The Church And State In Calvin, Bong Rin Ro
The Church And State In Calvin, Bong Rin Ro
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The relationship between church and state has been a problem for many centuries and still is today. Coming from the Reformed background, the writer was first interested in Calvin's view on church and state in connection with Luther's view on the same subject encountered in the Luther Studies Course. The writer soon found differences of opinion among historians as to how Calvin considered the church in relation with the state. Further research led to the understanding that there are two main problems involved in this study: the separation between church and state and the interpretation of Calvin's democratic ideals.

Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell
Marlowe's Cosmology, William H. Caldwell
Master's Theses
A general study of Marlowe 's cosmology may by no means be original, for numerous critics have mentioned the subject in varying degrees; however, there is a wide disparity or opinion concerning the relative importance of the subject in relation to the playwright. This study is not exhaustive; it is significant, however, because it attempts to prove by means of biographical and historical backgrounds the idea that Marlowe had an intellect that was always "climbing after knowledge infinite."
In this study there are two obvious omissions: the plays Dido, Queen of Carthage, and The Massacre at Paris. …

04-Iv. Homer (1967), Heinrich Blücher
04-Iv. Homer (1967), Heinrich Blücher
Bazelow Transcripts
This 1967 lecture by Heinrich Blücher examines Homer as a foundational “breaker of myth” whose poetic work established the metaphysical and cultural assumptions of Greek civilization. Blücher situates Homer within a broader historical shift from mythic unity toward differentiated human, world, and divine consciousness, arguing that Homer uniquely humanized the gods while affirming human freedom, finitude, and responsibility. Through close discussion of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the lecture interprets Achilles and Odysseus as complementary figures of human life—youthful heroic action and mature self-realization—set within a cosmos governed by law, fate, and reason rather than divine absolutes. Blücher presents …

Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud
Exodus 3:14 As A Word-Play, James Shaud
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This present study is concerned only with one particular relationship: that between a name and the word-play associated with it. Thus it is the structure of individual passages which is examined while the relationship of these passages to their literary units or oral background plays a secondary role. This then is not form analysis in the strict sense, though it is closer to this method than to any other.

The Tragic Sense Of Life: The Philosophy Of Miguel De Unamuno, John C. Morgan
The Tragic Sense Of Life: The Philosophy Of Miguel De Unamuno, John C. Morgan
Honors Papers
The major thesis of this research work has been that Unamuno’s life and writings can best be seen in terms of a philosophy of tragedy. Tragedy, in the Unamunian sense, means an agonizing struggle between opposing forces so well matched that no final victory of one over the other is possible. Unamuno wrote about and lived within this “tragic sense of life,” which consists of this agonizing struggle; and it is the centrality of this fact which can be demonstrated in his writings. Unamuno’s own life and the life of the so-called “Generation of 1898” serves as an introduction to …

The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt
The Influence Of Martin Heidegger On The "New Hermeneutic": Heinrich Ott's Use Of Heidegger, James Marquardt
Bachelor of Divinity
In the past few years theology has experienced a renewal in the area of hermeneutics. This renaissance includes more than a stimulating interest in the principles of interpretation, a periodic revival similar to those that have come and gone in other theological fields. Hermeneutics has broken the boundaries in which it has been confined since the age of orthodoxy and assumed totally new proportions, even to the extent of becoming the focal point of theology for some theologians. To trace some of the philosophical influences behind and in this movement is the proposed task of this paper.
