Elementary School-Based Speech-Language Pathologists' Perspectives On The Management Of Pediatric Feeding And Swallowing Disorders, Kelsi L. Szakovits

Brehm Scholars Research

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) frequently serve autistic students in the school setting. Research reveals a relationship between autism, sensory processing, and pediatric feeding disorder (PFD). As a result, autistic students may have compromised nutritional health and safety, which stands to impact their ability to access the curriculum. PFD is under the scope of the school-based speech-language pathologist’s practice. However, data has shown a perceived lack of confidence and a limited number of support and resources in the educational setting for SLPs to carry out interventions. This qualitative study will seek to understand the perspectives of elementary school-based SLPs regarding the implementation …

The Vicious Patent Cycle: Addressing The Current Conflict Facing Startup Valuation And Patent Risk Through Policy Change, Karlie Hinton Jan 2025

The Vicious Patent Cycle: Addressing The Current Conflict Facing Startup Valuation And Patent Risk Through Policy Change, Karlie Hinton

IP Theory

Young, startup, and growth companies play an increasingly important role in driving innovation and economic growth, but they face distinct challenges when attempting to leverage valuable assets to secure funding and scale their ventures. The valuation of startup companies, especially those built around new technologies and corresponding intellectual property, presents a complex challenge. With limited financial history and uncertain futures, investors often turn to proxies like patents to ascribe potential value. In recent years, the practice of startups using patents to secure investment and higher valuations has become increasingly common. However, this growing reliance on patents raises important questions about …

The Mathematics Of Regulatory Fragmentation: Understanding The Multiplicative Costs Of State-Level Platform Requirements, Amanda Reid Jan 2025

The Mathematics Of Regulatory Fragmentation: Understanding The Multiplicative Costs Of State-Level Platform Requirements, Amanda Reid

IP Theory

The recent wave of state-level social media regulation represents an unprecedented experiment in territorial control of digital platforms. While constitutional questions around state authority remain central to these debates, this article examines a distinct but complementary concern: the mathematical reality of how overlapping technical requirements multiply compliance burdens. These laws aim to protect youth online through technical mandates, yet they create a regulatory patchwork that generates multiplicative rather than additive costs. Following combination theory [N(N-1)/2], each new state regulation creates conflict points with existing requirements.

This article analyzes how this regulatory multiplication affects platform architecture, user experience, and safety outcomes. …

Under The Radar: The Hidden Harms Of Patent Practices In Defense Contracting, Hunter Schmittou Jan 2025

Under The Radar: The Hidden Harms Of Patent Practices In Defense Contracting, Hunter Schmittou

IP Theory

28 U.S.C. § 1498 allows the federal government and its contractors to use patented technologies without prior authorization, with the government assuming liability for infringement. While originally intended to facilitate procurement, its modern application has weakened patent protections, allowing contractors to incorporate patented innovations with minimal legal or financial consequences. This system disincentivizes private-sector investment in military technology, distorts competition, and increases procurement inefficiencies, ultimately placing the burden of infringement on taxpayers. The resulting imbalance not only stifles innovation but also entrenches reliance on a small group of dominant defense contractors, reducing technological diversity and slowing progress. Addressing these shortcomings …

Generative Ai's Copyright Enigma: A Comparative Study Of Fair Use And Fair Dealing, Taysir Awad

IP Theory

At the dawn of this decade, generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) models were at the apogee of modern science and technology. Their emergence introduced the world to a new paradigm of creativity and innovation, where machines can synthesize art, literature, and design with unprecedented sophistication, blurring the boundaries between human ingenuity and algorithmic computation. These models have the capacity to regenerate Oscar Wilde with the depiction of Ansel Adams, rewrite Harry Potter with William Shakespear’s proverbial tongue, and redesign St. Peter’s Basilica with Gothic arches, Seljuk carved stones, and an Antoni Gaudi roof architecture, relocated in the heart of New York …

Will Malaysia Become An Active Middle Power?, Bruce Gilley Jan 2025

Will Malaysia Become An Active Middle Power?, Bruce Gilley

Politics and Global Affairs Faculty Publications and Presentations

Malaysia’s economic growth and democratisation since 2003 have vaulted it into the ranks of the middle powers in the international system. However, Malaysia remains hesitant about its middle power status. It has assumed a counterhegemonic or pro-multipolarity role; it has supported some new international rules and institutions; it leads regional governance institutions; and it advocates for small countries on development issues. However, these middle power behaviours are countered by a continuation of traditional Malaysia diplomacy which is inactive in shaping the emergence of superpower China as well as being disruptive and personalistic, most recently because of its embrace of radicalisms. …

Mandatory Fertilizer Regulations: A Survey Of State And Federal Laws, S. Emily Grams, James Rehwaldt Jan 2025

Mandatory Fertilizer Regulations: A Survey Of State And Federal Laws, S. Emily Grams, James Rehwaldt

