Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman
Nimble Tongues: Studies In Literary Translingualism, Steven G. Kellman
Comparative Cultural Studies
Nimble Tongues is a collection of essays that continues Steven G. Kellman's work in the fertile field of translingualism, focusing on the phenomenon of switching languages. A series of investigations and reflections rather than a single thesis, the collection is perhaps more akin in its aims—if not accomplishment—to George Steiner’s Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution or Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality.
Topics covered include the significance of translingualism; translation and its challenges; immigrant memoirs; the autobiographies that Ariel Dorfman wrote in English and Spanish, respectively; the only feature film ever made in Esperanto; Francesca Marciano, an …

In And Out Of Character: Socratic Mimēsis, Mateo Duque
In And Out Of Character: Socratic Mimēsis, Mateo Duque
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the Republic, Plato has Socrates attack poetry’s use of mimēsis, often translated as ‘imitation’ or ‘representation.’ Various scholars (e.g. Blondell 2002; Frank 2018; Halliwell 2009; K. Morgan 2004) have noticed the tension between Socrates’ theory critical of mimēsis and Plato’s literary practice of speaking through various characters in his dialogues. However, none of these scholars have addressed that it is not only Plato the writer who uses mimēsis but also his own character, Socrates. At crucial moments in several dialogues, Socrates takes on a role and speaks as someone else. I call these moments “Socratic mimēsis.” …
The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan
The Idea Of A National Church In The Ukrainian Intellectual Discourse, Natalia Ishchuk, Oleksandr Sagan
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The reception of the idea of a national church in the Ukrainian intellectual environment in the context of current socio-political events in the country is examined here. Among the most influential Ukrainian religious scholars, there is a dominant idea that the formation of a national church is a part of the state formation and security of the country. They opposed historical distortions of this idea, as it occurs in case of ethnophyletism—domination of the national over the ecclesiastical, and etatism—the domination of the state, imperial (in the form of the Orthodox empire) over the ecclesiastical. Signs of these distortions are …

Introduction To The State Of New Testament Studies, Nijay K. Gupta, Scot Mcknight
Introduction To The State Of New Testament Studies, Nijay K. Gupta, Scot Mcknight
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Excerpt: "I (Nijay) first encountered the book The Face of New Testament Studies, this book's predecessor, when I was in graduate school. I went to seminary primarily because I wanted to learn how to study the Bible in depth for personal and ministry formation. I had not studied the Bible in an academic setting prior to that. The "world" of biblical studies for this neophyte seminary student was intriguing but mystifying-so many technical terms, multiple differing perspectives, views, and ideas proposed and presented, and all of this was in flux as scholarship moved forward decade after decade. Thankfully, The Face …
Using Natural Language Processing To Categorize Fictional Literature In An Unsupervised Manner, Dalton J. Crutchfield
Using Natural Language Processing To Categorize Fictional Literature In An Unsupervised Manner, Dalton J. Crutchfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
When following a plot in a story, categorization is something that humans do without even thinking; whether this is simple classification like “This is science fiction” or more complex trope recognition like recognizing a Chekhov's gun or a rags to riches storyline, humans group stories with other similar stories. Research has been done to categorize basic plots and acknowledge common story tropes on the literary side, however, there is not a formula or set way to determine these plots in a story line automatically. This paper explores multiple natural language processing techniques in an attempt to automatically compare and cluster …

The Political And Cultural Implications Of The Ancient Greek Ghost, Margie Freeman
The Political And Cultural Implications Of The Ancient Greek Ghost, Margie Freeman
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the role of ghosts in the works of two Ancient Greek authors, Homer and Aeschylus. I argue that these ghosts are not simple plot devices intended to shock the audience, but are integrated characters whose desires, actions, and words reinforce major themes in the works in which they appear. Homer—whose Iliad and Odyssey were compiled around the eighth century BCE—uses ghosts to show the importance of the home and family in the epics. Although Homeric ghosts are political figures, they only speak about personal relationships, never political ones. Aeschylus, on the other hand, uses ghosts in Persians, …

