Transportation Planning In An Aging Society, Shengxiao (Alex) Li Oct 2023

Transportation Planning In An Aging Society, Shengxiao (Alex) Li

PSU Transportation Seminars

By 2030, all Baby Boomers (those born between 1946 and 1964) will be 65 and older in the U.S. However, the understanding of how Baby Boomers travel differently from the previous generations, and the opportunities and challenges of older people's travel, do not keep pace with the increasing number of older people. This presentation starts with an overview of transportation policies for older people and challenges, followed by several empirical studies investigating older people's generational travel differences, vehicle ownership over the life course, and the interaction of technology usage and travel among older people. It concludes with a policy agenda …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Older people are at high risk of developing and dying from pulmonary infections like tuberculosis (TB), but there are few studies among them, particularly in Hispanics. To address these gaps, we sought to identify host factors associated with TB and adverse treatment outcomes in older Hispanics by conducting a cross-sectional study of TB surveillance data from Tamaulipas, Mexico (2006-2013; n = 8381). Multivariable logistic regressions were assessed for older adults (OA ≥65 years) when compared to young (YA, 18-39 years) and middle-aged adults (40-64 years). We found that the OA had features associated with a less complicated TB (e.g., lower …

Economic Equity And People With Disabilities: Development And Characterization Of A Novel Index, Bhavneet Walia, Katherine Mcdonald, Barry Whaley, Vinh Nguyen Oct 2023

Economic Equity And People With Disabilities: Development And Characterization Of A Novel Index, Bhavneet Walia, Katherine Mcdonald, Barry Whaley, Vinh Nguyen

Burton Blatt Institute

Here, we develop two new social indices: the ADA PARC Absolute Economic Opportunity Index and the ADA PARC Relative Economic Opportunity Index. These indices allow us novel examinations of economic equity between people with and without disabilities within a U.S. state and between people with disabilities in different states using aggregations of multiple component economic indicators. These represent the first efforts to offer U.S. indices of this focus, an important development given the distinct economic needs of people with disabilities and the value in accounting for distinct national policies. The indices rely on U.S. Census and other data on economic …

Physiological, Psychological, And Performance Differences Between Wii Fitness Gaming And Traditional Gym Exercises, Mike R. Bumgarner, David S. Senchina

International Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities

Video gaming systems market themselves as tools for promoting physical activity or physical therapy. In this investigation, we wanted to compare the Wii console system game EA Sports Active to traditional gym exercises using five activities: basketball passing, basketball shooting, biceps curls, body squats, and jogging. Our hypotheses were that: (1) physiological demand would be greater in the gym than on the Wii, (2) psychological measures of exertion would be greater in the gym than on the Wii, and (3) performance would be poorer in the gym than on the Wii. Ten young adults participated in the study, completing all …

Approach Or Avoid Away From Kiosks For The Elderly? A Study On Acceptance And Behavioral Intention Of Self-Service In Hospitals., Chi-Fei Shih, Tseng-Ping Chiu

IASDR Conference Series

The growth of contactless service is driven by numerous factors, including changing consumer needs and preferences, technological advances, and the potential for businesses to increase efficiency and reduce costs. Most importantly, it presents a solution to avoid interaction risk, especially during pandemics or other crises. Several companies have adopted kiosks to provide rapid and safe self-service options, with consumers increasingly welcoming convenience and speed. COVID-19 reshaped the flow of how we deal with service. Nowadays, we rely heavily on technology to meet demand or solve problems. However, more research is needed to understand how older adults interact with kiosks as …

We’Ve Never Learned To Talk About It’: Considerations For Design Researchers To Address Intimacy And Sexuality., Yoni Lefévre, Niels Hendriks, Andrea Wilkinson

IASDR Conference Series

This paper aims to learn from existing design research literature on taboo topics to inform the development of a research project about sexual health in later life. Participatory design approaches can play a role to better understand the complexities of researching taboos and navigate in sensitive situations. A rapid literature review focused on taboos related to people’s individual sexual experiences of the body, resulted in identifying five actionable design considerations: 1) make taboos visible and interactive for people to respond to, 2) use humor to overcome the awkwardness of taboos, 3) design together on taboo subjects for more inclusive futures, …

Exploring Multimodal Technologies To Engage Elderly People In Remote Communication With Their Family, Baihui Chen, Xueliang Li

IASDR Conference Series

The increasing mobility in the ageing society has caused more and more elderly people living separately with their family. The quality of remote communication with their family located in different places affects the mental wellbeing and quality of life for the elderly. However, the traditional communication technologies focus on screen-based interaction and synchronous communication are limited in engaging elderly users in fulfilling and engaging experiences compared to the younger generations in communication. In this paper, we look at three novel types of technologies, i.e., immersive technologies, social robots and IoTs, while considering their potential to promote social presence of one …

Dynamic Personalities For Elderly Care Robots: User-Based Recommendations, Daehun Lee, Kwanmyung Kim, Alisher Saduakas, Ulugbek Vahobjon Ugli Ismatullaev, Joongsoo Kim, Bertha Patricia Barrera Garza

