Estimating The Gender Wage Gap: A Comparative Analysis Of Different Estimators, Xinran Zhang Jan 2025

Estimating The Gender Wage Gap: A Comparative Analysis Of Different Estimators, Xinran Zhang

Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Honors Projects

The gender wage gap between males and females has been well studied by labor economists. We take a multi-prong approach to evaluate three estimators —a regression-imputation estimator, a weighting estimator, and a doubly robust estimator—in estimating the gender wage gap. Using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we conduct an empirical study of the estimators’ performances. In a simulation study, we evaluate the properties of estimators and study whether bootstrapping is an appropriate measure of the uncertainty of each estimator. The findings show that while the estimators provide different results, the doubly robust estimator provides reliable and consistent results under …

Study Of The Relationship Between Interoceptive Sensibility And Distress Tolerance In Community And College Samples, William W. Moore, Ashley Howell Jan 2025

Study Of The Relationship Between Interoceptive Sensibility And Distress Tolerance In Community And College Samples, William W. Moore, Ashley Howell

Modern Psychological Studies

Interoceptive sensibility involves the detection, integration, and interpretation of internal bodily signals, primarily from cardiovascular, pulmonary, or gastrointestinal systems. Dysfunction in interoceptive processing has been increasingly recognized as a clinically relevant factor in numerous neurological, psychiatric, and behavioral disorders. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance, hypothesizing that individuals with heightened interoceptive sensibility may report poorer distress tolerance. This relationship could help identify patterns between interoceptive sensibility and tendencies toward maladaptive coping strategies or emotional dysregulation. To explore these relationships, two studies were conducted utilizing self-report measures of interoceptive sensibility and distress tolerance in …

Born To Be Kind: The Evolutionary Significance Of Prosocial Behaviors In Humans, Yijia Xu Jan 2025

Born To Be Kind: The Evolutionary Significance Of Prosocial Behaviors In Humans, Yijia Xu

Modern Psychological Studies

Humans prefer kind romantic partners. Worldwide surveys have identified kindness as the defining feature of an ideal long-term partner, often explained as a signal for evolutionary fitness, demonstrating the ability to provide resources and ensure survival. Instead, we propose an alternative explanation: human preference for prosociality stems from an innate desire to be treated well. To test this, we asked participants whether they preferred kindness directed towards them or kindness exhibited more generally. Results indicate that participants were significantly more attracted to people who were kind to them personally than to people who were broadly kind to others. Interestingly, participants …

Fostering Success: How Cross Campus Partnerships Can Improve Accessibility, Engagement, And Inclusion For Autistic Undergraduate Students, Mercedes Rutherford-Patten, Luna Nombrano Larsen

Library Scholarship

The academic library, with its long history of student support and social justice advocacy, is the perfect organization to lead the way in dismantling systemic barriers to student success. Research shows that college students who regularly use library services are more successful academically (Shea & Derry, 2022). Another vital support the library can provide is community. Inclusion and belonging are integral to the success of autistic college students: “feeling like part of a community” and “to always feel like I’m welcome [on-campus]” were ways students measured their own success in a study by the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (2020, p. …

Building Diversity Into The Philosophy And Methodology Of Economics With Stratification Economics, Merve Burnazoglu, John B. Davis Jan 2025

Building Diversity Into The Philosophy And Methodology Of Economics With Stratification Economics, Merve Burnazoglu, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Mainstream economics ignores who produces it and what it is about because its average man, Homo economicus ontological entry-point obscures social differences between people. Philosophy and Methodology of Economics that assumes this ontological entry point generally limits itself to epistemological analysis, and this means it fails to make diversity a fundamental concern. Taking diversity seriously entails being clear about one's ontological assumptions, and this requires being clear about the normative scope of one's analysis. This calls for giving up a value-neutral methodological reasoning and adopting a value-explicit methodological posture. To illustrate, we describe how Stratification economics with its social groups …

Correlates Of Gacha Gaming, Minh Quang Nguyen Jan 2025

Correlates Of Gacha Gaming, Minh Quang Nguyen

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between impulsive measures, income spending on gaming, and delayed discounting in a Gatha player sample. Two model approaches were employed: (1) a mediation model approach predicting delayed discounting with age and education level as mediators and (2) a multiple regression model predicting delayed discounting. Although the proposed models were exploratory, it was the contention of the author that these analyses would result in a better understanding of delayed discounting in Gacha gaming. Both age and education level were not correlated with the dependent variable (spending ratio), therefore the mediation model …

