You Could Say That Again: Examining The Probability Of Parallels Between Stephen And Moses In Acts 6-7, Samuel Cooper Smith Apr 2009

You Could Say That Again: Examining The Probability Of Parallels Between Stephen And Moses In Acts 6-7, Samuel Cooper Smith

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis posits the idea that the author of Acts intentionally creates a literary parallel between Stephen and Moses. Comparative analysis seemingly confirms that Stephen is being portrayed as a parallel of Christ. However, little scholarly attention has been given to the possibility that the author of Acts 6-7 intentionally creates a connection between Stephen and Moses. Following an attempt to provide an objective foundation for asserting such parallels, the Stephen-Moses connections will be presented. Two implications follow from this parallel which impact the Stephen episode as well as the larger Acts narrative. The pertinent literature involves commentaries on the …

The Joker Is Satan, And So Are We: Girard And The Dark Knight, Charles K. Bellinger Apr 2009

The Joker Is Satan, And So Are We: Girard And The Dark Knight, Charles K. Bellinger

Journal of Religion & Film

This essay comments on The Dark Knight from the point of view of Rene Girard's theory of violence. The notable Girardian resonances of the film are mentioned in connection with such themes as socially mediated desire for money, romantic rivalry, and scapegoating. The Joker is interpreted as a particularly powerful Satan figure, who illuminates Girard's conception of the satanic basis of human culture.

Poetic To Platonic AlēTheia Orality, Literacy, And The Development Of Truth In Greek Poetry And Philosophy, Justin B. Cecil

Institute for the Humanities Theses

In recent years many scholars have dedicated much research to the development of the Orality Problem. In its most general form, the Orality Problem is grounded in the following two questions: 1) is there a difference between spoken and written language and 2) if there is a difference between these two forms of communication what exactly is this difference and how does it operate. Research into these questions has two major sources to draw upon: cross-cultural research between literate and non-literate cultures and textual analysis of written oral records from ancient Greece. According to the mounting research, many scholars now …

Development And Decline: Perspectives On Oratory In Early Imperial Rome, John Falter Jan 2009

Development And Decline: Perspectives On Oratory In Early Imperial Rome, John Falter

Theses & ETDs

This thesis uses Quintilian's Institutes of Oratory, Tacitus' Dialogue about Orators, and Petronius' Satyrica to explore the topic of oratorical decline in early imperial Rome. Two opposing opinions on the topic recur throughout these texts, a traditionalist one that believes that the socio-political conditions of the empire have caused oratory to stagnate, and a modernist one that favors the oratory of the empire. This thesis attempts to demonstrate that the debate between the modernist and traditionalist opinions is entrenched in the broader social and cultural context of the early imperial period, correlating with issues of education, social class, and more.

The Homeric Hymn To Hermes And Archaic Iambography, Justin Boner Jan 2009

The Homeric Hymn To Hermes And Archaic Iambography, Justin Boner

Theses & ETDs

The Homeric Hymn to Hermes is often marginalized in considerations of the Homeric Hymns and archaic Greek poetry in general on the basis of its anomalous diction and content. This thesis aims to restore some centrality to the hymn by situating it in relation to archaic iambic poetry and the archaic Greek concept of blame more generally. This thesis argues that iambic poetry's verbal invective and obscenity account for much of the hymn's non-epic diction and playful tone. The first chapter provides a reconstruction of iambic poetry and details its poets, conventions, and principal characteristics. The second chapter highlights iambic …

The Greek Language In The Diaspora/ La Langue Grecque En Diaspora, Anastasios M. Tamis Jan 2009

The Greek Language In The Diaspora/ La Langue Grecque En Diaspora, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Expatriation has been a consistent theme in Greek history since the years immediately after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottomans (1453) until 1974, when Greece began importing economic migrants and refugees (Tamis, 2005). Greek-speaking communities and clusters of Greek presence were established throughout the world, even in the most remote places. Only recently (post-1974), Greek settlement experience from a socio-cultural and linguistic perspective became a focal point in research for national identity and immigrant studies. During the long periods of settlement in foreign lands, Greek expatriates chose to maintain their ethno-linguistic and religious identity, establishing religious communities and elementary …

The Greek Language In Contact With English In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

