The Impact Of Professionalism Education And Formative Feedback In Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students Utilizing The Abbreviated Cpi Feedback Form In The On-Campus Clinic Environment, William L. Scott Jan 2025

The Impact Of Professionalism Education And Formative Feedback In Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students Utilizing The Abbreviated Cpi Feedback Form In The On-Campus Clinic Environment, William L. Scott

Dissertations

Problem

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) developed the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI) to assess the professional behaviors required for a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) student to be considered "entry level" in their clinical training. Feedback from our clinical partners has indicated that, historically, students from the Andrews University DPT program have scored lower than students from other programs in several areas of the CPI during their clinical experiences. According to subjective reports from our clinical partners, these areas included safety, professional behavior, accountability, communication, and critical thinking. These five areas have been the focus of our efforts in …

Relationship Between Financial Literacy And Financial Behavior Among Seventh-Day Adventist Full-Time Pastors In The North American Division Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Edwin G. Romero

Dissertations

Problem

This investigation intended to examine the relationship between the financial literacy components of full-time pastors and their financial behavior components. Many pastors struggle with their finances and often retire unprepared due to having inaccurate or incomplete knowledge of relevant financial information and planning strategies.

Method

This study adopted a quantitative, descriptive, and correlational approach to investigate the financial and demographic characteristics of pastors. The questionnaire completed by participants was the financial literacy questionnaire developed by Stella et al. (2020), which helped measure general financial literacy among full-time pastors, and the Financial Management Behavior Scale (FMBS) developed by Xiao (2008) …

An Exploration Of The Clinical Senior Nursing Student Preceptor Relationship, Kimberly Nicole Dunker Jan 2025

An Exploration Of The Clinical Senior Nursing Student Preceptor Relationship, Kimberly Nicole Dunker

Dissertations

Problem

The use of clinical preceptors for training is well documented in the literature as an effective strategy for helping students, new graduates, and RNs orient to their roles in healthcare facilities. The need to ensure that the preceptor is adequately trained and then matched to a preceptee for a successful relationship is a challenge. The healthcare facility does its best to identify a preceptor and ensure adequate training is completed and there is a willingness to facilitate the experience. The academic institution is required to ensure that preceptors are chosen based on criteria outlined by the board of nursing …

From Devout Follower Of Muhammad To Committed Disciple Of Jesus: Principles And Methods Of Transition Phase Discipleship Among Adventist Believers From A Muslim Background In Ethiopia, Temesgen Bulti Besha

Dissertations

Islam is the second most dominant religion in Ethiopia commanding about 34 percent of the over one hundred ten million population of the country. The Seventh-day Adventist Church has not been successful, until recently, to effectively reach this large and growing Muslim population. In the last decade and half, hundreds of Ethiopian Muslims are coming to faith in Christ through the ministry of the Church. However, church members, leaders, and disciplers lack adequate understanding of the transition phase discipleship during which the new believers from Muslim background (BMBs) go through considerable challenges such as persecution, lack of social and economic …

Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh Jan 2025

Quantification Of Auxin-Cytokinin Response During Primary Root And Lateral Root Development In Common Bean, Gurdeep Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Roots support water and nutrient uptake, anchorage, and soil interactions through continuous growth at the primary root tip (PRT). In common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), new cells are produced in an open root apical meristem and subsequently elongate in the elongation zone, and together these processes drive root tip progression through the soil. Lateral roots (LRs) arise in the differentiation zone, where pairs of pericycle founder cells dedifferentiate, divide asymmetrically, and form lateral root primordia (LRP) that pass through defined developmental stages before emergence. Auxin and cytokinin (CK) are central regulators of both primary root growth and LR development, yet their …

Using Virtual Reality To Assist Students At Academic Risk In Human Anatomy, Michael Foley, Lauren T. Lilley, Lindsay Meyers, Robert Armstrong, Lisa Fore-Arcand, Kelly Mccoy, Chad Eitel, Tod R. Clapp, Natascha Heise Jan 2025

