The Critical Role Of External Involvement In Supporting Adolescent Mothers Facing Postpartum Depression, Samantha Campopiano
The Critical Role Of External Involvement In Supporting Adolescent Mothers Facing Postpartum Depression, Samantha Campopiano
Nursing | Senior Theses
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health concern for adolescent mothers, especially those without a reliable support system. The current research demonstrates the importance of a support system, effective interventions, and prevention strategies for easier navigation of postpartum depression. Some effective interventions researched were therapy groups, personalized home visits, and using social media platforms to deliver therapy. This research proposal aims to examine the effectiveness of a nurse-led educational intervention for postpartum adolescent mothers without support. A quasi-experimental design will be used, with pre-and post-test assessments using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to measure PPD symptoms in 100 …
Impact Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions On Immunization-Related Anxiety Among Pediatric Patients, Jessica Ho
Impact Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions On Immunization-Related Anxiety Among Pediatric Patients, Jessica Ho
Nursing | Senior Theses
Immunization-related anxiety can lead to vaccine hesitancy, which can be detrimental to public health by reducing herd immunity and increasing the spread of preventable diseases. This research proposal aims to investigate how nurses implementing non-pharmacological interventions can reduce immunization-related anxiety among pediatric patients. The literature critique focuses on examining the efficacy of various non-pharmacological interventions on reducing procedural pain, fear, and anxiety in pediatric patients. Research shows that those who received non-pharmacological interventions experienced decreased pain, fear, and anxiety levels. This proposal will use a randomized control trial design with a convenience sample of 200 pediatric patients from flu clinics …
The Impact Of A Educational Program On Depression And Anxiety For Low Socioeconomic Latina Postpartum Mothers, Lizbeth Valdez Duran
The Impact Of A Educational Program On Depression And Anxiety For Low Socioeconomic Latina Postpartum Mothers, Lizbeth Valdez Duran
Nursing | Senior Theses
Postpartum depression (PPD) and anxiety are significant mental health challenges that affect many mothers, especially Latina women with low socioeconomic backgrounds. These mothers often face barriers to care, health literacy, and access to healthcare resources. The problem is compounded by a lack of culturally competent care, which can contribute to mistrust of healthcare providers and discourage Latina mothers from seeking help. The literature review articles highlight that health literacy plays a crucial role in managing mental health, with effective education potentially reducing negative outcomes by improving coping strategies and bringing awareness to symptoms that are associated with postpartum. This research …
Nursing Education On Sleep Health And Its Impact On Insulin Resistance In Adolescents, Salamasina Tufa
Nursing Education On Sleep Health And Its Impact On Insulin Resistance In Adolescents, Salamasina Tufa
Nursing | Senior Theses
Modern-day adolescents are increasingly at risk for poor sleep quality due to rapid physical and physiological changes and stressors from technology and social media. Recent research suggests poor sleep affects endocrine function and contributes to insulin resistance (IR), a precursor to Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). This proposed quasi-experimental study will examine if a nurse-led sleep education program can improve sleep quality and decrease the incidence of IR in adolescents with poor sleep. A total of 100 participants aged 12-18 across Berkley, California who score ≥ 5 on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) will be randomly assigned to either …
Preparing Nurses For Medical-Assistance In Dying: The Role Of Comprehensive Education And Training, Keira O'Reilly
Preparing Nurses For Medical-Assistance In Dying: The Role Of Comprehensive Education And Training, Keira O'Reilly
Nursing | Senior Theses
Medical-assistance in dying (MAID) is a process in which a consenting patient self-administers lethal medications with the intent of ending their life. This process is marked with ethical, emotional, and spiritual complexities. Nurses play a key role in MAID, through providing care as well as being a patient advocate. Specifically, intensive care unit (ICU) nurses often provide care to critical or terminally ill patients. However, according to the research, little formal training or education about MAID has been put into place for ICU nurses. To investigate, primary research articles regarding healthcare professionals’ experiences with MAID, educational gaps, and current training …
Delayed And Misdiagnosed Endometriosis, Teresa Doyle
Delayed And Misdiagnosed Endometriosis, Teresa Doyle
Nursing | Senior Theses
Aim: This research investigates whether targeted education can improve the early diagnosis of endometriosis, a chronic condition affecting around 10% of women of reproductive age. Unfortunately, endometriosis is often misdiagnosed, delaying treatment, prolonging discomfort, and lowering quality of life. Healthcare practitioners' knowledge gap is addressed by this study, which examines whether organized training promotes awareness and diagnostic accuracy. This research proposal evaluates an educational intervention developed to improve gynecological experts' knowledge and diagnostic skills. The main research issue is whether the intervention reduces misdiagnosis and improves patient outcomes. A quasi-experimental design will examine participants' knowledge and diagnosis accuracy before and …