Tailwater Trout Population Dynamics, Connor Dylan Cunningham Jan 2025

Tailwater Trout Population Dynamics, Connor Dylan Cunningham

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Dams have been constructed throughout the world and provide several resources for humans (e.g., flood control, hydropower). These structures heavily alter the upstream and downstream environment. One consequence of these alterations is the creation of “tailwaters”, which can create cold-water habitat via hypolimnetic releases. In the southeast United States these tailwater environments are often managed for the recreational use of nonnative salmonids. The unnatural flow regimes of tailwaters affect the biotic and abiotic conditions and ultimately the dynamic rate functions (i.e., recruitment, growth, mortality) of the fish inhabiting them. As such, the goal of this research is to provide fisheries …

Utilizing The Spatial Evaluation Of Language And Flexibility For Youth (Self-Y) In Clinical Case Conceptualization, Katelyn Frahm Jan 2025

Utilizing The Spatial Evaluation Of Language And Flexibility For Youth (Self-Y) In Clinical Case Conceptualization, Katelyn Frahm

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience challenges with restricted and repetitive behaviors, relating directly to challenges with psychological flexibility (Hyman et al., 2020; Hayes et al., 2006). Unfortunately, the history of applied behavior analysis has extended harmful implications of treatment that have focused on compliance training and punishment, often worsening psychological flexibility (Sandoval-Norton et al., 2019). Research is calling behavior analysis to combine flexible approaches, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, with technologies exploring the intricacies of individual relational networks (Hayes et al., 1999; Hayes et al., 2022; Hayes & King, 2024). The present study introduced the …

Characterization Of The Overexpression Of Reca Homologs Rad51 And Dmc1 In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Jianna M. Cox

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

RecA homologs, Dmc1 and Rad51, work to repair DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) within the cell through the recombination of homologous sections of DNA. Dmc1 works to repair programmed DSBs through meiotic recombination, while Rad51 functions to repair both meiotic and non-meiotic DSBs, the latter repaired through the process of homologous recombination repair (HHR). Chemotherapeutics, exogenous agents, work to form DSBs in cancer cells, attempting to inhibit the cell’s growth. A hyper recombinant phenotype is often seen in cancer cells due to the overexpression of RAD51, leading to drug resistance, the persistence of cancers, and an overall poor patient outcome. …

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Introduction: Dual Antiplatelet Therapy (DAPT) plays an important role in the secondary prevention of ischemic events after treatment for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The long-term use of DAPT is associated with an increased risk of bleeding, which affects morbidity and mortality. Risk stratification scores have been developed to predict this risk and provide a balance against the risk of ischemic events. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of bleeding in a cohort of patients in Kenya on DAPT and assess the performance of the PRECISE-DAPT Score in predicting the risk of bleeding.

Methods: This was a …

The Sky’S The Limit: Improving Satellite Imagery Data Literacy To Address Noncommunicable Diseases, M. Courtney Hughes, Elizabeth J. Folkmann

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Low-and middle-income countries experience 77% of the world’s premature deaths caused by non- communicable diseases, and their underlying health determinant data are often scarce and inaccurate. Im- proving satellite imagery data literacy worldwide is an integral step toward using the vast amount of publicly available data collected via satellites, such as air pollution, green space and light at night—all determinants of non-communicable diseases. Existing machine learning–based algorithms enable automated analysis of satel- lite imagery data, but health officials and scientists must know where to find and how to apply these algorithms to measure risk and target interventions.

Faculty Publications

Data reveal that the physical effects of trauma exposure increasingly surface in business, social, and other settings. Exposure to trauma at any point in life can cause employee health concerns, yet many firms do not acknowledge or address this. Herein, we combine trauma theory with human capital theory to explain how manifestations of trauma exposure—hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction—impact employee health and performance. This article outlines how each manifestation affects human capital deployment, and thus employee performance. It further demonstrates how these human capital deployment issues have individual- and unit-level performance implications. This article offers a theory linking health effects of …
