Interpretation Of Stylistic Devices And Methods In ''The Hobbit'', Sokhiba Zaripova May 2021

Interpretation Of Stylistic Devices And Methods In ''The Hobbit'', Sokhiba Zaripova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. The origin, popularity and importance of high fiction in English literature are directly linked to Tolkien's work. Tolkien’s novels were the reasons for the critical rise of English fiction to some extent. His “Hobbit” achieved great success at that time and it was the most popular work among readers. When L. Baum created examples of the fantasy genre, detailed historical events, settings and landscapes were considered as the part of the such genre. On the contrary, Tolkien, refined and elevated these concepts. Tolkien set out to associate the roots of his ideas, which embodied location and time, in the …

The Motivation And Attitude Of Arab Heritage Children And Their Parents’ Perspectives Toward Learning Arabic, Nada Naji

Theses and Dissertations

Due to the unstable circumstances in the Middle East in the last decade, a large number of immigrants from Arab origins immigrated to non-Arab countries. This immigration created a new generation of Arab heritage learners who want to learn the Arabic language as a heritage language for different reasons. This study investigates the motivation and attitude of Arab heritage children between 10 and 16 years of age and their parents’ perspectives toward learning Arabic as a heritage language in host countries. 143 participants (92 parents, 51 children) living in 17 different non-Arab countries have participated in this study. Feminine Discursive Authority Through Symbolism, Allegory And Exemplum: A Study Of Christine De Pizan, A Rhetor Of The Late Middle Ages, Kathleen Burk May 2021

Feminine Discursive Authority Through Symbolism, Allegory And Exemplum: A Study Of Christine De Pizan, A Rhetor Of The Late Middle Ages, Kathleen Burk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rhetorical studies are deeply concerned with the way that human beings use language and symbols to interact and persuade others to follow a particular point of view, or plan of action. In the male dominant culture of 15th century France, Christine de Pizan recognized the limitations of speaking as a woman in her own voice. Therefore, she directed her voice through a cadre of allegorical divine beings, most of whom were women. These allegorical mentors held the divine authority to profess the virtue of women, as Christine, the narrator, humbly listened. This was a time in history when few …

Voluntary Euthanasia For The Terminally Ill, Elizabeth Hamilton May 2021

Voluntary Euthanasia For The Terminally Ill, Elizabeth Hamilton

Academic Festival

A human comes into the world at birth. It is a natural beginning that progresses to a natural end. Human beings, unlike other animals, have intelligence and insight about their life cycle process. The human experience is an emotional, thought-provoking existence that is dictated by a person’s autonomy: humans have the power of free will and self-governance. There is an ingrained power of choice that each person experiences in life, and it is their undeniable right. However, there are still variables that plague human existence. Random things happen to random people which humans have little control over. These things may …

Rethinking Language Teaching Methods And Materials, Matthew Barge May 2021

Rethinking Language Teaching Methods And Materials, Matthew Barge

MA TESOL Collection

With a vast number of people speaking and learning English all over the world, the English language has shifted from being a national language to an international language and finally into a global language. However, English is often taught in a very exclusive way in which English language learners are often times only introduced and exposed to the language practices of speakers who have historically held the most power and prestige in the English-speaking world. One result of this teaching methodology is that many English learners are being taught language practices that are not reflective of how various English speaking …

Premises And Problems: Essays On World Literature And Cinema, Luiza Moreira May 2021

Premises And Problems: Essays On World Literature And Cinema, Luiza Moreira

Monographs and Open Access Books

World literature, many have stressed, is a systematic category. Both literary scholars and social scientists have argued that the prestige of the major literary languages is key to establishing the shape of the overall system. In order to critically interrogate world literature and cinema, Premises and Problems approaches this system from the perspective of languages and film traditions that do not hold a hegemonic position. This perspective raises new questions about the nature of literary hegemony and the structure of world literature: How is hegemony established? What are the costs of losing it? What does hegemony mask? How is it …

Herennius Philo And The Dilemma Of Lexicography, Alec Smitten May 2021

Herennius Philo And The Dilemma Of Lexicography, Alec Smitten

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis seeks to explore De Diversis Verborum Significationibus, the surviving epitome of the lexicon of Herennius Philo of Byblos (ca. 64-148 CE). By placing Philo in the timeline of Greek lexica, his prescriptive style and desire for absolute correctness in speech stands out among other lexicographers, and raises this question: what is the purpose of a dictionary, to describe how words are used, or to define “correct” usage?

