small-plot field research was conducted in Indiana, Kansas, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Seedheads were suppressed up to 99% depending on application timing. In …

Knowledge-Sharing Behaviour Within A Non-Profit Organisation: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Paul Mcmanus, Serge Basini, Aidan O'Driscoll
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Despite their heterogeneous compositions, non-profit organisations (NPO) are inherently knowledge-centric, necessitating continued exploration into the influential constructs that shape knowledge-sharing (KS) behaviour among employees. This study offers an in-depth examination of KS behaviour within a community-based service provider in Dublin, Ireland. Using a novel approach to Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), data collection consisted of seventeen semi-structured interviews across multiple locations. Findings show that four overarching themes explain how and why knowledge is shared in this organisational context. The four themes developed through rigorous RTA offer the organisation a greater understanding of its employees’ KS behaviours. Practical recommendations are provided to …

Current Understanding And Theories Of Wellbeing Washing In The Context Of Workplace Health And Wellbeing: A Scoping Review Protocol, Éadaoin Ryan, Niamh Imbusch, Mary Kinahan, Róisín Guilfoyle
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
Workplace health and wellbeing practitioners have recently voiced concerns regarding the emerging concept of wellbeing washing (WW). While practitioner literature extensively discusses this concept, research supporting the examination of it and offering solutions is lacking. This scoping review protocol outlines a means of comprehensively investigating and mapping the mainly practitioner-authored literature on WW, to support the establishment of a working definition and deeper understanding of this concept, which will inform future research. A search strategy will be employed to map information from diverse practitioner literature sources. Guided by the JBI Scoping Review Framework, two reviewers will use predefined criteria to …

Evolving Reflexive Thematic Analysis In Knowledge Management Research, Paul Mcmanus, Serge Basini, Aidan O'Driscoll
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This paper presents a novel approach to the coding practices of Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA). The paper offers a working sample from a study exploring Knowledge-sharing (KS) intentions and behaviours of employees within a non-profit organisation. It is claimed that foundational coding practices inform analysts about the creation of reflexive codes. Referred to as 'the coding family', these methodological practices provide a set of conceptual tools that underscore the iterative and dynamic nature of qualitative data analysis. All of which culminate in theme generation. The paper focuses on the iterative and flexible approach that leads to the development of themes. …

BACKGROUND: Rapid identification of individuals with acute respiratory infections is crucial for preventing nosocomial infections. For rapid diagnosis, especially in EDs, lateral flow devices (LFDs) are a convenient, inexpensive option with a rapid turnaround. Several 'multiplex' LFDs (M-LFDs) now exist, testing for multiple pathogens from a single swab sample. We evaluated the real-world performance of M-LFD versus PCR testing in detecting influenza A, B and SARS-CoV-2) in the ED setting.
METHODS: After preliminary evaluation of an M-LFD (SureScreen) with laboratory-grown virus and PCR-negative clinical samples, it was evaluated in a real-world setting at the ED of St Thomas' Hospital (London, …

INTRODUCTION: Understanding 1-year mortality following major surgery offers valuable insights into patient outcomes and the quality of peri-operative care. Few models exist that predict 1-year mortality accurately. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for 1-year mortality in patients undergoing complex non-cardiac surgery using a novel machine-learning technique called multi-objective symbolic regression.
METHODS: A single-institution database of patients undergoing major elective surgery with previous cardiopulmonary exercise testing was divided into three datasets: pre-operative clinical data; cardiorespiratory and physiological data; and combined. A multi-objective symbolic regression model was developed and compared against existing models. Model performance was evaluated using the …

Background: The cluster randomised trial (CRT) design is increasingly used to evaluate the impact of school-based interventions for improving social-emotional functioning outcomes in pupils. Good knowledge is required on plausible values of the intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC) of the outcome to calculate the required sample size in such studies. Using data from five school-based CRTs in the UK, we estimate, and describe patterns in, ICCs for social-emotional functioning outcomes. Methods: Mixed effects linear regression models were fitted to estimate the ICC and variance components. Estimates for baseline data were obtained by fitting “null” models that had no predictor variables; estimates …

Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) is the most common liver disease worldwide; however, its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identify ethanol-mediated hemolysis and erythrophagocytosis as major contributors to ALD pathogenesis using both in vitro and in vivo models, as well as surrogate markers such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and CD163, a scavenger receptor for hemoglobin-haptoglobin complexes. A key initial observation was the direct optical evidence of serum hemolysis in heavy drinkers, which diminished after one week of alcohol withdrawal. In parallel, soluble CD163 (sCD163) levels declined during alcohol detoxification correlating with liver damage and fibrosis stages. Moreover, red …

Background and Objective: Thrombotic thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) is a rare condition following vaccination with adenovirus-vectored coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines. This retrospective analysis of England primary care data aimed to estimate TTS event rates before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and following AZD1222 (ChAdOx1-nCoV-19) vaccination. Methods: Primary care data on TTS events were collected using the Oxford-Royal College of General Practitioners Research and Surveillance Centre sentinel network. TTS events were defined as thromboembolism with coincident (± 7 days) thrombocytopenia events using Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine clinical terms (the current Brighton Collaboration definition could not be used in the study …

AbstractAdverse impacts of epilepsy (e.g., injury, depression, and Sudden Unexpected Death from Epilepsy (SUDEP) can be mitigated by factors that patients may control, such as medication adherence, improved sleep and diet, reduced alcohol and taking care around pregnancy. New guidelines state that risk should be discussed at the time of diagnosis but some clinicians express concern about not wanting to raise anxiety.ObjectiveTo explicate practices by which epilepsy expert clinicians broach discussions of risk in specialist epilepsy clinics.Methods24 recordings of initial telephone appointments at specialist clinics where epilepsy is diagnosed from two specialist outpatient epilepsy services in England were subjected to …

Introduction: Road traffic injuries constitute a significant global health burden, causing 1.3 million deaths and 50million injuries annually, with 92 % of fatalities occurring in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despitethis disproportionate impact, research priorities in post-collision care often reflect high-income country contexts, creating a critical misalignment between evidence generation and contextual realities in LMICs.Methods: This mixed-methods study employed a three-phase approach to identify research priorities for postcollision care in the Western Cape, South Africa. Phase 1 consisted of a comprehensive literature review toidentify preliminary thematic areas and research questions. Phase 2 involved a stakeholder engagement workshop using modified nominal group techniques …

‘Blue foods’ are derived from aquatic species that are caught or cultivated and are amongst the most globally traded commodities. Growing emphasis is being placed on blue foods in future transitions to sustainable food systems. However, recent international events such as the Covid-19 pandemic, UK-EU ‘Brexit’, and Russia-Ukraine war have caused renewed interest in ideological debates between globalism and localism and associated cross-scale tensions. Here, we aim to provide further insight into cross-scale tensions in blue food systems through a literature review and UK-based seafood stakeholder workshop. From our literature review, the evidence for cross-scale tensions was linked to the …

We examine the economy-wide degree of substitutability between intangible capital and other factor inputs in production using a large sample of advanced countries. In this context, we turn to studying the implications of intangible and tangible capital growth for labor income share dynamics. Compared to tangible capital, we find that intangible capital more strongly complements skilled labor. The analysis further indicates relative fungibility between tangible capital and a composite of intangible capital and skilled labor, in line with the rising prominence of knowledge-intensive tasks and AI-driven online platforms. The intrinsic nature of intangibles and their asymmetric effects across skilled and …
