Internet Generations In The Labor Market, Grażyna Wieczorkowska, Kinga Wilczyńska Dec 2023

Internet Generations In The Labor Market, Grażyna Wieczorkowska, Kinga Wilczyńska

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

Objectives: When describing generational differences, the concept of a collective (prototypical) unit is used, which has been shaped by prevalent social and cultural conditions during the formative period of secondary socialization. Generations whose privileged period coincided with the widespread use of the internet have been referred to as internet generations. The article aims to draw attention to the need to separate the effects of biological age (younger doroworkers differ from older ones in terms of factors such as muscle strength and fresh memory) from the effects of generation resulting from environmental differences during the privileged period of secondary socialization. Methodology: …

Describing And Predicting Trajectories Of Healthcare Utilization Among Older Adults Presenting To An Emergency Department Using The Interrai Emergency Department Screener, Matthew B. Downer, Kristina Kokorelias, Andrew P. Costa, Don Melady, Samir K. Sinha Dec 2023

Describing And Predicting Trajectories Of Healthcare Utilization Among Older Adults Presenting To An Emergency Department Using The Interrai Emergency Department Screener, Matthew B. Downer, Kristina Kokorelias, Andrew P. Costa, Don Melady, Samir K. Sinha

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine

Introduction: Although older adults visit emergency departments (EDs) more than any other age group, the trajectories of healthcare utilization older adults experience post-ED are not well described. Further, whether rapid ED assessment tools can predict trajectories and discharge destinations remains unclear.

Methods: Older adults (≥65 years) who presented to an ED at a large Canadian urban academic hospital were recruited (January 2018-April 2019). The interRAI ED Screener (EDS) was completed on presentation. Patients were categorized by EDS risk score (1/2=low, 3/4=moderate, 5/6=high) and had their discharge destinations tracked. Patients admitted to hospital were tracked until their final discharge destination. …

Engaging Older Immigrants To Learn English: Advocating For Late-In-Life Learning For Everyone, Susan Marie Filous Dec 2023

Engaging Older Immigrants To Learn English: Advocating For Late-In-Life Learning For Everyone, Susan Marie Filous

Master's Projects and Capstones

In the United States, late-in-life and aging-in-place immigrants require basic English language skills to support their ability to independently access economic, medical, housing, legal, and social services. Older immigrants typically rely on family members, potentiating the risks of neglect and dependency. There is an opportunity to expand their agency in society by increasing their English proficiency.

Foreign language geragogy supports differentiated educational strategies for older learners. There is no upper age limit on the ability to learn a new language, and there are new methods and practices to teach foreign languages to older students. It is insufficient to mainstream older …

Policy Review And Recommendation For Secondary Education Np-Led Clinics In The Southeastern United States, Shiney Alex Jacob

Student Scholarly Projects

Secondary-level education involves adolescent children aged 11-12 years to 18-19 with unique healthcare needs. Their healthcare is of significant importance as they are transitioning to adulthood, and a majority of them lack access to primary healthcare needs. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses/Nurse Practitioners (APRNs/NPs) provide high-quality, cost-effective, and evidence-based care to people across the lifespan, and there is minimal utilization of their services in meeting the primary care needs of adolescents at the secondary school level. The purpose of the policy project was to determine if current policies and practices related to school health services in three southeastern states of the …

Dementia Diagnosis And Personality Change, Molly Pavek Dec 2023

Dementia Diagnosis And Personality Change, Molly Pavek

Counselor Education Capstones

The diagnosis of dementia is typically overlooked when thinking about mental health. It has been around for over a century, yet there have been minimal breakthroughs in research. This diagnosis is quite complicated, given the unexpected and sometimes abrupt nature of symptoms. There is still no cure and there are no medications that stop, slow down, or reverse the diagnosis. Several cognitive and behavioral symptoms accompany a dementia diagnosis; a change in personality being one of the most apparent. Researching personality changes over time, allows researchers discover patterns among the diagnosed and medical professionals, the diagnosed, and caregivers of the …

