The Impact Of Religion And Religious Organizations, Elizabeth A. Clark
The Impact Of Religion And Religious Organizations, Elizabeth A. Clark
BYU Law Review
Legal scholars often see religion as a mere private preference, choice, value, or identity with no more meaning or positive social impact than any other preference, choice, value, or identity. If anything, religion’s negative impacts are often highlighted. For example, a focus on the harms of religion often underlies contemporary legal debates about religious exemptions and tensions between religious rights and LGBTQ rights or reproductive rights. Conversely, scholars in other fields have documented religion’s distinctive pro-social features, proposing mechanisms by which religion has unique positive impacts on individuals, families, and society. While recognizing that, for its practitioners, religion has its …

Transitional Care Of Older Adults From Hospital To Home, Mallika Chuansangeam
Transitional Care Of Older Adults From Hospital To Home, Mallika Chuansangeam
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Older adults often have reduced body reserve, multiple illnesses of many organ systems, and receive polypharmacy thus requiring complex medical care. Older adults have the opportunity to be cared for in different settings leading to changes in all dimensions of care. This creates a chance for medical mistakes and affects the safety of older adults that come with each transition of care. Transitional care is especially important in older adults. Fast and important information transfer between care teams who provide information to patients and caregivers in a language that is easy to understand is vital. Involving patients in the decision-making …

Early Discharge Planning To Improve Throughput, Alan Chhith
Student Scholarly Projects
Early discharge planning can improve the safety and outcomes of hospitalized patients. The aim of the multidisciplinary team early discharge rounds was to manage patient flow by removing discharge barriers to reduce the length of stay in the medical/surgical unit. The overall goal of the process improvement project was to make inpatient beds available to admit patients from the emergency department, reducing long ED boarding, and decrease the hours of diversion. The PICOT question for this project was: in the Veteran population (P) in the VA medical/surgical unit, early discharge planning with an interdisciplinary team (I) compared to regular discharge …

Assessing Medication Self-Management Challenges And Self-Efficacy During Emergency Department Medication Reconciliation: An Evidence-Based Quality Improvement Project, Mitchel Erickson, Jyu-Lin Chen, Yoonmee Joo, Stephanie Rogers, Thomas Hoffman, Claire Bainbridge
Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Abstract
Background
Older adult patients (≥65) accessing emergency departments (ED) represent a significant demographic. Recidivism secondary to adverse drug events (ADE) ranges between 6-24% and levels of prescribed medication non-adherence is common among older adults. The ED pharmacist medication reconciliation workflow may mitigate self-management challenges in real time and reduce medication-related harm while potentially impacting recidivism, medication adherence, and patient self-efficacy. The purposes of this evidence-based project were to (1) evaluate the impact of a modified Medication Management for Deficiencies in the Elderly (MedMalDE) intervention on Self-Efficacy for Appropriate Medication Use (SEAMS) and 30-day return to care and (2) identify …

Ageism By A Community Sample Of Young Adults: Expanding The Contact Hypothesis To Explore Ageism, Helena Lucia Swanson
Ageism By A Community Sample Of Young Adults: Expanding The Contact Hypothesis To Explore Ageism, Helena Lucia Swanson
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Aging demographics globally are changing rapidly, resulting in the category of “older adults” (65 years and older) growing to eventually become the largest age demographic (United Nations, 2022). As our world gets older, ageism is a growing concern given its health, societal, cultural, and political consequences (Chrisler et al., 2016; Bugental & Hehman, 2007; Levy et al., 2020). Following Allport’s Contact Hypothesis (1954), this dissertation empirically analyzed predictors of ageism, including contact with older adults, for younger adults (18-26 years old) residing in U.S. communities. Participants were recruited using Prolific Academic, an online crowdsourcing platform and responded to five scales …
Association Between Microbiome And The Development Of Adverse Posttraumatic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae After Traumatic Stress Exposure, Abigail L Zeamer, Stacey L House, Et Al.
Association Between Microbiome And The Development Of Adverse Posttraumatic Neuropsychiatric Sequelae After Traumatic Stress Exposure, Abigail L Zeamer, Stacey L House, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Patients exposed to trauma often experience high rates of adverse post-traumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS). The biological mechanisms promoting APNS are currently unknown, but the microbiota-gut-brain axis offers an avenue to understanding mechanisms as well as possibilities for intervention. Microbiome composition after trauma exposure has been poorly examined regarding neuropsychiatric outcomes. We aimed to determine whether the gut microbiomes of trauma-exposed emergency department patients who develop APNS have dysfunctional gut microbiome profiles and discover potential associated mechanisms. We performed metagenomic analysis on stool samples (n = 51) from a subset of adults enrolled in the Advancing Understanding of RecOvery afteR traumA …

