Cultivating Consumption Of Biobased Product, Nima Nejadrezaei
Cultivating Consumption Of Biobased Product, Nima Nejadrezaei
Doctoral
Consumers play a critical role in transitioning towards bioeconomy. However, their positive attitudes and interest in biobased products often do not lead to actual usage because of the complexity of the decision-making process. Despite the bioeconomy’s importance, research on consumer behaviour regarding biobased products remains limited. This study bridged gaps by examining consumer perspectives on biobased products. It sought to identify factors influencing consumer perspectives and develop an integrative model where acceptance preceded actual use. Focusing on consumers from the Republic of Ireland, a test market with strong government commitment to the bioeconomy, private sector and research centre investments and …

Connecting Developed Pressure – Preload Relationship In Ex-Vivo Beating Heart With Cellular Sarcomere Length – Tension Relationship, Lei Fan, Vahid Ziaei-Rad, Jason Bazil, Lik Chuan Lee
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The heart’s developed pressure (DP) in Langendorff heart experiments increases with preload via the Frank-Starling mechanism up to a critical transition point at which DP starts to decrease with preload. A similar behavior is found at the cellular level, where the tension developed by skinned cardiac fibers or myocytes in isometric tension test increases with sarcomere length up to a transition point beyond which, the tension decreases. This cellular-level behavior is termed myofilament length dependent activation. While these two behaviors are similar, they occur at vastly different scales. Specifically, the DP – preload and sarcomere length – tension relationships occur, …

The demand for phosphorus (P), fueled by the need for fertilizers to increase food production due to the ever-increasing population, is increasing P in the environment and diminishing global reserves of this nonrenewable resource. Stormwater runoff transports land-applied P into surrounding waterbodies. Green infrastructure (GI) soils are being engineered to target P removal from stormwater runoff. This research investigates the potential to recover P from engineered GI soils traditionally developed to remove P, contributing to the circular P economy by considering GI as a source of recoverable P. Batch experiments were conducted to determine the P removal performance of iron- …

Characterizing Phosphorus Removal And Recovery Performance Of A 3d Printed Iron-Embedded Polylactic Acid Composite, Colin B. Wilson, Anthony J. Parolari, Andrew Hiestand, Brooke K. Mayer, Allison Murray
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Green infrastructure (GI) has been heralded as a solution for reducing phosphorus (P) pollution through increasing stormwater runoff infiltration and improving water quality. Despite its global implementation, GI struggles to improve the effluent water quality discharged from these systems consistently. This research evaluates the P removal performance and recovery potential of iron-embedded polylactic acid (PLA) composites through a novel application of three-dimensional (3D) printed representative unit cells (RUC) that could be used to improve effluent quality in GI. The RUC required chemical oxidation to convert the embedded iron to hematite (Fe2O3) to facilitate P adsorption. Batch …

Dentistry And The Law: What You Should Know About Collecting Past-Due Accounts, Daniel Schulte J.D.
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
Michigan law regulates debt collection practices for dental offices collecting past-due accounts. While practices can collect their own debts, they must follow specific restrictions regarding workplace communications. The law prohibits harassment, deceptive practices, and sharing debt information with employers or coworkers. Contact at workplaces must be discreet, civil, and cease if the patient expresses inconvenience. Communications are restricted between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m. without permission.

Watershed Land Use Decreases The Nitrogen Limitation Of Benthic Algal Growth In Coastal Wetlands Of A Large Oligotrophic Lake, Matthew J. Cooper, Michele C. Wheeler
Watershed Land Use Decreases The Nitrogen Limitation Of Benthic Algal Growth In Coastal Wetlands Of A Large Oligotrophic Lake, Matthew J. Cooper, Michele C. Wheeler
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Introduction:
Identifying patterns in the primary limiting nutrients of basal trophic levels such as benthic algae can inform the prediction of potential ecological responses to anthropogenic nutrient loading. In coastal wetlands of the Laurentian Great Lakes, reduced concentrations of reactive nitrogen species such as ammonium and nitrate may limit algal growth, especially when nutrient loading is minimal. However, the response of benthic algae to macronutrient inputs remains understudied, especially in Lake Superior coastal wetlands.
Methods:
We conducted nutrient amendment assays using nutrient diffusing substrate devices in 25 coastal wetlands along the southwestern shore of Lake Superior in the spring, summer, …

Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) catalyzes the carboxylation of pyruvate to oxaloacetate which serves as an important anaplerotic reaction to replenish citric acid cycle intermediates. In most organisms, the PC-catalyzed reaction is allosterically activated by acetyl-coenzyme A. It has previously been reported that vertebrate PC can catalyze the hydrolysis of acetyl-CoA, offering a potential means for the enzyme to attenuate its allosteric activation. However, in the years since this initial report, there has been no further investigation of this phenomenon. The allosteric binding site for acetyl-CoA is now well characterized, enabling more detailed studies on acetyl-CoA hydrolysis at the allosteric site. Here, …

