The Ripple Effects Of Microaggressions: Understanding Employee Responses And The Moderating Role Of Racial Representation At Work, Tyleen Lopez Jan 2025

The Ripple Effects Of Microaggressions: Understanding Employee Responses And The Moderating Role Of Racial Representation At Work, Tyleen Lopez

Wayne State University Dissertations

Despite the advancement of research on microaggressions, their impact on employees’ emotional well-being and behavior remains unclear (Fattoracci & King, 2023). In response, I examine the associations between microaggressions, hurt feelings, and counterproductive work behaviors (i.e., withdrawal and production deviance). Additionally, I consider racial representation as a potential moderator. Drawing upon social identity theory, social categorization theory, and the Stressor-Emotion Model, I argue that microaggressions lead to hurt feelings, prompting employees to engage in counterproductive work behaviors as a coping mechanism (Tajfel & Turner, 1979; Tajfel et al., 1971; Spector & Fox, 2005). Furthermore, I argue that the positive indirect …

Centering Sisterhood: An Exploration Of Black Mothers’ Wellness Experiences Through A Group Therapy Intervention, Kimberly Stokes

Wayne State University Dissertations

The brilliance of Black mothers has centered their community’s progression and perseverance for centuries. Yet, most of the psychological research is either absent or promotes a deficit-framing of their experiences. In the present study, I use critical qualitative methodology to center the wellness experiences of Black mothers through analyzing a group therapy intervention entitled, Invincible Black Women. I aimed to promote strength-based, holistic research and practice for Black mothers. The research questions guiding this study focused on group participants’ definitions and applications of care practices as well as the role of mothering as explained in group therapy sessions. Sessions were …

Poverty, Fresh Starts, And The Social Safety Net, Michelle Lyon Drumbl Jan 2025

Poverty, Fresh Starts, And The Social Safety Net, Michelle Lyon Drumbl

Scholarly Articles

For decades low-income families have relied on the filing of individual income tax returns to claim critical social welfare benefits in the form of refundable tax credits, most notably the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit. But what happens to those families when the social safety net is not enough to meet their financial obligations, and they must seek a fresh start by filing for bankruptcy?

This Article, at the intersection of tax law, bankruptcy law, and the social safety net, examines the ways in which state bankruptcy laws treat refundable tax credits when an individual debtor …

Identifying The Guilty, Protecting The Innocent: Amending The Federal Rules Of Evidence To Address Admissibility Of Eyewitness Identification, Louisa M. A. Heiny Jan 2025

Identifying The Guilty, Protecting The Innocent: Amending The Federal Rules Of Evidence To Address Admissibility Of Eyewitness Identification, Louisa M. A. Heiny

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Mistaken eyewitness identification is among the most common factors in wrongful conviction cases. Indeed, hundreds of innocent defendants have been convicted for a crime they did not commit, their fate sealed by an eyewitness who convincingly, but mistakenly, testified, “That’s the one!”

Scientific researchers have documented the fallibility of eyewitness identification for decades. Their collective work has produced recommendations for eyewitness identification reform, focusing on procedural problems most likely to result in mistaken identification. The law in this area, however, has not kept pace with the science. Rather than representing a cohesive series of safeguards against inaccurate eyewitness identifications, federal …

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

The increasing integration of technology into daily life has provided numerous benefits but also significant risks, particularly when exploited by malicious actors in cases of technology facilitated abuse (TFA). Per- petrators can misuse technology to monitor, control, and intimidate their partners, random strangers, etc. exacerbating cycles of abuse. From location tracking and cellphone surveillance to smart device manipula- tion, spyware, and doxing, digital tools have become powerful instruments for coercion and control. This research project investigates the role of technology in stalking and harassment by analyzing discussions on a relevant subreddit where victims share their experiences, strategies for coping, and …

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework For Sequential Art Creation, Asmin Pothula Jan 2025

A Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework For Sequential Art Creation, Asmin Pothula

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Most computational art systems rely on generative models that produce a complete artwork in a single pass, without capturing the gradual, decision-driven process through which human artists construct visual pieces. Prior research in sequential, stroke-based image generation, including differentiable neural painters and model-based reinforcement learning agents, has explored step-by-step creation, but these systems typically aim to reconstruct the input image within the same visual representation space, closely matching brushstrokes, textures, or colors to the target. In contrast, this thesis investigates sequential art creation in a different artistic representation, where the final artwork does not share the same visual form as …

Scalable Approaches Towards Characterizing And Mitigating Emerging Phishing Scams, Sayak Saha Roy Jan 2025

Scalable Approaches Towards Characterizing And Mitigating Emerging Phishing Scams, Sayak Saha Roy