This paper reports a sociolinguistic study of the state of Greek language in Australia as spoken by native-speaking Greek immigrants and their children. Emphasis is given to the analysis of the linguistic behaviour of these Greek Australians which are attributed to contact with English and to other environmental, social and linguistic influences. The paper discusses the non-standard phenomena in various types of inter-lingual transferences in terms of their incidence and causes and, in correlation with social, linguistic and psychological factors in order to determine the extent of language assimilation, attrition, and the content and context and medium of the language-event. …

Magma In A Beaker: Analog Experiments With Water And Various Salts Or Sugar For Teaching Igneous Petrology, John B. Brady

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Solutions of water and a salt or sugar make excellent experimental analog magmas for teaching concepts of igneous petrology because of the comparatively low temperatures involved, the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and the responsiveness of familiar chemical systems. Boiling of these aqueous solutions on a hot plate can be used to increase the concentration of a dissolved salt or sugar to levels that may be predicted by steam-saturation curves. Sufficiently concentrated solutions will crystallize, partially or completely, upon cooling to room temperature. Binary temperature–composition phase diagrams for H2O and KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, …

The Lived Experience Of Adolescents With Dyslexia, Josefine M. Garcia Jan 2009

The Lived Experience Of Adolescents With Dyslexia, Josefine M. Garcia

Master's Theses and Capstones

In this study, interviews with 8 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 16 were performed to explore how young people with dyslexia experienced school in terms of well-being, educational performance and challenges, self-esteem, peer relations, the roles of teachers and parents, and views on support. The elementary years of school seemed to be the most difficult for interviewees. While peer interactions were often seen as a crucial part of school, all students reported that they had experienced or feared ridicule from peers. Academic and personal self-esteem seemed low for all participants, and while many students saw their problems as …

The Archaeology And Translation Of Greek Tragedy : Tragedy And The Emotions, Daniel Edward Gremmler Jan 2009

The Archaeology And Translation Of Greek Tragedy : Tragedy And The Emotions, Daniel Edward Gremmler

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The history of interpreting Greek tragedy and the emotions is a history of logos. Tragedy, however, is poiēsis and speaks the language of muthos. This project approaches popular interpretations of tragedy and the emotions as problems of translation between various discourses: between Greek and English, past and present, historical and transhistorical, logos and muthos. After identifying the ways in which logos clashes with logos from Plato and Aristotle to Hegel and modern classicists, we suggest a new framework through which the emotional effect of tragedy, the tragic pleasure, can be understood: the thaumon and the deinon (wondrous and terrible).

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay Jan 2009

Justification And Good Works: A Study Of The Joint Declaration On The Doctrine Of Justification, Justin Chay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of justification tells how the saving grace of God in Christ can be actualized in the believers. Because of the very importance of this doctrine, disputes broke out between Augustine and Pelagius, later in the medieval period, and most importantly during the Reformation period - which led to mutual condemnations and the division of the Western church. The church still does not have a unified voice in interpreting the doctrine despite recent ecumenical dialogues, which culminated in the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification in 1999.

Cultural And Intellectual Responses To The Black Death, Brian David Yurochko Jan 2009

Cultural And Intellectual Responses To The Black Death, Brian David Yurochko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

From the fall of the Roman Empire to the "Age of Translations," Western Europe endeavored to rise above the so-called cultural and intellectual "Dark Ages." That advancement was threatened with the arrival of the Black Death in 1347. Chapter one details the correlation between the spread of the plague and the location of the first universities. It also examines the expansion of the university system throughout the continent in the wake of the plague. The second chapter looks at the cultural, especially religious, explanations of and responses to the Black Death. It examines how medieval society used the religious tools …

A Cognitive Behavioral Approach To Occupational Therapy Hippothearpy [I.E.., Hippotherapy] For Children And Adolescents With Mood Disorders, Abby Heaton, Krista Tangen

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Children and adolescents are increasingly being identified with mood disorders. A growing concern is that children and adolescents are not afforded a wide range of interventions to address the symptoms of mental illness. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been identified as a useful treatment method for mood disorders. Hippotherapy has also been utilized in the treatment of mental illness. A literature review was conducted to explore the therapeutic benefits of cognitive behavioral therapy and hippotherapy for children and adolescents diagnosed with mood disorders. Although CBT has been recognized as useful, CBT methods applied to hippotherapy in occupational therapy does not …