The Evaluation Of Oxidative Stress And Inflammation Markers In Serum And Saliva Of The Patients With Temporomandibular Disorders, Di̇lara Kazan, Burcu Baş, Abdurrahman Aksoy, Enes Atmaca

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), as in the occurrence of many diseases, have been associated with oxidative stress (OS) resulting from the disruption of antioxidant mechanisms and the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in tissues. This study was designed to compare salivary and serum OS and inflammation markers of individuals with TMD and healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted. Twenty-seven TMD patients diagnosed with disc displacement (DD) according to Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) and 17 healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. Prior to any treatment, serum, and saliva samples were taken from …

Investigating Telomere Lengths In Chestnut-Crowned Babblers, Gabriella Rose Beberg Dec 2023

Investigating Telomere Lengths In Chestnut-Crowned Babblers, Gabriella Rose Beberg

Honors Thesis

Telomeres are chromosomal elements that protect and maintain genes as DNA replicates in many organisms. As individuals age and DNA replicates, telomeres often shorten; thus, telomere length often corresponds with an individual’s lifespan, and early-life decreases in telomere length can be predictive of longevity. Here, I investigated the relationship between telomere length and developmental environment in a cooperatively breeding species, the chestnut-crowned babbler (Pomatostomus ruficeps; CCB). Cooperative species are unique, as some individuals give up their own breeding opportunities to help rear the offspring of others; further, cooperative breeding systems generate considerably more variation in adult carers, which …

Evaluation Of A Community Based Teaching Hospital’S Geriatric Emergency Medicine Initiative, Josette Hartnett, Isabel Muronzi-Belfon, Suzanne J. Rose

Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine

INTRODUCTION: To accommodate the complex healthcare needs of the rising geriatric population, Stamford Hospital’s (SH) emergency department (ED) began a Geriatric Emergency Medicine Initiative (GEMI) in 2018 to improve our ED environment, practices, and focused assessments for our community-dwelling older adults.

METHODS: This retrospective program evaluation describes SH’s novel ED processes for at-risk older adults and compares GEMI and non-GEMI assessed patient outcomes using aggregate frequencies on throughput metrics such as length of stay (LOS), 72 hour and 30-day re-admission rates, and other outcomes of interest. Chi-square tests and group t-tests were used for all analyses with a p-value of …

Objective: This study aims to measure the prevalence of mental health disorders in low-resource settings through telepsychiatry and evaluate data from Pakistan's Sehat Kahani nurse-assisted online clinics serving low-income communities. This will help to understand the magnitude and nature of the demand for contextual therapies to promote mental health. The paper will discuss the challenges faced in these settings, such as limited access to mental health facilities, stigma and opportunities telemedicine brings.
Design: An observational cross-sectional study of telepsychiatry consultations using Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 to screen for depression and anxiety was conducted between October and December …

Sex And Race Differences In Obesity-Related Genetic Susceptibility And Risk Of Cardiometabolic Disease In Older Us Adults, Hairui Yu, Nicole Armstrong, Greg Pavela

APC Fund

Importance The fat mass and obesity–associated gene (FTO) is associated with obesity phenotypes, but the association is inconsistent across populations. Within-population differences may explain some of the variability observed.

Objective To investigate sex differences in the association between FTO single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and obesity traits among self-identified non-Hispanic Black and non-Hispanic White US adults, to examine whether the SNVs were associated with cardiometabolic diseases, and to evaluate whether obesity mediated the association between FTO SNVs and cardiometabolic diseases.

