Early Rehabilitation During Hospitalization Might Decrease The Risk Of 3-Month Mortality In Older Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study, Ru-Huang Chiu, Kang-Ting Tsai, Yu-Lin Wang, Hsin-Han Cheng
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Purpose: The prevalence of hospital-associated disability is high among older individuals; early rehabilitation may mitigate subsequent physical function decline. However, information regarding the short-term survival of hospitalized older individuals receiving inpatient rehabilitation is limited. We evaluated the relationship of early rehabilitation on the post-discharge 3-month mortality of older patients. Moreover, the association between various age groups and 3-month mortality with or without early rehabilitation was explored. Methods: A retrospective cohort study, patients aged ≥65 years admitted to the geriatrics ward for acute medical illness were recruited. Differences in age, sex, Barthel index and comorbidities between patients with and without early …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Introduction:
The number of older, long-term cancer survivors is increasing. However, little is known about how cancer and aging affect the health trajectories of older adults differently. In addition, the impact of race, sex, and education on the processes of aging and the cancer experience needs further investigation. The current study aims to address this knowledge gap by combining two National Cancer Institute (NIC)-funded longitudinal studies conducted in Cleveland from 1998 to 2010.
Materials and Methods:
The unique cross-sequential design facilitates a comparison between the health changes in long-term (five years +) older cancer survivors (breast, prostate, and colorectal cancer) …
International Comparison Of Literature On Home Health: Taiwan And The United States, Jaden Gloden
International Comparison Of Literature On Home Health: Taiwan And The United States, Jaden Gloden
University Honors Theses
Taiwan is one of the world's fastest-aging societies and in 1994 implemented its universal National Health Insurance program which would later include a comprehensive long-term care system. The United States is also an aging society and a growing number of Americans are in need of long-term care services that the government has yet to provide or finance. Aging in place, the desire of older adults to stay in their homes as they age has consistently remained popular among Americans 50+ resulting in the popularity of home-based medical care. Taiwan society also values aging in place and an emphasis on Confucian …

Purpose of review: To summarizes the literature on cellular senescence and frailty in solid-organ transplantation and highlight the emerging role of senotherapeutics as a treatment for cellular senescence.
Recent findings: Solid-organ transplant patients are aging. Many factors contribute to aging acceleration in this population, including cellular senescence. Senescent cells accumulate in tissues and secrete proinflammatory and profibrotic proteins which result in tissue damage. Cellular senescence contributes to age-related diseases and frailty. Our understanding of the role cellular senescence plays in transplant-specific complications such as allograft immunogenicity and infections is expanding. Promising treatments, including senolytics, senomorphics, cell-based regenerative therapies, and behavioral …
Associations Between Decreased Attentional Resources And Hand Function In Young Adults, Cady V. Seavey, Brittany Heintz Walters
Associations Between Decreased Attentional Resources And Hand Function In Young Adults, Cady V. Seavey, Brittany Heintz Walters
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
Hand function is important for many everyday motor tasks and is commonly assessed using finger tapping tasks and the Grooved Pegboard Test. Age-related declines in attentional processes are well documented; decreased attentional resources, examined by increasing cognitive load with different types of dual task paradigms, may impair hand function. Many everyday activities also require coordination between both hands (i.e., bimanual dexterity). However, few studies have examined the effects of dual task type on unilateral versus bimanual dexterity. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the association between attention and manual dexterity in unilateral and bimanual tasks in young …

Consensus on a precise definition of social inclusion for people with disabilities remains elusive. This study aims to systematically review the definition of Social Inclusion for People with Disabilities in Governance (SIPDG) based on the related literature and offer basic theoretical insight into what might be considered relevant for establishing a definition of SIPDG. A scoping review was conducted with a qualitative synthesis of literature from SCOPUS. Articles were identified by final keywords of "social inclusion" AND “disability”*. The search produced 8,305 articles, of which 149 articles were included in the scoping review. A coding method was applied in the …

The first goal was to conduct a retrospective chart review of 18 patients residing at an assisted living facility (ALF) to determine whether a depression screening was completed two-four weeks after admission. The second goal was to educate ALF staff on evidenced-based practice of the importance and frequency of depression screenings for the elderly. The third goal was to increase ALF staff knowledge …
The Effects Of Therapeutic Activities On Depression In The Long-Term Care Population, Stephanie Nacole Knowles
The Effects Of Therapeutic Activities On Depression In The Long-Term Care Population, Stephanie Nacole Knowles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Therapeutic activities are activities that encourage social interaction and promote cognitive skills. When these activities are put on hold for an extended period of time it can be detrimental to the Long-Term Care population. Depression related to social isolation has plagued the LongTerm Care population since the onset of COVID, causing increased sickness and in some situations death. The purpose of this integrative review is to determine the effectiveness of therapeutic activities in decreasing depression in the Long-Term Care (LTC) population. Literature was collected from 2018 through 2023 from the CINAHL database and analyzed using the PRISMA model. A total …

