Medieval And Renaissance Collection Development Policy, Kathleen Johnson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The Medieval and Renaissance Studies collections support the teaching, research, and service activities of the entire university community. The primary audience is the faculty and students in the College of Arts & Sciences, the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, and the College of Architecture. The primary focus of the collections is support for the undergraduate and graduate curricula for Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Research needs of faculty and students are supplemented through Interlibrary Loan. A Study Of Plato's Cratylus, Geoffrey Scott Bagwell Jan 2010

A Study Of Plato's Cratylus, Geoffrey Scott Bagwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the last century, philosophers turned their attention to language. One place they have looked for clues about its nature is Plato's Cratylus, which considers whether names are naturally or conventionally correct. The dialogue is a source of annoyance to many commentators because it does not take a clear position on the central question. At times, it argues that language is conventional, and, at other times, defends the view that language is natural. This lack of commitment has led to a long-standing dispute over the outcome of the dialogue. I argue that the Cratylus provides no clear resolution to this …

Holistic Mission: God’S Plan For God’S People, Brian Woolnough, Wonsuk Ma Jan 2010

Holistic Mission: God’S Plan For God’S People, Brian Woolnough, Wonsuk Ma

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This book reaffirms that to be true to the bible, to follow the example of Jesus, the church must address the whole person in all their needs. It considers the meaning of the holistic gospel, how it has developed, and implications for the individual Christian, for the local church, for denominations and church groups, for missionary societies, for Christian NGOs, and for theological training. It takes a global, eclectic approach, with 19 writers, church leaders, academics and practitioners and addresses critically and honestly one of the most exciting, challenging, and important issues facing the church today. To be part of …

Cyprus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2010

Cyprus, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Strabo described Cyprus as “second to none of the islands of the Mediterranean: it is rich in wine and oil, produces grain in abundance and possesses extensive copper mines.…” (14.6.5). Geographical proximity placed Cyprus within the orbit of the Levant; currents and winds situated the island in the flow of peoples and ideas between the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean. But at the same time, Cyprus’ insularity and large size fostered idiosyncratic developments. This tension—between native and imported ideas, and invention in a middle ground—informs studies of ancient Cyprus.

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls Bible, Donald W. Parry

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This paper examines various significant aspects of what may be designated the Dead Sea Scrolls Bible: its contents and description, scribal conventions, variant readings, use by modern English Bible translations, as well as parabiblical texts and their possible affiliation with the DSS Bible, canonicity, scriptural commentaries, tefillin, and mezuzot. An examination of the DSS biblical texts, which date to nearly a thousand years earlier than previously known texts of the Hebrew Bible, demonstrates a high degree of accuracy in the transmission of our Bible texts. Most variants offer only minor corrections to our biblical texts. Thus the scribe's professionalism overall …

Luke, Kent Yinger Jan 2010

Luke, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Nationality unknown. 1he only occurrences of the name Luke in the New Testament come in Paul's letters, where Luke is the apostle's traveling companion and a physician (Col 4:14; 2 Tim 4:11; Phlm 24; cf. also 2 Cor 8:18). Some see the same person in Lucius (Rom 16:21) and Lucius of Cyrene (Acts 13:1). The New Testament's third gospel and the book of Acts are anonymous but are traditionally ascribed to the Luke of Paul's letters; this traditional Luke is the subject of this article.

Turning The Cup: Thematic Balance In The Greek Symposium, Matthew Naglak Jan 2010

Turning The Cup: Thematic Balance In The Greek Symposium, Matthew Naglak

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The concept of “nothing in excess” was an important one in ancient Greek life. The guiding principle of moderation and/or balance appears in poetry from the 7th to the 5th centuries BCE and has been extensively explored by scholars. My research project adds to this scholarly work by considering for the first time the relationship between moderation and the visual. That is, I explore whether and how this key Greek notion was expressed in the images that appear on pottery of the time period. More specifically, I focus on pottery used in thesymposium, a politically-charged aristocratic male drinking party, and …

The Lived Experience: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension And Intravenous Prostaglandin Therapy, Phyllis D. Boone Jan 2010

The Lived Experience: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension And Intravenous Prostaglandin Therapy, Phyllis D. Boone

Masters Theses

A descriptive phenomenological study was proposed to obtain a subjective description of the experience of living with intravenous prostaglandin treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension. It was intended to determine what kinds of elements are common to the experience with study participants, to develop an aggregate structure of the experience from the individual descriptions of it, and add to what is now known about this phenomenon. It was anticipated that the stories told by the participants could help to determine how nurses can assist future patients to live optimally within the confines of a palliative treatment for this incurable illness.