Design, Setting, and Participants This cross-sectional study used data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) …

Invisibility, Confusion, And Adjustment:Exploring The Grief Experience Of Grandmothers Supporting Their Bereaved Grandchildren, Jordan Robertson Dec 2023

Invisibility, Confusion, And Adjustment:Exploring The Grief Experience Of Grandmothers Supporting Their Bereaved Grandchildren, Jordan Robertson

Theses and Dissertations

Bereavement is painful at any time of life. For young children experiencing bereavement, grandmothers are often the first line of defense. Grandmothers are frequently called upon when their family members experience an out-of-order death, and while they are willing to provide care, grandmothers don't always know the best way forward. This qualitative study sought to learn more about the grief experiences of 22 grandmothers who had lost a family member prematurely through semi-structured interviews and Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Findings suggest (a) grandmothers experience layered grief in that they grieve the loss of the family member, experience the pain of the …

Engaging The Church Body Of First Baptist Church Of Baldwyn Through A Ministry Placement Process, Jonathan Haley Uhrig Dec 2023

Engaging The Church Body Of First Baptist Church Of Baldwyn Through A Ministry Placement Process, Jonathan Haley Uhrig

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Churches often struggle with finding enough volunteers to staff their ministries fully. The church staff and a small percentage of its membership usually does most of the ministry. Instead of pleading for more volunteers and putting pressure on those already serving to add additional ministries, churches can equip their current membership to serve in the church as they are gifted. When someone comes to Christ, God gives them at least one spiritual gift. Believers also have ministry passions and talents that can be leveraged for building and growing the church. Churches can help their members discover their spiritual gifts and …

Leadership Style And Nursing Retention, Brenae J. Reason Dec 2023

Leadership Style And Nursing Retention, Brenae J. Reason

MSN Capstone Projects

Nursing is the heart of healthcare, for decades we have been the drivers of innovation and have contributed to so many advancements in the profession. Even with nursing being a sincere passion amongst many nurses, there is an alarming trend of nurses who are faced with burnout (Brusie, C., n.d.). It has been reported that 1 in 5 nurses left their position in one particular health system (Andreyeva et al., 2023). It is also noted that turnover can be costly for organizations (Zuniga et al., 2019). While there are a multitude of reasons nurses could be leaving their companies, one …

Lifestyle And Dietary Modifications For Reducing Psoriatic Disease Activity: A Comprehensive Review, Andrea Nguyen, Jessica Garner Dec 2023

Lifestyle And Dietary Modifications For Reducing Psoriatic Disease Activity: A Comprehensive Review, Andrea Nguyen, Jessica Garner

Pacific Journal of Health

Abstract: Psoriasis is a prevalent, immune-medication disorder affecting millions of individuals in the United States, leading to substantial healthcare costs (Armstrong, 2021; Brenzinski, 2015). Psoriasis has an established correlation with comorbidities such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome (Al-Mutairi, 2010). Due to the substantial socioeconomic burden psoriatic disease poses on modern day society, significant benefit could be derived from identifying nonprescription strategies for patients to adopt in order to reduce disease activity. This comprehensive review includes 33 publications from 2008 to 2023, evaluating non-prescription therapeutic strategies including lifestyle modification and anti-inflammatory dietary changes. The analysis suggests …

Patients exposed to trauma often experience high rates of adverse post-traumatic neuropsychiatric sequelae (APNS). The biological mechanisms promoting APNS are currently unknown, but the microbiota-gut-brain axis offers an avenue to understanding mechanisms as well as possibilities for intervention. Microbiome composition after trauma exposure has been poorly examined regarding neuropsychiatric outcomes. We aimed to determine whether the gut microbiomes of trauma-exposed emergency department patients who develop APNS have dysfunctional gut microbiome profiles and discover potential associated mechanisms. We performed metagenomic analysis on stool samples (n = 51) from a subset of adults enrolled in the Advancing Understanding of RecOvery afteR traumA …

“I Could've Been A Whole Lot Better”: Motivations And Perceived Benefits Of Black Retired Adult Learners With Low Literacy Skills Participating In An Adult Basic Education Program, Kit M. Wilson

ETD Archive

For the past several decades, federal legislation has used accountability measures and funding eligibility to narrow the focus of adult education on workforce development. While many adult learners benefit from these policies, retired adult learners do not. Retired adult learners do not participate in adult education for career-related reasons. Although there are several studies that document the psychological benefits of retired adults participating in education programs, there are limited studies documenting the self-reported motivations and perceived benefits of retired adults who participate in adult basic education (ABE). This study aimed to close the gap in the literature by investigating the …