Having viable alternative transportation options could help individuals stop driving when appropriate. This study employs the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to understand the barriers and facilitators of alternative transportation among a sample of adults aged 55 and older (N = 32). Using a daily transportation data collection app, MyAmble, the research team asked participants questions structured around environmental, individual, and behavioral factors as outlined in the SCT framework. Responses were analyzed using directed content analysis. Findings suggest a substantial reliance on motor vehicles and it was evident that many participants had never seriously considered what they would do if they …
Nursing Students' Intention To Work With The Elderly After Graduation: A Qualitative Study, Terri Murabito
Nursing Students' Intention To Work With The Elderly After Graduation: A Qualitative Study, Terri Murabito
Dissertations
America's population is aging. More than one in five Americans will be over 65 by 2030. These numbers are expected to challenge existing healthcare systems. The recruitment and retention of qualified, competent registered nurses (RNs) to care for this vulnerable population have become urgent. However, undergraduate baccalaureate nurses consistently report geriatric nursing as the least preferred clinical area to in work after graduation. To understand how graduating nurses discern their career intentions, a basic qualitative study was undertaken using Ajzen's theory of planned behavior as an underlying theoretical framework. The purpose of the study was to understand and interpret nursing …
Intra-Generational Encounters With Balloons And Bread Rolls: Exploring Reciprocity In Post/Age Pedagogic Spaces, Joanna Haynes, Lois Peach
Intra-Generational Encounters With Balloons And Bread Rolls: Exploring Reciprocity In Post/Age Pedagogic Spaces, Joanna Haynes, Lois Peach
Plymouth Institute of Education
This writing originates from unease with assumptions that often shape intergenerational practices and everyday encounters in the UK, for instance, assumptions about generational ‘gaps’ or ‘roles’ and the pedagogy of ‘interventions’ to promote meetings ‘between’ ages. Such interventions are usually predicated on chrono-logical notions of infant, child, youth, old age, and life stages. Haynes and Murris suggest dis-continuing age/stage-related categorisation by imagining post-age spaces and pedagogies and proposing intra-generational practice. Quinn and Blandon bring ageist ideas of the ‘human’ into question through their posthuman research on dementia and life-long learning. Thinking with such provocations, we re-visited accounts of our own …
The Experience Of "Doing Well" In Older Nursing Home Residents: Bringing The Past To The Present, Ronald J. Walent
The Experience Of "Doing Well" In Older Nursing Home Residents: Bringing The Past To The Present, Ronald J. Walent
Dissertations
Though discussions of well-being and quality of life for older adults in American nursing homes have flourished over the past decade, relatively few studies have explored these notions from the perspective of older residents themselves. The purpose of this research is to understand experiences and perceptions of "doing well" in older nursing home residents.

Mechanically Manipulating Glymphatic Transport By Ultrasound Combined With Microbubbles, Dezhuang Ye, Si Chen, Yajie Liu, Charlotte Weixel, Zhongtao Hu, Jinyun Yuan, Hong Chen
2020-Current year OA Pubs
The glymphatic system is a perivascular fluid transport system for waste clearance. Glymphatic transport is believed to be driven by the perivascular pumping effect created by the pulsation of the arterial wall caused by the cardiac cycle. Ultrasound sonication of circulating microbubbles (MBs) in the cerebral vasculature induces volumetric expansion and contraction of MBs that push and pull on the vessel wall to generate a MB pumping effect. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether glymphatic transport can be mechanically manipulated by focused ultrasound (FUS) sonication of MBs. The glymphatic pathway in intact mouse brains was studied using …

Exploring The Hinterland: The Development Of A Person-Centered Music Therapy Method For A Hospice Patient With Lewy Body Dementia, Paige Chaplin
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This thesis explores the development and implementation of a music therapy method with an individual diagnosed with dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) receiving home hospice services. There is very little known about the effect of music therapy on patients diagnosed with DLB. Informed by Tom Kitwood’s Person-Centered Care (PCC) philosophy for dementia care, Yumiko Sato’s Musical Life Review (MLR) model, and Lisa Kelly and Bill Ahessy’s Reminiscence-Focused Music Therapy (RFMT) model, a clinical method was developed to explore the effects of person-centered music therapy on reminiscence, caregiver connection, and identity. I drew inspiration from music therapy concepts by Tony Wigram …
Implementation Of An Implicit Bias Training In A Doctor Of Nurse Practitioner Program, Macdana Selecon
Implementation Of An Implicit Bias Training In A Doctor Of Nurse Practitioner Program, Macdana Selecon
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Background: Implicit bias in healthcare delivery is the unconscious prejudice individuals might feel about another person or group. All healthcare providers are susceptible to implicit bias which can negatively influence patient-provider communication. Implicit bias is linked to disparities in maternal health outcomes. According to the CDC, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women is 2.9 times higher than the rate for non-Hispanic White women (Hoyert, 2022).
Problem: Implicit bias (IB) training is not provided in all graduate nursing programs. As a result, graduate nursing students are not prepared to manage IB during clinical rotations and post-graduation, thus, are at …