Shadows Of Self Doubt: Exploring The Dual Threat Of Impostor Syndrome On New Nurses And Quality Care, Siona Patel
Shadows Of Self Doubt: Exploring The Dual Threat Of Impostor Syndrome On New Nurses And Quality Care, Siona Patel
Nursing | Senior Theses
Every nursing student goes through a transition period after nursing school where they step into the role of a new graduate nurse, and adapt to the demands of the clinical setting. Their acquired knowledge and skills taught to them are now applied to high stake situations of the real world. This critical time period is often paired with a mental phenomenon known as imposter syndrome in which competent people feel doubt or fraudulently of their skill set which can affect patient care and cause burnout. This thesis explores the connection between imposter syndrome and burnout and their impact on patient …
Nursing Knowledge Regarding Pap Smears For Transgender Men, Caytlin Capulong
Nursing Knowledge Regarding Pap Smears For Transgender Men, Caytlin Capulong
Nursing | Senior Theses
Cervical cancer screening (CCS) is a crucial test used for preventative measures against cervical cancer, yet transgender men (TM) experience significantly lower screening rates in comparison to cisgender women due to pain, anxiety, and systemic healthcare barriers. A major factor for deterrence is pain during speculum insertion, often because of vaginal atrophy related to testosterone usage. Other factors include fear of discrimination, mistreatment, and lack of provider awareness, particularly among nurses who play a pivotal role in patient preparation and care. This research aims to assess the extent of nurses’ knowledge regarding Pap smears for female-to-male (FTM) patients through a …

Restorative Justice Initiatives In Marin County: Mitigating The Impacts Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline On Youth, Gina Dudley
Restorative Justice Initiatives In Marin County: Mitigating The Impacts Of The School-To-Prison Pipeline On Youth, Gina Dudley
Social Justice | Senior Theses
My senior thesis project delves into Restorative Justice's role in addressing the school-to-prison pipeline in Marin County. Restorative Justice prioritizes repairing the harm caused by crime to individuals, relationships, and communities, advocating for offenders to take responsibility and make amends rather than solely facing punishment (Restorative Justice Exchange, 2022). My capstone aims to pinpoint factors driving student exclusion from schools and subsequent entanglement in the legal system while highlighting how restorative approaches can prevent such outcomes. Additionally, it discusses the benefits of removing police officers from schools and reducing reliance on law enforcement within educational settings. My research will use …

Silent Chains: Family And Religious Systems As Foundations Of Child Slavery And Labor In Ghana (1775-1956), Patricia Esi Quainoo
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
This study explores the often-overlooked role of children in slavery and forced labor in Ghana, emphasizing their exploitation in domestic service, agriculture, and other labor sectors. While existing scholarship often subsumes children within broader narratives of slavery, this research highlights their distinct experiences and their crucial role in sustaining Indigenous slavery. It argues that child slavery in Ghana was reinforced by familial practices such as the pawnship system, religious obligations like the trokosi system, and the reliance on family farms, where children served as producers and carriers of cocoa. Additionally, missionaries employed children as laborers in mission stations, schools, and …
Progressive Copyright Theory, Emily Behzadi Cárdenas
Progressive Copyright Theory, Emily Behzadi Cárdenas
Faculty Scholarship
The legacy of colonialism, dispossession, and racial injustice is foundational to existing inequalities in modern copyright law. Traditionally, the primary purpose of copyright laws was to incentivize “progress” through the dissemination of new works, thereby conferring economic benefits to both the creator and society at large. Such economic-based notions of “progress” have historically favored the creative contributions of privileged groups while simultaneously disregarding those of historically oppressed groups. Progressive property theory acknowledges that there are social responsibilities and relationships inherent in private property ownership. Scholarship on progressive property law has exposed the need to reevaluate how property law regimes perpetuate …

Taking Integrity Risks Seriously, Miriam H. Baer
Taking Integrity Risks Seriously, Miriam H. Baer

Several recent scandals in higher education have illuminated notable weaknesses in the academy’s scholarly self-monitoring function. Plagiarism, undisclosed conflicts of interest, and shocking allegations of data fraud have arisen in contexts suggesting real weaknesses in peer review and other internal monitoring mechanisms.
Although the legal academy is different in many ways from the rest of higher education, it is hardly immune to the familiar precursors of fraud—opportunity, pressure, and rationalizations. Moreover, the academy's reliance on student-written law reviews creates additional challenges for holding wayward legal scholars accountable for their integrity violations.

