Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment: Examining The Perspectives Of Survivors And Speech-Language Pathologists, Patricia Lynn Geels
Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment: Examining The Perspectives Of Survivors And Speech-Language Pathologists, Patricia Lynn Geels
Dissertations
Scientific advancements have led to significant improvements in cancer treatment and increased survival rates. However, cancer survivors often experience long-term effects, including cognitive impairments known as cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). CRCI is a common and distressing side effect that affects affected individuals’ quality of life. The discipline of speech-language pathology (SLP) is well-positioned to assess and treat CRCI. Still, there is a gap in determining the most effective support for cancer survivors with CRCI. This mixed methods, three-paper dissertation implements exploratory, cross-sectional survey design to examine how speech-language pathologists and survivors view CRCI symptoms, its impact on daily functioning, and …

Application Of Teaching Regarding Injury Appearance In Darker Pigmented Skin Patients: A Quality Improvement Project, Tiffany Akiba
DNP Projects
Significance and Background: The skin is the largest organ of our body, and skin injury prevention begins with accurately inspecting skin. Current practices stress on looking for any signs of redness which often signify that the skin is possibly injured or compromised. However, darker skin tones do not appear red when injured. Assessing for redness is a practice that is suited better for lighter skin tones.
Purpose: Provide education to providers on current skin assessment practices of darker skin tones.
Methods: The IHI Model of Improvement was used for this project, and the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle was used to test for …
Does Cognitive Reflection Support Children's Math Learning?, Diana A. Sanchez
Does Cognitive Reflection Support Children's Math Learning?, Diana A. Sanchez
University Honors Program Senior Projects
A basic knowledge of mathematics is required for many social and economic opportunities. Thus, understanding the variables related to children’s math learning is of utmost importance. This study explores the role of cognitive reflection on children’s mathematics learning. Cognitive reflection is the tendency to reflect on and override an inaccurate gut response. Only recently has a measure of cognitive reflection been available for use with school-aged children. Young and Shtulman (2020b) found children’s cognitive reflection was an excellent predictor of children’s mathematical equivalence understanding (i.e., knowing the equal sign means “the same as”). Research has not yet established whether cognitive …

Finding the mechanism behind specific nuclear localization of FOXO4 can produce innovative data to better understand the distinctive subcellular localization patterns in …
Association Of Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health Characteristics And Participant Attrition In A Cohort Study, Mathews Thampi
Association Of Socioeconomic Status And Mental Health Characteristics And Participant Attrition In A Cohort Study, Mathews Thampi
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
The cohort study is an essential design for investigating associations between a variety of risk factors or exposures and a plethora of health outcomes. However, one of their biggest weaknesses is participant attrition, which can introduce bias and impact validity. Understanding whether this attrition is related to exposure and outcome is a critical aspect of assessing the potential for selection bias. The Women and Their Children's Health (WaTCH) study is a prospective cohort study designed initially to examine the health impacts of exposure to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The study has undergone two waves of data collection and is …

