Evaluation of Hyponatremia Management Pathway Implementation in a Large Academic Health System
Submission Number: 1894079
Patients with severe hyponatremia managed using the Care Signature pathway were more likely to receive hypertonic saline and had lower mortality rates compared to those not managed with the pathway. These results suggest that the pathway can improve clinical outcomes and reduce resource use. Further studies are needed to evaluate its impact on other patients’ outcomes and long-term effectiveness.

Physical Fitness And Wellness In Law Enforcement, Tavion Buchanan
Physical Fitness And Wellness In Law Enforcement, Tavion Buchanan
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Long hours, shift work, and general poor nutrition factor into a multitude of reasons why first responders are obese, suffering from mental illnesses, and dying at a faster rate than the general public. First responders also suffer from PTSD, alcoholism, and commit suicide as a direct result of the horrendous things they see and respond to. Administrators should attempt to mitigate these issues by leading from the front when it comes to physical fitness and mental health. Administrators should also give first responders ample opportunity to work on their mental health and physical wellbeing. Law enforcement is one of the …

Examining Tension Management Of Coastal Residents' Decisions To Stay Or Leave During Hurricane Florence, Andrew S. Pyle, Ryan P. Fuller, Hillary Smith
Publications
This study examines how coastal residents in the path of a hurricane manage the tension to evacuate or stay. In interviews with 17 coastal residents, we found evidence of tension management through account giving. Stayers justified their choices as keeping close to loved ones and animals, reducing difficulties in returning, and benchmarking prior storms to guide their actions over other sources of information. Evacuees framed the tension as either the only choice or the better of two poor choices. Our analysis also revealed contradictions in evacuating: a case of haves (have resources to evacuate but do not) and have nots …
Recruitment And Retention In Law Enforcement, Jefferson Dennis
Recruitment And Retention In Law Enforcement, Jefferson Dennis
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
This capstone paper covered the topic of recruitment and retention. It detailed issues around this topic and ways to improve it. United States law enforcement agencies face challenges when recruiting qualified personnel, including issues related to image, working under stress, low pay scale, and disciplined organizations. Topics were analyzed through administrative, ethical, legal, and legislative lenses. The study outlines comprehensive policy changes that include a broad and competitive pay structure, increased support to mental health workers, better community outreaches, and product modernization in recruitment and retention.

Primal Leadership In Healthcare: A Phenomenological Study Of Emergency Medicine Physicians And Their Perspective On Effective Leadership, Zoe Zaidi
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify and describe how emergency medicine (EM) physicians in leadership roles use the six EI leadership competencies related to relationship management (inspiration, influence, developing others, change catalyst, conflict management, and teamwork and collaboration) to lead teams and accomplish effective results. Methodology: This phenomenological study described the lived experiences of emergency medicine (EM) physician leaders in San Bernadino, Riverside, and Orange counties in Southern California. The participants were selected through nonprobability purposeful sampling and met the criteria “as leaders” for achieving effective results. Data were collected through semistructured interview questions and analysis …

Aortoduodenal Syndrome: A Rare Case Of Duodenal Obstruction Due To Endovascular Aneurysm Endoleak., Raksha Adhikari, Parth Patel, Christopher Tait
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Aortoduodenal syndrome results from expansion of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, leading to symptoms of upper gastrointestinal obstruction. Endovascular aneurysm repair of large or symptomatic aortic aneurysms has become an important treatment modality for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, a large proportion of these grafts are complicated by endoleaks that can lead to a spectrum of significant symptoms. We present a case of rapidly worsening gastrointestinal obstructive symptoms in a patient with an already repaired aortic stent graft and a solitary kidney, found to be due to a type III endoleak that improved after emergent repeat endovascular aneurysm repair.

Effects Of Initial Foot Position On Neuromuscular And Biomechanical Control During The Stand-To-Sit Movement: Implications For Rehabilitation Strategies, Woohyoung Jeon, Ashley Dalby, Xuanliang Neil Dong, Chung-Hyun Goh
Health & Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Initial foot position (IFP) is one of the important movement strategies that influence neuromuscular and biomechanical control during sit-to-stand (STS) movements. Similarly, stand-to-sit (StandTS) is vital in rehabilitation settings for evaluating strength and balance control during descending movements. Understanding how IFP impacts changes in biomechanical and neuromuscular movement control factors during StandTS can provide valuable insights for designing effective rehabilitation programs.
Methods: Twelve healthy young adults participated in this study, examining three symmetric IFPs: (1) REF (reference); (2) wide: each foot was shifted outwards by 30% from REF; (3) TO (toes-out): symmetric toes-out angle of 30° from REF. Kinematic …

In January 2025, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service published a proposed rule to continue protecting grizzly bears in the contiguous United States under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The proposed rule and guidance for how the public can comment on the proposed rule can be found at this link: https://www.fws.gov/press-release/2025-01/usfws-proposes-update-grizzly-bear-esa-listing-management
In January 2025, we implemented a web-based survey designed to assess the attitudes of residents of the contiguous United States, as they pertain to the appropriateness of continuing protection of grizzly bears under the ESA. A large body of prior research indicates that individuals’ attitudes toward species protections can …

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
For older adults, performing activities of daily living (ADLs) requires generating short bursts of energy anaerobically.1 The current gold standard for measuring anaerobic threshold (AT) is the Wingate Anaerobic Test, which requires a specialized bicycle. While many tests exist to assess fall risk and submaximal endurance, there is an absence of accessible clinical tools for measuring anaerobic threshold. Measuring AT is an important predictor of an older adult’s ability to perform ADLs safely, allowing physical therapists to tailor interventions to improve function and quality of life.

Subjective Outcome Measures And Floor Transfer Ability In Communitydwelling Older Adults, Brianna Helton, Marisa Doveri, Shelby Peerboom, Emily Thomson, Lyndsay Stutzenberger, Tyler Whited
Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
The ability to get up and down off the floor is associated with functional independence and is not often clinically assessed. Previous research has shown that floor transfers (FT) are closely linked with falls and associated injuries, age, and the physical function of older adults. There is association between individuals self reported ability and actual ability to complete a FT. No research has assessed the association between self-report measures and actual ability to get up from the floor. Purpose: Determine the relationship between self-report measures and FT ability while evaluating the differences in these measures and the strategies used by …

Writing Prompts In The Healing-Centered Classroom, Elizabeth Hancock
Writing Prompts In The Healing-Centered Classroom, Elizabeth Hancock
The Utah English Journal
As I began the 2013-14 school year, I encountered students with a full range of life experiences. My students’ lives ran the gamut from having the 1950s version of traditional middle- class families to being part of the Utah foster care system. Their challenges included depression over not making the school dance team, dyslexia or other learning disabilities, and responding to trauma with self-harm by using a heated curling iron. I wondered what I could do to help struggling students make it through the minefields in their lives, and remembered the character of Ponyboy, who writes about his friends’ traumatic …
Health Coverage And Educational Investments, Pragati, Tirthatanmoy Das
Health Coverage And Educational Investments, Pragati, Tirthatanmoy Das
Working Papers
Human capital theory posits that investments in health and education are complementary. Health investments boost education demand, thereby increasing educational expenditures. Drawing on this theory, this paper examines the impact of health coverage on three aspects of household educational investments: (a) the share of educational expenditures, (b) the level of educational spending, and (c) the probability of taking an educational loan. Using a health insurance scheme in India, this study employs a modified difference-in-difference strategy and two waves of the Indian Human Development Survey (2004-05 and 2011-12). The findings show that health insurance led to a 10 percent rise in …
