Assessing Fit Between Informal And Formal Support For Dependent Elderly: How Families Have Managed Elder-Care In North Dakota, Andrew Scott Ziner

Great Plains Sociologist

The South Dakota Eldercare Study was conducted to provide specialized data on caregivers (i.e., a spouse or an adult child) and their dependent elderly relatives based on a probability sample of rural communities throughout the State of South Dakota. Based on the study's data, this paper will document (!) the availability and utilization of health and social services and (2)family caregivers as a resource in the care of elderly relatives. This paper will also discuss how useful the formal service deliver system is in meeting the needs of family members.

Exploration Of Patients' Spiritual/Religious Beliefs And Resuscitation Decisions, Elizabeth A. Freitas Feb 2022

Exploration Of Patients' Spiritual/Religious Beliefs And Resuscitation Decisions, Elizabeth A. Freitas

Dissertations

The resuscitation decision, which has the potential to reverse a premature death or prolong the dying process, is complex and can be associated with spiritual/religious beliefs, values, and quality of life. The consequences of the resuscitation decision make it imperative that healthcare providers have an understanding of patients' spiritual/religious beliefs and how those beliefs are associated with their resuscitation decisions. The objective of this study was to determine the associations between hospitalized patients' spiritual/religious beliefs and their resuscitation decisions.

Towards An Ethical Framework For The Design And Development Of Inclusive Home-Based Smart Technology For Smart Spaces For Older Adults And People With Disabilities, Emma Murphy, Julie Doyle, Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Brian Keegan, Dympna O'Sullivan

Articles

Unique ethical, privacy and safety implications arise for people who are reliant on home-based smart technology due to health conditions or disabilities. As a result we need to carefully reflect on our approaches to ethical issues over the life cycle of smart home technology design and the wider living context for end users and relevant stakeholders. In this position paper we highlight a need for a reflective, inclusive ethical framework for the design of inclusive smart spaces. We present key ethical considerations in the design, development and deployment of smart home-based technology for older adults and people with disabilities. We …

Catastrophic Perforation In Streptococcus Pneumoniae Aortitis: Complications Of Infective Endocarditis In The Current Antimicrobial Era, Sana Shaikh, Jorge Isaac Peña Garcia, Michelle Shieh, Alexandre Lacasse

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives

Infectious aortitis is an uncommon but life-threatening cause of aortitis. Given the lack of specific symptoms, establishing the diagnosis is often a challenge. When it is associated with an endovascular infection, such as infective endocarditis, blood cultures may be diagnostic although often limited by low positive predictive value. Imaging studies may reveal characteristic findings, with computerized tomography angiography being the most sensitive. Management includes prompt initiation of antimicrobial therapy followed by surgical intervention, keeping in mind that operative mortality is high due to weakened arterial wall integrity. Here we describe a 25-year-old woman without relevant medical history, who presented to …

Socio-Spatial Disparities In County-Level Availability Of Aging And Disability Services Organizations, Claire Pendergrast, Danielle Rhubart Feb 2022

Socio-Spatial Disparities In County-Level Availability Of Aging And Disability Services Organizations, Claire Pendergrast, Danielle Rhubart

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Aging and disability services are essential for supporting older adults in living independently in their homes and communities as they age. Applying theoretical perspectives of community gerontology and spatial inequality, we use county-level data (N=3142) from the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NaNDA) and the American Community Survey to explore if and how availability of aging and disability services organizations varies across the rural-urban continuum and across compositional characteristics of counties. Results show that rural counties are significantly more likely to be aging and disability services deserts. Stratified models show that poverty rates and relative shares of non-Hispanic Blacks are positively …

Support From Adult Children And Parental Health In Rural America, Shelley Clark, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Shannon M. Monnat Feb 2022

Support From Adult Children And Parental Health In Rural America, Shelley Clark, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Shannon M. Monnat

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Adult children are a primary source of care for their aging parents. Parents in rural areas, however, live further from their adult children than parents in urban areas, potentially limiting the support they receive and compromising their health and ability to age in place. We use two waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (2013 and 2017) to investigate the relationships among geographic proximity, adult children’s instrumental and financial support, and parental health. Rural parents live further from their adult children and receive less financial support, but they are more likely to receive instrumental assistance. In addition, rural parents …