Using Virtual Reality To Assist Students At Academic Risk In Human Anatomy, Michael Foley, Lauren T. Lilley, Lindsay Meyers, Robert Armstrong, Lisa Fore-Arcand, Kelly Mccoy, Chad Eitel, Tod R. Clapp, Natascha Heise

Department of Pathology & Anatomy Faculty Publications

Learning human anatomy presents a significant challenge for health profession students due to the difficulty in visualizing structures in three dimensions. Virtual reality (VR) has been reported to aid in understanding these relationships. In this study, students at academic risk attended VR sessions alongside their gross anatomy course. Data from post-surveys, observations, and examinations indicated VR participants performed similarly to peers, except in head/neck and pelvis/lower limb exams where performance was lower. Students valued VR for enhancing confidence and understanding. VR shows promise in supplementing anatomy education, particularly for less complex regions, and bridging gaps in traditional learning methods.

Electrical Homeostasis Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Potential, Peyman Fahimi, Lázaro A. M. Castanedo, P. Thomas Vernier, Cherif F. Matta Jan 2025

Electrical Homeostasis Of The Inner Mitochondrial Membrane Potential, Peyman Fahimi, Lázaro A. M. Castanedo, P. Thomas Vernier, Cherif F. Matta

Bioelectrics Publications

The electric potential across the inner mitochondrial membrane must be maintained within certain bounds for the proper functioning of the cell. A feedback control mechanism for the homeostasis of this membrane potential is proposed whereby an increase in the electric field decreases the rate-limiting steps of the electron transport chain (ETC). An increase in trans-membrane electric field limits the rate of proton pumping to the inter-membrane gap by slowing the ETC reactions and by intrinsically induced electroporation that depolarizes the inner membrane. The proposed feedback mechanism is akin to a Le Chatelier's-type principle of trans-membrane potential feedback control.

The Inevitability Of Adaptability - Comparative Contributions To Understanding Originalism, Anna C. Conley Jan 2025

The Inevitability Of Adaptability - Comparative Contributions To Understanding Originalism, Anna C. Conley

Faculty Law Review Articles

What can comparative law teach us about originalism as a constitutional interpretation method? After synthesizing existing comparative analyses, this article seeks to redefine comparative law’s role in understanding originalism. When defining originalism strictly to require adherence to fixed original meaning, originalism is not used by courts anywhere in the world. Instead, courts use history purposively to understand the intent behind constitutional text as one of many methods of interpretation. Comparative works suggest historical constitutional interpretation has a complex relationship with rights, politics and culture.

Comparative law can provide not only descriptive understandings of originalism but also interrogate its mandate that …

Limits On Traffic Stops: Saving Lives By Constraining Police Authority, Jeannine Bell, Stephen Rushin Jan 2025

Limits On Traffic Stops: Saving Lives By Constraining Police Authority, Jeannine Bell, Stephen Rushin

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article considers how policymakers can more effectively constrain police authority during traffic stops to reduce racial disparities and prevent unnecessary violence.

We begin by chronicling the power granted to police officers during traffic enforcement and the harms generated by this discretionary power. Under existing criminal procedure, police officers have considerable authority to stop motorists for any technical violation of the traffic code, even if the stated justification is a pretext for investigating an unrelated hunch or suspicion. After stopping a motorist, existing doctrine gives police the ability to question them, search their vehicles under numerous circumstances, arrest drivers for …

Delay, Deny, Tax, Samuel D. Brunson Jan 2025

Delay, Deny, Tax, Samuel D. Brunson

Faculty Publications & Other Works

Health insurance companies are having a moment in the United States. Their moment involves widespread public objections to their seemingly random and increasing willingness to deny coverage and reimbursement to insureds. These denials are in large part not part of a program to improve health coverage but, rather, to reduce insurance companies’ expenses and, in turn, increase their profits.

