Shapes Of Ministry In The New Testament, P. Gerard Damsteegt Jan 2000

Shapes Of Ministry In The New Testament, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

The chapter evaluates an interpretation of the New Testament ministry that argues that there was no specific local church organization spelled out in the Bible. The absence of organizational structure allows for the ordination of women in the local church and presents Junia as the first female apostle and Phoebe as a female minister. The evaluation presents the biblical structure of leadership and shows that through incorrect interpretation of the texts this view distorts the biblical view of local church leadership.

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen Oct 1999

A Phenomenological Inquiry Into The Nature Of The Sacred, Ana Maria Janssen

Institute for the Humanities Theses

There is good reason to believe that sacred experience is available to all humans. Yet the question of the sacred is frequently reduced to a debate between believers of various religions. As the focus of contention narrows, the ubiquity of sacred experience is neglected. Keeping this in mind, this analysis of the sacred confines itself strictly to the phenomenon of the sacred as a human experience, without confirming or denying the existence of a god or the veracity of any system of belief. Heidegger's Phenomenology is a useful model for such an analysis precisely because it lays aside conjecture about …

To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann Sep 1999

To All Nations: An Exegetical Analysis Of The Parables Of The Lord In Luke, James A. Mann

Faculty Dissertations

This dissertation provides students of the New Testament and missions a biblical foundation for missions as revealed in the Gospel of Luke, and especially that foundation revealed in the parables found in this gospel. The study first examines the Gospel of Luke and the theme of universal missions found within it. Next, the history and theory of parable research and interpretation are examined. From this point the parables of the double and triple traditions are compared and contrasted in order to determine if Luke reveals his theme of universal missions in these parables.

Ultimately, this study focuses on an exegetical …

Intellectuals And Nationalism In Cyprus: A Study Of The Role Of Intellectuals In The 1931 Uprising, Georgios P. Loizides Aug 1999

Intellectuals And Nationalism In Cyprus: A Study Of The Role Of Intellectuals In The 1931 Uprising, Georgios P. Loizides

Masters Theses

My thesis addresses the role of Cypriot intellectuals in the nationalist movement aiming at the political union of Cyprus with Greece. In particular, it will examine the contribution of three intellectual categories to the 1931 uprising, namely clerics, teachers, and journalists. The 1931 nationalist uprising was the first Greek nationalist mass movement in Cyprus, and can be seen as laying the ground for the 1955-1960 armed struggle against the British, who were the colonial rulers of the island at the time. Furthermore, I argue that over and above the petty interests of modernized urban elites, it was the accommodation of …

O Come Our Wisdom From On High- An Introduction Into Wisdom Christology, Ralph Shorey

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The purpose of this paper is not to tackle directly all the varying presuppositions held by Feminists in connection with Sophia Christology. Paul Wenz, in the Thanksgiving, 1994 issue of Concordia Student Journal has written an excellent article concerning this point.' Instead, this paper will deal with the following: (1) The general meaning of "wisdom" as it is commonly understood in Scripture, (2) an analytical study of Proverbs 8:22-35 in order to see how Scripture has appropriated the name of Wisdom to Christ, and (3) a brief survey of Early Church History up to the Nicene Creed of 325 A.D. …

Animal Perception In Early Stoicism: A Response To Richard Sorabji, Scott Rubarth Apr 1999

Animal Perception In Early Stoicism: A Response To Richard Sorabji, Scott Rubarth

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

The Stoics cannot deny that animals perceive things in relation to each other things (e.g. the scent coming from that direction). The dog must minimally connect the scent a direct if we are to explain the animal following an animal's trail. And it is also true that if the animal is to act on a stimulus it must connect the stimulus with a desire or experience. The dog must connect the scent with its desire or hunger. However, I do not agree that the animal must believe that the scent is coming from a given direction or even believe that …

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach Jan 1999

Philosophy And Early Christianity, Daniel W. Graham, James L. Siebach

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

The early church was unable to continue once the apostles had departed. Bishops were only local officials and could not speak for the entire church. Beginning with the later second century, philosophy plays an increasingly important role in the church—this appears to be an effect rather than a cause of the apostasy.

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger Jan 1999

Conservation Genetics Of The Cretan Wild Goat (Capra Aegagrus Cretensis), Erica G. Heumberger

Open Access Master's Theses

The Cretan wild goat (Capra aegagrus cretensis Lydekker) or agrimi is the last existing sub-species of free ranging bezoar goat (C. a. aegagrus) in Europe. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Today, the agrimi's existence is threatened by hybridization with domestic goats. Protection of this animal is very important to the people of Greece and Crete due to the agrimi' s historic cultural importance. To examine genetic variation within and among wild and domestic goats (C. hircus), 6 polymorphic microsatellite loci were used to compare the genetic structure of 5 …

Hellenism And The Independent Theatre Movement In America., Eric Wiley Jan 1999

Hellenism And The Independent Theatre Movement In America., Eric Wiley

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation considers influences of the Greek tradition on the rise of the independent theatres in America during the first quarter of the twentieth century. These influences are of two major kinds, those present in the earlier European independent theatre movement, dating back to 1877, with the creation of the Theâtre Libre in Paris, and those found in the American cultural tradition in general. The American branch of the independent theatre movement harbored from its inception a confluence of both these Hellenist strains, as seen in the work of figures such as Maurice Browne, leader of the Chicago Little Theatre, …

The Textual Relation Of The Peshitta Of Ezekiel 1-12 To Mt And To The Ancient Versions (Tg-J And Lxx), Joaquim Azevedo Jan 1999

The Textual Relation Of The Peshitta Of Ezekiel 1-12 To Mt And To The Ancient Versions (Tg-J And Lxx), Joaquim Azevedo

Dissertations

Problem . The dilemma of the Syriac version is its mysterious provenance and the direct relationship it may have to the other versions (particularly G [Septuagint] and CJ [Targum Jonathan]). Thus some scholars have automatically discarded or ignored the Peshitta version as a useful tool (as a textual witness) for the study of the Hebrew text. The knowledge of textual problems, in this case the relationship of S [Peshitta Version] to the ancient versions, is of extreme importance in the analysis and study of the Hebrew Bible. The awareness of G [Septuagint], CJ [Targum Jonathan], and M [Masoretic …