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

The Environmental Protection Agency describes nutrient pollution as “one of the most widespread and challenging environmental problems faced by our nation.” Despite this acknowledgment, federal and state governments impose little to no mandatory laws to regulate the application of synthetic fertilizers to farmland, the primary source of nutrient pollution. Further, emissions from agriculture play a key role in global emissions; failing to address them could prevent the global attainment of the 1.5 degrees Celsius and 2 degrees Celsius climate change goals. In an attempt to shed light on the issue, this Article describes the significant climatic and environmental impacts of …

Latino Voters In The United States: Mobilization And Mechanisms Of Engagement Through Political Parties, Campaign Contact And Non-Partisan Organizations, Adriana M. Mendoza Jan 2025

Latino Voters In The United States: Mobilization And Mechanisms Of Engagement Through Political Parties, Campaign Contact And Non-Partisan Organizations, Adriana M. Mendoza

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates the low political participation of Latinos in the United States, focusing on the strategies used by political parties, campaigns and non-partisan organization to increase voter turnout, as well as the mechanisms through which these strategies affect voting behavior. Current theories of political mobilization provide a solid foundation; however, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms that drive mobilization within the Latino electorate. Through quantitative analysis using multivariate regression on data from the 2020 presidential election, I investigate the relationship between party and campaign contact on individual voting behavior. Additionally, elite interviews conducted with key stakeholders, including community …

The Implications Of The Menstrual Cycle On Upper Extremity Function And Injury Risk, Kaitlyn Ashley Armstrong Jan 2025

The Implications Of The Menstrual Cycle On Upper Extremity Function And Injury Risk, Kaitlyn Ashley Armstrong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are the leading cause of time lost from work in the healthcare industry (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022). Women account for 75 percent of the total employment in hospitals (BLS, 2022). It is important to identify key risk factors that may be contributing to the high rates of injury in this sector. Females bring a variety of unique factors into account, and understanding these factors could be critical for improving individual health and the burden placed on the system due to absenteeism resulting from injury. The cyclical hormonal fluctuations that occur over a menstrual cycle …

Access To Pharmacies: Implications For Theory, Outcomes, And Policy, Emily Gravlee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation achieved the following objectives: (1) developed a patient-centered access to pharmacies framework; (2) evaluated the impact of pharmacy closures on immunization rates among Medicare beneficiaries; and (3) examined the influence of state-level pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) regulations on rates of pharmacy closures.

For objective 1, a grounded theory methodology was used to identify a patient-centered access to pharmacies framework (PcAP). This framework asserts that patients determine whether they have access to a pharmacy through evaluation of their characteristics, the characteristics of pharmacies, and their own needs or values within the context of a health-related need. This evaluation of …

The Underrepresentation Of African American Male Educators In K-12 Education, Nisa Lewis Johnson Jan 2025

The Underrepresentation Of African American Male Educators In K-12 Education, Nisa Lewis Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American education system has struggled with a significant teacher shortage for years. Alongside this shortage is the underrepresentation of African American male teachers. Despite the increasing diversity of the student population, African American men make up less than 2% of teachers nationwide (Aftunion, 2020). This disparity denies all kids access to diverse perspectives in the classroom and limits the presence of role models for students of color. Research studies have shown that African American students who have African American teachers show improvement in their grades, standardized test scores, attendance records, and graduation rates (Breazeale, 2023). This study aimed to …

Asking Pharmacists About Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptives: Intention Among Adolescents And Young Women, Ivy Leong Jan 2025

Asking Pharmacists About Over-The-Counter Oral Contraceptives: Intention Among Adolescents And Young Women, Ivy Leong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent availability of over-the-counter oral contraceptives eliminates many barriers to accessing birth control. Even with this easier accessibility, pharmacists can still play an important role in educating users, especially adolescents and young adults. However, hesitation to reach out to pharmacists among younger populations has been documented. Additionally, little is known about the underlying driver of this hesitation.

This study aimed to examine predictors of young females’ willingness to seek assistance from pharmacists for over-the-counter oral contraceptive use and to determine the difference in the effect of these predictors between adolescents (age 16 to 17) and young women (age 18 …

Exploring Aging And Bone Health In Normal Weight Obesity And The Prevalence Of Unhealthy Lean Phenotypes, Pouria Sefidmooye Azar Jan 2025

Exploring Aging And Bone Health In Normal Weight Obesity And The Prevalence Of Unhealthy Lean Phenotypes, Pouria Sefidmooye Azar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a complex chronic condition characterized by the excessive accumulation of body fat. While numerous studies have highlighted the risks of adverse complications associated with obesity, limited research has explored the relationship of body composition phenotypes, more specifically normal weight obesity with aging, and bone health. Also, the prevalence of unhealthy lean phenotypes in adults in the U.S. is not clear. A secondary-data analysis of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002 were performed to further examine the relationship between body composition phenotypes—normal weight lean (NWL), overweight/obesity with normal body fat percentage (OBL), normal weight obesity (NWO), …