Obesity increases the risk of respiratory diseases that reduce respiratory chemosensitivity, such as Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome and sleep apnea. Recent evidence suggests that obesity-related changes in the brain, including alterations in melanocortin signaling via the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), may underly altered chemosensitivity. Setmelanotide, an MC4R agonist, causes weight loss in both humans and animal models. However, it is unknown the extent to which setmelanotide affects respiratory chemosensitivity independent of body weight loss. The present study uses diet-induced obese, male C57bl/6 J mice to determine the extent to which acute setmelanotide treatment affects the hypercapnic ventilatory response (HCVR). We find that …

Background:
Post-term pregnancy, defined as reaching or exceeding 42 + 0 weeks of gestation, is known to be associated with unfavourable birth outcomes. High-income countries have responded to this risk by widely adopting labour induction protocols in late-term, but many low- and middle-income countries have not. However, understanding underlying mechanisms linking post-term births to adverse newborn and infant outcomes remains limited.
Objective:
To investigate the (a) prevalence of post-term, (b) the risk factors associated with post-term (c) the association between post-term births and the risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates and of infant mortality in middle-income settings.
Methods:

BACKGROUND: Despite the existence of institutional protocols, liver transplant centers often have variability in early immunosuppression practices. We aimed to measure within-center variability in early immunosuppression after pediatric liver transplant (LT) and examine its association with one-year outcomes.
METHODS: We analyzed pediatric LTs from 2013 to 2018 in the United Network for Organ Sharing registry, with data aggregated by center. We categorized induction regimen as corticosteroids only vs. T-cell depleting antibody vs. non-T-cell depleting antibody. Primary exposures were coefficient of immunosuppression variability (CIV) in (1) induction and (2) mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) use. Primary outcomes were one-year graft survival, patient survival, …

Personalized antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) have achieved positive results in the treatment of rare genetic disease. As clinical sequencing technologies continue to advance, the ability to identify patients with rare disease harbouring pathogenic genetic variants amenable to this therapeutic strategy will probably improve. Here we describe a scalable platform for generating patient-derived cellular models and demonstrate that these personalized models can be used for preclinical evaluation of patient-specific ASOs. We describe protocols for delivery of ASOs to patient-derived organoid models and confirm reversal of disease-associated phenotypes in cardiac organoids derived from a patient with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with a structural …

Postpolypectomy Syndrome Without The Use Of Hot Snare, Ryan D. Plunkett, Neel Matiwala, Matthew Schroeder, Amna Qureshi, Michael Presti
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The mechanism of postpolypectomy syndrome (PPS) has been largely attributed to transmural injury related to electrocoagulation. This syndrome classically presents with fever, leukocytosis, localized peritoneal inflammation, and abdominal pain following colonoscopy with polypectomy, resolving with conservative management. However, this case describes a patient who presented with these symptoms after undergoing resection of 11 polyps via cold snare and biopsy forceps. Histology did not show deep colonic injury from the polypectomy, and no electrocoagulation was used, making this case inconsistent with the accepted explanation of postpolypectomy syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Unnecessary cesarean delivery can have negative implications for both mothers and infants. In the United States, the proportion of women undergoing cesarean delivery exceeds the acceptable World Health Organization proportion. Reducing cesarean deliveries is a national goal of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Healthy People 2030, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine if excessive gestational weight gain is associated with increased risk of cesarean delivery across multiple body mass index categories.

Introduction: Pediatric oncologic and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients are vulnerable to development of respiratory failure due to chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, and immunosuppression. Yet, providing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support in these patient populations remains controversial with heterogenous utilization across pediatric institutions. The aim of this study is to characterize and compare outcomes in pediatric oncologic and HSCT patients with respiratory failure in the presence and absence of ECMO support. Methods: This study was a retrospective matched comparative analysis between two tertiary care pediatric institutions. Patients less than 18 years old with an underlying oncologic diagnosis and/or HSCT with …

We present a case of prenatally diagnosed d-transposition of the great arteries (d-TGA) with intact ventricular septum (IVS), postnatally found to have bilateral patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with potential for isolation of the left subclavian artery (LSA) and an abnormal left coronary artery (LCA) course. Isolation of the LSA is a rare occurrence and defined as an anomalous origin from the pulmonary artery via PDA and apparent discontinuation from the arch following PDA closure. It is exceedingly rare in association with d-TGA. Coronary artery anatomy is particularly important in d-TGA given most patients undergo the arterial switch operation (ASO).

Consider a situation where an African American man, Tony, residing in a rural southern jurisdiction, holds an order of protection against his partner, John, who is also an African American man. Furthermore, the presiding judge, an elderly white man, was known for denying orders of protection even when sought by white women, which creates an atmosphere where seeking court intervention might result in embarrassment and judgment for the client. This embarrassment and judgment stems from the stereotypes that mostly people who have engaged in criminal behavior belong in court; additionally, survivors experience shame about why they are appearing before a …
