Frazier Polymetis: Cold Mountain And The Odyssey, Emily A. Mcdermott Jan 2004

Frazier Polymetis: Cold Mountain And The Odyssey, Emily A. Mcdermott

Classics & Religious Studies Faculty Publication Series

Ever since its appearance in 1997, Charles Frazier’s novel, Cold Mountain, has been billed as a latter-day Odyssey. Separate unattributed book notes on the world wide web speak of its protagonist’s “dangerous odyssey” and his “odyssey through the devastated landscape of the soon-to-be-defeated South.” One reviewer styles the novel "a Confederate deserter's homeward odyssey"; another characterizes it as having “reset much of the 'Odyssey' in 19th-century America.” While such assertion of parallelism between the novel and Homer’s epic is widespread, it also tends to remain general and relatively unadorned. It evidently rests on such typically odyssean plot elements …

The Ethnic Greeks Of Turkey: The Present Situation Of The Greek Minority And Turkey's Human Rights Obligations Under International, Steven S. Skenderis

St. Thomas Law Review

In 1923, the Treaty of Lausanne ended the Greek-Turkish war of 1919-1922 and established two distinct minorities in both Greece and Turkey after a convention signed at the same time provided for the compulsory exchanges of populations; about a million and a half Greeks left Turkey for Greece, and about a half-million Turks left Greece for Turkey.' The Convention established that the Greeks of Istanbul, the Aegean islands of Imvros and Tenedos, and the Eastern Orthodox Christian Patriarchate would be allowed to remain in Turkey, while (to ensure a numerical balance) the Turks of Western Thrace were allowed to remain …

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen Jan 2004

Defining An Immigrant, Helle Mathiasen

The Bridge

Before emigrating in August 1965, I had already experienced America while a child living in Denmark. My first American memory is the smell of Wrigley's Doublement gum. I also remember the green gum package containing the thin, shiny silver paper with the jagged edge you had to remove in order to touch the delectable candy. For me, as a child, chewing gum was America. I was born in Vangede in 1940, the year the Germans invaded Denmark. During much of the five-year Nazi Occupation, our family lived in Sydhavnen, in Copenhagen, on Sjcel0r Boulevard number 3, in a onebedroom apartment. …

Balkan As A Metaphor In The Film Composition Of Goran Bregovic, Nela Trifkovic Jan 2004

Balkan As A Metaphor In The Film Composition Of Goran Bregovic, Nela Trifkovic

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The focus of this paper is the film composition of composer Goran Bregovic (born 1950) and the country of his birth Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia has undergone many major political changes over the past century and its ethno-political history over the past fifteen years could be considered as one of the most turbulent of our time. The aim of this thesis is to uncover the conceptual principles behind Bregovic’s unique approach to soundtrack music in order to create appropriate musical analogies in film composition. Bregovic’s musical career in the iconic Yugoslav rock band Bijelo dugme (White Button), his interest in the traditional …

War In The Balkans, 1991-2002, R. Craig Nation Dr. Aug 2003

War In The Balkans, 1991-2002, R. Craig Nation Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author writes a comprehensive history of the Balkan wars which were provoked by the collapse of the Yugoslav Federation in 1991. These wars, and the instability that they have provoked, became preoccupations for international security management through the 1990s. After an initial phase of distancing and hesitation, Balkan conflict drew the United States and its most important European allies into an open-ended commitment to peace enforcement, conflict management, and peace-building in the region, importantly supported by the U.S. Army. These efforts are still underway, and significant tensions and potential flashpoints remain in place within former Yugoslavia and the entire …

Translating Καταβραβευέτω [“Disqualify,” Nrsv] In Colossians 2.18, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Available lexical evidence argues for a translation such as ‘condemn,’ ‘injure,’ ‘victimize,’ rather than with glosses connected to athletic imagery as in most translations, commentaries, and lexical aids.
