Adverse Childhood Experiences And Adult Substance Use, Mariah Garcia, Melissa Berry
Adverse Childhood Experiences And Adult Substance Use, Mariah Garcia, Melissa Berry
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This study sets out to contribute to the already existing data on ACEs as well as substance use in adulthood. In this quantitative descriptive study, the researchers addressed the relationship of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and adult substance use. Psychological, physical, and cognitive health issues may occur in adulthood due to ACEs (Shin et al., 2017). Being exposed to one or more ACE during childhood can cause poor coping skills and result in adult substance use (Shin et al., 2017). Bringing greater attention to the prevalence of ACEs can help social workers create more sensitive assessments, screening tools, and treatment …

The Need For Financial Literacy In Social Work Education: A Descriptive Study, Tara Mchenry, Belinda Pacheco
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Although extensively researched over the last twenty years, financial literacy is yet to make its way into mainstream social work curricula. This is puzzling because social workers, in general, work with a clientele that consists predominantly of poor and low-income populations. The profession of social work has the unique opportunity to equip its members with tools to educate and assist clients around topics of personal finance and financial insecurity. Using a purposive sampling method, this study explored the need for a financial literacy course as part of the social work curriculum among 102 undergraduate and graduate students in a large, …

Sarcopenia Screening By Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (Rdns) In The United States (U.S.), Madison Marcom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sarcopenia is a disease of muscle wasting primarily seen in older adults. Although this term was first coined over three decades ago, there is a lack of consensus on a definition, screening criteria, and treatment protocol for sarcopenia. The primary purpose of this study is to determine whether registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) in the United States (U.S.) screen for sarcopenia. Study participants were recruited through a randomized email list and included RDNs throughout the U.S. Respondents completed a survey questioning knowledge of sarcopenia, screening tools and company protocols in place, and the need and desire for sarcopenia education. Data revealed …

The Health Aspects Of Crossfit™: Correlation Analyses In Everyday Participants, Claire Rozada
Undergraduate Honors Theses
With close to sixty percent of Americans either already diagnosed with a chronic illness, or likely to face this issue in their future, finding a long-term solution is a public health necessity. Practicing sports regularly has been recommended by associations such as the World Health Organization for years, as a preventive measure to keep people healthy. CrossFit™ is a sport that was created in 2000, with the purpose to train participants in functional movements, often referred to as “functional fitness”, to ensure that people are able to remain healthy, and could be a solution to the chronic illness problem. This …

Novel Applications Of Statistical And Machine Learning Methods To Analyze Trial-Level Data From Cognitive Measures, Chelsea Parlett
Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Many cognitive tasks and measures can benefit from trial-level analyses including Item Response Theory models as well as other Bayesian and Machine Learning models. Specifically, this dissertation focuses mainly on task-based measures of metamemory and how within-set variability as well as item-level characteristics can improve the inferences researchers make about these measures.First, a clustering analysis of judgements of learning across a task is examined in order to detect different participant strategies on a metamemory task and whether strategy use differs by age. Second, the benefits of using item response theory models to analyze both individual and item-level differences in metamemory …

Mental Health Issues Among The Elderly Population, Katrina Johnson, Mi Young Son
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The aging population has experienced a steady growth over the past several decades not only in the United States but also worldwide. This growth comes with increased needs for mental health services. The American Psychological Association (2019) estimated that the number of senior citizens in the United States with mental health and behavioral problems could reach 15 million in 2030. This study explored social workers’ perceptions of the apparatus of mental health services that target older adults. Using a snowball sampling, this study drew nine social workers, mostly Asian-Americans (N = 9). The findings generated four major themes, which were …
Alcohol Abuse And Misuse Amongst Homeless Persons In Northwest Arkansas, Reilly Gibson
Alcohol Abuse And Misuse Amongst Homeless Persons In Northwest Arkansas, Reilly Gibson
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Alcohol misuse and abuse has been found to be a detrimental risk to individuals having significant impact on their overall health and well-being. Any comprehensive attempt at examining the intersection of alcohol abuse history along with one’s risks and resources as it relates to abuse history among homeless individuals is missing. Using in-depth interviews among homeless adults in Northwest Arkansas (n=168), the current study examines the role of social vulnerabilities, individual risks, and social and psychological resources in explaining alcohol abuse history. Findings support the hypothesis that a person’s vulnerabilities and risks are associated with alcohol abuse histories. Persons who …