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Phishing scams are among the most dangerous and persistent forms of cybercrime, leveraging social engineering to exploit human behavior and obtain sensitive information, leading to widespread identity theft and data breaches. In the past year, these attacks have resulted in financial losses exceeding $10 billion in the United States alone. As phishing scams continue to evolve, they have not only expanded in scale but also grown in sophistication, spreading rapidly across social media and employing adversarial techniques to evade detection by anti-scam tools. The situation is further exacerbated by the availability of advanced phishing kits, and more recently, generative AI, …

Phase-Field Modeling Of A Protective Layer For The Suppression Of Dendrites In Metallic Anode-Based Rechargeable Batteries, Bharat R. Pant Jan 2025

Phase-Field Modeling Of A Protective Layer For The Suppression Of Dendrites In Metallic Anode-Based Rechargeable Batteries, Bharat R. Pant

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Metallic anodes, such as Lithium (Li) and Zinc (Zn), offer promise for the development of high-capacity rechargeable batteries. However, metallic anode-based batteries suffer from severe dendrite growth during the plating process, which poses safety hazards and accelerates capacity degradation. Experimental studies suggest that using a protective coating on the anode surface could potentially mitigate dendrite growth and prolong the battery’s life. However, there are limited theoretical studies on the inhibition effect of a protective layer on dendrite growth. Herein, we developed a phase-field model to simulate the impact of a protective layer on the plating and stripping cycle for Li …

To enable adaptive operation in EWOD systems, a deep learning model (U-Net) was developed for real-time droplet meniscus segmentation. The model achieved 98% accuracy and remained robust under noisy, low-contrast conditions. A live video pipeline was implemented, enabling consistent frame-by-frame feedback for closed-loop control. Together, these innovations establish a foundation for autonomous, high-performance …

Deep Neural Network Models For Heatsink Performance Prediction And Optimization In Single Phase Immersion Cooling: Framework For Future Design Tools And Digital Twin Integration, Braxton J. Smith Jan 2025

Deep Neural Network Models For Heatsink Performance Prediction And Optimization In Single Phase Immersion Cooling: Framework For Future Design Tools And Digital Twin Integration, Braxton J. Smith

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The rapidly rising computational power of modern computing components combined with the advanced packaging techniques being implemented has resulted in exponentially increasing thermal design powers (TDP) from CPUs and GPUs. Traditional air-cooling methods are approaching their effective cooling limits for many of these components, requiring lower supply air temperatures, higher supply air flowrates, and much larger heatsinks to remain feasible. Transitioning from air-cooling to single-phase immersion cooling offers numerous benefits in thermal performance, data-center size reduction, and energy efficiency. To leverage the merits of immersion cooling, the performance of a given heatsink must be predicted and optimized for best performance …

Animal Triangulation – Expanding The Oppressed/Oppressor Binary To A Triadic Constituency: The Oppressor, The Proxy, And The Oppressed, Katherine A. Abelanet Jan 2025

Animal Triangulation – Expanding The Oppressed/Oppressor Binary To A Triadic Constituency: The Oppressor, The Proxy, And The Oppressed, Katherine A. Abelanet

English Dissertations - Archive

Drawing on three fields of study, Animal Studies, Black Studies, and Shakespeare Studies, this dissertation examines animal triangulation as a system of oppression in which three constituents are triangulated for the benefit of the oppressor. Through triangulation, the oppressed/oppressor duality expands, creating a triad: the oppressor, the proxy, and the oppressed. This reimagining of the traditional binary of oppression opens new areas of conversation by adding an additional component. In animal triangulation, a proxy is created when an oppressor trains an animal or an animalized human to produce an abusive outcome on an oppressed group. By using a proxy, the …

Finding Our Way: Three Studies On The Evolving Role Of Arts Nonprofits In Contemporary Society, Trevor Meagher Jan 2025

Finding Our Way: Three Studies On The Evolving Role Of Arts Nonprofits In Contemporary Society, Trevor Meagher

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Arts nonprofits play vital roles in defining the character of a community. However, our collective relationship with these organizations is evolving. This article-based dissertation leverages mixed methods to explore arts nonprofits’ evolving relationship with society.