Climate Litigation And Third-Party Litigation Finance, Courtney Geiss
Climate Litigation And Third-Party Litigation Finance, Courtney Geiss
Indiana Law Journal
For the last 200 years, human activities have been the main driver of global climate change, particularly the burning of fossil fuels. Increased emissions from fossil fuels have contributed to rising temperatures, food scarcity, and natural disasters, including fires, flooding, and droughts. Although climate change has been an issue in the public eye for the last several decades, global emissions are projected to continue increasing. At this point, it is clear that current actions at the individual and state level are not enough to meaningfully reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this Note, I will discuss the idea of using third-party …
Super-Groups: Legal Empowerment And "Public Law", Matthew Lawrence
Super-Groups: Legal Empowerment And "Public Law", Matthew Lawrence
Indiana Law Journal
Not all interest groups are created equal. Some groups are created by or with the help of law. Law can confer political power on groups through wealth, rents, concentrated interest, and durability, creating synthetic factions that use their stategiven influence to dominate lawmaking. Deregulatory and progressive traditions in public law have long thought differently about laws that empower. A deregulatory tradition sees legal empowerment as a democratic pathology that counsels against lawmaking, citing empowerment concerns as a perennial rhetorical point against consumer protection, environmental protection, and social welfare programs, among others, for fear they will lead to “capture.” At the …

Jbs’S Initial Public Offering: Threats To Environmental And Human Rights, Kayla Thompson
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
This paper centers around the decision to be made regarding JBS, the world’s largest meat company, wanting to list shares on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and the environmental and social impacts that could result from the Security and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approval. JBS has been at the center of various controversies over the last several years, including sourcing cattle from ranches acquired through illegal deforestation, engaging in greenwashing practices, incorrectly reporting greenhouse gas emissions, and engaging in human rights abuses. Many environmental groups have filed complaints with the SEC concerning JBS’s bid to list on the NYSE. The …
Prescribing A Balance: Sustaining Environmental Health With Pharmaceutical Interest In Puerto Rico, Derek Warzel
Prescribing A Balance: Sustaining Environmental Health With Pharmaceutical Interest In Puerto Rico, Derek Warzel
Indiana Law Journal
Puerto Rico, often referred to as the “Medical Cabinet of the U.S.A.,” is a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing, contributing significantly to the American medical supply chain and Puerto Rico’s economy. However, decades of industrial activity, compounded by climate events like Hurricane Maria, have led to severe environmental damage, particularly through groundwater contamination and damaged Superfund sites. This Note examines the historical intersection of economic incentives and environmental neglect in Puerto Rico, focusing on the pharmaceutical industry’s impact. By critically analyzing the Superfund program and proposing reforms, this Note advocates for a balanced approach: introducing proactive environmental protections and financial incentives …

On October 4, 2018, Jerod Draper lost his life after two hours of torture by Harrison County jail officers. While in custody of the jail and suffering from an overdose, Jerod Draper was placed in a restraint chair for two hours and tased seven times in fifteen minutes. Jerod Draper’s story is one of the many stories demonstrating how a jail death epidemic is occurring throughout Indiana. In this Note, I discuss the history of incarceration in the United States, the statutes under which families of jail death victims can sue, and Indiana’s jail death problem. I then highlight Indiana’s …

The Bankruptcy Off-Ramp From Complex Civil Litigation: Purdue Pharma, Opioids, And Unorthodox Civil Procedure In Public Harms Cases, Abbe R. Gluck
Indiana Law Journal
For civil procedure scholars, bankruptcy has become exciting. Last year, the United States Supreme Court decided for the first time a case that implicated both the core of the national opioids litigation and one of the most important developments in modern civil procedure—namely, the enormous amount of unorthodox procedural innovation that is happening in the courts as parties strive to reach global settlement.
The decision, Harrington v. Purdue L.P., took almost seven months despite the grant of expedited review—an indication that the result was likely not easily reached. In June 2024, the Court, voting five to four, reversed the Second …