There is broad consensus that something has to change. The public demands it. Bipartisan groups of senators and representatives have investigated it. Even the health care industry acknowledges that something needs to change. To actually make the health care system better …

Nature-Based Solutions For Urban Climate Resilience: Assessment Of Environmental Planning & Policy Perspective In New York City, Padmi R. Ranasinghe Jan 2025

Nature-Based Solutions For Urban Climate Resilience: Assessment Of Environmental Planning & Policy Perspective In New York City, Padmi R. Ranasinghe

Planning Dissertations - Archive

Climate change exerts a profound global influence, elevating the risk of disasters. Rapid urbanization and high population density make cities increasingly vulnerable to disasters. Climate impact is intense for cities in deltas and coastal regions, highlighting the importance of managing urban watersheds effectively. Often, climate change affects people unequally, with marginalized communities being extra vulnerable to climate-related disasters due to where they live (geographical vulnerability) and limited adaptive capacity. People often live in areas vulnerable to climate-related hazards, including flood zones and regions affected by environmental injustices. Enhancing city resilience is crucial, as it needs to reduce vulnerability and exposure …

Hysteria By Any Other Name: The Unchanging Treatment Of Women In Healthcare (1850–1980), Logan Lynxwiler Jan 2025

Hysteria By Any Other Name: The Unchanging Treatment Of Women In Healthcare (1850–1980), Logan Lynxwiler

Undergraduate Research Awards

Despite the evolution of hysteria from a gynecological affliction to a psychological disorder—and its eventual disappearance as a formal diagnosis by 1980—the fundamental mistreatment of women’s healthcare persisted. The understanding of hysteria across Europe and the United States evolved significantly from 1850 to 1980, but even as medical definitions of hysteria changed over time, the treatment of women remained largely unchanged, as physicians continued to dismiss, control, and pathologize their health concerns through invasive and often harmful interventions.

How Forest Stand Conditions Influence Whitebark Pine And Clark’S Nutcracker: A Systematic Review, Bryan Mathew Cohen Jan 2025

How Forest Stand Conditions Influence Whitebark Pine And Clark’S Nutcracker: A Systematic Review, Bryan Mathew Cohen

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis), a keystone species of high-elevation ecosystems of western North America, is threatened with extinction due to disease (Blister rust), pests (Mountain pine beetle), and climate change. Regeneration of the species depends nearly exclusively on the seed-caching behavior of Clark’s nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana, Family Corvidae). Because of this, conservation of whitebark ecosystems requires restoring stand structures that favor nutcrackers. Although there are increasing numbers of studies on the relationship between nutcrackers and whitebark pine, findings have not yet been synthesized, limiting knowledge for application to management. I did a systematic literature review to answer the following questions: …

Bridging Top-Down Values And Bottom-Up Practices: A Case Study On A Rebar Fabrication Facility, Kaitlynn J. Martin

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

This study examines how alignment between top-down corporate values and bottom-up shop-floor practices influences culture and productivity within metal manufacturing. Using a qualitative case study of a rebar fabrication facility, observations were conducted across two periods to assess how leadership communication, safety culture, and teamwork evolved in response to management changes. The analysis integrates lean Six Sigma principles with organizational culture theory to evaluate how leadership behaviors shape safety adherence, cross-training, and operational performance. Findings reveal that when corporate values, particularly safety and collaboration, are actively modeled by local leadership, they become embedded in daily behavior, leading to improvements in …

Developing An Evidence-Based Culture Through Journal Club: A Pilot Study, Allison Davidson Jan 2025

Developing An Evidence-Based Culture Through Journal Club: A Pilot Study, Allison Davidson

DNP Scholarly Projects

Evidence-based practice is essential for improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs, yet its implementation in nursing remains limited due to persistent barriers such as lack of knowledge, leadership support, time, and resources. Despite these challenges, nurses generally hold positive attitudes toward EBP, indicating a strong foundation for future initiatives aimed at enhancing education, training, and organizational commitment. To fully integrate evidence-based practice into nursing care, healthcare systems must address these barriers and invest in sustained support, ensuring that clinical decisions are consistently guided by the best available evidence. A pilot nursing journal club, led by an evidence-based practice mentor …

