A Turning Point In Cardiac Remodelling In Obesity: Obesity, Mariella R. Huaman, Carlos J. Toro-Huamanchumo
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Cardiac remodelling in obesity has received growing attention in the past two decades, particularly as the prevalence of obesity continues to rise globally. In 2013, Aurigemma and colleagues published a seminal study that provided crucial insights into the structural changes in the heart associated with obesity. This study summarized advances in understanding how the disproportionate growth of adipose tissue affects cardiac function, and challenged and reshaped previously established paradigms. Before the publication of this report, the standard paradigm held that obesity-induced haemodynamic stress primarily drove eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy. However, this study instead demonstrated that in individuals with obesity, concentric …

Igg N-Glycosylation Contributes To Different Severities Of Insulin Resistance: Implications For 3p Medical Approaches, Xiaohong Chen, Lois Balmer, Kun Lin, Weijie Cao, Ziyu Huang, Xiang Chen, Manshu Song, Yongsong Chen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Reliable biomarkers capturing immunometabolic processes in insulin resistance (IR) remain limited. IgG N-glycosylation modulates immune responses and reflects metabolic disorders, yet its role in IR remains unclear. This study investigated its potential for early detection, risk stratification, and targeted prevention within the framework of predictive, preventive, and personalised medicine (PPPM/3PM). Methods: A total of 313 participants were categorized into three groups based on the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR): insulin-sensitive (HOMA-IR < 2.69 without diabetes, n = 75), mild IR (HOMA-IR ≥ 2.69 without diabetes, n = 155), and severe IR (HOMA-IR ≥ 2.69 with type 2 diabetes, n = 83). Canonical correlation analysis was conducted to explore the overall relationship between IgG N-glycosylation and IR-related inflammation, indicated by tumour necrosis factor-α, interleukin- 6, C-reactive protein, and adiponectin. Mediation analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of IgG N-glycans on IR. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess the association between IgG N-glycans and IR severity, with discriminative power evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: Pro-inflammatory IgG N-glycoforms, characterized by reduced sialylation and galactosylation, along with increased bisecting N-acetylglucosamine, were observed as IR severity increased. IgG N-glycosylation significantly correlated with inflammatory markers in the insulin-sensitive (r = 0.599, p < 0.05), mild (r = 0.461, p < 0.05), and severe (r = 0.666, p < 0.01) IR groups. IgG N-glycosylation significantly influenced IR (β = 0.406) partially via modulation of inflammation. Increased glycoforms FA2[6]G1 (OR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.78–0.96) and A2G2S2 (OR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.82–0.94) were associated with a lower IR risk, with respective area under the curves (AUCs) of 0.752, 0.683, and 0.764 for the insulin sensitive, mild, and severe IR groups. Conclusions: IgG N-glycosylation contributes to IR by modulating inflammatory responses. Glycoforms FA2[6]G1 and A2G2S2 emerge as protective biomarkers, offering potential for predicting and preventing IR through primary prevention strategies within the PPPM framework.

Background: Perinatal depression and anxiety significantly impact maternal and infant health, potentially leading to severe outcomes like preterm birth and suicide. Aboriginal women, despite their resilience, face elevated risks due to the long-term effects of colonization and cultural disruption. The Baby Coming You Ready (BCYR) model of care, centered on a digitized, holistic, strengths-based assessment, was co-designed to address these challenges. The successful BCYR pilot demonstrated its ability to replace traditional risk-based screens. However, some health professionals still overrely on psychological risk scores, often overlooking the contextual circumstances of Aboriginal mothers, their cultural strengths, and mitigating protective factors. This highlights …

Psychosocial Workplace Hazards And Industrial Relations: An Introduction, Alexis Vassiley, Tom Barratt, Kantha Dayaram, John Burgess
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This article introduces the special issue, bringing together research on psychosocial workplace hazards (PSWH) which engages industrial relations (IR) perspectives. This is important as PSWH are increasingly studied and regulated, with new regulatory frameworks creating opportunity and necessity for IR perspectives to engage with PSWH. These hazards are intimately related to power relations between employers, workers and the broader society within which they interact, a topic of longstanding investigation within IR. To date, PSWH research has largely occurred in the work, health and safety (WHS) field, reflecting a broader historical separation between WHS and IR in scholarship and practice. While …

Anticodon-Edited Trna Enables Translational Readthrough Of Col4a5 Premature Termination Codons, Kohei Omachi, Joseph J. Porter, John D. Lueck, Jeffrey H. Miner
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Alport syndrome is caused by variants in COL4A3, COL4A4, or COL4A5, which encode the α3α4α5 chains of type IV collagen. These variants result in defects in the glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and impaired kidney function. Nonsense variants result in truncated proteins lacking the NC1 domain, thereby preventing proper GBM assembly and function and causing the most severe forms of the disease. Restoring full-length protein expression represents a potential therapeutic strategy for Alport syndrome and related disorders. Anticodon-edited transfer RNAs (ACE-tRNAs), which promote premature termination codon (PTC) readthrough, have shown promise in diseases such as cystic fibrosis, but their application in …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Ability has been positioned as a crucial concept in the construction of a subject that is inclusive of and meaningful for all students. Almost two decades since Evans (2004) called on the field to re-engage in discourse concerning ability, how ability is conceptualised by physical education (PE) teachers remains relatively unexplored. Furthermore, relatively little is known about how understandings of ability are enacted through curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in PE. This research explored these issues with lower secondary PE teachers in Western Australia through self-recorded audio responses to two research questions. Data from 38 participants revealed the struggles that PE …

