Developing Strategies To Enhance Mobility And Accessibility For Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Kate Hyun, Kathy Lee, Caroline Krejci, Nilufer Oran Gibson, Troyee Saha

TREC Final Reports

Mobility disparities among older adults affect their ability to travel and access services. This project seeks to understand challenges, barriers, and gaps that older adults experience, and develop forms of assistance or educational strategies to fill the varying mobility gaps and meet mobility needs. This study characterizes older adults’ use of existing and potential transportation options, including conventional transit, paratransit, and ride-hailing systems, based on surveys collected from 146 low-income older adults in Dallas, TX. Using the survey data and interview data, we develop two mathematical modeling (a Latent Class Cluster Analysis and agent-based modeling (ABM)) and conduct content analysis …

Caloric restriction (CR) improves markers of aging in humans; but it is not known if the fat mass and obesity-associated gene (FTO) rs9939609 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), which is associated with appetite and energy intake, influences adherence to prolonged CR. Utilizing data from the two-year Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE™) phase 2 randomized controlled trial, we tested whether the FTO rs9939609 SNP was associated with adherence to CR in healthy adults without obesity. As secondary aims, we assessed whether the FTO rs9939609 SNP was associated with changes in body composition, biomarkers of aging, and …

Comparison Of Ageing Policy Between Hong Kong And Singapore, Ka Wai Tam Nov 2021

Comparison Of Ageing Policy Between Hong Kong And Singapore, Ka Wai Tam

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

This research study aims to explore and compare the ageing policy between Hong Kong and Singapore. Population ageing itself is a dynamic process. The ageing of the population is caused by three reasons: the decline in the level of fertility, the decline in the death rate and the continuous extension of the average life expectancy of the population. It is an inevitable demographic phenomenon. However, under the globalization effect, although the world is getting more connected in the last few decades, all developed and developing countries are facing the same problem which is the ageing population. There are a lot …

Status Of The Operator: Biologically Inspired Computing As Both A Weapon And An Effector Of Laws Of War Compliance, Carolyn Sharp Nov 2021

Status Of The Operator: Biologically Inspired Computing As Both A Weapon And An Effector Of Laws Of War Compliance, Carolyn Sharp

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Artificial intelligence and machine learning technology are developing in such a way that neural networks and systems architecture will soon mimic the structure and functions of the human brain. Consequently, autonomous weapons systems that rely on the limited analytical skills of today’s artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities may soon realize human-like judgment. This biologically inspired technology known as neuromorphic computing presents a breakthrough for weapons’ capabilities, particularly in the management and analyses of battlefield environments. Future cognitive lethal autonomous weapons systems (CLAWS) could complement important roles in combat, such as accountability obligations, whereas their independent compliance to the principles …

Property Law For The Ages, Michael C. Pollack, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz Nov 2021

Property Law For The Ages, Michael C. Pollack, Lior Jacob Strahilevitz

William & Mary Law Review

Within the next forty years, the number of Americans over age sixty-five is projected to nearly double. This seismic demographic shift will necessitate a reckoning in several areas of law and policy, but property law is especially unprepared. Built primarily for young and middle-aged white men, the common law of property has been critiqued for decades for the ways in which it oppresses or simply leaves behind people based on their race, sex, Native heritage, and more. This Article contributes a new focus on property law’s treatment of people based on their advanced age. Burdened by higher relocation costs, more …

The children had significantly lower olfactory abilities, …

Lifelong Instability And Perceived Risk Of Future Homelessness In Older Adults, Sarah Dys, Anna Steeves-Reece, Paula Carder Nov 2021

Lifelong Instability And Perceived Risk Of Future Homelessness In Older Adults, Sarah Dys, Anna Steeves-Reece, Paula Carder

Institute on Aging Publications

Housing has long been considered a social determinant of individual and population health. Older adults with low incomes face several challenges to maintaining stable, affordable housing. Using data from a previous explanatory study of older adults waitlisted for housing assistance (n = 267), we explore individual characteristics and themes associated with older adults’ perceived housing instability and risk of future homelessness. This mixed-methods study identifies salient themes of financial insecurity, age discrimination, employment and health, interpersonal relationships, and trauma. Our analysis and findings highlight experiences of instability over the life course related to older adults’ current housing circumstances.