“Let’S Get A Coffee!”: A Transformative International Honors Partnership, Leslie Kaplan, Sophia Zevgoli, Andres Gallo
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Advocates of study abroad have emphasized that semester- and year-long programs offer greater opportunities than short-term programs for students to enhance their personal, academic, and professional development (Dwyer). But can carefully constructed short-term study abroad experiences, which are increasingly popular choices for undergraduates, have similar effects? One study suggests they can achieve important outcomes, such as encouraging tolerance for ambiguity, appreciation for diversity, and openness to experience (Shadowen et al.). Another study shows that even shortterm exposure to other cultures can enhance creativity (Leung et al.), and a third demonstrates that creative problem solving was improved by cultural study in …

Euripides : Suppliant To The Divine Feminine, Liz Amato
Euripides : Suppliant To The Divine Feminine, Liz Amato
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The Euripidean tragedies Hippolytus, The Bacchae and The Medea present us with female characters who have sacred and profound interactions with the gods. These women have powerful ritualistic abilities that move the tragic action. Similarly, Euripides' versions of Hecuba and Electra present us with dynamic: female characters who derive their agency from the religio-judicial need for cosmic atonement. It is up to these heroines to uphold the sacred laws decreed by the gods. Why does Euripides empower these females with such direct means of divination? Arguably, Euripides felt it necessary to use these deistic feminine connections to destroy the titular …
A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Student Nurses With Learning Disabilities In The Clinical Learning Environment, Lorna Jean Woodhall
A Transcendental Phenomenological Study Of Student Nurses With Learning Disabilities In The Clinical Learning Environment, Lorna Jean Woodhall
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to record the lived experiences of nursing students with learning disabilities while in the clinical learning environment. Dewey’s theory of education and Knowles’ theory of adult learning were used to ground this study. Their theories provided a foundation to understand how the learning process is affected in nursing students with learning disabilities in the clinical learning environment. The study answered the following research questions: (a) What are the lived experiences of student nurses with learning disabilities in the clinical learning setting? (b) How are nursing students impacted by their learning disability during …
Babette Babich: A Nietzschean Scholar On The “Physiology Of Aesthetics”, Gary Shapiro
Babette Babich: A Nietzschean Scholar On The “Physiology Of Aesthetics”, Gary Shapiro
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In pursuing the invitation to muse upon Babette Babich's scholarship on Nietzsche, I begin with a philological observation about the terms "scholar" and "scholarship." These take their origin from Greek scholé (close cousin, the Latin otium) - which designate leisure. So far as they have to do with study, research, writing, and their communication through letters, lectures, and publication, this is because, as the literate Greeks and Romans understood it, these are among the activities — along with the other artes liberales — that a person with the freedom of leisure would want to pursue. At the highest level, Aristotle …

Designing Playful Systems, Michael Straeubig
Designing Playful Systems, Michael Straeubig
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
Play is a common, yet elusive phenomenon. Many definitions of play and explanations for its existence have been brought forward in various disciplines such as psychology, anthropology, ethology and in the humanities. As an activity apparently serving no other purpose than itself, play can be simply considered a pleasant pastime. Yet its equation with fun has been challenged by artists and scholars alike. Being in a playful state does not warrant extrinsic motivation or being conscious of an external purpose. However, play creates meaning, and scientists are pursuing functional explanations for it. These conflicting observations are contributing to the ambiguity …

