Community College Leadership At The Intersection Of Strategic Planning And Resource Management, Roxy Traxler Jan 2025

Community College Leadership At The Intersection Of Strategic Planning And Resource Management, Roxy Traxler

School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to determine the competencies that college leaders need to possess in the intersection of finance and strategic planning. For this purpose, I am using resource management as a construct to define the competencies. This is important because one area rarely mentioned in the research is how the budgeting process, policies and practices that guide financial decisions are used to support student success and the strategic plan. There is literature related to the need for financial or fiscal leadership skills but not about what those skills are and how they are used to accomplish strategic goals to improve …

Examining Disparities In Pre-Conviction Detention: A Race And Gender Analysis Of Criminal Charging And Detention Practices In Ramsey Countyention Practices In Ramsey County, Gabriel P. Exman

School of Business Student Theses and Dissertations

Race and gender disparities in the U.S. criminal justice system are well documented, primarily in sources of national post-conviction data. However, localized and pre-conviction studies remain limited. This study examined race and gender disparities in pre-conviction detention outcomes and charge severity in Ramsey County, Minnesota, between 2017 and 2019. Using a descriptive, exploratory quantitative design and a retrospective single-cohort analysis, the researcher analyzed trends in arrests, charge severity, and pre-conviction incarceration duration across race and gender groups. Findings indicate disparities in both charge rates and pre-conviction detention durations, with Black men and Native American women experiencing longer periods of incarceration. …

Surgeons, Physiatrists And Neurologists Speaking "Edx And Nerve Surgery": A Paradigm Shift For Nerve Injured Patients, Deng Pan, Aneri U Patel, J Megan Patterson, Anna Rose Johnson, Travis Gordon, Susan E Mackinnon

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Surgeons' ability to interpret electrodiagnostic (EDX) studies has greatly enhanced patient selection and outcome for nerve surgeries as it has informed our understanding of the classification of nerve injury. EDX measures axons present, lost, or demyelinated. It does not measure an area where axons experience chronic ischemia, making a Sunderland Zero nerve injury a clinical diagnosis that should be suspected when patients have normal EDX, decreased recruitment on electromyography (EMG), and no atrophy. Only observation of recovery in the earliest postoperative period would confirm a Sunderland Zero. In this article, we present an expanded classification of nerve injury, highlighting Sunderland …

Debugging The Trademark Laws Part Ii: Criminal Penalties For Trafficking In Counterfeit Microelectronics, Patricia E. Campbell Jan 2025

Debugging The Trademark Laws Part Ii: Criminal Penalties For Trafficking In Counterfeit Microelectronics, Patricia E. Campbell

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

Counterfeit microelectronics have been a persistent problem in government and industry supply chains for many years. Counterfeit electronic parts (e.g., integrated circuits, transistors, capacitors) pose serious risks to human health and safety, harm the economy, and jeopardize national security. Trafficking in counterfeit goods and services was first criminalized in 1984, and Congress has acted on several occasions to increase the corresponding penalties. Nevertheless, the trade in counterfeit microelectronics continues to evolve to meet market demands, and relatively few criminal cases have been brought for trafficking in counterfeit microelectronics. While several factors may contribute to this apparent lack of enforcement, the …

The Artificial Intelligence Trolley Problem: Governance In The Post-Chevron World, James M. Cooper, Kashyap Kompella Jan 2025

The Artificial Intelligence Trolley Problem: Governance In The Post-Chevron World, James M. Cooper, Kashyap Kompella

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

This Essay addresses a growing Constitutional challenge in public governance: the increasing delegation of consequential decisions to algorithmic systems that encode value trade-offs between liberty and security, equity and efficiency, and expression and control, without visibility, legal justification, or institutional oversight. We view this hidden normative choice an example of the “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trolley Problem.” Like the classic moral dilemma, it involves unavoidable sacrifices among competing goods. Unlike its philosophical counterpart, however, algorithmic trade-offs occur silently. They are embedded in data proxies, optimization logic, and model design, and insulated from scrutiny by claims of technical neutrality. This Essay argues …

Age is a significant risk factor for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and identifying brain age patterns is critical for comprehending the normal aging and MCI/AD processes. Prior studies have widely established the univariate relationships between brain regions and age, while multivariate associations remain largely unexplored. Herein, various artificial intelligence (AI) models were used to perform brain age prediction using an MRI dataset (

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIID (MPS IIID; Sanfilippo D) is caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfatase (GNS), which participates in catabolism of heparan sulfate (HS) glycosaminoglycans. Characterization of MPS IIID disease at a cellular level has not been robustly achieved. We used unbiased quantitative proteomics to establish a cellular phenotype for MPS IIID mice. Recombinant human GNS (rhGNS), a variant of which previously demonstrated single dose efficacy in MPS IIID human fibroblasts and in MPS IIID neonatal mice, was used to establish a repeat dosing schedule to treat MPS IIID mice. Adult Gns KO mice or heterozygous carriers were treated via …

Systemic Risk And The Social Contract, Kevin Frazier Jan 2025

Systemic Risk And The Social Contract, Kevin Frazier

SMU Science and Technology Law Review

The stability of the constitutional order turns, in part, on a stable economy and reliable advances in technology. Political order cannot withstand economic collapse or a massive technological failure. Such crises chip away at the collective will to adhere to the social contract because they indicate the government may not have the capacity to uphold its end of the bargain—protecting individual liberty from broad threats. “Unprecedented” economic downturns, however, have a precedent of emerging from the very deliberate decision of some actors to pursue extremely risky behavior in their self-interest at the expense of the public. Societal disruption from over-dependence …