IASDR Conference Series

The increasing population of older people worldwide has led to growth in the silver market. In response to this trend, various elderly care robots have emerged in recent years to provide physical assistance and support to the elderly. However, these robots are limited in their functions as they do not cater to the mental, emotional, and social needs of the elderly. Hence, this paper proposes the development of elderly care robots with personalities that can dynamically communicate with the elderly in uncertain situations throughout their lifetime, thus fulfilling their remaining needs. This research analyzed previous studies on social and elderly …

Developing A Community-Engaged Homemaking Approach To Elicit A Sense Of Belonging In People With Dementia, Alessandro Biamonti, Silvia Maria Gramegna, Lorenzo Fossi

IASDR Conference Series

This paper presents a research-action case which explores how homemaking processes and dynamics, enable people with dementia to create and establish a sense of belonging towards the care environment they are living in, after relocating from their home. In particular, home-making practises encompass the involvement of archetypical elements and material possessions in the form of objects owning an intrinsic emotional value, which are capable of enabling habits, conversations and social interactions. Through the presented case study, we want to investigate their role in contributing to homemaking and placemaking practises. The research encompassed semi-structured interviews, observations, and storytelling focus groups with …

Elderly’S Perceptions Of A Meaningful Interaction With Voice-Based Conversational Agents: Integrate Into Daily Routines, Support Relatedness, But Do Not Hamper Autonomy, Hilal Şahin, Aslı Günay, Gülşen Töre Yargın

IASDR Conference Series

Voice, as one of the most natural means of communication for the elderly given their declining physical and cognitive abilities, has the potential to reduce interaction barriers with newly emerging technologies. In parallel to this, studies focusing on the elderly as a user group have escalated in academia due to events such as the increasing ageing population and global epidemics like COVID-19. However, the focus has been mostly on their declining mental and physical abilities. This paper aims to investigate the hedonic aspects of Voice-based Conversational Agents (VCAs) for the elderly. In this respect, we conducted in-depth interviews with 13 …

Development Of A “Facial Rock-Paper-Scissors” Program For Rehabilitation Of Swallowing And Cognitive Functions That Has Psychological Effects, Kiyomi Yoshioka

IASDR Conference Series

We have developed a “Facial rock-paper-scissors” program that maintains and improves cognitive and swallowing functions by incorporating mouth and cheek movements and voicing, which are part of swallowing training, into a response-type facial rock-paper-scissors game with oral-facial movements. The expression of “scissors,” formed by horizontally stretching the mouth and raising the corners of the mouth, is expected to have the psychological effect of smiling to improve mood. We conducted a psychological evaluation of changes in mood during the “Facial rock-paper-scissors” program using the Profile of Mood States Short-Form (POMS-SF) and Two-Dimensional Mood Scale Short-Term (TDMS-ST) methods, and confirmed the psychological …

Dissecting The Daily Feeding Pattern: Peripheral Clock/Cycle Generate The Feeding/Fasting Episodes And Neuronal Molecular Clocks Synchronize Them, Akiko Maruko, Koichi M Iijima, Kanae Ando

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

A 24-h rhythm of feeding behavior, or synchronized feeding/fasting episodes during the day, is crucial for survival. Internal clocks and light input regulate rhythmic behaviors, but how they generate feeding rhythms is not fully understood. Here we aimed to dissect the molecular pathways that generate daily feeding patterns. By measuring the semidiurnal amount of food ingested by single flies, we demonstrate that the generation of feeding rhythms under light:dark conditions requires quasimodo (qsm) but not molecular clocks. Under constant darkness, rhythmic feeding patterns consist of two components: CLOCK (CLK) in digestive/metabolic tissues generating feeding/fasting episodes, and the …

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The present study tested whether energy-minimizing behaviors evoke reward-related brain activity that promotes the repetition of these behaviors via reinforcement learning processes. Fifty-eight healthy young adults in a standing position performed a task where they could earn a reward either by sitting down or squatting while undergoing electroencephalographic (EEG) recording. Reward-prediction errors were quantified as the amplitude of the EEG-derived reward positivity. Results showed that reward positivity was larger on reward versus no reward trials, confirming the validity of our paradigm to measure evoked reward-related brain activity. However, results showed no evidence that sitting (versus standing and squatting) trials led …

Environmental Loss, Displacement, And Anxiety In Portugal: Analyzing News Articles To Differentiate Manifestations Of Environmental Distress, Robin Greene

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Expressions of environmental distress can take different forms, with different symptoms, causes, and treatments. Existing literature generally identifies three primary categories of environmental distress responses: environmental grief, solastalgia, and eco-anxiety. This paper explores these distinctions and identifies words typically associated with each category in Portuguese news articles using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). LDA is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) technique that groups words into topics and identifies connections between those words based on how often those words appear together in sequences. This paper uses a modified LDA algorithm called GuidedLDA to identify additional keywords within topics defined by a list …
