The Equitability Of Virtual Public High School Education In Urban School District, Carissa Jury
The Equitability Of Virtual Public High School Education In Urban School District, Carissa Jury
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Virtual education has become an integral component of modern high school education, particularly in urban districts where diverse student populations require flexible and equitable learning environments. This qualitative study explores the equitability of virtual public high school education in an urban school district, focusing on accessibility, student experiences, and policy implications. Using social constructivism and ecological systems' theory as theoretical frameworks, this research investigates factors influencing equitable outcomes, including access to technology, teacher and community support, and socioeconomic status. Data was collected through structured interviews and focus groups with students and parents engaged in virtual education. Key findings indicate that …
Understanding The Experiences Of Online Learners In Postsecondary Education: A Phenomenological Study, Tara Woyton
Understanding The Experiences Of Online Learners In Postsecondary Education: A Phenomenological Study, Tara Woyton
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Online education has expanded access to postsecondary education learning opportunities, yet attrition rates remain disproportionately high compared to traditional, in-person education. This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of seven students who did not persist in their online education at a postsecondary institution, with the goal of identifying barriers to retention and potential strategies for improvement. The study applies Expectancy-Value Theory as a theoretical framework, examining how students’ expectancy beliefs, perceived task value, and perceived costs influenced their motivation and lack of persistence in online learning environments. Using qualitative data collection methods, including questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this study …
Factors Influencing Former State Ffa Officers To Forego Careers In Agriculture: A Qualitative Study, Shelby R. Atwood
Factors Influencing Former State Ffa Officers To Forego Careers In Agriculture: A Qualitative Study, Shelby R. Atwood
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explores the factors influencing former State FFA Officers' decisions to pursue careers outside agricultural education and the broader agricultural industry. Despite their deep engagement with the National FFA Organization and exposure to numerous agricultural career opportunities, many former officers do not transition into related professions. Guided by the expectancy-value theory, this research investigates the personal experiences, perceptions, and external factors that shape their career choices. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with former Kentucky State FFA Officers, focusing on their motivations, barriers, and overall perspectives on agricultural careers. Key findings revealed that practical considerations, personal growth, leadership …
Assessing The Behavioral And Health Effects Of Turtle Racing On Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), Michelle Weaver
Assessing The Behavioral And Health Effects Of Turtle Racing On Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), Michelle Weaver
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
To make informed management decisions regarding box turtles (Terrapene spp.) and other turtle species, one must understand what influences them at multiple levels of biological organization. Common influences include the pet trade, urbanization, habitat degradation, and disease. One factor that has not been studied but could influence turtles at multiple levels of biological organization is turtle racing. It is common practice to use wild caught turtles at these events because there is a lack of regulation and enforcement. My study focused on evaluating the effects of turtle racing on eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina; hereafter EBTs) …

The Impact Of Key Audit Matters On Earnings Quality: The Moderating Role Of Ownership Structure In Egyptian Listed Companies., Dina Hassouna, Rasha Elhaddad, Rasha Elbolok
Business Administration
This study investigates the influence of key audit matters (KAMs) on earnings quality, measured by earnings per share (EPS), in Egyptian listed companies, with a particular focus on the moderating role of ownership structure. To address potential endogeneity concerns, the study employs the generalized method of moments (GMM) for panel data analysis. The findings indicate that KAM disclosures have a significant negative impact on EPS, suggesting that increased disclosure of critical audit matters is associated with a decline in earnings quality. However, this relationship is moderated by ownership structure, as concentrated ownership helps mitigate the adverse effects of KAMs on …

Imputation Methods Based On Cluster‑Wise Linear Regression: A Mathematical Programming, Ahmed M. Gad Prof, Mahmoud Mostafa Rashwan, Nouran M. Tawheed
Business Administration
In some applications, datasets may form several homogeneous clusters with respect to the relationship between the explanatory variables and the response variable. The presence of missing values in such datasets requires the use of two or more regression models subjected to a single objective function, which best summarizes the structure of the dataset, for imputing the missing values. This can be done using the cluster-wise linear regression model. The cluster-wise linear regression model is estimated through a mathematical programming approach based on the available data. Three imputation methods based on cluster-wise linear regression are used in this article. They are …