Invasive Needling Therapy For Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Katelyn Corine Krueger
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions characterized by tight bands of fascia and muscle fibers known as myofascial trigger points (MTrP). Empirical evidence suggests that deactivation of MTrP’s is best accomplished with invasive needling therapy such as dry needling, trigger point injections, and Botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injections. The objective of this systemic review is to compare the effectiveness of various needling therapies on pain intensity and determine if ultrasound guidance and obtaining a local twitch response (LTR) improves clinical outcomes. A comprehensive search of five databases including PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, Cochran, and …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Various film critics have written about the dominant themes found in independent films, such as gender and sexuality, culture, and sociopolitical issues. Independent filmmakers have distinctive ways of portraying these issues. Guided by Pathak (2017)’s framework on melodrama, the researchers chose to use melodramatic conventions and techniques to analyze further how these social issues are portrayed in independent films. Findings found that the independent films used melodramatic conventions in portraying social issues. Analyses showed that (1) the films made use of issues such as family relationships and understanding reality, (2) various cinematic elements were applied in the context of melodrama …

Why Depression Is On The Rise Amongst Millennials And Gen Z, Katherine Santucci
Why Depression Is On The Rise Amongst Millennials And Gen Z, Katherine Santucci
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The purpose of this study is to identify reasons why recent generations have shown a faster increase in levels of depression compared to prior generations. We approached this question by analyzing the previous literature on depression and its contributing factors. We identified differences in factors that are experienced more by older generations and those that are experienced more by younger generations. We hypothesized that possible reasons would include differences in the understanding of mental illness between generations and the influence of recent technology on the mental health of younger generations. Indeed, studies identified higher levels of stigma surrounding mental illness …

Body Image And Eating Patterns In Older Adults, Anna Ellenson
Body Image And Eating Patterns In Older Adults, Anna Ellenson
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to observe patterns in eating and body image within the older population. Body dissatisfaction has become a socially normative experience and older women, in particular, are pressured to alter their appearance to adhere to society’s beauty standards. Because of these feelings of dissatisfaction, older adults are at an increased risk of developing eating disorders and body dysmorphic disorder (Peat et al., 2008; Phillips, 2014). This study utilized a phenomenological approach to explore older adults’ lived experience with body image and eating patterns throughout the lifetime. Five participants, between the ages of 65-86, were interviewed …

The Differential Impact Of Trauma On Student Engagement Based On Social Class, Barinaakerenen Ebenezer Kpuinen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Trauma is an unfortunate part of society, and it has detrimental impacts on youths' developmental processes. High-school minority students, particularly those with low socioeconomic status, are the most affected by trauma, affecting their school performance. This study seeks to gauge how different types of trauma (emotional, psychological, and physical) affect high-school students' male engagements. Binary logistic regression was utilized to control for the different types of trauma. Results show that Asian and Hispanic students who interact with trauma tend to seek afterschool activities to help mitigate the effects trauma has on them. Students' socioeconomic (SES) background also contributes to this. …

Variable Selection And Subsequent Case Prediction In Semi-Parametric Models, Jiasong Duan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Prediction of health status is a novel technique of forecasting the future health conditions with existing knowledge and available data. A reliable statistical model can lead to high performance of health status prediction. Built upon a semi-parametric variable selection approach, an algorithm to predict health conditions is developed and assessed. This algorithm is compared with three competing prediction methods based on logistic regressions, random forest, and support vector machines. Four statistics, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), are used to compare the performance across different approaches. The proposed approach, based on the simulation findings, …

Bed And Breakfast: The Role Of Sleep In Breakfast Intake, Ashley R. Macpherson, Natalie D. Dautovich
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Breakfast intake is associated with numerous positive physical and mental health outcomes, yet skipping breakfast remains common in adults. Sleep behaviors show potential as predictors of breakfast intake; the existing literature, however, has methodological limitations. The current investigation explored the association of means and intraindividual variability of a variety of sleep behaviors (bedtime, midsleep, sleep duration) as predictors of the frequency of eating breakfast and frequency of high-protein breakfast intake. Hierarchical regressions were conducted to assess direct associations between sleep behaviors and breakfast intake frequency. Variability in bedtime was a significant predictor of the frequency of breakfast intake, with greater …
