Air Pollution Exposures And Cognitive Function Among Older Americans, Clarisse Nyondo Okoma

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Background: New findings indicate that environmental factors, such as air pollution, could contribute to cognitive decline among older adults. Nonetheless, extensive longitudinal studies in the U.S. investigating this connection are few and far between.

Objective: This study assessed the relationship between long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and cognitive function in older adults in the United States.

Methods: We examined data from the Health and Retirement Study (2010-2018), which included 234,250 observations from adults aged 50 and older. Cognitive performance was evaluated based on immediate and delayed word recall, a 27-point cognitive summary score, backward from 20, and …

Rct Pre-Post Training Analysis Of The Vipcorps Maternal Mortality Prevention Course With A Focus On Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Rose A. Wood Jan 2025

Rct Pre-Post Training Analysis Of The Vipcorps Maternal Mortality Prevention Course With A Focus On Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv), Rose A. Wood

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Maternal mortality rates rob families across the U.S. of a mother figure, and each death is preventable. The U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate of high-earning countries. This study assesses the effects of the VIPCorps program, a course on the top 3 risk factors of maternal mortality, on improving knowledge and attitudes towards victims of IPV. Students in helping professions at the University of Kentucky (n = 223) were recruited via on campus advertising and remotely allocated to either the VIPCorps program or a mock maternal mortality training control. Generalized linear modeling was used to estimate the difference in …

Judicial Imperialism: The Supreme Court’S Assault On Tribal Sovereignty And The Rule Of Law, Adam Crepelle Jan 2025

Judicial Imperialism: The Supreme Court’S Assault On Tribal Sovereignty And The Rule Of Law, Adam Crepelle

Faculty Publications & Other Works

The rule of law requires predictability, and the rules governing Indian country create uncertainty. For example, determining whether a person can be arrested on a reservation depends upon a combination of whether the victim and perpetrators are Indians, the type of crime, and the status of the land where the incident occurred. The same goes for contract enforcement. Even when forum selection and choice of law provisions exist, it can take years to determine whether the dispute should be adjudicated in tribal, state, or federal court. Ambiguity extends to countless other areas, including marijuana legalization and usury caps.

Indian country’s …

The Color Of Carbon: Racial Capitalism, Climate Change, And Law, Sumudu Atapattu, Carmen G. Gonzalez Jan 2025

The Color Of Carbon: Racial Capitalism, Climate Change, And Law, Sumudu Atapattu, Carmen G. Gonzalez

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Climate change is a direct consequence of capitalism’s drive to maximize profits through the unbridled extraction of wealth from humans and nature, aided and abetted at every turn by law. In its voracious demand for cheap labor, cheap raw materials, and cheap waste disposal, capitalism has created a treadmill of fossil fuel–dependent production and consumption that has triggered a planetary emergency. It has also produced extreme economic inequality—a racialized division of wealth grounded in colonialism that enables the ultrarich to capture the spoils of the capitalist global economy while billions of people continue to live in extreme poverty. The articles …

Improving End-Of-Life Care: A Nursing Education Initiative, Spring C. Kingsley Jan 2025

Improving End-Of-Life Care: A Nursing Education Initiative, Spring C. Kingsley

DNP Projects

Background: This study addresses the gap in education and training for medical intensive care unit (MICU) nurses regarding the care of hospice patients. The traditional medical model of healthcare prioritizes illness treatment, often leading to inadequate end-of-life support and increased hospitalization during patients' final days. The rise of in-hospital hospice programs, or scatter-bed hospice models, highlights the need for nurses to enhance their skills in providing end-of-life compassionate care. The MICU at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital serves as a focal point for this initiative, given its role in caring for critically ill patients who require hospice attention.