Business Administration
Dairy farm records are a crucial component of effective livestock business management. Record analysis allows a farm’s owner to make informed decisions. Incomplete records are less useful for data analysis, so it's important to handle missing values correctly. This study compares different imputation methods for handling missing values in a dataset of dairy records comprising 997 records collected from 234 cows between 2012 and 2022. The dataset was screened against records with missing values and then deleted, resulting in 858 observations from 200 animals. There were missing values in two variables, with a missing percentage of 13.9%: days in milk …
Black Love, Media Portrayals, And Social Identity, Nigel M. Taylor
Black Love, Media Portrayals, And Social Identity, Nigel M. Taylor
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
This dissertation explores how media stereotypes about Black relationships influence Black individuals' perceptions, shaping their understanding and expectations of love. Using social identity theory as a foundation, a mixed-methods approach integrates both qualitative and quantitative methods to examine the impact of media portrayals on self-concept and relationship expectations. The quantitative findings investigate connections between media exposure, self-esteem, and partner preferences, revealing how media shapes ideas about ideal relationships and internalized racial dynamics. The qualitative analysis identifies seven themes that define Black Love and seven themes that depict media stereotypes of Black relationships. The study shows that while media often reinforce …
Cybersecurity Training As Risk Communication: A Theory-Informed Model Of Employee Learning And Behavior Change, Daniel Chaney
Cybersecurity Training As Risk Communication: A Theory-Informed Model Of Employee Learning And Behavior Change, Daniel Chaney
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Cybersecurity threats like phishing remain a persistent and costly challenge for organizations. Despite widespread corporate cybersecurity training (CCT) programs, many fail to produce lasting behavior change. This dissertation introduces the Training Knowledge Flow (TKF) Model to assess why such efforts often fall short. Grounded in communication theory, risk messaging, and adult learning principles, the TKF Model conceptualizes cybersecurity training as a staged process of learning, application, and behavioral adaptation. The model includes three phases: (1) Employee as Learner, focusing on message clarity and cognitive engagement; (2) Employee as Practitioner, assessing workplace transfer and training relevance; and (3) Employee …

Addressing The "Hidden Crisis" In Doctoral Education: Identifying The (De)Motivating Effects Of Memorable Messages From A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Alexis A. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
Although PhD students are academically capable, they paradoxically produce alarmingly high attrition rates. For several years, retention rates in PhD programs have averaged between 40% and 70% (Ames et al., 2018; Bowen & Rudenstine, 1992; Cochran et al., 2014; Gardner & GoPaul, 2012; Lovitts, 2001; Rockinson-Szapkiw & Spaulding, 2012). Scholars have presented several potential reasons that PhD students discontinue their studies, none of which include academic ability (Lovitts, 2001; Tucker, 1964; Sverdlick et al., 2018). Framed by self-determination theory (SDT), this study explores the social and communicative components of the doctoral education system by the psychological impact of memorable messages …

"The Lgbtq Community, That's My New Church": An Examination Of Lgbtq+ Former Church Members' Experiences Of Religious Exit, Samantha N. Pfeiffer
Theses and Dissertations--Communication
This study examines the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals who previously attended Independent Fundamentalist Baptist (IFB) churches, considering their experiences of being in the church, leaving the church, and rebuilding outside of the church. It also examines sermons from IFB churches that addressed topics related to the LGBTQ+ community to examine the teachings these individuals received while in the church. My examination of this topic was based in scholarly literature addressing the rhetoric of church sermons, the process and experience of religious disaffiliation, and Weick’s (1995) theory of organizational sensemaking. I used multiple qualitative methods in this study, including qualitative content …
Spaced Learning Approaches To Attitude Change: Impressions Of Individuals, Outgroup Prejudice, And Policy Endorsement, Emily Grace Ritchie
Spaced Learning Approaches To Attitude Change: Impressions Of Individuals, Outgroup Prejudice, And Policy Endorsement, Emily Grace Ritchie
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
How does the schedule of information delivery influence attitude change? While decades of research highlights the cognitive benefits of spaced learning for memory, little is known about whether these same principles extend to the domain of persuasion— particularly for socially meaningful or politically charged attitudes. This dissertation bridges cognitive and social psychological approaches by investigating whether spacing persuasive content over time enhances its ability to revise attitudes. Across three empirical chapters, I test the effects of spaced versus massed presentation of new information on evaluative judgements in three distinct domains: person impressions, social group attitudes, and policy support. In Chapter …