Optimizing Compression In Venous Leg Ulcers To Improve Wound Healing Rates Through Wound Care Nurse Support: A Quality Improvement Project, Temilola Obisesan

DNP Scholarly Projects

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are the most common lower extremity ulcers, accounting for 75% of chronic leg wounds and affect up to 2% of the population in developing countries. Generally, it has a 1-year recurrence rate of 40-70%. VLUs costs about $11B in the USA and other developed countries annually. Patients with VLUs spend about $7,000 more annually. Compression therapy along with local wound care is the best approach for VLU management, with compression therapy as the gold standard. Currently, compression therapy is underutilized in VLU care. The goal of this QI project is to provide wound nurses who …

Developing A Rural Family Health Curriculum To Promote Retention Of New Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Molly G. Boudreau Jan 2025

Developing A Rural Family Health Curriculum To Promote Retention Of New Graduate Nurse Practitioners, Molly G. Boudreau

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: There is a critical shortage of primary care providers (PCPs) in rural areas of the United States. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are essential for addressing the primary care shortage especially in rural communities. However, significant barriers exist to the retention of NPs in rural communities, especially new graduate NPs in the first year of practice. Evidence in the literature suggests bolstering the focus on transition-to-practice for new graduate NPs to improve retention and turnover rates.

Purpose: The aim of this quality improvement project was to develop a structured, postgraduate, on-boarding curriculum at a rural outpatient family medicine clinic with the …

Feeding With Competence: Empowering Parents In Ng Feeding For Nicu Graduates: A Quality Improvement Project, Karen Marsh Jan 2025

Feeding With Competence: Empowering Parents In Ng Feeding For Nicu Graduates: A Quality Improvement Project, Karen Marsh

DNP Scholarly Projects

Abstract

Background: Infants who are born prematurely stay in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until they are able to take full enteral nutrition by mouth. While in the NICU a nasogastric tube (NG tube) would be used to supplement the volume needed to be ingested for optimal nutrition. Infants typically feed better with a consistent caregiver and at home in an environment with less stimulation. Allowing infants to be discharged with an NG tube allows the parents to be more involved in their infant's care with a shorter hospital stay. An increased number of infants being discharged home with …

Background: Cervical ripening is a critical component of labor induction. Outpatient cervical ripening using mechanical dilators offers a safe patient- centered alternative to inpatient management, with potential benefits in efficiency and patient satisfaction and cost savings.

Local Problem: At a community hospital setting with increasing induction rates, prolonged admission-to-delivery times and prolonged patient stays were observed in patients undergoing inpatient cervical ripening, prompting a need for more efficient, patient centered approaches.

Methods: Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework, an outpatient cervical ripening protocol was implemented over a 15-week period to compare inpatient versus outpatient cervical ripening using mechanical …

Improving The Process Of Performing Stroke Assessments Within The Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Michael Ferrone Jan 2025

Improving The Process Of Performing Stroke Assessments Within The Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Michael Ferrone

DNP Scholarly Projects

Background: An acute stroke is a potentially life-threatening medical condition that may lead to significant morbidity and mortality. It is imperative that patients seek emergent medical attention as several of the known interventions are time-limited based upon the time of symptom onset. Once patients present for evaluation, it is of equal importance for medical professionals to recognize that someone may be experiencing an acute stroke and to escalate their care appropriately. Among the various evidence-based stroke assessments, the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) is often implemented given its ability to detect acute neurological abnormalities and estimate stroke severity. …

Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstones

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that negatively impacts occupational performance due to the effect it has on motor and nonmotor skills. Research suggests that forced intense exercise such as noncontact boxing improves these motor and nonmotor symptoms in individuals with PD. Unfortunately, there is no literature that determines a direct link to noncontact boxing and an improvement in occupational performance for individuals with PD. This study aims to make this direct link using the Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) protocol.
