Inflammatory Markers As A Predictor Of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, Asma Al Salmani, Asma Al Shidhani, Nouf M. Al-Alawi, Arwa A. Al Sulaimi, Maha A. Al-Hashemi
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a progressive metabolic bone disease resulting from oestrogen deficiency. Due to the silent nature of the disease, there is an urgent need for a simple, early predictive marker. This study aimed to assess the potential of three factors—neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR)—as inflammatory markers of bone mineral density (BMD) loss. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among 450 postmenopausal Omani women undergoing dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, from January 2017 to December 2019. The participants were allocated to groups based on lumbar spine BMD …

Mitochondrial glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase 2 (GOT2) is part of the malate-aspartate shuttle, a mechanism by which cells transfer reducing equivalents from the cytosol to the mitochondria. GOT2 is a key component of mutant KRAS (KRAS*)-mediated rewiring of glutamine metabolism in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). Here, we demonstrate that the loss of GOT2 disturbs redox homeostasis and halts proliferation of PDA cells in vitro. GOT2 knockdown (KD) in PDA cell lines in vitro induced NADH accumulation, decreased Asp and α-ketoglutarate (αKG) production, stalled glycolysis, disrupted the TCA cycle, and impaired proliferation. Oxidizing NADH through chemical or genetic means resolved the redox imbalance …
Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed
Does Well-Being Moderate The Association Of Harm Avoidance With Cognitive Decline, Christopher Reed
LSU Master's Theses
The Dual-Factor Model of mental health highlights the need to consider both constructs associated with psychopathology and subjective well-being in relation to clinical outcomes. Harm avoidance, which is associated with behavioral inhibition, has been negatively associated with cognitive change. While subjective well-being has been positively associated with cognition. The current study aimed to examine both constructs in a single model to examine well-being as a moderator of the association of harm avoidance with cognitive decline. A sample of 728 older adults from the Rush University Memory and Aging Project was used. Participants completed batteries of questionnaires and neuropsychological tests at …
Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Education Implementation For Graduate Nursing Students, Courtney Kovachevich
Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) Education Implementation For Graduate Nursing Students, Courtney Kovachevich
Dissertations
Chronic conditions are a leading cause of death and disability in the United States (U.S.). Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are risk factors for chronic conditions and death; however, screening and assessment of ACEs do not occur in primary care settings. A barrier to screening is a lack of knowledge and education during providers’ didactic courses. To address this barrier, a standardized education tool was implemented into a midwestern public graduate nursing Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum. The design was a Quality Improvement (QI) project with a descriptive cohort design and purposive sample. The inclusion criteria were students in the …

Implementation Of A Protocol Nurse In The Emergency Department, Marissa Kramer
Dissertations
Abstract
Problem: Increased wait times and extended length of stay (LOS) of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) are contributing to overcrowding, burdening EDs worldwide. A nurse can initiate patient care using protocol order sets while a patient is in the waiting room; however, triage nurses are often too busy to complete these orders. Scheduling a nurse to complete these protocol order sets could reduce ED overcrowding and patient LOS.
Method: A convenience sample was used to retrospectively chart review and collect data utilizing an excel spreadsheet with patients 40 years of age and older with a chief complaint of …

The Regulation Of Oxidative Stress In Age-Related Diseases, Jesica Burkhart
The Regulation Of Oxidative Stress In Age-Related Diseases, Jesica Burkhart
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction have been linked to multiple age-related diseases including common neurodegenerative diseases Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). A gene found to regulated oxidative stress and aging is a stress response gene p38 MAPK (p38K). Oxidative stress arises when the over production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from within the cell or from environmental stimuli outweighs its clearance by antioxidants. This cascade leads to DNA damage, mitochondrial damage, and cell death. Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are markers for biological aging. As we age mitochondrial DNA becomes more sensitive to damages and mutations. When the …

The Experiences Of Older Formerly Incarcerated Adults In A Specialized Reentry Program During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Robin O'Hanlon, Jessica Broome
Publications and Research
A growing area of concern among prison reform advocates and human rights activists is the “greying prison population” or the continuous, unified growth in the number of older incarcerated individuals. Older individuals experience an accelerated aging process while incarcerated, but are less likely to reoffend upon release. While the aging prison population has in recent years become a focus of criminological and gerontological scholars, the lived experience of older formerly incarcerated individuals during the reentry process remains understudied. Using a qualitative approach, this cohort study seeks to further elucidate the unique needs, beliefs, and perceptions of this population within the …

Comprehensive Pain Assessment For Veterans In Long-Term Care., Christopher Jenkins
Comprehensive Pain Assessment For Veterans In Long-Term Care., Christopher Jenkins
Doctor of Nursing Practice Papers
Background Literature supports the need for comprehensive pain assessment (CPA) in long-term care facilities. CPAs provide valuable information for facility providers and health care staff to intervene appropriately regardless of cognitive ability. Without the use of such tools, pain can go undertreated or ignored for this underserved population causing undue suffering and poor quality of life. Chronic pain perpetuates an endless cycle of immobility, falls, injury, functional decline, and eventual death for this population.
Purpose: A CPA was implemented, evaluated, and integrated into the care processes in a long-term care facility for veterans
Method: The IHI improvement model with a …

Older Adult Healthcare Utilization Patterns And Receptiveness Towards Healthier Sg Initiative, Micah Tan, Grace Cheong, Wensi Lim, Paulin T. Straughan
ROSA Research Briefs
The Healthier SG (HSG) initiative was launched by Health Minister Ong Ye Kung in March 2022. HSG marks a distinct departure from existing healthcare models as under this new initiative, greater emphasis is placed on preventive healthcare rather than reactive treatments. This shift in approach is envisioned to have a significant influence on the healthcare system in Singapore – for instance, by focusing on “health care” rather than on “sick care” it is hoped by some that this new model will discourage the ‘over-service’ of patients by doctors in Singapore (Lim, 2022). An integral component of the HSG initiative is …