Perspectives Of Hispanic/Latina Women Ages 60 And Over On The Impact Of Single Motherhood And Their Long-Term Financial Well-Being, Tess Juno Anselm
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Unmarried women over the age of 60 continue to experience disproportionate rates of adult poverty in the United States, while families headed by single mothers experience the highest poverty rates. This study explores the long-term impact of single motherhood on financial wellness through the perspective of Hispanic/Latina women ages 60 and over who have experienced single motherhood in Massachusetts. A transdisciplinary study, it utilizes intersectionality as a theoretical framework, employs feminist standpoint informed inquiry methods to document lived experiences through in-depth interviews, and engages diffraction as a mode of praxis as it intra-acts with narratives and explores the systems and …
Household Environments And Functional Decline Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults In China, Dandan Zhao
Household Environments And Functional Decline Among Middle-Aged And Older Adults In China, Dandan Zhao
All Theses
This thesis investigates the associations between household social, economic, and physical environment conditions and the trajectory of self-reported functional limitations over time among middle-aged and older adults in China. Despite the increasing interest in the impact of household environments on functional decline, most existing studies are cross-sectional or concern changes in functioning observed in two waves of surveys, and they primarily focus on the influence of one condition. This thesis explores how the trajectory of functional decline is influenced jointly by multiple household factors, including living arrangement, annual living expenditure per capita, indoor air pollution resulting from solid fuels, and …
Evaluating Mitochondrial Dynamics And Bioenergetics In Patient-Derived Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells And Differentiated Derivatives Modeling Leigh Syndrome, Fibi Meshrkey
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondrial disorders are complex diseases that involve multiple systems and result from mutations and deletions in the mitochondrial genome. Leigh syndrome (LS) is a rare and devastating primary mitochondrial disorder characterized by progressive neuromuscular degeneration. Despite its severe consequences, the clinical genotype pathophysiological underlying LS remains elusive, posing significant challenges for the development of effective therapies. The current study aims to advance our understanding of the pathology and phenotype correlation of LS by evaluating mitochondrial dynamics and bioenergetics in patient-derived human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and their differentiated derivatives, which serve as a reliable model of the disease. Key …

APIAS Research Report

Importance: Sarcopenia is an established prognostic factor in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC); the quantification of sarcopenia assessed by imaging is typically achieved through the skeletal muscle index (SMI), which can be derived from cervical skeletal muscle segmentation and cross-sectional area. However, manual muscle segmentation is labor intensive, prone to interobserver variability, and impractical for large-scale clinical use.
Objective: To develop and externally validate a fully automated image-based deep learning platform for cervical vertebral muscle segmentation and SMI calculation and evaluate associations with survival and treatment toxicity outcomes.
Design, setting, and participants: For this prognostic study, …

Perspectives Of Home Care Nurses On Frailty And Resilience In Older Adults Living At Home, Lisa Foley
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The population of older adults is growing rapidly in the United States. As more people are living to an advanced age, they are often managing a multitude of chronic illnesses and disabilities while continuing to live at home. Frailty is a common condition that affects how one ages and the condition is associated with dependency and poor health outcomes. Resilience is considered to be a protective factor against health stressors that lead to frailty in older adults. Perspectives of home care nurses were obtained by semi-structured interviews which described how older adults live at home with frailty and demonstrate resilience. …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology develops many years before the onset of cognitive symptoms. Two pathological processes—aggregation of the amyloid- (A ) peptide into plaques and the microtubule protein tau into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs)—are hallmarks of the disease. However, other pathological brain processes are thought to be key disease mediators of A plaque and NFT pathology. How these additional pathologies evolve over the course of the disease is currently unknown. Here we show that proteomic measurements in autosomal dominant AD cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) linked to brain protein coexpression can be used to characterize the evolution of AD pathology over a timescale …

Given that risk attitudes influence many decisions, it is important to understand the factors that shape such attitudes in late adulthood, when individuals face important risky decisions. While research finds that parenthood tends to correlate with lower risk tolerance in western countries, there is a lacuna on whether such associations persist in late adulthood, and are applicable to the Asian context, where children are conventionally considered a linchpin of old age support. Data for middle aged and older individuals come from the nationwide Singapore Life Panel (N = 6,740). Multivariate statistical analyses are employed to estimate the associations between willingness …

Gerontology In Bryony Lavery’S A Wedding Story (2000) And Sebastian Barry’S Hinterland (2002), Rania M Rafik Khalil
English Language and Literature
Old age is perceived as a narrative of decline, recently, an alternative perspective was introduced known as positive aging or Gerotranscendance. This paper examines ageing in Bryony Lavery’s A Wedding Story (2000) and Sebastian Barry’s Hinterland (2002) through the theory of gerontology. Gerontology in British and Irish modern theatre, according to Giovanna Tallone (2020) and Heather Ingman (2018), is a new category in literary studies and theory. The paper aims to examine the challenges of retaining agency in old age in comparison to the notion of aging as a process of inner harmony further proving that despite the process of …