The first article conceptually analyzes historical trends in arts advocacy in the United States. It explores how the arguments organizational supporters make in the hopes of securing financial and public support have developed and shifted in popularity over the past half-century. These streams are thematically connected through an emphasis on utilitarianism and value-extraction, and they have historically been employed in almost completely static proportion to …

Institutional Pressures And Nonprofit Executive Burnout: A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Organizational Culture And Leadership Sustainability In Texas, Lenita R. Dunlap Phd Jan 2025

Institutional Pressures And Nonprofit Executive Burnout: A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Organizational Culture And Leadership Sustainability In Texas, Lenita R. Dunlap Phd

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Abstract

Nonprofit leader burnout represents a critical challenge threatening organizational sustainability and mission effectiveness across the nonprofit sector. Rather than an individual failing or isolated organizational pathology, burnout emerges as a systemic phenomenon embedded within institutional forces that operate across the nonprofit field. This mixed-methods examination employs a statewide Texas sample to capture institutional field-level dynamics that operate across municipal and regional boundaries, recognizing that nonprofit organizational fields transcend local contexts through statewide funding networks, professional associations, and regulatory environments that create coherent institutional pressures (DiMaggio & Powell, 1983). While research demonstrates that high work demands and resource constraints exacerbate …

Rethinking Energy Affordability: Assessing Dual Energy-Mobility Cost Burden In High-Density Multifamily Neighborhoods, Indira Manandhar Jan 2025

Rethinking Energy Affordability: Assessing Dual Energy-Mobility Cost Burden In High-Density Multifamily Neighborhoods, Indira Manandhar

Planning Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation examines dual energy-mobility affordability from an equity perspective in high-density multifamily neighborhoods across nine U.S. cities. Traditional energy cost burden metrics focus only on residential energy and overlook transportation-related costs, obscuring how housing-related energy consumption and mobility costs jointly affect affordability for low-income and rent-stressed renters. This approach reflects the ongoing cost of maintaining everyday access rather than housing-related energy consumption costs alone. This study develops and applies a transferable, multicity block-group dual-energy mobility cost Burden (DECB) framework that integrates housing-related energy consumption costs with mobility costs into a composite indicator based on cost-to-income ratios and low-income/high-cost (LIHC) …

Warring Identities: The Transition From Servicemember To Civilian Employee, Michael Beeson Jan 2025

Warring Identities: The Transition From Servicemember To Civilian Employee, Michael Beeson

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation explores the role that military service identity plays in the transition to civilian employment. While there is a large volume of research on both the servicemember transition out of the military and military service identity, this dissertation contributes to this literature by examining the intersection of military service identity and the transition to civilian employment. This dissertation is designed to examine the nature of the military identity as servicemembers separate from the military and transition to civilian employment using competing theoretical identity frameworks rooted in identity and social identity theories. First I conduct a survey study that examines …

Navigating Compliance: How Wage Theft Influences Warn Act Decisions, Roberto Gonzales Jan 2025

Navigating Compliance: How Wage Theft Influences Warn Act Decisions, Roberto Gonzales

Accounting Dissertations - Archive

Economic theory suggests that firms comply with regulations when the expected costs of noncompliance outweigh the expected benefits (Becker 1968). Despite minimal enforcement, weak penalties, and strong incentives for noncompliance, some firms comply with the provisions of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, which mandates advance notice of mass layoffs and plant closings. Using a sample of 7,084 firm-years necessitating WARN Act disclosures from 2000 to 2020, I reassess the cost-benefit calculus by first demonstrating that wage theft violations provide the incentives necessary to compel firms to comply with other minimally enforced laws like WARN. Next, I find …

Biology Faculty Works

For aquatic and semi-aquatic vertebrates like amphibians, it is possible to estimate excreted hormone levels using non-invasive methods such as waterborne and salivary sampling. These techniques allow monitoring of endocrine activity over varying, repeated and simultaneous integration periods while minimizing handling-related stress that can ‘contaminate’ hormone estimates, including estimates of baseline glucocorticoids. Here we have validated the extraction and quantification of three steroid hormones (corticosterone, CORT; 17-b estradiol, E₂; testosterone, TST) in Couch’s spadefoots (Scaphiopus couchii)—a desert-adapted anuran of special interest for physiology, evolution and conservation—using non-invasive waterborne and minimally invasive salivary hormone methods. We combined extraction and …

Thin Blue Advantage: Police Exceptionalism and the Two-Tier System of Public Sector Collective Bargaining

Police and non-police bargaining units are treated differently in New Jersey, and the difference in treatment is reflected in statutes, case law, and Public Employment Relations Commission decisions. While the Commission is consistently more favorable to police unions, its decisions are often inconsistent, unpredictable, and made in spite of conflicting precedent.

· Commission Membership. The composition of the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission is disproportionately representative of unions.

· Poor Quality Decisions. The Commission’s decisions are often inconsistent, unpredictable, and made in spite of conflicting precedent.

· Impasse Procedures Favor Police Units. Police units must submit their negotiating impasses …

Thin Blue Advantage: Police Exceptionalism and the Two-Tier System of Public Sector Collective Bargaining

There are not enough cases from the Alaska commission to draw general conclusions about the commission’s treatment of mandatory subjects of bargaining in police and non-police contexts. In the cases discussed below, the commission typically found that the employer’s interests outweighed the employees’ interests, with a slight preference to find bargaining subjects mandatory in the police context.
