Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive
Abstract
Background: Anxiety disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide and the most prevalent mental illness in the United States. Despite affecting 6.8 million adults annually, fewer than half with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) receive treatment. Many patients present with somatic complaints, leading to underdetection. Standardized screening tools such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 item (GAD-7) can improve identification and outcomes.
Purpose: This quality improvement (QI) project implemented the GAD-7 screening tool in an adult outpatient psychiatric clinic in North Texas and evaluated its impact on identifying patients with GAD, compared to the prior year without structured screening. …

Portable Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety, Comfort, And Compatibility With Mobile Vehicular Platforms, Jacob Howard
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has evolved rapidly since its early days of imaging vials of water and mice when it was known as “zeugmatography”. As advancements in semiconductors increase computational power and algorithmic techniques stretch what we can do with this power, MRI capability is advancing beyond the conventional restraints of room-bound scanners. Low-field magnetic resonance imaging (LF-MRI) that utilizes magnets typically 1/10th the size of traditional magnets has opened the door to mobilizing this imaging modality and increased flexibility in scanner design. With these developments, a new generation of portable MRI (pMRI) is beginning its use in the hospital …

This essay brings Afrofuturism, and its notion of the plasticity of time, to imagine how we will think of the past in the future and, more specifically, to consider what will "enrapture, haunt, and/or plague thinkers in the future." Although many answers come to mind, including this country's original sin-slavery-ultimately this essay turns to our current technologies, especially policing technologies. And this essay turns the question around to ask, "How should we in the present think about the future? And what can we do now to change it?"
Consumer Protection And The Illusory Promise Of The Unconscionability Defense, Benjamin C. Zipursky, Zahra Takhshid

The United States Supreme Court’s notorious decision in AT&T Mobility LLC v. Concepcion seems to display impatience with the idea of an unconscionability defense to the enforcement of a contract. At the core of Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion, however, was not an argument against the idea of unconscionability per se, but an argument against using “unconscionability” as a cover for a broader public policy agenda. This interpretation is confirmed by the Court’s little-known decision in Marmet Health Care Center, Inc. v. Brown, handed down the term after Concepcion was decided. Plaintiffs were allowed to move forward in Marmet because …
Little Problems: Photosynthetic Textile Treatments As A Source Of Oxygen, Morgan Campbell
Little Problems: Photosynthetic Textile Treatments As A Source Of Oxygen, Morgan Campbell
Open Access Master's Theses
During human space travel, oxygen (O2) must be stored and carried aboard the shuttle for the entire journey; compressed O2 is highly flammable and combustible, thus doing so puts the crew’s lives at risk in the event of a fire (Mandel, 2019). By creating O2 onsite, the necessity of compressed O2 canisters and the associated risks can be reduced or erased entirely. Photosynthesis, the process through which plants convert atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) into O2, is one method of creating O2 (Lorch, 2020). The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has experimented with photosynthetic O2 systems since its inception but …

Fanconi Anemia (FA) is a rare human genetic disease caused by mutation of any of twenty-three genes on the FA pathway, which functions in the repair of DNA damage and the maintenance of genome stability. FA is clinically characterized by congenital abnormalities and a predisposition to aplastic anemia and malignancies. Recently, progressive neurological symptoms and abnormal neurological findings on imaging have been noted in FA patients, including cerebral and cerebellar lesions, calcification, necrosis, gliosis, and associated acute and chronic neurological symptoms; this constellation of symptoms has been termed Fanconi Anemia-Associated Neurological Syndrome (FANS).
To elucidate the molecular etiology of FANS, …
Fire District Impacts On Coastal Access In Rhode Island, Annie Longo
Fire District Impacts On Coastal Access In Rhode Island, Annie Longo
Open Access Master's Theses
There are forty-two fire districts in the coastal state of Rhode Island, nine of which are now archaically named, as they no longer provide firefighting services nor have any firefighting responsibilities. Weekapaug, Watch Hill, and Bonnet Shores fire districts are three coastal fire districts that are uninvolved with fire suppression generally, aside from the occasional bonfire permit or fireworks show. Fire districts are quasi-public entities with taxing authorities and land ownership capabilities that act as the “keepers” of many miles of pristine coastline, instead of strictly as fire departments. The actions of these fire districts often conflict with coastal access …

Development Of An Autonomous Lab-On-Paper Device For Enzymatic Activity Assays- Proof Of Concept, Cameron Hahn
Open Access Master's Theses
This work aims to build on URI’s autonomous Lab on Paper (LoP) platform technology, which was used to conduct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), to conducting enzymatic activity assays. This requires new optimizations and designs to accommodate the test. In this work we use alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme as the model analyte for the proof-of-concept. To accompany the new device, new MATLAB analytical tools were written and tested, to aid in robust colorimetric signal analysis. The test fixture was designed to be reusable, when a new paper circuit and reagent vials are supplied, however, it was assumed that an eventual final …
The Influence Of Gender On Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence In Leaders, Atticus Carroll
The Influence Of Gender On Perceptions Of Warmth And Competence In Leaders, Atticus Carroll
Open Access Master's Theses
Humans rely on stereotyping to simplify and process a complex world. The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) identifies two main dimensions of stereotyping known as warmth and competence. Previous literature has focused on perceptions of cisgender men and cisgender women, referring to those whose gender identity aligns with their sex assigned at birth, along these dimensions. However, nonbinary individuals reject the traditional gender binary, and it is not known how warmth and competence perceptions will be applied to this demographic. This study investigated whether a nonbinary leader would be rated lower on warmth, competence, and desire to have as a boss …