Unfortunately, …

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis Jan 2010

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Book Chapters

The Greek migration and settlement circle in Oceania comprised four important stages: the stage of exodus of approximately 300,000 Hellenes from their ancestral residences (1829-1974), the painful and agonizing stage of settlement in Australia and New Zealand during the pre- and post-WWlI period, the stage of their socioeconomic and cultural interaction during the years 1975-1995, and the stage of consolidation and citizenship that followed. During this period, Greek and Cypriot settlers arriving as migrants to Australia, were progessively transformed into citizens enhancing their social presence, consolidating their economic and cultural contribution, and overcoming the pre-War restrictive immigation policies and attitudes. …

History Of Latter-Day Saint Education In Nauvoo 1839-1845, Marnie Hopkins

Student Works

Understanding the history of education within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is essential in order to comprehend the full history of the Church, its people and culture. As the records of the Church have continued to be explored, members and non- members alike have been enriched by the lives of the early saints. Historians have made wonderful progress to provide the common reader with access to the records and history of the Church. However, there is still a substantial amount of research to be performed. One major gap in the research can be found during the Nauvoo …

A New Green Chemistry Method Based On Plant Extracts To Synthesize Gold Nanoparticles, Milka Odemariz Montes Castillo Jan 2010

A New Green Chemistry Method Based On Plant Extracts To Synthesize Gold Nanoparticles, Milka Odemariz Montes Castillo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Extraordinary chemical and physical properties exhibited by nanomaterials, as compared to their bulk counterparts, have made the area of nanotechnology a growing realm in the past three decades. It is the nanoscale size (from 1 to 100 nm) and the morphologies of nanomaterials that provide several properties and applications not possible for the same material in the bulk. Magnetic and optical properties, as well as surface reactivity are highly dependent on the size and morphology of the nanomaterial. Diverse nanomaterials are being widely used in molecular diagnostics as well as in medicine, electronic and optical devices. Among the most studied …

Other-Centred Love: Diotima’S Lesson To Socrates, Colin A. Redmond Jan 2010

Other-Centred Love: Diotima’S Lesson To Socrates, Colin A. Redmond

Theses

In this thesis I set out to determine the possible motivations in response to which Diotima agreed to teach Socrates the arts of love. In the process I develop a broader understanding of Diotima and her natural, feminine complexity. This understanding of Diotima suggests an interpretation of her teaching to show that, for all that can be said of love it is, importantly a re-orientation from self-centred interest to other-centred interest and it is this re-orientation which impacted on Socrates and by which he was persuaded.

Such an impact and its explanation offers a clear rationale for the changes which …

Cypro-Minoan, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2010

Cypro-Minoan, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

There are approximately two hundred identified Cypro-Minoan inscriptions (excluding potmarks). Most are very short (one or two sequences totaling fewer than ten signs). They are impressed, incised, or painted on a variety of objects and materials in an assortment of lengths and formats and are found in a diversity of contexts widely dispersed across the island of Cyprus and at Ras Shamra-Ugarit on the mainland. They span the entire Late Bronze Age (16th-11th centuries BC) and perhaps continue into the very early Iron Age.

The earliest discoveries were made at the end of the 19th century; most recently, Cypro-Minoan has …

Resurrecting The Past, Constructing The Future: A Historical Investigation On The Formation Of A Greek National Identity In Schools, 1834-1913, Theodore G. Zervas Jan 2010

Resurrecting The Past, Constructing The Future: A Historical Investigation On The Formation Of A Greek National Identity In Schools, 1834-1913, Theodore G. Zervas

Dissertations

This dissertation research combines archival data and historical methods and analyzes how schooling and education in Greece between 1834 and 1913 sought to shape a Greek national identity. The goal of this project is to present a historical analysis, that has thus far been absent from scholarship on the subject, and to convey how the adoption of a common national history in Greece, with roots to ancient Greece, assisted in the shaping of a Greek national identity. The timeframe this project examines is significant because it covers an important portion of Modern Greek history. The beginning of the modern state …

Ecclesial Questions For The Global Community, Peter Santandreu Dec 2009

Ecclesial Questions For The Global Community, Peter Santandreu

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"In recent times we, the church, are faced with the ever broadening scope of cultures related to Christianity. What it means to be “Christian” has come a long way from the W.A.S.P. profile that was previously a good cultural indicator. Now, as noted by Shenk, “60% of all Christians live outside of the traditional western heartland.”1 With this fact in mind, we have to ask ourselves two very important questions. How can the history of Christianity be represented in the most all-encompassing way, and what about the Christian …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: White Papers

The activity of the included five years’ worth of receipts was analyzed for both degree of idleness and extent of use. Analyses were conducted upon the collection of receipts as a whole and upon the collection disaggregated into broad subject categories and into Library of Congress (LC) subclasses. When reading the report to follow, one should keep in mind that statistics may sometimes mask as much as they reveal, especially when one is dealing with non-discrete category data. For example, several LC subclasses (e.g., HC = Economic Theory and Demography) cover multiple topical areas, so analysis at the LC …
