Nature And Nomads: Service Approach To Mongolia Tours, Jesse E. Shircliff
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tourism has potential to diversify Mongolia’s geopolitically challenged economy. Tourism development and promotion has increased since 1990, and there is reason to expect continued sector growth. Cultural tourism has potential to commodify or degrade cultural resources (Gilbert, 2006, Pigliasco, 2010, Soma & Suhkee, 2014) and alter the physical landscape and identity of local people (Chang & Yeoh, 1999, Seng, 2005, Phua & Berkowitz, 2014). As tourism in Mongolia increases, its effects on cultural resources should be understood. This study of Mongolian tourism interviews fifteen tour company employees to understand how Mongolian culture is perceived and used from a business perspective. …

The paradigm of aging-in-place - where the elderly live and age in their own homes, independently and safely, with care provided by the community - is compelling, especially in societies that face both shortages in institutionalized eldercare resources, and rapidly-aging populations. When the number of elderly who live alone rises rapidly, support and care from their communities become increasingly critical. Internet-of-Things(IoT) technologies, particularly in-home monitoring solutions, are becoming mature. They can become the fundamental enabler for smart community eldercare. In this chapter, we share our real-world experiencesgleaned from an ongoing large-scale project on IoT-enabled community eldercare. We identify technology-centric challenges …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study is to explore direct carers’ work experience and formal caring relationships with older adults in a community-based eldercare program in Shanghai. Existing evidence has primarily focused on direct carers’ work experience in residential care settings. However, direct carers’ experiences of caring older adults in the community also deserve exploration. This qualitative study purposively sampled direct carers who worked in government-sponsored programs. Carers participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews (N = 37). Results reveal that despite occasional frustration, direct carers undertook demanding workloads and fostered strong emotional attachments with older adult clients. “Karma” was a critical …

Intervention participants received the same brief baseline physician recommendation in addition to motivational interviewing sessions at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. Evidence-Driven Diagnosis And Treatment Of Acute Urinary Tract Infections In Long-Term Care, Morgan K. Clouse
DNP Projects
Misdiagnosis of asymptomatic bacteriuria as a urinary tract infection continues to occur, leading to the overuse of antibiotics. Due to the growing elderly population in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), LTCFs can play a critical role in antimicrobial stewardship. Urinary tract infections are a starting point for moving toward antimicrobial stewardship, since urinary tract infections are common in LTCFs. A retrospective chart review of 156 cases with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) was completed in a LTCF. The purpose of the scholarly project was to assess diagnostic and treatment practices for UTIs and compare them to a diagnostic and treatment algorithm. …
