Reproductive Autonomy In Immunological Intervention: Ethical Boundaries In Maternal-Fetal Immune Therapy, Marium Z. Rizvi Jan 2025

Reproductive Autonomy In Immunological Intervention: Ethical Boundaries In Maternal-Fetal Immune Therapy, Marium Z. Rizvi

Journal of Health Ethics

Recent advances in immunology have broken barriers in reproductive medicine through immune-modulating therapies that support fertility and pregnancy. Treatments such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) and intralipid infusions are increasingly offered to patients with Recurrent Implantation Failure (RIF) or Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL), conditions that result in miscarriages and failed IVF treatments (Pillarysetti et al., 2023). Maternal-fetal immunology reveals a delicate interplay between immune tolerance and defense: the maternal system must accept a genetically foreign fetus while preserving immunological protection. Disruptions in this balance are implicated in implantation disorders and pregnancy failure. As a result, immune-based therapies have emerged as promising …

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck Jan 2025

Insurrection And Black Political Participation, Brandon Hasbrouck

Scholarly Articles

The Reconstruction Congress envisioned a comprehensive set of rights and structural protections in the Fourteenth Amendment to establish and preserve a multiracial democracy. The Fourteenth Amendment’s third section, the Insurrection Clause, may seldom have been enforced in recent memory, but it remains a vital part of the Amendment’s framework. The Insurrection Clause bars any state or federal government official who participates in a rebellion or insurrection after taking an oath to support the Constitution from serving in such a position again. In Trump v. Anderson, the Supreme Court was given a choice to either enforce the Insurrection Clause’s protection …

Dobbs And The New Doctrine Of Stare Decisis, Russell A. Miller Jan 2025

Dobbs And The New Doctrine Of Stare Decisis, Russell A. Miller

Scholarly Articles

Alongside the historic and troubling annulment of the half-century-old Substantive Due Process right to abortion, Dobbs produced another significant outcome. To get its substantive constitutional law result, the Court’s majority also had to reconceive—and significantly weaken—the doctrine of stare decisis. This was necessary because, following Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, the constitutional right to abortion largely depended on respect for precedent as the basis for its survival. To overturn Roe, the Dobbs majority had to blast through the established practice of precedent and articulate a new doctrine of stare decisis. It seems that precedent was meant to …

Is Suicide Among The Elderly Population Warranted Or Preventable, Ericka King

CSU Tower Day

Tower Day 2025 Undergraduate Poster 2nd place Winner

Growing old is perceived differently among world cultures. In some cultures, elders are revered and celebrated. However, in other cultures, growing old is dreaded and feared. Current Western culture depicts aging negatively through media, beauty marketing, and in general society. The elderly population is also a lost population as they are often forgotten about and overlooked. With aging comes with illness, depression, change in activities of daily living, financial stressors, isolation, societal changes, and death of loved ones, and eventually self. Chronic illness(es) can make it harder for the elderly to maintain …

Occupational Therapist's Role In Sensory Inclusive Space Design, Colleen Mcgill

SURF Posters 2025

The rise in individuals experiencing sensory processing difficulties has revealed the challenges they face in regard to engagement in different environments and social participation. Sensory processing difficulties can impact the individual's social connectedness to entertainment venues that confine larger crowds and overwhelming stimuli, causing a form of occupational deprivation. This form of occupational deprivation can not only affect the individual, but can also impact family interactions at social events. Occupational therapists have proven highly skilled when assessing and treating clients with sensory processing difficulties, as well as evaluating and adapting environments to promote successful participation. With that, there is a …

Exploring The Current State Of Student Success At Historically Black College And University Libraries, Harvey Long, Sarah N. Hernandez Jan 2025

Exploring The Current State Of Student Success At Historically Black College And University Libraries, Harvey Long, Sarah N. Hernandez

Library Faculty Scholarship

This book chapter investigates how academic librarians at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) define and contribute to student success, offering a perspective often underrepresented in library and information science literature. Drawing on a national survey of HBCU librarians, the authors explore how these professionals interpret student success both institutionally and personally, revealing tensions between traditional metrics—such as retention and graduation rates—and more holistic, empowerment-based frameworks. The study highlights the diverse, often under-recognized ways HBCU librarians support students, including information literacy instruction, mentorship, and emotional support. It also critiques the limitations of graduate LIS education in preparing librarians for culturally …