Relationships Between Exposure, Knowledge, And Concern In Regards To A Rat Zoonotic Disease As Determined By A Survey Of Chicago Residents., Ashriya Ashik Patel

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The threat of increased human and rat population density coupled with the high probability of flooding, based on future climate predictions, could put the Chicago Metropolitan area at risk for a Leptospirosis outbreak. Understanding the relationship between residents' knowledge, concern, and exposure to rat-associated diseases can help monitor and mitigate at-risk behavior that increases the likelihood of spillover events. Using survey data from The Chicago Rat Project, partners with the Lincoln Park Zoo, this study identifies residents' lack of knowledge surrounding Leptospirosis is independent of possible exposure risk or concern regarding rat zoonotic diseases.

Is Marital Quality Related To Physical Activity Across The Life Course For Men And Women?, Patricia A. Thomas, Elizabeth Richards, Anna K. Forster

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Objectives: Although physical activity is linked to multiple health outcomes, a majority of Americans do not meet physical activity guidelines, often with precipitous declines among older adults. Marital quality is a less-explored, but important, factor that may influence physical activity, as spouses often influence each other’s health behaviors. Methods: We use nationally representative panel data to investigate whether positive and negative dimensions of marital quality influence physical activity, and whether age and gender moderate these relationships. Results: We find that both marital support and strain are related to higher odds of more frequent active exercise and walking, pointing to the …

Retirement Patterns Of Elderly Farm Operators, David Kavanagh, James R. Stewart Feb 2022

Retirement Patterns Of Elderly Farm Operators, David Kavanagh, James R. Stewart

Great Plains Sociologist

Gerontological literature abounds with studies of retirement and has successfully refuted many of the prevailing myths and misconceptions about the negative effects that retirement was purported to have upon health, self-esteem and life satisfaction. Atchley (1971) concluded that a large majority of retirees generally expressed satisfaction with retirement. Heidbreder (1972) and Streib and Schneider (1971) also found mostly positive attitudes expressed by professional, white-collar and blue-collar workers and a majority in each occupational group reported that they were pleasantly surprised with their ease of adjustment to retirement. These and other studies, however, relied almost exclusively upon surveys of urban populations. …

Longitudinal And Age-Related Implications Of Primary And Secondary Control For Hedonic And Eudaimonic Well-Being, Masahiro Toyama

Psychology Faculty Research

The longitudinal associations of primary and secondary control with two distinct aspects of happiness including hedonic/subjective and eudaimonic/psychological well-being had not been fully studied. The present study aimed to contribute to the literature by examining these associations and their age differences. Using data from the second and third waves of the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS; N = 4963, aged 28 to 84 at baseline), the present study conducted structural equation modeling analyses to examine whether one primary control strategy (persistence in goal striving) and two secondary control strategies (positive reappraisals and lowering aspirations) predicted residualized changes in the …

Girl Friends, Camila Santander

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Friendships between women are common and essential parts of women's lives; however, they are often overlooked. This capstone project titled Girl Friends is a film on which eight women are interviewed and asked about their friendships with other women. They discuss the importance of having female friends and how they create love, support, and companionship. The interviewees also talk about female friendships and romantic partners coexisting, the pressures to find a romantic partner to find fulfillment, as opposed to good friends. Additionally, they describe how friendships between women can be competitive and catty, and how female relationships can change as …

Nurse Practitioners' Adjustment To The Hospitalist Position: A Grounded Theory Study, Donna Tanzi Feb 2022

Nurse Practitioners' Adjustment To The Hospitalist Position: A Grounded Theory Study, Donna Tanzi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Hospital based medicine is the fastest growing medical specialty in the United States. While most hospitalists are internal medicine residency graduates, most of these new internal medicine medical graduates are choosing not to enter hospital medicine, resulting in a growing hospitalist workforce shortage. To fill this staffing gap, nurse practitioners (NPs), some with no previous NP experience, are assuming hospitalist positions. As more NPs assume hospitalist positions, they face challenges adapting to the prevailing physician-based hospitalist model, such as attaining requisite medical knowledge and skills and establishing credibility and rapport with other care team members. Through a series of semi-structured …
