Optimizing Defibrillation Response: A Quality Improvement Initiative In The Cath Lab, Sara Cullis Bsn, Rn

Nursing Publications, Posters, & Presentations

This poster was presented at the 2025 Parkview Nursing Research Symposium.

Patients undergoing diagnostic or emergent procedures in the Cardiac Cath Lab are at risk of developing lethal arrhythmias, which require immediate defibrillation to prevent adverse outcomes. Currently, the use of paddles and the absence of pre-applied defibrillator pads delay response time during critical events, increasing the risk of morbidity and mortality. Additionally, there is a liability when staff assume which patients are “high risk” versus “diagnostic,” as even seemingly low-risk cases can rapidly deteriorate without warning. This quality improvement initiative aims to address this gap by ensuring defibrillator pads …

BACKGROUND: Enteral feeding intolerance, a common type of gastrointestinal dysfunction leading to underfeeding, is associated with increased mortality. Tracheal pepsin A, an indicator of microaspiration, was found in 39% of patients within 24 hours of enteral feeding. Tracheal pepsin A is a potential biomarker of enteral feeding intolerance.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of microaspiration (tracheal or oral pepsin A). It was hypothesized that variables predicting the presence of tracheal pepsin A might be similar to predictors of enteral feeding intolerance.

METHODS: In this secondary analysis, machine learning models were fit for 283 adults receiving mechanical ventilation who had tracheal and …

Cultivating Plain Language Skills For Engineering Students, Catherine Wong, Cynthia Carlson Jan 2025

Cultivating Plain Language Skills For Engineering Students, Catherine Wong, Cynthia Carlson

Faculty Publications

While engineers are learning the vocabulary of the profession, understandably, they want to practice, and perhaps show their professors that they are proficient. This leads to student writing that is overly complicated and full of jargon. This is not the type of document that would be clear to the public, or even to a professional outside of the narrowly focused field of the particular engineer. After graduation, engineers’ writing becomes exponentially more important. Often approval of projects relies on residents’ or clients’ understanding of engineers’ work. For example, an engineering firm completing an investigation of an important health concern such …

Utilizing 16s Rna Sequencing To Identify Bacterial Species Colonizing Lame Birds With Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis, Kara Hoover, Andi Asnayanti, Adnan Alrubaye

2025 Research Poster Competition

Poultry lameness has become prevalent in recent years due to high growth rates in broiler chickens. Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO), the main cause of lameness, is characterized by necrosis of the femur and tibia in afflicted birds. Heavier birds are more susceptible to bacterial stress in these regions due to increased pressure on their growth plates. BCO lameness poses both ethical and financial threats to the poultry industry, as up to 15% of flocks can become affected during outbreaks. The purpose of this experiment was to identify bacterial species present in birds with BCO lameness. 1,800 chicks were randomly …

Oyster larvae aquaculture is an important industry, both economically and environmentally, helping to create sustainable food systems by supplying seed oysters to farms, and also to restoration projects aimed at building coastal resilience and improving water quality by rejuvenating wild populations. However, oyster larvae are highly susceptible to rapid mortality events, crashes, which can seriously impact the industry. One source of these crashes in hatchery systems is vibriosis, caused by pathogenic species of Vibrio bacteria that are ubiquitous in temperate coastal waters, and with rising surface water temperatures their prevalence and virulence are increasing. To prevent these larval crashes from …