Optimizing Sitter Use: Enhancing Safety And Cutting Costs, Lauren Gentry, Susan Perusich, Kristie Geil, Rachelle Lancaster
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background: Innovative nursing practices can reduce hospital sitter usage and costs as a component of a patient-focused safety plan. Sitter use, an evidence-based nursing-driven strategy, effectively decreases falls and injury. This project aimed to improve sitter utilization, documentation, and cost-efficiency by minimizing unneeded use, enhancing policy compliance, and preventing safety incidents. Initially, inpatient managers lacked awareness of direct costs, sitter charges weren't recorded in Epic, and safety concerns for patients and staff existed.
Method: In response to observed inconsistencies in sitter practices and gaps in nursing knowledge, a multidisciplinary workgroup was formed. This group introduced standardized documentation forms, engaged in …

Targeting Loneliness In Older Adults With Weekly Socialization, Tanja Johnson
Dissertations
Problem: Loneliness related to social isolation among the older adult population has become an increasing health concern with few interventions available for the general population. Loneliness has been directly associated with depression, poorer physical health outcomes, and overall quality of life.
Methods: The purpose of this study is to evaluate loneliness in the older adult population residing in a senior living community in an urban area in Missouri. Weekly one-on-one socialization, ranging from 45-60 minutes, will be implemented over 6 weeks, with pre and post-intervention screening for loneliness with the 28-item Visit-A-Bit (VAB) screening tool. Effects Of Aging On Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption: A Preliminary Study, Steven Klepacz
Effects Of Aging On Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption: A Preliminary Study, Steven Klepacz
Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs
Aging and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) is something that has not been adequately studied. Studies looking at EPOC mostly are compiled of young college age individuals. Aging in humans is a topic of much research with still more to be learned. The study in this paper attempts to answer the question of whether age affects EPOC when performing a certain exercise. Preliminary findings based on general age-related research suggest the possibility. This thesis will explore the current research related to age and EPOC, analyze the findings, and discuss additional avenues for future research.
Enforcing Equity, Daiquiri J. Steele
Enforcing Equity, Daiquiri J. Steele
Northwestern University Law Review
Federal administrative agencies that enforce workplace laws have dual responsibilities: (1) to prevent or remedy noncompliance with the underlying workplace law and (2) to prevent or remedy noncompliance with the law’s antiretaliation provisions. Disparities based on race, sex, and their intersection exist with respect to both of these types of employer noncompliance, as female workers and workers of color experience more violations of the substantive provisions and the retaliation provisions of these laws. While effective enforcement is vital to preserving workplace regulation as a whole, there is also an equity component to enforcement. Because workplace law violations disproportionately harm women …
Men’S Sheds: An Outlet For Engaging In Creative Activities, Melinda Heinz
Men’S Sheds: An Outlet For Engaging In Creative Activities, Melinda Heinz
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
This research highlights the purpose behind creating an art exhibition featuring work made by Men’s Shed members, many of whom are older adults. Publicly displaying their creative works demonstrates the creative capacities of these older men and counteracts the negative narrative that older adulthood is a time when individuals experience declining abilities. The exhibition also inspires older adults to consider what they can create, experiment with learning new mediums, and provides them an opportunity to connect with others who may share similar interests.
The Ritual Of Therapeutic Artmaking In Long-Term Care, Melinda Heinz Dr., Elissa Wenthe, Alexis Schramel
The Ritual Of Therapeutic Artmaking In Long-Term Care, Melinda Heinz Dr., Elissa Wenthe, Alexis Schramel
International Journal of Lifelong Learning in Art Education
The transition to long-term care settings can be difficult for residents and feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety are not uncommon in these environments. However, participating in therapeutic artmaking rituals creates opportunities for residents to process their feelings, experience states of flow and mindfulness, engage with others, and focus on their own psychological growth. In long-term care, the physical needs of residents are often prioritized, but psychosocial needs also require attention. For this project, therapeutic artmaking rituals were created at a long-term care facility in three levels of care over 12 months. Older adults engaged with clay, paint, raw fiber, …

Implementing Health Information Stations at the Addiction Recovery Center
Six Seattle Pacific University nursing students partnered with an addiction recovery center to address aging healthcare concerns. The recovery center is a non-profit organization that provides a refuge for healing for community members recovering from trauma, homelessness, addiction, and other mental health challenges. Through our weekly meetings with the community, we wanted to address specific barriers such as aging healthcare concerns. We focused on how the low-income aging population posed barriers to aging well.
Background
There has also been a rise in poverty in aging populations (Saldanha, 2023). Though aging influences …
