The Problem With “More Is Better”: An Assessment Of The “New” Contract Grading, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Articles and Research

In this article I discuss some of the issues that scholars are and aren’t writing about in relation to the recent resurgence in contract grading, and reflect on my own experience using contract grading in composition and other classes. I come to the topic as a scholar and university teacher in rhetoric and composition, though my discussion certainly is relevant to teachers in many disciplines and institution types. My aim is to offer an analysis of the benefits and drawback of the “new” contract grading, with special attention to what I call the “more is better” mantra that informs many …

There is a lot of literature discussing burnout, training that exists to help leaders combat leadership burnout and resources that uplift self-care practices. However, very few talk about student leadership burnout, the harm burnout can cause student leaders, and how to prevent burnout from occurring. This workshop aimed to examine how student leaders can utilize selfcare practices through intentional planning and boundary setting to prevent student leadership burnout from happening to care for oneself while caring for others with a focus on prevention work. Although everything discussed and shared throughout this workshop can be used to recover from burnout, the …

Assessing The Impact Of Financial, Educational, And Managerial Resources On The Success Of Minority-Owned Businesses: An Analysis Of Resources From The Perspective Of The Minority Business Owner, Clinton B. Arnold Jan 2025

Assessing The Impact Of Financial, Educational, And Managerial Resources On The Success Of Minority-Owned Businesses: An Analysis Of Resources From The Perspective Of The Minority Business Owner, Clinton B. Arnold

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Minority-owned businesses (MOBs) in the United States have a failure rate that is 50% higher than that of their non-minority counterparts. Rectifying this imbalance and achieving parity could yield significant economic benefits, potentially adding $1.5 trillion to the nation's economy if resources—financial, educational, and managerial—are equitably distributed and effectively made available to support the goals of minority businesses. However, historical injustices, from Jim Crow laws to systemic discrimination, have granted certain groups multi-generational advantages, exacerbating the divide. Addressing these disparities is both an economic imperative and a moral obligation to ensure equal opportunity. Lending Tree (2023)

With 1.2 million MOBs …

Adding Therapy Codes To Psychiatric Medication Management Appointments, Sarah Kurash Jan 2025

Adding Therapy Codes To Psychiatric Medication Management Appointments, Sarah Kurash

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Abstract

Psychotherapy is an integral part of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) scope of practice. However, gaps in use of this skill have been identified among PMHNPs providing medication management services. Lack of use of this skill can contribute to lack of resources in mental health and overall burden. A quality improvement project was implemented at a small psychiatric telehealth practice using an evidence-based approach. Using a quasi-experimental quantitative approach with measurement of pre and post intervention self-efficacy scores and use of therapy add-on billing codes, six PMHNPs (n=6) met criteria to participate in the intervention. The Therapist …

Regulation Of Human Il-9 Production By Lipid Metabolism, Swetha Peesari Jan 2025

Regulation Of Human Il-9 Production By Lipid Metabolism, Swetha Peesari

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

T lymphocytes contribute to host defense and inflammation producing cytokines in response to antigenic stimuli. CD4 T cell activation induces dramatic changes to cellular metabolism for supporting their growth and differentiation into effector subsets. Distinct subsets have been named Th1, Th2, Th9, Th17, Th22, Tfh and Treg based on their characteristic effector cytokines and transcription factors expressed. Th9 cells are one of the most recent subsets identified. While the cytokines IL-4, TGF-β and IL-21 promote differentiation into Th9 cells, metabolic factors regulating this process remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that lipid metabolism could regulate Th9 cell differentiation which may have …

Beyond The Screen: Assessing The Impact Of Hospitalist Reliance On Electronic Medical Records In Patient-Centered Care, Brian H. Cox Jan 2025

Beyond The Screen: Assessing The Impact Of Hospitalist Reliance On Electronic Medical Records In Patient-Centered Care, Brian H. Cox

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The integration of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems has transformed healthcare delivery, offering enhanced data accessibility, improved communication, and operational efficiency. However, concerns persist regarding the potential erosion of patient-centered care due to EMR overutilization. This study investigated how hospitalists’ use of EMR systems correlates with patient satisfaction, focusing on the dynamics of physician communication, hospital length of stay, and regional characteristics. Using a comprehensive framework combining Resource Dependency Theory and Donabedian’s Structure-Process-Outcome model, the research examines the influence of demographic, technological, and structural factors on healthcare outcomes.