Beyond The Battlefield: Wwii’S Influence On Disability Rights And Legislation, Rachel Limburg Jan 2025

Beyond The Battlefield: Wwii’S Influence On Disability Rights And Legislation, Rachel Limburg

Tenor of Our Times

The post-war disability rights movement's momentum was largely driven by the influx of disabled veterans and the sudden need for a larger post-war workforce. Recent scholarship suggests that the origins of the movement extend beyond the societal upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, reaching back to the early 1940s and even the 1930s.; In Out of the Horrors of War: Disability Politics in World War II America, Audra Jennings argues that World War II was pivotal in transforming societal attitudes toward disability, with demand for wartime labor and the visibility of disabled veterans catalyzing these changes. Jennings highlights the significance …

State Gross Domestic Product And The Economic Legacy Of The Civil War In The American South, Jacob N. Anderson Jan 2025

State Gross Domestic Product And The Economic Legacy Of The Civil War In The American South, Jacob N. Anderson

Tenor of Our Times

Many southern states, excluding Texas and Florida, have reported significantly lower annual GDP than other American subregions since the Civil War and Reconstruction. Furthermore, some recent articles show a correlation between southern states with higher levels of poverty and those who fought on the side of the Confederacy. Several sources make a logical argument that the South is still in the process of equilibrating to the economic norm, and the continuation of certain economic principles has prolonged that process further. To examine a possible relationship between state wealth and the history of the Confederacy in the southern states, I test …

Development Of An Educational Toolkit For Washington State Nursing Professionals Regarding Climate-Related Impacts On Health, Margaret "Maggie" Pinson Jan 2025

Development Of An Educational Toolkit For Washington State Nursing Professionals Regarding Climate-Related Impacts On Health, Margaret "Maggie" Pinson

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Most healthcare professionals (HCPs) know that climate change poses a serious threat to human health, but few physicians and nurses actually discuss climate-related impacts on health with their patients. This knowledge-practice gap poses a risk to patient safety.

PROBLEM: Patients who are unaware of environmental threats to health may develop new illnesses, experience unnecessary exacerbations of underlying health problems and may die.

METHODS: A quality improvement intervention that addressed the educational needs of HCPs as described in the literature was developed and hosted on an online survey platform.

INTERVENTION: Preintervention survey questions captured baseline attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge. The …

Background: Oncology nurses face high rates of burnout and compassion fatigue, contributing to significant turnover and threatening the stability of the oncology nursing workforce. The projected increase in cancer incidence and the resulting demand for oncology services underscore the urgent need for interventions that enhance nurse resilience. Local Problem: At a major hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, it was found that oncology nurses face a significant gap in emotional support, especially during critical incidents such as patient deaths or traumatic events. Existing resources were insufficient to address the unique stressors faced by this team. Methods: A quality …

Examining The Impact Of Political Affiliation And Related Images On False Memories, Shawn Sullivan Jan 2025

Examining The Impact Of Political Affiliation And Related Images On False Memories, Shawn Sullivan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The 2024 election, similar to the 2020 election, promised political divide and rampant misinformation (Pennycook & Rand 2021). Given the intensity of this polarization, the season provided a unique opportunity to gain insight into public perceptions and false memories. False memories can impact how we view and disseminate mass media; further contributing to the emergence and circulation of misinformation, leading to significant implications for digital literacy. This study aims to understand how individuals' self-identified political affiliation contributes to their susceptibility to misinformation. Furthermore, I aim to understand how viewing related images may influence the memory of fictional events. Although both …

Gender, Victimization, And Delinquency: Examining Gendered Pathways To Crime Among Juveniles, Caitlin Hinds Jan 2025

Gender, Victimization, And Delinquency: Examining Gendered Pathways To Crime Among Juveniles, Caitlin Hinds

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The intersection of gender, crime, and victimization is a critical area of study within criminology, particularly as it relates to understanding the differing pathways men and women take into criminal behavior. Historically, crime statistics have shown a significant male predominance, particularly in violent offenses. Feminist criminology has played an essential role in reframing the narrative around gender and crime, emphasizing the need to examine the gender pathways that shape male and female experiences differently. While men may employ violence more overtly, women often rely on more subtle strategies to navigate criminal activities, avoiding physical confrontation when possible. Feminist criminologists argue …