A Development Of Least Significant Bit Steganography Technique, Mohammed Majid
A Development Of Least Significant Bit Steganography Technique, Mohammed Majid
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
Recently, the world has been interested in transferring data between different devices. The transmission of data must be encrypted so that the intended receiver can only read and process a secret message. Hence, the security of information has become more important than earlier. This paper proposes the least significant bit Steganography method to hide a secret message inside an image cover via using dynamic stego-key. To check the effectiveness of the proposed method, many factors are used for evaluation and compared with another method. The results illustrate more robustness at steganography since stego-key depends on the cover image to hide …
“I Don’T Want To Hear Your Language!” White Social Imagination And The Demography Of Roman Corinth, Ekaputra Tupamahu
“I Don’T Want To Hear Your Language!” White Social Imagination And The Demography Of Roman Corinth, Ekaputra Tupamahu
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
This article aims to deconstruct the hidden pervasive whiteness in biblical scholarship and to propose another way to reimagine the linguistic dynamic of Roman Corinth from an Asian American perspective. It highlights the legal and historical interconnectedness of whiteness and the dominance of English. English is a critical marker of whiteness in the United States. In this context, immigrants are expected to conform to and assimilate themselves with whiteness by performing English. This particular racialized context has influenced and resulted in a scholarly historical reconstruction of immigrants in Roman Corinth as “Greek speaking im/migrants.” Immigrants can come from many different …
Using Nano- And Micro- Structural Materials For Concrete Environmental Applications, Hala Nabeel Elia
Using Nano- And Micro- Structural Materials For Concrete Environmental Applications, Hala Nabeel Elia
Theses and Dissertations
Utilized globally in the construction industry, concrete is an integral component of homes, roads, airports, skyscrapers, and tunnels. Traditional concrete components are cement, fine aggregate (sand), coarse aggregate (gravel or crushed stone), and water. When cement and water compound together they will make a paste which binds all the aggregates together to make the concrete. Unfortunately, every one ton of cement manufactured emits 0.9 ton of CO2into the air. The goal of this two-part work was to obtain an environmentally friendly concrete. The first part used supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), fly ash and silica fume, to create concrete with high …
High School Teacher’S Acceptance Of Technology And Privacy Concerns In The 1:1 Initiative Laptop Program, Ronald Gatewood Jr
High School Teacher’S Acceptance Of Technology And Privacy Concerns In The 1:1 Initiative Laptop Program, Ronald Gatewood Jr
Theses and Dissertations
Prior research has shown teachers’ attitudes, teachers’ preparation for using technology, and the availability of technology had significant positive associations with technology integration. However, research has shown that teachers do not fully utilize technology, they fail to implement it thoroughly due to a lack of time needed for planning the implementation of technology into the curriculum, and they do not have adequate training which contributes to underutilization of technology. Due to a lack of research from the teachers’ perspective of technology acceptance, the purpose of this study was to examine high school teachers’ acceptance and use of technology and determine …

Language Diversity In The Greek Educational System: Promoting Multilingual Classroom Policies, Xanthippi Foulidi, Marianthi Oikonomakou, Evangelos C. Papakitsos
Journal of Research Initiatives
This study focuses on the position of mother languages in Greek education at the level of educational policy, demonstrating the necessity of their further emergence based on modern scientific findings on the benefits of bilingualism. Through an effort to record a set of obstacles that make it difficult for them to join the curriculum, a framework is proposed to be used for the language repertoire of all pupils, so that their rights are respected in practice and their linguistic richness serves as a source of enrichment for the whole population. The implementation of practices that could enhance the free and …
Using Orality To Improve Student Writing, B. Webster Freeman
Using Orality To Improve Student Writing, B. Webster Freeman
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The connections between orality and writing date to the ancient rhetoricians and continue to influence the way we write and are written every day; however, overtly connecting the two in the composition classroom is often overlooked and often underutilized by modern composition teachers. What the ancient rhetoricians did, though, was directly opposed to what we do. They used writing to improve orality whereas I advocate the use of orality to improve writing. We need to help students understand that the writer and reader collaborate to make the performance. A typical session with me as tutor involves my reading aloud or …
Student Perception Data And Its Impact On Teachers, Erica R. Walker-Arnold
Student Perception Data And Its Impact On Teachers, Erica R. Walker-Arnold
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For as long as there have been teachers, there have been efforts to determine the most constructive way to evaluate teacher effectiveness. Research has shown that traditional administrator evaluations do little to improve struggling teachers and that most teachers nationwide are able to earn satisfactory ratings even when they are not performing in a satisfactory manner. This study aims to determine whether using student perception feedback as part of a comprehensive teacher evaluation process would lead to improved practice and targeted professional development. The following questions were investigated in this research: 1. Does student perception feedback drive teachers to reflect …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Ion-Implanted Gold Nanoparticles, Nurlathifah Fnu
Masters Theses
Gold negative ions of 70 keV energy were implanted within the quartz substrates at room temperature at seven different fluences starting from 2 x 1016 particles/cm2 to 8 x 1016 particles/cm2 with the increment of 1 x 1016. Prior to the implantation, Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter (SRIM) calculations were carried to obtain the Bragg peak below the surface of quartz. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) was carried out using 2.0 MeV He++ ions to measure depth and implanted fluence of gold, and learn how they varied with fluence. Backscattered He particles …