Supporting People Bereaved By Suicide In The South West Region Of Western Australia: Report, Colleen M. Carlon
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper reports on the practices of service providers in working with people and communities bereaved by suicide in regional contexts. For people bereaved by suicide experiences of grief, trauma and stigma and the questioning of why someone has died create a complex mix of need and emotion that can leave people vulnerable to complicated grief and poor physical and mental health. These effects may also be exacerbated by stigma in social and communal contexts. As such experiences of suicide grief are different to other forms of grief and loss, effectively supporting people and communities bereaved by suicide requires knowledge …

Young Children Moving Through Ecological Anxiety And Grief: Dancing With Demolition, Jane Merewether, Jo Pollitt, Mindy Blaise
Young Children Moving Through Ecological Anxiety And Grief: Dancing With Demolition, Jane Merewether, Jo Pollitt, Mindy Blaise
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
As the extent of planetary unraveling becomes increasingly apparent, scholars are beginning to document responses to the loss of ecological systems, mass extinctions, and climate change. However, there are few studies documenting children’s eco-anxiety responses. In this study, children’s eco-anxiety and grief became apparent when they expressed dismay at the imminent demolition of a derelict building. Children were concerned for the fate of the building, the land on which it stood, and the myriad others it sheltered. Using participatory and creative methodologies including dance, this project worked with children to tell a more-than-human story of becoming-with children-building-weeds-graffiti-dust-researchers-unhoused-bacteria-rats-and unloved others, which …

Practices And Perceptions In Hamstring Training For Injury Risk Mitigation: A Survey-Based Mixed-Methods Analysis, Steven Ross, Nicholas J. Ripley, John J. Mcmahon, Paul Comfort
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
In this study, the practices and perceptions of sport and exercise practitioners regarding hamstring training for injury risk mitigation were investigated. Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) remain a prevalent issue across sports, despite extensive research. An anonymous survey was conducted to assess how practitioners integrate evidence-based strategies, such as the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) and high-speed running (HSR), into their training programmes. The survey included both fixed-response and open-ended questions, enabling a mixed-methods analysis of training approaches. A total of 47 practitioners responded, revealing that most incorporate the NHE and HSR into both in-season and off-season training. However, there were notable …
Rapid Weight Loss Across Combat Sports And The Relationships Between Methods And Magnitude, Oliver R. Barley, Craig A. Harms
Rapid Weight Loss Across Combat Sports And The Relationships Between Methods And Magnitude, Oliver R. Barley, Craig A. Harms
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This study examined rapid weight loss (RWL) habits across combat sports (CS) and how common usage of different methods was related to the magnitude of RWL. Competitors (N = 256) from CS including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, muay thai/kickboxing (MT/KB), wrestling, mixed martial arts (MMA), judo, taekwondo, and karate participated in the study. Athletes completed an online survey which included questions on their regular weight loss habits, including magnitudes of weight loss over different time periods and types of methods utilised. Athletes typically started losing weight in their early 20s and engaged in RWL on average three times a year. Magnitudes …
School Infrastructure Procurement By Public–Private Partnership: In The Public Interest?, Leon Benade
School Infrastructure Procurement By Public–Private Partnership: In The Public Interest?, Leon Benade
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The use of Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs) in the education sector to construct and maintain schools’ infrastructure is under-researched by Educational Studies specialists. This article presents an assay of the use of PPP to procure school facilities, notably in developed contexts, where PPP arrangements are typically a product of the neoliberal privatisation of education. PPP arrangements allow governments to contract private sector partners to finance, design and construct school facilities infrastructure in exchange for state payments. The evaluation is complemented by a critical analysis of the WA Schools Public Private Partnership Project and three published Australian-based case studies. This sets the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Inadequacies in the conduct and quality of research are well established across many research domains, including sport science and medicine. Metaresearch—the practice of performing research on research—is presented as a practical vehicle for improving research quality through evaluating the research processes. This article introduces the concept of metaresearch to sport as a new sub-field of sport science. The broad types of metaresearch are introduced, with a mapping of current sports metaresearch activity across these areas. Interdisciplinary centres aimed at improving scientific quality across other fields are also introduced to sport, and specific considerations for beginning metaresearch are provided for sport. …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Immune-checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy elicits durable responses in a subset of patients with advanced melanoma. However, the appropriate timing for treatment cessation remains an unresolved issue. Moreover, some patients are required to discontinue therapy due to the occurrence of severe adverse events. Upon treatment cessation, a subset of patients maintains a durable response, while some patients relapse and require rechallenge with ICI. Criteria for a safe stop of ICI have not been established. Objectives: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the durability of response in melanoma patients who discontinued ICI therapy. Furthermore, the outcome …