An Exploration Of Music Therapists' Experience Of Simultaneous Trauma During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Nadia Mary Flutie May 2021

An Exploration Of Music Therapists' Experience Of Simultaneous Trauma During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Phenomenological Inquiry, Nadia Mary Flutie

Theses & Dissertations

During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, many music therapists continued to provide services to those in need. Literature on the COVID-19 pandemic explores themes of loss, grief, lack of structure, and loss of normalcy. However, there is a need for further research in this area of study. Specifically, there is a need to investigate the phenomenon of simultaneous trauma, as both the therapists and their clients have experienced traumatic effects of this pandemic. This qualitative study explored two music therapists’ lived experience of simultaneous trauma during the COVID-19 outbreak through virtual semi-structured interviews focusing on several aspects of their …

Iban As A Koine Language In Sarawak, Chong Shin Apr 2021

Iban As A Koine Language In Sarawak, Chong Shin

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article attempts to delineate the issue of linguistic homogeny in Iban variants in Sarawak (Malaysia). In brief, the Iban speakers are claimed to descend from Upper Kapuas watershed, Western Kalimantan (Indonesia). Based on local traditions and oral materials, this ethnic group began to move out from Kapuas watershed and penetrate into Sarawak in sixteenth century. After several generations, they expanded to become the major ethnic group in the state. Several recent studies show that the number of ethnic Ibans in West Kalimantan is fairly small and the distribution of Iban communities often displays a pattern of distant pockets or …

Early Education In Tallahassee And The West Florida Seminary, Now Florida State University, Part Ii, William G. Dodd Mar 2021

Early Education In Tallahassee And The West Florida Seminary, Now Florida State University, Part Ii, William G. Dodd

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the year 1850, Tallahassee, through its city government, took the first faltering steps which led later in the decade to the organization of a stable school system. Before that year, as was told in Part I of this article, parents had depended for the education of their children on private schools and on two corporate institutions, Leon Academy and Leon Female Academy. The former, constantly in financial straits, was barely kept alive through the years from 1827 to 1840. The Female Academy, begun in 1844, continued as an independent school until 1858. Thus the story of boys’ education before …

Engaging Students Early By Internationalizing The Undergraduate Calculus Course, Chinenye Ofodile

CODEE Journal

Today's world is global. However, despite increasing numbers and diversity of participants in Study Abroad programs, only 10% of U. S. college students get that experience. There is an ever-growing need for students to become aware of and experience other cultures, to understand why others think and act differently. Internationalization is the conscious effort, begun nearly 40 years ago, to integrate an international, intercultural, and global dimension into the purpose, functions, and delivery of post-secondary education.

Albany State University began a Global Program Initiative in the 1990s. In 2016, we extended into mathematics the curriculum innovations of this program. The …

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman Jan 2021

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman

Theses and Dissertations

Traces of the ancient Egyptian language can still be observed in modern Egyptian colloquial Arabic, which is the form of Arabic adopted by Egyptians as their native spoken language. This thesis aims to better understand the ancient Egyptian language through the analysis of its lexical survivals. It presents a new methodological approach to utilize ancient Egyptian lexical survivals as a source to study the ancient Egyptian language. A selected set of fifty-five ancient Egyptian lexical survivals was computed by matching ancient Egyptian and documented Egyptian colloquial Arabic words having the same semantic fields. While it was generally assumed that the …

Embracing The Apocalypse: Surrealism And Political Pessimism In Interwar Paris, Kyle Alan Young Jan 2021

Embracing The Apocalypse: Surrealism And Political Pessimism In Interwar Paris, Kyle Alan Young

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Whether dreaming of the end of earth itself, the end of civilization, the end of history, the end of capitalism or the end of logic, surrealism seems inevitably drawn to the end, or rather the ends of the world as we know it. This project will endeavor to untangle the apparent paradox of an obsession with teleology (one of the central components of Aristotelian logic) in a movement predicated on a rejection of Western rationalism. While apocalyptic feelings were certainly not exclusive to surrealism between the World Wars, surrealism is a particularly interesting case of apocalyptic obsession, and one which …

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch Jan 2021

Poikilos, Polish, The Perception Of Color, And Polychromy In Ancient Greek Sculpture, Brittany Braasch

Theses & ETDs

The history of polychromy reveals that most sculptures from ancient Greece and Rome were originally extensively painted. Research has mainly focused on the function and selection of pigments as well as the location of the color on ancient marble statues. Many questions still remain concerning the aesthetics of the prepared surfaces of polychrome sculpture. Our understanding of the aesthetic and optical qualities of Greek and Roman marble sculpture is still in its infancy. However, with the development of modern technologies allowing for advanced technical examinations, it is now quite possible to discern such optical qualities. There also remains evidence of …