Litigating Landlessness: The U.S. Department Of The Interior And First Circuit Court’S Appropriations Of Self-Governance And Socialism In Puerto Rico, 1934-52, Carmen Lopez Villamil

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

In 1946, three Boston judges decided that the Puerto Rican legislature could redistribute American-owned sugar plantations to workers. Though deemed legal, the redistribution never happened. The unreported 1946 land rights case, People of Puerto Rico v. Eastern Sugar Associates, entangles how self-proclaimed socialist and anti-colonialist officials at the Department of the Interior administered a New Deal empire across Indigenous and island territories. In conjunction with the Department of the Interior’s published reports and Felix S. Cohen’s Papers at the Yale Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, case files from the Boston First Circuit Library reveal engagement between federal and military …

Confessions Of A Failed Revolutionary Subject: Toi Derricotte And The Black Notebooks In The Archive, Kavya Jain

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

In this essay, I use black feminist methodologies to theorize archival voice as opposed to silence, drawing from Toi Derricotte’s 1997 book The Black Notebooks: An Interior Journey and its drafts. I examine Derricotte’s published and unpublished writings on the psychological wounds of racism, internalized antiblackness, shame, and the racial and relational politics of being white-presenting to understand her vision of how we free ourselves from the toxic imaginaries of race. I focus on Derricotte’s use of confession and her commitment to wayward speech, or saying the unsayable, to challenge political ideology’s domination of language and harness the political possibility …

Class-Wise Histogram Matching-Based Domain Adaptation In Deep Learning-Based Bridge Element Segmentation, Tarutal Ghosh Mondal, Zhenhua Shi, Haibin Zhang, Genda Chen Jan 2025

Class-Wise Histogram Matching-Based Domain Adaptation In Deep Learning-Based Bridge Element Segmentation, Tarutal Ghosh Mondal, Zhenhua Shi, Haibin Zhang, Genda Chen

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study focused on the problem of domain shift in deep learning-based bridge element segmentation. The impracticability of accounting for all possible variabilities vis-à-vis structural shape, size, color, texture, illumination, and other operational conditions in the training process leads to the deterioration in the model performance when applied to test data from novel unseen domains. In such situations, rebuilding the model with labeled training data from the target domain becomes prohibitively expensive and time-consuming in many practical cases. Recent advancements in unsupervised domain adaptation techniques are known to provide viable solutions to this problem. However, it was observed in this …

The Effect Of Two Common Herbicides On The Growth And Development Of Two Anuran Species (Boreorana Sylvatica And Dryophytes Chrysoscelis), Jerica Eaton Jan 2025

The Effect Of Two Common Herbicides On The Growth And Development Of Two Anuran Species (Boreorana Sylvatica And Dryophytes Chrysoscelis), Jerica Eaton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Amphibian populations have been declining globally since the 1950s. Many species that have experienced declines are viewed as 'environmental indicators' that reveal habitat degradation. Declines can be attributed to several factors, including chemicals used in agriculture, such as Roundup and Atrazine. Agrochemicals contaminate water bodies through runoff or leaching and cause alterations to aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluated the effects of herbicide usage on two wild anuran populations using wood frogs (Boreorana sylvatica) and Cope’s gray tree frogs (Dryophytes chrysoscelis) as a model. We determined the effect of the herbicides at two concentrations, a high concentration …

Ms Environmental Biology Capstone: Evaluating Environmental Risks And Conflicts In Golf Course Landscapes, Meredith Boos

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

1) This review investigates the relationship between pesticide use on golf courses and in agriculture to determine whether the adverse health effects documented in agricultural settings also apply to golf course environments. While the negative health effects from agricultural pesticide use are well established, golf courses use pesticides with greater frequency and intensity, suggesting a potentially higher exposure risk for both workers and players.

