After Dinner Speaking: Problems, Causes, And Still No Solutions, Brandi Lawless Oct 2020

After Dinner Speaking: Problems, Causes, And Still No Solutions, Brandi Lawless

Proceedings of the National Developmental Conference on Individual Events

I was judging a round of After Dinner Speaking last weekend, hoping for a laugh. Some competitors were successful through their use of wit, others used cheesy lines, and the last student was probably supposed to be entered in Persuasion. It was extremely difficult and frustrating to fill out the ballots. Should I have voted for the funniest person, the funniest looking person, or the most significant topic with some jokes thrown in at the end like laws on a California proposition? This is a question facing many individual events judges today, while the students competing in this event are …

Effect Of Stress On The Health Of African American Women In Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jada C. Childs

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Health problems such as obesity are more prevalent in populations of African American women than any other population in the United States. Stress has been found to disproportionately affect the health of African American women when compared to European American women. Factors such as neighborhood environment, socioeconomic status, and familial relationships play a significant role in the stress experienced by these women. This project reviews the current literature on the relationship between various stressors and the health of African American women. The purpose of this research is to increase understanding of the unique stressors that African American women face and …

Importance Of Palliative Care In End Of Life Planning, Debra Lynn Hagerty Dr.

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. When incorporated early, end of life care is improved. Additionally, there is a cost of care improvement, that palliative care has the capacity to substantially reduce healthcare expenditures among advanced cancer patients. Furthermore, the cost reduction depends on the timing of the palliative care consult.

Video-Based Gait Analysis For Health Monitoring, Xinyi Liu Oct 2020

Video-Based Gait Analysis For Health Monitoring, Xinyi Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Human gait is essential for long-term health monitoring as it reflects physical and neurological aspects of a person's health status. In this thesis, we proposed a non-invasive video-based gait analysis system to detect abnormal gait, and record gait and postural parameters on a day-to-day basis. The system does not require subjects to wear any sensors or attach markers on their body, therefore it is convenient to use in daily life. It takes videos captured from a single camera as input. OpenPose is used to localize skeleton and joints in each frame. Angles of body parts form multivariate time series. Then …

Music Listening, Music Recreation, And Music Therapy: Effective Implementation In Dementia Care, Laura Cribb Todd

Center for Social Gerontology Community Conference (2017-2022)

In recent years, music has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective nonpharmacological intervention in dementia care. However, there are often questions as to the evidence behind why music works, the tangible benefits, and the best ways to implement music in this setting. Research confirms that music, especially active engagement in music, can greatly improve the quality of life of people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. This workshop will explore multiple approaches to using music with people with dementia, including music listening, music recreation, and music therapy. Each method will be explained and the benefits will be …

Gait Complexity Is Acutely Restored In Older Adults When Walking To A Fractal-Like Visual Stimulus, Joao R. Vaz, Brian Knarr, Nicholas Stergiou Oct 2020

Gait Complexity Is Acutely Restored In Older Adults When Walking To A Fractal-Like Visual Stimulus, Joao R. Vaz, Brian Knarr, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

Typically, gait rehabilitation uses an invariant stimulus paradigm to improve gait related deficiencies. However, this approach may not be optimal as it does not incorporate gait complexity, or in more precise words, the variable fractal-like nature found in the gait fluctuations commonly observed in healthy populations. Aging which also affects gait complexity, resulting in a loss of adaptability to the surrounding environment, could benefit from gait rehabilitation that incorporates a variable fractal-like stimulus paradigm. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effect of a variable fractal-like visual stimulus on the stride-to-stride fluctuations of older adults during overground walking. Additionally, …

Articles

SIGNIFICANCE: Macular pigment (MP) confers potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects at the macula; however, its optical density in the eye is not routinely measured in clinical practice.

PURPOSE: This study explored a range of surrogate biomarkers including anthropometric, clinical, and plasma measures that may be associated with lower MP optical density (MPOD).

METHODS: Two thousand five hundred ninety-four subjects completed a full MP assessment as part of wave 1 of The Irish Longitudinal Study of Aging. Macular pigment optical density was measured using customized heterochromatic flicker photometry. Clinical (blood pressure), plasma (lipoproteins, inflammatory markers), and anthropometric (waist, hip, height, weight) …

Results: In Phase 1, five dyads (patients and caregivers) who received the APA treatment reported marked and immediate outcomes but there were challenges in applying …

Social Isolation: Do Helpers Help Ward It Off?, Kirsten Young Brown Oct 2020

Social Isolation: Do Helpers Help Ward It Off?, Kirsten Young Brown

MA Research Paper

Social isolation is particularly relevant among elderly individuals who are more likely to need care and help with their physical and living needs. Little is known about whether receiving help correlates with social isolation in older adults living at home as often there is no focus from caregivers and helpers on older adults' social needs. Using data from the 2018 US National Health and Aging Trends Study, a sample of adults aged 65 plus on Medicare/Medicaid (N=4,321), I examine the relationship between social isolation and help. I estimate ordinary least squares regression models to test the association between receiving help …

The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar

Faculty Publications

New areas of research on veterans are emerging as the field of veterans studies develops and grows. Yet gaps remain in interdisciplinary research efforts on veterans. The research available across disciplines is still too fragmented to coalesce into a full-fledged field of veteran studies, as other categorical, area, and identity fields of study have done so. By surveying research literature of multiple disciplines used in the curricula of higher education-level veteran study programs, this article presents a thematic and integrative review of the state of research contributing to the growing field of veterans studies. Discussion follows about research emerging from …

The Link Between Nativity Status And Racial Infant Mortality Disparities, Hannah Pierson Oct 2020

The Link Between Nativity Status And Racial Infant Mortality Disparities, Hannah Pierson

McNair Scholars Manuscripts

The United States has one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the developed world. Studies indicate infant mortality varies greatly across racial groups. Black women are twice as likely to report preterm birth or infant death relative to White women. Foreign-born Black women have similar rates to that of native-born White women rather than native-born Black women, suggesting the link between race and reproductive health is more complex than previously understood. Thus, this study examines the interplay between nativity, race, and reproductive health. The cumulative disadvantage perspective has been employed to better unpack how life course stressors may …