A Systematic Review Of The Role Of Emotion Regulation In Predicting Behavioral Inhibition Symptoms Among School-Aged Youth, Anne C. Nields
Open Access Master's Theses
Mental health challenges represent a key construct to focus on in support of childhood and adolescent well-being. Mental health challenges represent the leading cause of disability among children and adolescents. Recent research on critical periods in brain development shows that early childhood and adolescence mark times in which behavioral, neurodevelopmental, and mental health features arise. Anxiety disorders, which involve the excessive presence of fear and anxiety, are among the most common psychiatric disorders affecting youth and adults today. Emotion regulation (ER) and behavioral inhibition are important constructs correlated to anxiety which may be leveraged to predict and intervene on the …

Beyond A Boundary Of Systemic Anti-Black Racism In The Workplace In Canada, Adelle Blackett
Beyond A Boundary Of Systemic Anti-Black Racism In The Workplace In Canada, Adelle Blackett
Dalhousie Law Journal
In this lecture, I will, however, focus on one of the legacies of slavery, that is, the largely untold story of racial segregation in the world of work in Canada. We have come so effectively, and rightly, to focus on the effects of discrimination, that we may have inadvertently walked past the history. Reclaiming this history will comprise the first part of my talk.
The second part of my talk will reference the emergence of the duty of fair representation. I will seek to illustrate the weight of the erasure of anti-Black racism through this duty. In other words, far …

The Role Of Socioeconomic Indicators On Child Behavior And Academic Outcomes During Elementary School, Ashlee Mineau
Open Access Master's Theses
The impact of a child's socioeconomic status (SES) impacts all aspects of development. Children’s SES will be examined to determine the potential impact they may have on children's academics and behavior. The SES variables that will be examined are parent education, parent occupation, and household income. Parent education is one of the strongest predictors of child school achievement (Martinez et al., 2022). Children who come from a lower SES household are more likely to display externalizing behaviors (Barry et al., 2022). This study in particular looks at its impact for academic achievement in reading, math, and science and external problem …

Analysis Of Charging Station Distribution Through Socio-Demographic Factors: A Chicago Case Study, Emma M. Pensky
Open Access Master's Theses
Socio-demographic factors, such as race, income, and housing types, play a key role in the distribution of public charging infrastructure. Existing work primarily focuses on economic or technical optimizations of location planning, while a fair distribution across all population groups is often insufficiently considered. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between the geographical distribution of public electric vehicle charging stations and socio-demographic characteristics in Cook County, Illinois. It analyzes how different patterns of charging behavior relate to key socio-demographic variables and how distinct user groups can be identified based on these relationships. To achieve this, data from an electric vehicle …

The purpose of this study was to examine whether experiencing ACEs and hostile attributions led to engaging in conflict behaviors in adult romantic relationships. Additionally, it was examined whether hostile attributions served as a moderator in the relationship between experiencing ACEs and engaging in conflict behaviors. Participants were adults (N = 3.684) from the German Family Panel dataset. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the associations between experiencing ACEs, hostile attributions, and conflict behaviors. It was found that both experiencing ACEs and hostile attributions were related to engaging in conflict behaviors. However, hostile attributions did not serve as …
The Effects Of Shoe Forefoot Design On Center Of Pressure And Knee Moments During Running In A Fatigued And Non-Fatigued State, Tyler Tran
Open Access Master's Theses
Runners experience high injury prevalence, which can be attributed to the overloading of the musculoskeletal system during the repetitive motion of running (Kakouris et al. 2021, Lopes et al. 2012). While some running mechanics are associated with better performance or increased risk for developing an orthopedic condition, many are still poorly understood (Van Hooren et al. 2024, Willwacher et al. 2022). Center of pressure and frontal plane knee moments are two such mechanics with a limited body of evidence leading to its importance (Mehdizadeh et al 2021, Baker et al. 2018). Although running mechanics describe the motion, the origin of …

Eastern oyster aquaculture has increased steadily over the last three decades, but the industry has yet to achieve its full potential. In the Northeast USA, production is limited in part by a lack of high performing stocks suited to the geographically broad and heterogenous growing environments. For this study, hatchery lines from Maine, New York, and New Jersey as well as crosses between each hatchery line and the selectively bred Northeast high survival (NEHÒ) line, were deployed at oyster farms in Rhode Island and New Jersey for performance evaluation. Replicate bags of each line were stocked and maintained according to …
The Intersection Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Alcohol Use In Rhode Island High Schoolers From Marginalized Backgrounds, Sydney Iacoi
Open Access Master's Theses
Objective: Adverse childhood events (ACEs) are pervasive, affecting more than half the United States’ population. A large body of research has described an association between an increased number of ACEs and negative outcomes, including the development of a substance use disorder later in life. Further, ACEs are disproportionately experienced by individuals from historically marginalized groups. Thus, the interaction between ACEs and substance use may disproportionately impact individuals from historically marginalized groups (i.e., based on ethnicity and sex). The present study’s main aim was to examine the interaction of group differences, specifically based on sex and ethnicity, on the associations …

Alternative Visions Of Swedish State Feminism, Lukas Bullock
Alternative Visions Of Swedish State Feminism, Lukas Bullock
Theses and Dissertations--Gender and Women's Studies
Sweden has been lifted as a prominent example of a successful feminist policy enactor, and has built credibility as a humanitarian actor both domestically and transnationally. Simultaneously, intersectionally marginalized groups have attested to patterns of social exclusion and feelings of political disenfranchisement in Swedish society, calling into question Sweden’s reputation for feminist exceptionalism. This dissertation project centers on unpacking this dynamic by examining how Swedish gender equality policymaking institutions design and implement feminist policy, and how those efforts are interpreted and contested by intersectionally marginalized groups of Afro-Swedish feminist activists. Drawing from a mixed-methods framework that includes feminist ethnography (interviews, …