Drug-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae; Identification Of At-Risk Groups In Florida By Regional Variation, Scott August Herber Jan 2021

Drug-Resistant Neisseria Gonorrhoeae; Identification Of At-Risk Groups In Florida By Regional Variation, Scott August Herber

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been on the rise in the State of Florida since 2013. Florida currently follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for identifying those at-risk for gonorrhea and drug resistant gonorrhea infections. These groups are narrowly defined and do not consider the different population dynamics throughout the State. This study examined the question of who is at-risk for contracting drug resistant strains of gonorrhea in the eight different regions of Florida based on the prescribed use of last-line-of-antibiotic-defense. Florida’s Surveillance Tools and Reporting System provided 12 years of secondary data from 2007 to 2018. The data …

Understanding The Personal Significance Of Our Academic Choices, Maria Savva

Publications and Research

Savva maps the intrapersonal journey that paralleled her academic journey as an international doctoral student based in Cyprus. She describes changes in her research question and how she used the solitude often associated with the doctoral journey to create a space whereby she looked inwards to better understand her academic choices and her relationship to those choices. Through critical examination, she was able to gain a deeper understanding of the extrinsic and intrinsic factors behind her decision to pursue a doctorate and her selection of research topic. This, in turn, allowed her to harness the qualities of agency and resilience …

Viewing The Whole Student: Creating Access By Incorporating A Holistic Review Method In Higher Education Admissions, Delaney Logan Jan 2021

Viewing The Whole Student: Creating Access By Incorporating A Holistic Review Method In Higher Education Admissions, Delaney Logan

West Chester University Master’s Theses

In this thesis, I will explore how higher education institutions can provide greater access to, and support for, students who do not meet traditional admissions requirements such as standardized test scores. This topic is important because traditional admissions requirements are inequitable for various groups of students, and they are also not accurate predictors of success in higher education for all students. My interest in this topic originates from my own personal experiences applying to and attending higher education, as well as my belief that higher education should be accessible to all who wish to pursue it. Therefore, barriers such as …

Networks Of Networks: An Essay On Multi-Level Biological Organization, Vladimir N. Uversky, Alessandro Giuliani Jan 2021

Networks Of Networks: An Essay On Multi-Level Biological Organization, Vladimir N. Uversky, Alessandro Giuliani

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The multi-level organization of nature is self-evident: proteins do interact among them to give rise to an organized metabolism, while in the same time each protein (a single node of such interaction network) is itself a network of interacting amino-acid residues allowing coordinated motion of the macromolecule and systemic effect as allosteric behavior. Similar pictures can be drawn for structure and function of cells, organs, tissues, and ecological systems. The majority of biologists are used to think that causally relevant events originate from the lower level (the molecular one) in the form of perturbations, that “climb up” the hierarchy reaching …

The Impact Of Standardized Testing On The Mental Health Of Teachers, Parents, And Students, Abigail E. Morford Jan 2021

The Impact Of Standardized Testing On The Mental Health Of Teachers, Parents, And Students, Abigail E. Morford

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Standardized testing has a negative impact on the mental well-being of teachers, families, and students. The anxiety around standardized testing impacts the teachers as they feel responsible for student performance, leading to a decline in mental health. Due to this anxiety, teachers are using tactics like fear appeals and conditional support to control student success. Families feel the threat of these consequences as low student performance impacts the social stigma of the school’s neighborhood. Families exert pressure on students by trying to control the student’s thoughts and environment, believing it will lead to academic success. When students perform under pressure, …

Efficacies Of Thai Probiotic Strains Against Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria And Modulate Gut Microbiome And Resistome In Pig Model, Prasert Apiwatsiri

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have been widely used as probiotics in the livestock industry because of their high potential for antibacterial activity, anticonjugation, antibiofilm capacity, and gut microbiome regulation. Lactobacillus plantarum 22F, 25F (L22F and L25F), and Pediococcus acidilactici 72N (P72N) showed several promising in vitro and in vivo properties, according to our recent research. The objective of this study was to evaluate the Thai LAB efficacy on anticonjugation and antibiofilm activities in E. coli harboring the mcr-1 gene. When compared to the neutralizing cell-free supernatant (CFS), we discovered that the CFS derived from our LAB strains at 1:16 dilution …
