The Spiritual Nature Of The Italian Renaissance, Kaitlyn Kenney
The Spiritual Nature Of The Italian Renaissance, Kaitlyn Kenney
Senior Honors Theses
This study seeks to investigate the influence of faith in the emergence and development of the Italian Renaissance, in both the artwork and writing of the major artists and thinkers of the day, and the impact that new expressions of faith had on the viewing public. While the Renaissance is often labeled as a secular movement by modern scholars, this interpretation is largely due to the political motives of the Medici family who dominated Florence as the center of this artistic rebirth, on and off again throughout the period. On close examination, the philosophical and creative undercurrents of the movement …
What Is Translation?, Amber C. Johnson
What Is Translation?, Amber C. Johnson
The Corinthian
As the translation scholar Michael Cronin states, “if we want a world that values diversity of perspective over the certainty of singular belief, a world where many voices balance the privileged few, then translators must be part of the dialogue” (Eco-Translation). Translation is the transfer of factual and cultural knowledge from one way of understanding to another. Translation exposes us to divergent texts, viewpoints, and information, from parts of the world or fields of knowledge not otherwise available to us. In order to produce an ethical translation, the translator has to be respectful of the intentions and effects …
The Ethical Justification Of Increasing Awareness Of Preventive Medicine Among Healthcare Professionals, Patients And The General Public In The United States, Karishma Ether Moazzam
The Ethical Justification Of Increasing Awareness Of Preventive Medicine Among Healthcare Professionals, Patients And The General Public In The United States, Karishma Ether Moazzam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While practiced for centuries, preventive medicine has received increased attention during the recent times. Preventive medicine has a distinct mission to protect, promote, and maintain health as well as to prevent diseases, disabilities, and premature deaths. It aims to fulfill its mission through the combined form of clinical intervention and health promotion. In the recent years, preventive medicine has begun to lean more towards the clinical interventions, taking away from the health promotion. This imbalance has caused preventive medicine to lose its effectiveness in fulfilling its mission. One of the leading causes for such imbalance is the lack of proper …

Co-Opted, Cults And The Classics: Highlighting The Magna Mater Cult In Rome, Janessa Reeves
Co-Opted, Cults And The Classics: Highlighting The Magna Mater Cult In Rome, Janessa Reeves
Honors Projects
This paper argues for a more critical approach to classics, pushing for the de-sanctification of classical antiquity and deconstruction of ‘western civilization’ as a tool able to be co-opted by white supremacist agendas. In the latter part of the paper, I demonstrate what I hope this will look like through analysis of Roman reception of the Mother of the Gods cult, known in Rome as the cult of Cybele or Magna Mater, or the Phrygian cult, and how Roman reactions to the cult reveal xenophobic sentiments and toxic masculinity within the social fabric. Throughout this work, I engage with questions …

“‘Bere We Þe Cros’: The Persistence Of The Cross In English Ritual And Religious Practices From Bede To The Reformation”, David Black
Masters Theses, 2010-2019
Long before Christian missionaries arrived in England in the 7th century, the pagan population recognized the cross as a potent magical symbol. As a result, proselytizers shrewdly used the population’s familiarity with the cross, and their understandings of its power, to encourage converts to the new religion. Over the ensuing centuries of English Christian dominance, the magical aspects of the cross continued to develop both mythologically and theologically, without ever losing connection to their pagan origins. The Crusades, both through the propaganda of preachers and the massive influx of True Cross Relics, contributed in a substantial way to new …

Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Odor And Power In The Americas: Olfactory Consciousness From Columbus To Emancipation, Andrew Kettler
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation analyzes discourses concerning odor within the Atlantic World from approximately 1492 until 1838. Numerous historians and philosophers have described how the Reformation’s emphasis on texts and an increased concentration on visual science during the Enlightenment influenced Western Europeans to heighten the importance of the eye to the detriment of the lower sense of smell. This dissertation begins by thinking about materialist contours of this olfactory decline through a linguistic analysis of sulfur within seventeenth century England. It then proceeds to examine how in the early Americas such a repudiation of the sense of smell did not occur. The …
An Exploratory Study Of Campus Ministries Affiliated With Churches Of Christ In Ghana, Frank Obeng Essien
An Exploratory Study Of Campus Ministries Affiliated With Churches Of Christ In Ghana, Frank Obeng Essien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Churches of Christ in Ghana commemorated 50 years of the Restoration Movement in Ghana in 2012. As part of the historical development of this community in Ghana, the number of individuals who have accessed higher education through the various institutions of higher learning in the country have increased significantly. This development also led to the emergence of campus churches to meet the spiritual needs of members of this faith-tradition as they pursue academic interests on the various university campuses. This development notwithstanding, almost no literature exists which provides a record of the historical evolution of these campus churches and …

Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Globalization And African Catholicism: Towards A New Era Of Evangelization, Joseph Ogbonnaya
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This paper argues that evangelization takes place within the context of globalization, the phenomenon that integrates the economic, cultural, social, political and religious dimensions of human existence towards improved standard of living for humanity. While acknowledging the potential dangers of globalization, especially the expanding income disparity, marginalization, secularization, consumerism, the tendency towards monoculturalism and imperialism, the author advocates daily personal encounter with the person of Jesus as the springboard of Christian spirituality. This paper concentrates on the impact of globalization on African Catholicism’s appropriation of Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium for a new evangelization and recommends important changes in …
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Old Gods In New Clothes: The French Revolutionary Cults And The "Rebirth Of The Golden Age", Jennifer Boyet
Masters Theses
The French Revolution's state cults were possible because of French intellectuals' preference for pre-Christian Greco-Roman civilization, as well as France's history of heterodoxy. The philosophes endorsed ancient Greco-Roman civilization as embodying mankind's ideal and more "natural" state; French revolutionary leaders avidly read these ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers. This Enlightenment Classicalism influenced the designers of the French state religions to mirror Greco-Roman paganism in the new regime's festivals and iconography. The French people's fascination with the Occult further created the cultural and intellectual climate for the creation and acceptance of these new religions of the dechristianized republic. Under this worldview, …
Ireland: Savior Of Civilization?, Patrick J. Burke
Ireland: Savior Of Civilization?, Patrick J. Burke
Constructing the Past
One of the most important aspects of early medieval Ireland is the advent of Christianity on the island, accompanied by education and literacy. As an island removed from the Roman Empire, Ireland developed uniquely from the rest of western continental and insular Europe. Amongst those developments was that Ireland did not have a literary tradition, or more specifically a Latin literary tradition, until Christianity was introduced to the Irish. Once introduced to the island through Christianity, however, the early Irish mastered the language with astonishing pace.

Organizing The World: Power Dynamics And “Civilization” In The British Museum, Katherine E. Steir
History Honors Projects
The British Museum has a long and complex relationship with the British Colonial project. Applying museum theory to case studies found in the museum, this paper explores the ways in which empire is reconstructed within the British Museum, and also investigates how public gallery spaces can engage with controversial history. In the 21st century the museum struggles to reinvent itself as a universal institution presenting collections from around the world with sensitivity. However, the museum still expresses nostalgia for the imperial past, and presents a specific and homogenous image of the ideal British citizen.

About the Symposium
A Futuristic Look Through Ancient Lenses: Greece explored ancient Greece through the eyes of many of Eastern Illinois University's scholars. Academics spoke and led discussions on a variety of topics that have emerged from ancient thoughts and are still of interest today.
The symposium brought together the Eastern community and residents of the area to explore the future by learning about the past. This was the second symposium in the series, following the study of Ancient Egypt in the fall of 2011. …

Sexual Behaviour Among Male Methamphetamine And Heroin Dependents Attending Drug Rehabilitation Clinic / Mohd Fadzli Mohamad Isa, Mohamad Isa Mohd Fadzli
Student Works (2010-2019)
The debates about associations between drugs use and sex have been going on for decades. Drugs use and sex are mediums of pleasure and bring about sense of euphoria and enjoyment. Illicit drugs use has evolved from natural-based drugs such as opiates and cannabis to synthetic-based substances such as amphetamine and methamphetamine. This evolution even modifies the motives of drug use from just a primary emotion-altering substance that cut the users on the loose into a substance that can increase enthusiasm, motivation and self-esteem. The effect of methamphetamine on sociability and emotional loosening effects of heroin has increased their use …
Nossa And Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues, Robert Patrick Newcomb
Nossa And Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues, Robert Patrick Newcomb
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Is Brazil part of Latin America, or an island unto itself? As Nossa and Nuestra América: Inter-American Dialogues demonstrates, this question has been debated by Brazilian and Spanish American intellectuals alike since the early nineteenth century, though it has received limited scholarly attention and its answer is less obvious than you might think. This book charts Brazil's evolving and often conflicted relationship with the idea of Latin America through a detailed comparative investigation of four crucial Latin American essayists: Uruguayan critic José Enrique Rodó, Brazilian writer-diplomat Joaquim Nabuco, Mexican humanist Alfonso Reyes, and Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, one of Brazil's …
Domestic Violence And The Education Of The Nigeria Pre – School Child, Gladys Idogo
Domestic Violence And The Education Of The Nigeria Pre – School Child, Gladys Idogo
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Literature tells us about three different views of children each relating to different era of civilization. The first is during the Greco – Roman times. During this period children were taken to be miniature adult and this depicted in the acts and paintings of that period. Children were not accorded any special status. As miniature adults, they were allowed to work on the fields and farms with little or no attachments to parents. The second is the medieval period. With the decline of the Greco-Roman civilization, Christianity came to the fore. Under the religious tenets, man was born evil and …
Assisted Suicide, Morality, And Law: Why Prohibiting Assisted Suicide Violates The Establishment Clause, Edward Rubin
Assisted Suicide, Morality, And Law: Why Prohibiting Assisted Suicide Violates The Establishment Clause, Edward Rubin
Vanderbilt Law Review
This Article argues that general prohibitions against assisted suicide violate the Establishment Clause because they support a particular and religiously based moral position. Many laws overlap with religious proscriptions, of course. The conclusion that laws against assisted suicide are unconstitutional because of their religious origin is based on the specific historical context of these laws within our existing culture. Over the course of Western civilization, attitudes about suicide have oscillated from positive approbation in many Greek and Roman sources, to outright and unalterable opposition by Christian writers, to acceptance and limited approval by contemporary secular thinkers and health practitioners. At …