2) This study proposes methods to quantify pesticide bioaccumulation on golf courses and adjacent lands. We hypothesize that areas surrounding golf courses will exhibit a spatial gradient of pesticide accumulation, increasing with proximity to treated sites …

Pgc-1Α Activation To Enhance Macrophage Immune Function In Mycobacterial Infections, Joel R. Frandsen, Zhihong Yuan, Brahmchetna Bedi, Zohra Prasla, Seoung-Ryoung Choi, Prabagaran Narayanasamy, Ruxana Sadikot

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are a heterogeneous group of environmental microorganisms with distinct human pathogenesis. Their incidence and prevalence are rising worldwide, due in part to elevated antimicrobial resistance which complicates treatment and potential successful outcomes. Although information exists on the clinical significance of NTMs, little is known about host immune response to infection. NTM infections alter macrophage mitochondrial capacity and decrease ATP production, efficient immune response, and bacterial clearance. Transcription factor peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α) is a master regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, influencing metabolism, mitochondrial pathways, and antioxidant response. Mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) is a …

Financial Inclusion: Access To Basic Banking, Candace Sledge

Community Engagement Student Work

Millions of Americans remain unbanked or underbanked, disproportionately impacting Black, Hispanic, and immigrant communities due to public policies and systemic barriers. In 2021, The median wealth for Black households was $24,520. Roughly one-tenth of the $250,400 median wealth held by White households (Bennett et al). The Bank On initiative was developed to address financial inclusion and access to basic banking. It provides a promising intervention by promoting low-cost, no-overdraft bank accounts certified to meet national standards (CFE Fund, 2019). While Bank On has expanded throughout the United States, questions persist about the initiative’s equity, effectiveness, and sustainability.

Technology Access, Training, And Affordability For African American Older Adults In The United States, Michelle Nettles

Community Engagement Student Work

Use of technology in the form of internet services and devices such as smartphones, desktop computers, and laptops is a critical part of modern-day society. Yet adults 65 and older struggle to use them despite the ease of access. Older adults’ disengagement with technology is often related to a lack of fundamental knowledge of hardware and/or software, associated costs, and fear of what technology use will expose them to. The purpose of this capstone project was to gain an understanding of the areas of intimidation related to technology use among older adults and the various strategies employed by organizations to …

Extracellular Adherence Proteins Reduce Matrix Porosity And Enhance Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilm Survival During Prosthetic Joint Infection, Mohini Bhattacharya, Tyler D. Scherr, Jessica Lister, Tammy Kielian, Alexander R. Horswill Jan 2025

Extracellular Adherence Proteins Reduce Matrix Porosity And Enhance Staphylococcus Aureus Biofilm Survival During Prosthetic Joint Infection, Mohini Bhattacharya, Tyler D. Scherr, Jessica Lister, Tammy Kielian, Alexander R. Horswill

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

Biofilms are a cause of chronic, non-healing infections. Staphylococcus aureus is a proficient biofilm-forming pathogen commonly isolated from prosthetic joint infections that develop following primary arthroplasty. Extracellular adherence protein (Eap), previously characterized in planktonic or non-biofilm populations as being an adhesin and immune evasion factor, was recently identified in the exoproteome of S. aureus biofilms. This work demonstrates that Eap and its two functionally orphaned homologs EapH1 and EapH2 contribute to biofilm structure and prevent macrophage invasion and phagocytosis in these communities. Biofilms unable to express Eap proteins demonstrated increased porosity and reduced biomass. We describe the role of Eap …

Creation Of A Pastor Care Team For Pacific District Mennonite Brethren Pastors, Randolf Mark Reiswig Jan 2025

Creation Of A Pastor Care Team For Pacific District Mennonite Brethren Pastors, Randolf Mark Reiswig

Doctor of Ministry

At the Redwood Mountain Grove in Kings Canyon National Park, the strength and resilience of sequoias provide a compelling example of the significance of communal interconnectedness. Despite their towering stature, these trees possess relatively shallow root systems that intertwine with neighboring trees to fortify their stability. This mutually beneficial relationship enables these giants to withstand formidable natural forces. Similarly, this paradigm offers pastors an invaluable lesson in fostering interconnections within their community as a strategy for a deeper connection. The grove’s interconnected root systems are a metaphor for the church’s vision of connectedness. It is an informative framework for pastors …