Master's Projects
Accurate land use classification is the backbone for urban planning. But with poor quality satellite images, varied landscapes and structures which are changing faster than ever, it becomes a challenge to define clear boundaries and hence to urban planning. This research explores the application of deep-learning model for land use classification and asses the suitability of the land. The proposed model combines a multi-scale U-Net architecture with Transformer blocks applied on a multi-spectral satellite images that improves the semantic segmentation greatly across the urban and rural regions. Additionally, a patch-wise segmentation is applied to overcome the common problem of feature …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is inherently therapy resistant due to cancer cell-stroma crosstalk across several signaling pathways. Among these, the LIF/LIFR axis has been implicated in cancer cell and cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) crosstalk. We evaluated the efficacy of EC359, a competitive inhibitor of LIFR, in combination with gemcitabine. EC359 reduced tumor burden by 90% compared to controls and by 55% compared to gemcitabine alone in cancer cell and CAFs co-implannation model. The RNA-seq analysis revealed a significant alteration in extracellular matrix components, stemness, microtubule assembly, and immune response, suggesting simultaneous targeting of cancer cell-intrinsic and stroma-mediated mechanisms by EC359. In …

A 4-year-old nonverbal autistic female presented to the clinic with a 3-month history of a persistent, inflamed papular rash, which was violaceous to skin-toned, verrucous, and dome-shaped with crateriform ulcerations on an erythematous base localized in the perianal region. A dermatologic condition with these characteristics, location, and demographic warrants a thorough workup, physical exam, and broad differential diagnosis. The clinical appearance of these lesions can mimic many cutaneous conditions in this age group and requires careful attention for potential signs of abuse. As demonstrated in our case, with a comprehensive patient history, a biopsy, and a culture of the lesions, …

I Roll To Attack The King: An Examination Of Far-Right Dissent And Ttrpgs In The Contemporary Age, Jenna C. Johnston
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Far-right ideologies have become more prevalent, both in the political sphere as well as fictional and fantasy spaces. This project analyzes the rise of far-right ideology within tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) and offers potential reasons as to why this shift is occurring. Through the analysis of three Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaigns from TTRPG show Dimension 20, combined with psychological and sociological research, this work highlights the importance of actions within TTRPGs and their impact on our actual reality. Many may act within the confines of fantastical worlds such as TTRPGs in a way that aligns with far-right ideology because …

Seeing Her, Wanting Her: Postfeminist Desire And Its Contradictions In Zendaya’S Magazine Covers, Sophia Shelley
Seeing Her, Wanting Her: Postfeminist Desire And Its Contradictions In Zendaya’S Magazine Covers, Sophia Shelley
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
This article examines Zendaya’s modelling evolution as a case study to explore how a postfeminist critique and psychoanalysis can illuminate the contradictory nature of women’s advertising. My analysis compares Zendaya’s covers in Seventeen (2012) and Essence (2020), emphasizing the stark differences in aesthetics, where Seventeen conforms to ideals of (white) femininity, and in opposition, Essence centres around Black femininity and desire. By situating Zendaya as both a gendered and racialized ‘other,’ the intricate dynamics of femininity, race, and age in media portrayals are made visible. I argue that Zendaya’s image is sold through postfeminist ideals of empowerment, choice, and sexuality …

Effects Of Added Vestibular Noise On Blindfolded Locomotor Veering, Russell J. Carmichael, Allison Sam, Philip K. Schot Phd
International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities
BACKGROUND: Nearly every fundamentally healthy human, regardless of fitness, age, or gender is incapable of walking in a perfectly straight line when visual information is removed. This is known as veering. Many different potential causes have been examined, but the most persuasive explanation is that without visual input, sensory interference (or noise) accumulates and causes random motor output errors. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine veering behavior during blindfolded walking when added vestibular noise (vibration) was applied to the skull at select locations. METHODS: A handheld massager attached at the top of the head or over one …

The National Firearms Act Is An Unconstitutional Tax, Charles K. Eldred
The National Firearms Act Is An Unconstitutional Tax, Charles K. Eldred
Wyoming Law Review
The National Firearms Act (NFA) regulates certain firearms (most importantly, short-barreled rifles and suppressors) under the taxing power. The Supreme Court upheld it as such in the 1930s. But those precedents are subject to attack under Heller and Bruen, since the NFA taxes the exercise of constitutional rights the earlier precedents did not recognize—and does so without any historical precedent. Moreover, consideration of rarely considered limitations on the taxing power that the Supreme Court reaffirmed in Sebelius leads to the conclusion that several provisions of the NFA violate the taxing power, independent of any Second Amendment concerns. In sum, the …
