Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema Jan 2025

Scenes From A Sabbatical: Narratives Of School Leadership, Albert Boerema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

School leadership is often described in terms of vision, strategy, and efficiency. However, the lived experiences of school leaders reveal a far more complex reality—one shaped by relationships, ethical dilemmas, and the daily challenges of guiding a school community. This paper presents insights from a sabbatical study in which the author observed and interviewed leaders at five schools—one public and four faith-based.Four aspects of leadership are illustrated in this essay: the emotionally charged moments, the tensions that arise between competing visions, the fragility of educational institutions, and the role of hospitality in leadership. These narratives illustrate how school leaders navigate conflict, …

Spending Clause Standing, Edward Webre Plaut Jan 2025

Spending Clause Standing, Edward Webre Plaut

Michigan Law Review

The Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan Act allotted almost $220 billion to state, local, and tribal governments to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. This money, the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, gave recipients wide spending discretion to address their struggling economies. But the legislation had one key limitation: Recipients could not use the money to “directly or indirectly” cut their taxes. If a recipient violated this “Offset Provision,” the Department of the Treasury might recoup the funds.

Nearly two-dozen states alleged that the Offset Provision was unduly coercive and ambiguous, violating the Spending Clause. However, with no threatened …

The Use Of Motivational Interviewing In Preventing Dental Caries Among Young Children, Denise C. Mckinney, Melissa L. Sullivan, Futun Alkhalifah

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Dental caries is a complex, preventable disease that remains a global health burden. The burden of this disease has been shown to impact young children before the age of 6 years. Discussing dental caries prevention with the mother/caregiver(s) prior to childbirth is an ideal time to influence positive oral health behaviors. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a person-centered, goal-oriented, collaborative communication style that has been used to help individuals modify behaviors. The interrelated principles of partnership, acceptance, compassion, and evocation underpin the MI approach while utilizing communication skills such as asking open-ended questions, affirmation, reflective listening, and summarizing (OARS) to engage …

Use Of Clinical Competency Examinations For Dental Hygiene Licensure, Jocelyn D. Weinhagen, Tara L. Newcomb, Brenda T. Bradshaw Jan 2025

Use Of Clinical Competency Examinations For Dental Hygiene Licensure, Jocelyn D. Weinhagen, Tara L. Newcomb, Brenda T. Bradshaw

Dental Hygiene Faculty Publications

Dental hygiene licensure with a clinical competency examination (CCE) using a live patient has been required by state licensing boards since 1929. Clinical competency examinations were initially used when dental training was poorly developed, non-standardized, and largely based on the apprenticeship model. Currently, Canada and the state of California have removed the requirement of passing a CCE for dental hygiene licensure, provided certain requirements have been met. Dentistry is the last health care profession to mandate that graduates pass a CCE. The vast majority of dental licensing boards continue to require that third party testing agencies validate the clinical skills …

Singing Hunger In Protest Music: Nasboi’S “Hunger Games” And Post-Election Realities In Nigeria’S “Emilokan” Era, Omotayo Jemiluyi, Abubakar Tajudeen Jan 2025

Singing Hunger In Protest Music: Nasboi’S “Hunger Games” And Post-Election Realities In Nigeria’S “Emilokan” Era, Omotayo Jemiluyi, Abubakar Tajudeen

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

This article examines “Hunger Games” (2024), a protest song by Nigerian artiste and skit maker Nasboi, as an indictment of the economic hardship, political repression, and widespread disillusionment that have characterized Nigeria’s 2023 post-election landscape under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Emilokan” administration. Situating the song within Nigeria’s long-standing tradition of politically conscious music, from the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti to the contemporary commentaries of Falz and Burna Boy, the study critically dissects how “Hunger Games” reflects collective frustration and subversively positions popular music as resistance. The analysis of the study demonstrates that Nasboi’s aesthetic strategy—combining satire with repetition—renders individual hardship …

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a well-recognized etiological agent responsible for caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) and ulcerative lymphangitis (UL) in small and large ruminants, respectively. This pathogen is frequently associated with poor therapeutic outcomes in animals. In the present study, 30 bacterial isolates, recovered from 300 lymph node and pus samples (10%), were identified as Corynebacterium spp. Molecular confirmation using 16S rRNA and pld gene PCR verified 11 of these isolates as C. pseudotuberculosis, while one isolate was identified as C. jeikeium, a first record from sheep in Egypt. The isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility and genotyping using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-polymerase …

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

The National Center for Youth Law (NCYL) is a non-profit organization working to end the harms of the juvenile, municipal and criminal legal systems, including by decriminalizing normal adolescent behavior, ending financial consequences, and improving children’s access to adequate developmentally appropriate treatment. Our work prioritizes eradicating the school-to-prison pipeline, and abolishing harmful fines, fees and economic sanctions through the Debt Free Justice Campaign (DFJ).

In school districts across the nation, students receive fees and fines as consequences for school-based behavior. Students are policed and ticketed for age-appropriate behaviors and disciplinary matters such as littering, truancy, and underage drinking and smoking. …

Exploring Associations Between Personality Type & Fruit And Vegetable Consumption, Allison Woldt, Tanya Mora, Liang Ji, Julie Jones, Jeje Noval

Loma Linda University Research Reports

Fruit and vegetable intake is vital for preserving health and avoiding chronic illnesses, yet only approximately 1 in 10 adults in the U. S. adhere to daily consumption guidelines, based on CDC data. While earlier research has examined external factors such as socioeconomic status, cultural influences, and religion as significant determinants of dietary habits, new studies highlight a crucial internal element: personality. Our research delves into this emerging area by examining the connection between personality types, derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption. In contrast to the extensively studied Big Five personality framework, the …

Strategies To Support Students With Adhd During Self-Selected Reading: An Evaluation Of Token Economy And Self-Monitoring, Tora Henson

Dissertations

Students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often face challenges with attention and executive functioning, making it difficult to stay on task during self-selected reading (SSR). These difficulties can hinder academic progress. While research highlights the need for effective strategies to improve on-task behavior, limited studies have focused specifically on self-monitoring and token-economy interventions during SSR. This study investigated the impact of self-monitoring and token-economy strategies on the on-task behavior of students with ADHD during SSR. It aimed to answer the following questions: How do token economy systems and self-monitoring strategies impact on-task behavior for students with ADHD during self-selected reading? …

Building Scaffolding Instead Of Barriers: Accessibility For Neurodivergent Law Students, Katherine Silver Kelly Jan 2025

Building Scaffolding Instead Of Barriers: Accessibility For Neurodivergent Law Students, Katherine Silver Kelly

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

When it comes to accommodations and accessibility to equitable learning environments for neurodivergent law students, law schools tend to think our only tool is a hammer and approach everything as if it is a nail. As lawyers, we are experts in problem solving, we are trained to ask questions, to explore the how and why. Yet we fail to do this when it comes to addressing the needs of neurodivergent students. We know how legal education works, we know what students will encounter, what it takes to be successful, and the challenges and struggles students face. This is not to …

Book Review: Professional Wrestling And The Law, Michael Conklin

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

This is a review of Alex B. Long’s new book, Professional Wrestling and the Law: Legal Battles from the Ring to the Courtroom. Professional wrestling serves as a surprisingly adept framework for illustrating various legal principles. Long’s colloquial writing style and humorous anecdotes make for an experience as enjoyable as it is informative. This review primarily focuses on the striking parallels between the law and wrestling, particularly in how both navigate the fine line between fact and fiction as well as how they have concurrently evolved over time regarding minority and women’s rights.