CONTEXT: Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for incident dementia but whether risk and treatment/prevention strategies differ by diabetes subgroup is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed (1) whether specific type 2 diabetes (T2D) subgroups are associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or probable dementia (PD), and (2) whether T2D subgroups modified the association of the Action for Health in Diabetes (Look AHEAD) multidomain intensive lifestyle intervention (ILI) with MCI/PD.
METHODS: We included 3760 Look AHEAD participants with T2D and overweight or obesity randomly assigned to 10 years of ILI or diabetes support and education. We used k-means clustering techniques with …
Development Of Myelin In Wolfram Syndrome, Olga Reine Neyman
Development Of Myelin In Wolfram Syndrome, Olga Reine Neyman
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Wolfram syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disease traditionally characterized by juvenile onset insulin dependent diabetes, optic atrophy, deafness, and neurodegeneration often beginning in childhood and adolescence. The disease is caused by mutations in WFS1, which encodes for the protein wolframin and is associated with endoplasmic (ER) stress-mediated apoptosis. ER stress-related dysfunction may inhibit production of myelin during neurodevelopment in Wolfram syndrome, as active and developing oligodendrocytes are more vulnerable to ER stress than mature ones. It is known that white matter tracts are compromised in the disease, but many questions related to the vulnerability of myelin and its impact …
Sleep Duration Is Associated With Caudate Volume And Executive Function, Nicole Jones
Sleep Duration Is Associated With Caudate Volume And Executive Function, Nicole Jones
Honors Theses
The ineligible role of the caudate nucleus in sleep has been implicated throughout multiple scientific studies. Previous literature has shown that greater caudate volume is associated with longer habitual sleep duration in older adults- ranging from 55 years of age and up. However, the association between sleep duration and caudate volume remains unknown in the younger population. In this study, we examined the caudate volume in youth to older adults (10 to 85 years old) with a greater sample size (N=464) to increase statistical power. The volumetric size of the caudate nucleus showed significantly positive association with habitual sleep duration, …

Characterization Of Cellular Senescence In Long-Lived Birds And Mammals, Joshua Shirazi
Characterization Of Cellular Senescence In Long-Lived Birds And Mammals, Joshua Shirazi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cellular senescence is characterized by a permanent exit from the cell cycle and the maintenance of a very active secretome termed the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). The accumulation of senescent cells has been associated with several age-related diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis, osteoarthritis, pulmonary fibrosis, and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. For the past two decades, cellular senescence has been intensively studied, but exclusively on laboratory rodents and human cell lines. However, our understandings about cellular senescence in other species are extremely limited. This study aimed to characterize the SASP of long-lived and short-lived species using newly developed cutting-edge proteomic …

An Investigation Into Transcription Fidelity And Its Effects On C. Elegans And S. Cerevisiae Health And Longevity, Olivia S. Dinep-Schneider
Theses and Dissertations
mRNA molecules form an intermediate in the transfer of sequences from DNA to ribosomes in order to guide protein production. Errors can be introduced into mRNA, producing aberrant proteins which place a strain on cellular regulatory machinery, causing increased risks of apoptosis, cancer, and decreased fitness. These errors may be introduced due to decreased transcriptional proofreading capabilities, exposure to chemicals, or mistakes in RNA editing machinery. It is important to investigate these causes of transcription errors to better understand the long-neglected area of mRNA fidelity which has such significant impacts on our cellular functions. In this paper, it was determined …
Anxiety, Depression, And Fear Of Dependency In Middle And Older Adults, Darby D. Mackenstadt
Anxiety, Depression, And Fear Of Dependency In Middle And Older Adults, Darby D. Mackenstadt
Theses and Dissertations
Negative stereotypes of aging, such as dependency, tend to paint a picture of older adults as frail or a burden on society. This study aimed to explore the relationship between the Fear of Dependency Scale and anxiety and depression, evaluating gender, age, and physical health as moderators. Findings suggest that age moderated the relationship between fear of dependency and depression and anxiety in women, with middle-aged women reporting the highest levels of depression and anxiety. Similarly, poor physical health in women with high fear of dependency being related to higher levels of depression and anxiety. Fear of dependency was related …
Parental Differential Treatment And Its Impact On The Sibling Relationship: A Literature Review, Kanisha Pierre-Noel
Parental Differential Treatment And Its Impact On The Sibling Relationship: A Literature Review, Kanisha Pierre-Noel
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Parental differential treatment (PDT) may happen for a number of reasons. Each child is different; therefore, each child has their own individual personality and may differ developmentally or in temperament. These differences can make parenting individual children challenging. These differences can cause some parents to show preference toward one child over another because their behavior may be easier to handle. While the difference in treatment due to varying situations and developmental needs is understandable, children may still be sensitive to the increased parental attention shown to another child and be negatively affected by it. PDT explores the differences in parenting …

The Association Between Sleep And Relationship Quality Among Undergraduate Students, Catherine Smith
Honors Theses
This study sought out to examine the association between sleep and relationship quality in undergraduate student populations. Attending university is a novel experience for emerging adults but is subsequently associated with increased sleep difficulties and increased exposure to various social relationships. Indeed, the literature suggests social relationships can influence sleep in all populations, but few have explored relationship quality in the context of conflict and support in undergraduates. The quality of different social relationships (romantic, family, and friend), the severity of insomnia symptoms, and length of sleep duration were investigated. The current study collected data from a sample of ten …