Loneliness, Social Isolation, And Their Connection To Overall Health Across The Lifespan, Paige Miller Nov 2021

Loneliness, Social Isolation, And Their Connection To Overall Health Across The Lifespan, Paige Miller

Senior Honors Theses

Due to recent circumstances, the incidence of loneliness and social isolation has skyrocketed. Fortunately, there have already been countless studies examining the longer-term implications of these two factors on health. Loneliness and social isolation have been found to impact cardiovascular health, stress response, immune function, resilience, mental health, attachment, spiritual health, and many other determinants of health. A variety of research was examined outlining the psychological implications of loneliness and social isolation. These factors also influence physiological processes and can exacerbate a variety of diseases. After presentation of this evidence, a collection of possible interventions will be discussed, and their …

Implementing Geriatric Frailty Screening In Acute Care, Christine Longley Nov 2021

Implementing Geriatric Frailty Screening In Acute Care, Christine Longley

Student Scholarly Projects

Practice Problem: Frailty is a syndrome of age-related physiologic decline characterized by an increased burden of symptoms and higher susceptibility to adverse health, including higher functional decline rates, pressure ulcers, falls, and delirium. In the general medicine unit of this project, geriatric patients were not screened for frailty.

PICOT: The PICOT question that guided this project was: In hospitalized patients 65-years-of-age and older (P), how does implementing a geriatric frailty screening tool (I), compared to standard assessments (C), influence frailty identification and personalized plans of care (O) over eight weeks (T)?

Evidence: Literature supports screening for frailty in the hospitalized …

User-Centered Design Of Companion Robot Pets Involving Care Home Resident-Robot Interactions And Focus Groups With Residents, Staff, And Family: Qualitative Study, Hannah Louise Bradwell, Katie Edwards, Deborah Shenton, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones Nov 2021

User-Centered Design Of Companion Robot Pets Involving Care Home Resident-Robot Interactions And Focus Groups With Residents, Staff, And Family: Qualitative Study, Hannah Louise Bradwell, Katie Edwards, Deborah Shenton, Rhona Winnington, Serge Thill, Ray B. Jones

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Abstract Background: Globally, pressure is increasing on health and social care resources due to the aging population and growing prevalence of dementia. Companion robots, such as Paro, demonstrate strong potential for helping reduce this pressure through reported benefits including reduced agitation, depression, loneliness, care provider burden, and medication use. However, we previously identified that user-centered design of robot pets is both essential and understudied. We observed that commonly used robot pets are poorly matched to end-user requirements, and that end users and developers of robot pets differ significantly in their perception of appropriate design. This may explain some of the …

Troubling Solutions Through Anthropological Fieldwork: Mediation Research In Ghana, Australia, And The United States, Alexandra Crampton Nov 2021

Troubling Solutions Through Anthropological Fieldwork: Mediation Research In Ghana, Australia, And The United States, Alexandra Crampton

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Social workers and anthropologists encounter different representations of mediation as a professional practice: On the one hand, Social Work is grounded in mediation as expert knowledge that helps others to resolve interpersonal disputes. For example, mediation as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) can enable court cases to resolve without formal trials. On the other hand, Anthropology is grounded in mediation as a research field site and by past intervention experience of anthropologists. As mediation professionalized and became mandated across public institutions, anthropologists became strong ADR critics. Academic debate between mediation proponents and critics ended as critics abandoned research in the 1990s …

A Rapid Review Of Internet Mediated Research Methods With People With Dementia: Practical, Technical And Ethical Considerations, Tharin Phenwan Dr, Judith Sixsmith Prof, Linda Mcswiggan Dr, Deans Buchanan Dr Nov 2021

A Rapid Review Of Internet Mediated Research Methods With People With Dementia: Practical, Technical And Ethical Considerations, Tharin Phenwan Dr, Judith Sixsmith Prof, Linda Mcswiggan Dr, Deans Buchanan Dr

The Qualitative Report

Doing research with People with Dementia (PwD) can be challenging given that disease symptoms of anxiety, forgetfulness, and fluctuating mental capacity can make recruitment and data collection difficult. Once COVID-19 made face-to-face data collection impractical, using internet-based methods became an alternative option to continue with research. However, data collection with PwD over the internet requires strategies to observe, support, and enable them to engage with research, especially with qualitative approaches. Nine articles were selected via a decade rapid scoping review (undertaken March-June 2020) to identify qualitative online methods used with PwD and associated challenges. Methods used were online interviews, clinical …

Older Adult Employment Status And Well-Being: A Longitudinal Bidirectional Analysis, Jonathan L. Chia, Andree Hartanto Nov 2021

Older Adult Employment Status And Well-Being: A Longitudinal Bidirectional Analysis, Jonathan L. Chia, Andree Hartanto

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Mixed findings in the literature on the effects of older adult employment on well-being and the reciprocal influence of well-being on employment suggest the need for more careful methodology in teasing out this relationship. Moreover, as previous research has shown that different domains of well-being relate to constructs differently, more nuanced definitions of well-being may be appropriate. The present study examined the longitudinal bidirectional associations of employment and different domains of well-being, controlling for stable within-person variables. The present study sampled older adults from the Midlife Development in the US study at three timepoints on employment status and well-being, specifically …