The analysis, based on patient survey data from a large integrated delivery …

Racial Preference As A Moderator In The Match-Alliance Relationship: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Indian Immigrants, Sarika Agarwal M.S. Jan 2025

Racial Preference As A Moderator In The Match-Alliance Relationship: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Indian Immigrants, Sarika Agarwal M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Patient preferences are defined as a patient’s desire for specific behaviors or attributes of the therapist or therapy (Arnkoff et al., 2002). Psychotherapy patients may hold a preference for a same-race therapist due to their perception that the therapist is similar to themselves, which may positively affect the therapeutic alliance (Cabral & Smith, 2011). However, since previous research has found mixed results on the positive effects of racial matching in psychotherapy (Cheng et al., 2023), another possible angle to examine the effects of racial matching on the therapeutic alliance is by taking patient preference into account. While data is limited …

Medicare Mandates For Shared Decision Making With Patient Decision Aids: Linking Payment To Preference, Thaddeus Mason Pope, Jd, Phd Jan 2025

Medicare Mandates For Shared Decision Making With Patient Decision Aids: Linking Payment To Preference, Thaddeus Mason Pope, Jd, Phd

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Since 2015, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has increasingly required shared decision making with evidence-based patient decision aids as an essential Medicare condition for payment. CMS is doing this because it recognizes that most healthcare is preference sensitive and value laden. So, whether treatment is “right” or “beneficial” for a patient is not only a matter of clinical expertise. It equally depends on the patient’s values, preferences, and goals. So, CMS wants to ensure that patients understand the risks, benefits, and alternatives to the healthcare that they receive and for which CMS pays. In short, under its …

Reducing Discrimination In Organ Transplant Candidacy Evaluation Against Persons Who Use Drugs, Hannah Rahim, Bhsc Jan 2025

Reducing Discrimination In Organ Transplant Candidacy Evaluation Against Persons Who Use Drugs, Hannah Rahim, Bhsc

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Many organ transplant centers deny persons who use drugs eligibility for receiving a transplant because of concerns about the impact of drugs on transplant success. These policies are often not based on sufficient medical evidence and are highly variable between transplant centers. Restricting persons who use drugs from organ transplantation can exacerbate existing racial and geographic inequities in access to organ transplantation. This paper explores discrimination against persons who use drugs in organ transplantation. I examine when considering a patient’s drug use in organ transplant eligibility assessment is illegal and when it is immoral and I offer recommendations for statutory, …

Shortness Of Breath In A 39 Year Old: A Rare Case Of Heart Failure, Mohammed Rashik, Olufunmilola Adeleye, Jason Thompson, Tasaduq Mir

North Texas Research Forum 2025

Currently, 2.6% of Americans suffer from heart failure. Common causes include coronary artery disease, chronic hypertension, arrhythmia, and myocardial infarction, often managed in clinical and hospital settings. A rare cause, however, is infiltrative cardiomyopathy, affecting just 0.04% of the U.S. population. This condition, often caused by amyloid buildup or sarcoidosis, is challenging to diagnose and typically requires a heart transplant due to its rapid progression. Thorough investigations into heart failure causes are crucial to identify this rare condition. A 39-year-old male with no significant medical history presented to the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) Family Medicine clinic …

The Birth Experience During The First Wave Of Covid-19 Lockdown In New York Hospitals: A Qualitative Study, Emily Morse Small M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

In 2020, alongside the onset of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, 209,338 births occurred in New York State (Osterman et al., 2022). While much of the public adjusted to working or learning in a virtual world, many hospitals in New York remained open to treat those in need of care. Women nearing the end of their pregnancy, many of whom felt that they had no other choice, found themselves headed to the hospital—to the labor and delivery unit. Many studies completed outside of the United States on the birth experience during the pandemic found an increase in the likelihood of negative …
